Four Finalists vye for £100,000 Award

our internationally-renowned designers are vying for the unique opportunity to create a spectacular light installation in the worldfamous Blackpool Illuminations. Photo: Sue Burton announced Photography earlier this year, The competition, has attracted interest from across the globe. Now four teams and individuals have been shortlisted for the final judging when one of them will win a £100k award to take their project from concept to manufacture.

The finalists, whose work will be judged by a panel chaired by Blackpool Illuminations Creative Curator Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen on November 20, are: Guildhall Live Events. Based in London, this prestigious performing arts institution has had its artistic work featured throughout the UK including the British Museum, Glastonbury and the Tower of London. Jack Irving. One of Blackpool’s most creative sons, the London-based set and costume designer is widely known for his dazzling work, including the design of costumes for Lady Gaga. Lancaster University. The team from one of the UK’s most respected universities has set its sights on creating a concept aimed at turning the Promenade into a playground of light. Lisa Ashcroft. The Lancashire-born artist, now based in Australia, is widely respected for her talent and has work featured in private collections in the 10

UK, Cyprus, America, Japan and Spain. The four were selected from dozens of entries and expressions of interest from artists, designers and creative professionals. Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen said: “The quality of the entries for this inaugural competition has been outstanding. We have four teams and individuals with very different concepts, but all of them with the potential to create something very special within the 2020 Blackpool Illuminations. “Once the final judging has taken place, we will be inviting our winner to work with the Blackpool Illuminations team to turn their idea into reality. It promises to be a really exciting journey.” Cllr Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council and a member of the judging panel, added: “The design competition is intended to help reinvent the Illuminations by creating spectacular installations along the Promenade, giving visitors a very different experience to the traditional drive-through. “Events such as the annual Lightpool Festival are already providing compelling reasons for people to get out of their cars and enjoy the Illuminations on foot. The winner of this competition will add yet another dimension.” For further information, please go to www. visitblackpool.com/illuminations.

aving graduated from Salford University in 1986, Ian moved to Blackpool to start his career in the NHS. He worked at most of the local NHS clinics across the Fylde and at Victoria, South Shore and Devonshire Road Hospitals. During this time Ian developed his special interest in biomechanics and gait analysis. After 10 years Ian ventured into private practice doing home visits in evenings after his NHS work. In 1999 he was offered the opportunity to start a private podiatry clinic in rooms at Queensway Medical Centre. As Ian’s client base increased, he reduced his NHS hours, eventually leaving the NHS completely in 2004 to go into full-time private practice.

Members of Trinity Hospice & Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust celebrate their win at the Nursing Times Award.

Trinity Hospice nurses congratulate the participants of their £50 Challenge. Well done!

£50 challenge raises over 50k Record number of businesses raise over £50,000 for Trinity Hospice and Brian House Children’s Hospice

A

record number of businesses in Lancashire have raised £53,376.77 for Trinity Hospice and Brian House Children’s Hospice, as part of the charity’s £50 Challenge. 37 teams from a number of different businesses and organisations were given a starter fund of £50, with the aim to grow this amount and turn it into as much money as possible, all within a four month period. Teams varied from local businesses, community teams, and individuals from across Blackpool, Fylde & Wyre. This year, the charity saw more sign ups than ever before, and raised a magnificent £53,376.77 from just a £50 starter fund for Trinity Hospice & Brian House Children’s Hospice. The challenge promotes healthy competition between organisations and a winner is awarded a certificate to recognise their achievements. This year, DWP Ryscar

16

House & Warbreck House raised a considerable £8,276.38 through a variety of fundraising events since May this year. Over the past six years, the £50 Challenge has raised over £200,000.00 – and won’t be stopping any time soon. Corporate Partnership Manager, Janet Atkins, said: “Thank you to everyone that took part in this year’s £50 Challenge. It was brilliant to see so many organisations get involved. “We’re already looking forward to 2020 – this time, we’re hoping to break even more records, with 50 teams taking part. If your company or your friends would like to be a part of the £50 Challenge, starting 1st May 2020, then get in touch with our fundraising team on 01253 959363 for more information.

