Too little too late

B

rian House Children’s Hospice has hosted its first ever international research conference, welcoming speakers from across the globe. The conference, called ‘Too Little Too Late’, explored research projects in children’s palliative care, and left delegates with ideas to develop their practice and projects to start working on. Many of the people attending the event, which was held at the Bispham-based hospice in September, were from NorthWest universities and children’s hospices. The speakers included Dr Andrea Postier, a scientific investigator for the Children’s Minnesota Research Institute in the USA, Dr Naveen Salins, a paediatric palliative care consultant in India and Estera Ciobanu, a PhD student and paediatric palliative care social worker in Romania. The conference’s keynote speaker was Professor Jayne Price, an associate professor in children’s nursing at Kingston and St George’s Faculty of Health, Social Care and Education, London. She spoke about the challenges of carrying out

research in children’s palliative care. Also speaking at the event was Kelly Yare, whose son Roman attends Brian House for respite care. Brian House’s clinical manager, Carol Wylde, said ‘A really good mix of professionals attended to listen to a variety of speakers focus on different topics within the field of paediatric palliative care.

Our delegates and speakers worked together at the end of the day to discuss the priorities for future research and the future of palliative care. It was a really informative day from which everyone was able to take something back to think about and work on with their professional teams. We’re really grateful to everyone who came, from the delegates, the speakers and the organisations which held information stands. It was a really good day.’

LINK-Mag Entertainment by Ann Montini to date people too, but it’s the greats that people admire and love, so yes there will always be Bassey and Manilow in there, simply because the fans demand it’

Not so average Joe Ann meets singing legend Joe Longthorne MBE

T

he wonderful Joe Longthorne is recognised as this country’s finest vocalist and live performer, held in the highest esteem by his fellow professionals, loved and adored by his fans the world over, The Bispham resident tells all to Ann A busy year as ever Joe? JL - ‘Wonderful thank you, and can I just say a huge thank you to all the fans old and new who keep on supporting me. It really does mean so much to see so many people at the shows.’ 50th Anniversary tour this year too? ‘I know, where has the time gone Ann? Feel like I am just about getting started now, but seriously it’s been a blast, and I have been blessed with the gift of entertaining which has shaped my life so much. We have had a wonderful time on this tour though, seeing so many friends old and new’ You were awarded an M.B.E, what an honour that was ‘I know, I mean me a lad from Hull at the Palace eh? It was such a special day and something you don’t think will happen, so when it does it’s wonderful and yes, I was nervous but it was a day I shall never forget, but again, it’s the people again that made me an MBE so thank you’ Many people would love to see you back on TV so what would appeal to you ? ‘Well I can’t cook, don’t garden as such and I’m not keen on the jungle, so sadly it limits you if your an entertainer like me, this is why I love live shows because we know with the full houses at Viva Blackpool, that people do want a great show, so why does TV ignore that? It’s madness’ Your signature impressions of Dame Shirley Bassey, Tony Bennett, Sir Tom Jones, Barry Manilow, Sammy Davis Jnr (the list is endless) are all are spot on too ‘Thank you, I love doing them, but it’s something the fans love. I do up 12

What advice would you give to others starting out ‘Work hard and grab the opportunities, because you will learn something from them and above all keep working hard, because a little rejection does us all good from time to time, it makes you work harder’ Would you ever like to be a reality TV judge? ‘Yes and no, really. I don’t want to be the one to break dreams, and who am I to say you’re no good, you know. But I would like to encourage people, and say give it a shot and just go for it ‘ You love Blackpool and have broken so many records at all the theatres here, any particular favourite? ‘The North Pier always holds a special place in my heart, but we are blessed to have so many wonderful venues, like the new one with Viva. Then there’s gems like the Grand as well so when people come to see a show at Blackpool they really get a special experience’ What advice would you give the young Joe starting out 50 years ago today? ‘Enjoy it more and remember life has a lot of ups and downs, but we learn from them. Tell people just be nice to each other, but above all come and see my shows. They will cheer you up for sure, and give thanks to everyone for their support’ Joe will be appearing at Viva Blackpool and Lytham Hall throughout November and December, for dates visit www.joelongthornembe.co.uk

