f you buy a real Christmas tree, how can you make sure it stays looking its best over the festive season? Some 30% of people in the UK do buy the real thing each year, yet many are often left with more needles on the floor than on the tree within a week of putting it up - especially if they haven’t chosen a non-drop variety such as the ever-popular Nordmann fir. But if you give any Yuletide tree the care it needs, it shouldn’t drop too much. If you look after trees properly, most of them should look good throughout the festive season. Cut trees remain the most popular, and it is essential that they should be fresh when purchased. The needles should not be dull and dried up, the branches not brittle. If you gently shake the tree, the outer needles should not fall off. When you’ve bought your tree, keep it outside in a cool, shaded place, preferably standing in water, until it is required indoors. Before bringing it inside, cut about half an inch off the base of the trunk to open up the pores of the tree and then place it securely in a water-holding stand or wedge it in a bucket with pebbles, small stones or screwed-up newspaper and place it away from direct heat. Anyone who places the tree next to a radiator is asking for trouble. Keep the container topped up with water every day, as trees can get through a pint a day. About 8.5 million trees are sold in this country every Christmas, of which half are Nordmann firs. The Fraser fir (Abies fraseri) which is popular in the eastern United States is narrower than other trees and therefore more suitable for smaller rooms. Look for growers who are situated in an isolated place away from urban centres. They are less likely to get a big retail market and you may get a better deal and a better tree from them. Remember that trees sold retail in urban areas may have come from out of town and may have been exposed 8
Don’t get the needle at Christmas By Hannah Stephenson
to drying winds in transit. They could have been cut weeks earlier. Ask the retailer whether his trees are delivered either once at the beginning of the season or at different times during the period. Some people may opt for a tree that will last for years. “If you are looking for a tree you can plant in the garden afterwards, go for a container-grown tree. You can plant it out after Christmas and may be able to bring it in again next year. You should put it in a sheltered spot initially and slowly acclimatise it to the open before planting in its final home, making sure the root collar is at ground level and to water it well.
How to keep your Christmas tree healthy
Choose one with a good shape and if you opt for a cut tree, pick one that has at least 30cm of clear trunk at the base. When you get it home, saw the bottom 3cm off the trunk of a cut tree and stand it in a bucket of water, somewhere cool. Clamp it securely into a stand with a water reservoir and top this up regularly. If the water disappears quickly, this is a good sign as it means the tree is absorbing it. Stand trees in a cool part of the room, well away from radiators. A living tree will do best in a cool room, porch or conservatory, especially if you intend to keep it. Stand the pot of the living tree in a deep saucer and keep the saucer topped up with water. Remember that Christmas trees prefer life outdoors - so leave it till the last minute to buy your tree and it should last you through the festive season.

Money matters with Martin Lewis
Free cash for switching bank accounts
T
here are laws against bribery. Luckily they don’t apply to banks wanting to bung you free money in return for your custom. There’s a banking price war on right now which means you can earn up to £200 for switching account. So take a bribe, and get some extra cash in the kitty. And don’t just do this for the money. I get more complaints about banks than any other sector apart from energy, yet people loyally stick with the perpetrators for years. If that’s you – stop bitching and start switching – many of the accounts that pay have decent service too.
Switching is easy, they do it all for you.
Before I get to the best-buys, let me deal with the “isn’t switching bank a nightmare?” question. I’m sure you’ve heard stories. Yet do ask people, when, this happened. For five years now we’ve had the switching guarantee in place, and that changed everything - for the better. To get the free cash you’ll be credit scored (it’s not too harsh) and will need to go through banks official switching services. The switching guarantee means you’re switched within seven working days. Your new bank moves direct debits and standing orders for you (some require at least two to be moved), and closes your old account. All payments to your old account are automatically forwarded. In a recent twitter poll I did on this, 76% said switching 10
was hassle-free and easy, like Sophie who says: “I’ve switched 2 accounts in the last few years. Was so easy I persuaded my parents to do the same”. Most of the rest only had minor issues.
The top current account give-aways
These change regularly, for full daily updated details and all the tips and eligibility criteria see my full guide at www.moneysavingexpert.com/bestbankaccounts. Here’s a quick summary of the top deals at the time of writing…
Free £200 (£150 upfront, £50 if you stay) + 5%
fixed savings. Switch to the hsbc.co.uk Advance account and you can get £150 free cash. Stay with it for a year and you’ll get another £50. It also lets you save up to £250 per month in its linked 5% fixed regular savings account. With HSBC like most banks there’s a minimum monthly pay in. Here it’s a relatively large £1,750 a month equivalent to £25,900 a year. This is effectively just a way to get you to pay in your salary. Yet if you don’t earn enough to meet this, there’s a way around the rule. If you earn £1,000 a month, then just withdraw £750 and pay it straight back in and you will qualify. When do you get the money? Within 30 calendar days of switching.