Local healthcare practitioners team up to win prestigious nursing award Trinity Hospice & Palliative Care Services, based in Bispham, have teamed up with Clifton Hospital, part of the Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, to develop a remote working programme for nurses and health care practitioners, enabling them to reach more patients – which has gone on to win them an award from the Nursing Times. The collaboration focused on ‘Remote End of Life Care’, utilising technology effectively in order to serve patients in their own homes by speaking to them via tablets. Pilot campaigns initially ran at various nursing homes and Clifton Hospital itself, focused over a 13 month period. Those involved in the initiative included Sarah Roberts, Trinity Hospice, Helena Palin, Clifton Hospital, and then members of the Digital Health Team at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals, Veronica Southern, Bryan Trench, and Katie Selby. This collaboration resulted in a joint award from the Nursing Times for ‘Technology and Data in Nursing’ and was presented at their annual ceremony, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London.

Clinical Nurse Specialist Manager at Trinity Hospice, Sarah Roberts, said: “We saved a total of £21,000 by linking in with these areas virtually by video, instead of travelling. “Patients who have been part of the process have not had any negative comments and have enjoyed the experience. Our main priority is to ensure patients have the best quality of life. Most don’t want to wait in all day for a nurse to call, so we’re providing patients with that choice on how they want to be contacted.” Over 800 hours of clinical time has also been released within the community teams, meaning more patients can now be contacted. Trinity Hospice has continued with the initiative, with ongoing ‘Virtual Clinics’ within the community. Sarah went on to say: “We need to ensure that our patients are given a choice, not only about the service they receive, but also the way they receive it. “For us, it means we can see more patients in a day because we are not spending time on the road. For 14 months since launching a pioneering trial of our virtual clinics, we’ve been able to work remotely – and work smarter for our patients.”

lackpool is to benefit from discounted parking in the run-up to Christmas to encourage people to shop local.

The campaign will start on Saturday 30 November when the majority of council-owned car parks across Blackpool* will be free to use to celebrate both National Small Business Saturday and the Christmas Lights Switch-On event in St John’s Square. Then, throughout December, residents and out-oftown visitors will be able to park for just £1 for any three-hour period on Central, East Topping Street and West Street car parks in the town centre. The £1 parking offer, which is being funded by Blackpool Council and the Town Centre BID, will run from December 1 to January 1 inclusive. Cllr Mark Smith, Blackpool Council’s Cabinet Member for Business, Enterprise & Job Creation, said: “We are pleased to be able to repeat last year’s highly-popular £1 parking offer throughout the month of December on three of our main town centre car parks. “We are also delighted to add another bonus by way of free use of the majority of our car parks on Small Business Saturday on November 30. This will give people throughout the town an opportunity to support their local shops and businesses, as well as giving people an extra incentive to watch the Christmas lights switch on in the town centre.

provide an attractive deal for visitors coming from out-of-town.” The Christmas lights switch-on event, which has been organised by the Town Centre BID, will take place on the afternoon of Saturday 30 November with a special guest appearance by TV personality, Scarlett Moffatt. Ryan Skyrme, BID Operations Manager, added: “Blackpool town centre has a great deal to offer to shoppers with a vastly-improved range of cafes and restaurants, as well as a mix of independent and national brands. “We hope the discounted parking offer will be a great incentive for people to not just shop in Blackpool this Christmas, but also enjoy some of the fantastic entertainment that is on offer at our theatres and venues.” This year sees a number of top-quality Christmas productions in and around the town centre including the Peter Pan pantomime at the Grand Theatre; Horrible Christmas at the Opera House; and Pinocchio at The Blackpool Tower Circus. In addition, there is a wide range of Christmas shows and party nights at leading venues such as Viva. Have yourself a messy little Christmas