Caring for your pet

A

rthritis in dogs and cats is one of the most common problems our pets can face as they get older and, as with humans, it can flare up in cold weather. Natural wear and tear, caused by aging, reduces the amount of cartilage that cushions the joints. This causes swelling and pain. Signs of arthritis in your pet include stiffness or a reluctance to exercise, which we usually notice in our pets after they have been resting. If they are struggling to groom themselves, are overly licking areas that might be painful or are protective of you touching certain areas then they will need to be seen by the vet. PDSA Vet Olivia AndersonNathan said ‘Pets with arthritis may seem to have a little less energy, preferring to curl up in their beds instead of going out on a walk or spending time in the outdoors. Cats can struggle to groom themselves properly and may have a noticeable deterioration in their coat quality.’ Arthritis can’t be cured, but it can be managed through medication and simple changes to a pet’s lifestyle. Olivia adds ‘It’s worth visiting your vet if you notice any symptoms, or suspect your pet may have arthritis. Painrelief and anti-inflammatory medication can be prescribed, and you’ll also be advice given on changes you can make at home to help make your pet more comfortable. Maintaining a healthy weight is very important because excess weight puts

Caring for pets with arthritis even more pressure on sore joints. It’s worth asking your vet about prescription diets or joint supplements for arthritis too, as these can beneficial.’

A typical treatment plan for a pet with arthritis could include:

‘When it comes to exercise, “little and often” helps keep joints mobile and puts them under less pressure than longer walks with extended periods of rest. Your vet or vet nurse will be able to give you an appropriate exercise and diet programme that is unique to your pet’s needs.’

supplements that may improve joint function or reduce inflammation • Changes to your pet’s diet to keep them a healthy weight and size • Regular periods of short gentle exercise • Hydrotherapy, physiotherapy and other complementary treatments, if advised by your vet

Hydrotherapy, physiotherapy and acupuncture can also be helpful to relieve the difficulties and pain associated with arthritis. Ask your vet for a referral to an accredited specialist.

• Medication prescribed for your pet by their vet to reduce pain and swelling

• Prescription diets or nutritional

Caring for an arthritic pet involves understanding from their owner, but with careful management and treatment, affected pets can still enjoy a good quality of life.

The unforgettable hero

A

Trinity Hospice volunteer has been named a community hero for not only raising money for the charity but for helping make a difference to people who are bereaved. Lorna Cunningham received the ‘Ben Ashworth Award’ for Fundraising at the BBC Radio Lancashire Community Heroes Awards 2018, which were held in Prestonin Sepptember. Lorna has helped to raise more than £10,000 in the last 12 months by making Memory Elephants for people who have lost loved ones. It has created what the hospice is calling an ‘Elephant in the Room movement’, as orders have come in from across the country, resulting in a waiting list of around six months. Lorna, who lives in Thornton, started making the Memory Elephants as a way of coping herself when her husband Iain died in 2014. Iain had been looked after by Trinity’s nurses, so she offered them to the hospice as a way of raising money. The elephants are made using cotton clothing, and as well as being a lasting memory of someone no longer here, they have opened up conversations around death and dying. After receiving her award, for which she was nominated by the Fundraising Team at Trinity Hospice, Lorna said ‘I never expected the elephants to have become this massive movement – never in my wildest dreams did I think they would take off like this. I was so proud to accept the award, and I did so on behalf of the hospice. This award and these elephants are not just about me; there are a lot of people working behind the scenes on the project. It’s certainly not happened by itself.’ The team at Trinity is hoping to pass the movement on to other hospices around the country, in the hope they can take it on to raise money for their own charities and to encourage more people to think and talk about death and dying. Trinity’s Head of Fundraising, Linzi Warburton, said ‘We are incredibly proud of Lorna, and we are so pleased that she has been rightly recognised through this award. No-one could have ever imagined the elephants would take off the way they have, and that’s testament to the hours of work, love and attention that goes into each unique product. We know they make a huge difference to the people who have received them, helping them remember their loved ones in such a special and lasting way. We are very hopeful that we can share this important movement with other hospices across the country, but for now we are celebrating Lorna, and her wonderful Elephants’. LINK-Mag Recipe

