LINK-Mag Local News Resort's Businesses sign up to Mark of Confidence

lackpool’s tourism industry has finally reopened – with around 150 businesses already signed up to a new COVID-Safe industry standard. Many of the resort’s key attractions – including Blackpool Pleasure Beach, The Blackpool Tower, Blackpool Zoo, Blackpool Piers, Coral Island and Madame Tussauds – put out the welcome mat at the weekend along with hotels, restaurants, bars and amusement centres. For most, it was the first time they had been able to open the doors to visitors since the pandemic lockdown on March 23.

Measures include:

In the last few days before opening, scores of Blackpool’s tourism businesses signed up to VisitEngland’s new “We’re Good To Go” consumer mark to reassure residents and visitors that they are adhering to Government and Public Health guidance. By the July 4 reopening day, more than 100 hotels and B&Bs had secured the standard, along with key attractions, venues, restaurants, bars and shopping centres. It means they can now display the distinctive tick logo. Cllr Gillian Campbell, Cabinet Member for Tourism & Culture for Blackpool Council, said: “After months of telling people to stay away, it is a relief to finally be able to invite visitors back to enjoy all that Blackpool has to offer. “We are very much aware that after months of lockdown, some people might be a little nervous about venturing out to do some of the leisure activities that used to be second nature. “That is why, as a resort, we have aligned ourselves to a national industry standard and are working with our businesses to make sure as many as possible are displaying the “We’re Good To Go” mark as a show of confidence that they are doing everything required to protect the public.” To obtain the standard, businesses must show that they have carried out a COVID risk assessment and are adhering to all of the latest Government guidelines and making necessary changes around social distancing, staff training and health and safety.

Timed tickets introduced for some indoor attractions to reduce the number of visitors in locations at the same time. Introduction of one-way systems, clear floor markings and queue management systems to maintain social distancing measures at all attractions and help to limit contact between both staff and visitors. Encouragement of cashless payments throughout to avoid cross contamination. To help visitors enjoy their resort experience, Blackpool Council has introduced a cashless parking app to avoid queuing at pay machines and opened a brand new toilet block at the southern end of the promenade. VisitBlackpool has also launched an on-line “Know Before You Go” platform giving comprehensive information on the measures introduced across the resort’s tourism industry to protect the public so that visitors can plan ahead of their visit. This can be viewed at visitblackpool.com Over the coming weeks, more hotels, B&Bs and other businesses will reopen as Blackpool’s tourism season starts to gather momentum. And don’t forget that Blackpool has a wealth of open spaces to be enjoyed including six miles of golden sands where visitors can kick off their shoes, paddle in the sea and enjoy extensive strolls along the promenade. We also have green spaces aplenty to enjoy especially at Stanley Park, voted the UK’s favourite park in 2019. All we ask of our visitors is to stick to social distancing guidance outdoors and dispose of litter responsibly. WELCOME BACK!

Blackpool Illuminations to celebrate UK’S Corona Heroes NEW

s the nation prepares to salute the NHS on its 72nd birthday this weekend, Blackpool has announced that its annual Blackpool Illuminations display will incorporate a special tribute to the UK’s care heroes. The autumn display, which will be presented under a theme of Bring On The Light, will celebrate the extraordinary efforts of the NHS and other key workers during the coronavirus pandemic. As part of the tribute section, VisitBlackpool is inviting nominations for key workers to be included in a Corona Heroes display within the six-mile stretch of the Illuminations. Around 50 of the successful applicants will have illuminated images of themselves displayed within a newly-created section just a stone’s throw from The Blackpool Tower. Last month, it was announced that Blackpool Illuminations will be extended by two months,

starting on September 4 and ending on Sunday 3 January, 2021. It will be the first time Blackpool Illuminations have shone over Christmas and New Year. Cllr Gillian Campbell, Cabinet Member for Tourism & Culture, said: “This year’s Blackpool Illuminations give us the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to the remarkable efforts of those who have worked so tirelessly and selflessly during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Our theme of Bring On The Light for this year’s display is intended to celebrate the nation’s reemergence from a period of darkness which has seen the worst public health crisis in a generation. “The Corona Heroes section will allow us to put just some of our NHS and key workers up in lights.” Cllr Campbell said a further tribute within the Illuminations would be revealed early next month.

ne of Blackpool’s most enduring attractions has joined the growing list of tourism businesses signed up the new We’re Good To Go COVID-safe industry standard. Around 300 businesses across the resort have signed up to the VisitEngland standard within a week of its launch including hotels, B&Bs, visitor attractions, restaurants, bars and amusement centres. And now they have been joined by a traditional attraction that has graced the beaches for decades – the famous Blackpool donkeys. After going through the usual inspection regime and the new COVID-safe guidelines, the donkey operators have been given the green light to return to the sands. Karen Richardson, who is fourth generation donkey operator and whose family have had donkeys on Blackpool beach for over 100 years, was one of the first operators in resort to be awarded the We’re Good to Go accreditation, meaning that her donkey rides will be following all necessary health and safety advice to keep her customers safe. BLACKPOOL CANCELS 2020 RIDE THE LIGHTS

The event, which gives cyclists of all ages and ability an opportunity to ride on a traffic-free promenade a few days ahead of the official Switch-On of the Blackpool Illuminations, attracts up to 15,000 people. It was due to take place on Tuesday 1 September. Although the Blackpool Illuminations will go ahead as planned, with a two-month extension into the New Year, the event organisers, VisitBlackpool, say that the format of Ride the Lights means it cannot take place

under current restrictions. Cllr Gillian Campbell, Cabinet Member for Tourism & Culture on Blackpool Council, said: “Ride The Lights has been one of the highlights of our events calendar for more than a decade and it is obviously disappointing that it cannot be staged this year.

Blackpool Illuminations will be disappointed, but I hope they will understand why we have made this decision.

“We look forward to the event returning in 2021.”