I

t's not going to be a silent night on Saturday 21st December as 16 local acts take to the stage at Bootleg Social for A Very Messy Christmas 12 to help raise funds for the Blackpool Food Bank. For the 12th year (not in a row) 'A Very Messy Christmas' returns with around 16 local acts taking to the stage to completely ruin Christmas for everyone, ensuring your festive season is crushed more than that time the pony shaped present under the tree turned out to be a fold out clothes drying maiden. Each act on the night gets a three song set list, at least one song has to be a cover of a classic Christmas tune, this gives the audience a chance to, not only sample some of the best new original music in the area, but get the chance to sing-a-long to some festive anthems. All profits on the night will once again be donated be to the Blackpool Food Bank, who help local people who are living below the poverty line. They work together with front-line agencies across Blackpool to provide emergency food parcels for people in need. There will be charity buckets going around on the night so bring some change and please DIG DEEP. You can find out more about the Blackpool Food Bank at www.blackpoolfoodbank.co.uk There will be performances on the night from: Those F******* Snowflakes, Oceans Over Alderaan, Shady Poets, Eye the Bomb, Death Trails, Octopus Montage, The Fashion Police, Stirat Purnweirdin, Uncle Paul,

Those ******* Snowflakes

Full fibre broadband comes to Blackpool

B

lackpool will be one of the first UK towns and cities to get full fibre gigabit broadband1 as a result of a multi-million pound investment that will deliver the fastest, most resilient broadband internet connection on the market. A co-operative group from the private and public sectors are working together to roll out FIBRE BLACKPOOL a local full fibre network that will give an improved broadband internet connection to residents and businesses on the Fylde Coast. The launch of the Fibre Blackpool initiative is a result of £3.1m of funding that was secured in Spring 2018 through the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). The grant has been used to expand a shared fibre infrastructure into Blackpool town centre and along the length of the coast’s tramline, from Squires Gate Lane and Blackpool Airport Enterprise Zone all the way to Fleetwood and Hillhouse Technology Enterprise Zone, thus future-proofing the town with a full ‘fibre to the premises’ (FTTP) connection. Shaun Fensom, secretary of the Cooperative Network Infrastructure (CNI) said, “Over the next two years we’ll be working with Blackpool to unlock a state-of-the-art fibre network for the benefit of both residents and businesses. The network will enable Internet service providers - members of our cooperative - to deliver some of the fastest internet connections available in the UK. They’ll be investing to connect businesses and residents along the Fylde Coast 28

and in the two Enterprise Zones. That will mean faster, better connections, and bring yet more investment to Blackpool." Network operator and CNI founding member, ITS has been quick to make use of this network to benefit local businesses who can now register their interest for gigabit capable broadband and connectivity services. Its network is already live in Blackpool’s town centre and its planned rollout will be completed during 2020. Daren Baythorpe, CEO of ITS said: “Our network utilises CNI’s infrastructure, but we are also investing in, and laying additional full fibre cable so that even more premises can be connected to this fantastic network to benefit from gigabit services. We are already getting a lot of enquiries and we encourage businesses to register their interest as we will build to where there is demand. As a network operator, we work with our partners so that businesses can get the right services and best deals for their needs. We are providing an offer that caters for businesses and organisations of all sizes, shapes and connectivity budgets and we are delighted to be working with the local authorities to fulfil their full fibre vision for the area.” Connecting with Fibre Blackpool means: Fast reliable performance, no more buffering watching juddery videos or waiting for hours for films and music to upload

Hyperfast speeds to power your bandwidth hungry applications – it will handle anything you throw at it from Netflix, Office 365, gaming online, voice over telephony and payroll services Competitively priced services to fulfil your individual requirements and premium services also available where a dedicated line is required How do local residents and businesses benefit from the investment? Gigabit vouchers, which are a one-off contribution to SMEs and residents, can be used by small businesses and the local communities surrounding them to contribute to the installation cost of a gigabit-capable connection. Businesses can claim up to £2,500 against the cost of connection either individually or as part of a group project. Residents can benefit from the scheme with a voucher worth £500 as part of a group project. Residents and businesses can access the voucher scheme by registering their interest with one of the suppliers involved in the FIBRE BLACKPOOL scheme and who are working to deliver full fibre in the local area. The scheme is supplier-led which means suppliers will be requesting the voucher on behalf of their customers.