T

his cake with its crunchy nutty top is bursting with fruity cranberry and orange flavours and is a fabulous light alternative to Christmas cake. Serves: 15 Prep time: 20mins Cook time: 75 mins

You’ll Need:

For the cake 225g butter, softened 225g caster sugar 4 eggs, lightly beaten 225g self-raising flour 2 tsps baking powder 2 tbsps natural yoghurt 150g fresh BerryWorld Cranberries, roughly chopped Grated zest of one orange 50g pecans, roughly chopped For the crumble topping 100g plain flour 50g butter, cubed 25g Demerara sugar, plus one extra tbsp 25g pecans, roughly chopped

What to do:

Pre heat oven 160°C / Gas Mark 3. Grease and line the base of a 20cm loose bottomed deep cake tin. First make the crumble. Place the plain flour into a bowl, rub in the butter until it resembles fine breadcrumbs, and then stir in the sugar and pecans. Next, place the softened butter and caster sugar into a mixing bowl and beat until light and fluffy. Gradually add the beaten egg. Stir in the flour, baking powder, yogurt, cranberries, orange zest and pecans. 20

Cranberry, Pecan & Orange Crumble Cake Perfect to serve at teatime, or warm from the oven as a dessert with lightly whipped orange flavoured cream. Spoon into the prepared cake tin, top with the crumble, mixing a little bit into the top of the cake mix. Sprinkle over the extra one tablespoon of Demerara sugar. Cook for 1 hour 15 minutes or until golden and a skewer inserted in the middle comes out clean. Leave to cool for 15 minutes in the tin then carefully remove and cool on a wire rack. Serve cut into slices.

Cooks tip: To make a really special dessert serve with a cranberry and orange sauce spooned over. Simply place 250g of fresh cranberries into a saucepan with 100g sugar and a good squeeze of orange juice and a sprinkle of zest, add a little water and cook for a few minutes. Serve warm spooned over thick slices of the cake with a little cream or icecream - delicious.

Hospice is Alfie Boe’s birthday beneficiary

S

inging sensation Alfie Boe celebrated his birthday on September 29th, and his legions of fans donated to his chosen charity – Trinity Hospice and Brian House Children’s Hospice. Each year Alfie donates his birthday to one of his charities, and this year he has selected the Fylde coast’s hospices as birthday beneficiaries. In particular, Alfie is lending his support to the China Trekkers – a team of 22 people including Trinity staff who will spend five days walking along the Great Wall of China in aid of Brian House from next week. Donations can be made online via a page on JustGiving, set up by the Alfie Boe fan blog, thoughtsofjustafan. Alfie’s fans have been supporting Trinity Hospice and Brian House since Alfie became patron of the Bispham-based charity in 2011. Most recently they raised more than £1,200 during an Alfie Boe YouTube Marathon, where fans spent a weekend watching videos of the singer online and made a donation. Jane Ireland, who runs the fan blog said ‘Fans of Alfie are very dedicated and like to support his chosen charities as much as we can, and Trinity is one that we know is close to Alfie’s heart. Earlier this year, Alfie donated a portion of the ticket sale for his Fleetwood concert to Trinity and we at thoughtsofjustafan decided to continue to support Alfie and Trinity when the opportunity arose. Donating to Trinity seems like the perfect way to celebrate Alfie’s birthday and support his local charity at the same time.’ Among the China Trekkers is Trinity’s Corporate Fundraiser, Janet Atkins. She said ‘The whole team has been working hard in preparation for China, making ourselves mentally and physically ready for what we know will be a gruelling challenge. It isn’t going to be easy as we will be walking for up to eight hours each

day, but knowing we have Alfie’s support means so much to us and I know it will help us when things get really tough. Alfie has been a fantastic supporter to us over the years, and we are absolutely thrilled that he has chosen to support us again as part of his birthday celebrations. It means so much to us, and we’re so grateful to all the amazing fans he has who donate from around the world in his name.’ All the money raised through the China Trek will be spent providing respite and palliative care for children with life-limiting conditions on the Fylde coast, free at the point of need. Rae Morris comes home for Christmas

S

uccessful local musician Rae Morris returns home on Saturday 8th December to perform an intimate gig at Bootleg Social on Topping Street in Blackpool. Rae began writing songs while she was still a teenager and came to the attention of BBC Radio Lancashire DJ Sean McGinty after undertaking her first few gigs around the north west. McGinty put Morris forward to perform at the BBC Introducing Stage at the Reading and Leeds Festivals in 2011 and from there she was signed Universal Publishing the same month and Atlantic Records just one month later. Since then the singer has performed at festivals like Glastonbury and Bestival and released her debut album ’Unguarded’ in 2015. After touring the album far and wide, Morris took time off to write her second, ‘Someone Out There’, which

22

saw Morris venture deeper into more electronic territory and was released to widespread acclaim early in 2018. She performed at the Highest Point festival this summer and is looking to wow crowds again with another Lancashire date this winter. At the time of writing tickets were 60% sold out so get in there quickly to avoid dissapointment. Bootleg Social & Pink Rabbit Events in collaboration with ITB present Rae Morris with support from Tuscan Sun. Bootleg Social, Topping Street, Blackpool. wwwbootlegsocial.co.uk

Canada can do

T

he Canadian pyrotechnics team were named as Blackpool’s World Fireworks Champions for the second time in four years.

Firemaster Productions saw off competition from the French and Romanian teams with a spectacular display during the third heat of this year’s event. The Canadian team, who have been producing worldclass displays for over 10 years, won the same title on their last appearance in Blackpool in 2014. The team’s success was announced on 5th October as UK’s favourite pyrotechnic team, Titanium, put on a spectacular show to close this year’s spectacular competition. The displays are among the most popular events in Blackpool’s exciting calendar, featuring jaw-dropping displays – synched to music – by some of the most talented fireworks technicians in the world, attracting tens of thousands of spectators to Blackpool’s seafront each week. Cllr Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, said ‘This year has seen three exceptional displays and our congratulations go to Firemaster who did Canada proud with a superbly synchronised

show. The World Fireworks Championship is a firm favourite in the Blackpool calendar, illustrated by the sheer number of people who turn out to watch.’ The winner was chosen by a panel of judges including Cllr Campbell; Peter Sedgwick, owner of Blackpool’s piers; and Cheryl Tchobanian, owner of the Beach House Bar and Bistro who again sponsored the judges’ area.

Switch on in advance

T

he free wristband ballot for the Blackpool Illuminations Switch-On event in 2019 is open right now.

It follows the unprecedented demand for this year’s event when a capacity audience packed the Tower Festival Headland Arena to watch a spectacular fivehour concert, culminating in an unforgettable switchon by international music star, Alfie Boe. Since then, the VisitBlackpool team has been swamped with requests for information on next year’s event, which will take place on Friday 30th August. It will once again feature a star-studded concert produced in association with MTV. And the best thing is, it’s still free to register – all you have to do is enter the ballot to win wristbands.

Councillor Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council ‘Switch-On night is the biggest night in Blackpool’s calendar and the demand for wristbands gets bigger every year. This year’s SwitchOn was a huge success with Alfie Boe flicking the switch and some fabulous performances by the likes of Ella Eyre, Diversity, Jonas Blue and HRVY. It’s a night not to be missed and I would urge people to apply for their wristbands now – it could be the best free night out you’ll ever have!’

People can put their name in the hat by registering at www.visitblackpool.com/switchon for their chance to receive up to four wristbands per household.

The Switch-On ballot will remain open until Monday 29th July, 2019. From the start of August there will be a limited number of Golden Circle tickets available for sale which will guarantee attendance at the event.

This year, over 130,000 people applied for tickets to attend the event so registration has been opened early to give as many people as possible the chance to win some of the 20,000 tickets for next year’s event.

So, what are you waiting for? Visit www. visitblackpool.com/switchon to register now for your FREE Switch-On wristband!

Backgammons back

A

local business offering bespoke backgammon playing sets is celebrating after reaching its global sales target of 200 boards, picking up a shortlisting for a prestigious national design award and acquiring a legion of high profile fans in the process. Bone Club, founded by Poulton-le-Fylde designer and backgammon enthusiast, Guy Haslam (45), started out as a community for local backgammon players ten years ago. Haslam, who studied furniture design and antique restoration, identified a gap in the market for a championship sized backgammon board that could enable players, new and old, to have the experience of championship play at an affordable price (£149). Utilising his sculpture and carpentry skills, Haslam began designing and manufacturing the ‘ready to play’ collection of competition size backgammon boards, with the first hitting the market in 2016. Guy added this product range to his existing bespoke, handmade collection with private commissions offering boards made of leather, brass and Oak. What started out as a passion project has soon become a viable business with over 200 boards sold worldwide and a forecast to sell a further 100 before the close of 2018. Bone Club will also introduce a new range of board, ‘the good traditional’ which will be available from October onwards (RRP £299). In September, the Bone Club backgammon board was shortlisted for a prestigious UK Backgammon Federation award for ‘best design’. Alongside recognition from the world of backgammon, Bone Club has been well received by a number of high profile fans. International news giant Bloomberg purchased six boards for its summer party, the Malaysian royal family have a bespoke Bone Club board and twotime backgammon world champion and professional player Bill Robertie is also a fan of the brand. More recently, world-renowned drum and bass master, and MBE awarded DJ, Goldie joined the Bone Club fold. The international music legend, who is a huge fan of backgammon, has waxed lyrical about his love for his Bone Club board to his 90,000 Instagram followers, pitching himself against Hollywood actor Jason Statham for a game. Speaking about the boom of Bone Club, founder Guy Haslam commented ‘I started out the Bone

Club community as a way to reconnect with family and friends after relocating to the Fylde coast from Manchester ten years ago and I never imagined it would take the path that it has today. I’m hugely excited by innovating the boards and raising the profile of backgammon amongst new and global audiences. We’ve large ambitions to create new products, ranging from Carbon Fibre backgammon boards to WIFI backgammon boards, and are in talks with a US distributor to help take Bone Club Stateside. And with the likes of Goldie – who I’m still waiting to take up my challenge of a game – and other high profile players all talking about the game, I’m confident that we’ll see more young players coming through the ranks and making their own mark on backgammon.’ Already innovating the Bone Club proposition, Guy has adapted his competition sized board range to include roll up travel boards, and in order to drive further innovation, Bone Club has recently purchased Andrew Pinkus backgammon machinery and equipment to enhance its board manufacturing capabilities. With a true passion to being back the love of the game to everyone, Bone Clubs is building its community with regular events where everyone is welcome to come along, no matter what level of player you are. Those wishing to join the Bone Club backgammon community can find out more about events, and purchase the boards, at www.boneclub.co.uk. Bone Club’s are beginning to pop up around the county with regular club’s at Boca in Poulton-lefylde on a Wednesday night 7-10pm and FLOK in Manchester on a Sunday afternoon 4-7. Come join the club.