£125 plus 2% cashback on bills. Switch to most NatWest. co.uk current accounts and you’ll get £125. Among those is the NatWest Reward account where for a monthly £2 fee you get 2% cashback on household bills that you pay via direct debit from it, including council tax, water, energy and broadband – many can earn £100 a year from this. Its minimum monthly pay-in is £1,500 (equal to an annual salary of £21,500). When do you get the money? It’ll be paid in February and you’ll need to keep your account till then. Free gadgets plus top service. Though not free cash, switch
to FirstDirect.com and you can choose a free gift from choice of gadgets (e.g. £120 Amazon Echo or £120 Fitbit), or a £150 Expedia voucher. Plus it’s won every customer service polls I’ve done for the past eight years - 89% rate it ‘great’. You’ll also get a £250 0% overdraft, and can open a linked 5% regular saver. The minimum monthly pay in is £1,000 (equal to a £12,675 salary).
12
When do you get the freebies? Within 2 weeks of paying in your first £1,000 you’re emailed instructions on how to get the freebie which can then take up to a month or so to arrive.
Free £125 M&S vouchers with no monthly pay in. Switch
to bank.marksandspencer.com and you get a £125 M&S gift card with no-minimum monthly pay in. Though if you do pay in £1,250 a month (equal to a £17,080 salary) you can earn an additional £5 a month voucher for a year. It also has a linked 5% fixed regular savings account. When do you get the money? Within a month of switching.
Overdrawn? You can switch too…
Being overdrawn doesn’t stop you switching, though you may not get the same overdraft limit as your current account. For those with smaller overdrafts, the First Direct account above is useful as, as well as the free gadgets it offers an interest-free £250 overdraft – an easy way to avoid costs. Alternatively, Nationwide. co.uk’s FlexDirect gives a year’s 0% overdraft. Yet there’s no set limit - it depends on your credit score. Though as after the year you pay 50p a day if you’re overdrawn, do use the time to try and ditch the debt. Martin Lewis is the Founder and Chair of MoneySavingExpert.com. Go for an 'elfy' run
S
chools across the Fylde coast are gearing up to get ‘fit and elfie’ by taking part in an Elf Run for Brian House Children’s Hospice this festive season. It’s the second year the Bispham-based hospice has organised an Elf Run, inviting schools to do a sponsored run, walk or dance for the charity. Last year 18 schools took part, raising more than £15,500. This year is already expected to do better, with 21 schools signed up from across Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre. The Elf Run is a flexible event, allowing schools to pick when and where their run takes place. Children and adults taking part get a special elf hat to wear, and raise sponsorship for the area’s only children’s hospice.
Local schools are also signing up to support Brian House by holding a Festive Jumper Day in the run up to Christmas. Chloe added 'We’re always surprised at just how imaginative our young supporters can be, but every penny raised makes such a difference to the children and families who need our support here at Brian House. We’d love to come to speak to any schools or young supporters who want to know more about the work we do and how they can help.'
Community Fundraiser Chloe Rossall said 'We were so pleased that last year’s Elf Run went so well, and that schools were asking us about this year’s event. We are really excited for this year’s Elf Run, and we’re thrilled that 11 of the schools already signed up are brand new to our festive fundraising. We have a real mix of pupils ready to go, from primary and secondary Visit www.brianhouse.org.uk/elf-run for more schools to those in further education. We even have information about Brian House Children’s Girlguiding groups signed up to take part.' Hospice, and to sign up for this year’s Elf Run.
Festive pound parking
B
lackpool Town Centre is to benefit from discounted parking and public transport fares in a joint campaign to encourage people to shop local this Christmas. Throughout December anyone will be able to park for just £1 for any three hour period at the Central, East Topping Street and West Street car parks in the town centre. In addition, Blackpool Transport will offer £1 tickets to use trams and buses after 5:30pm on the three late night shopping Thursdays – December 6th, 13th and 20th – and all day every Sunday during December. The discounted parking offer will start on Saturday 1st December, which is National Small Business Saturday as well as the day of Blackpool’s Christmas Lights Switch-On in St John’s Square. It will run until January 1st. Cllr Mark Smith, Blackpool Council’s Cabinet Member for Business and Economic Development, said 'We are delighted to be able to announce discounted car parking throughout the month of December on three of our main town centre car parks. It means that people will be able to park for three hours for just £1. We hope that will encourage our own residents to shop in their own town centre this Christmas and will also provide an attractive deal for visitors coming from out-of-town.' A Town Centre BID spokesperson added 'Blackpool town centre has so much to offer to Christmas 14
shoppers in terms of the mix of independent and national brands, illuminated streets and a vastlyimproved range of cafes and restaurants. We hope the discounted offer will be a great incentive for people to not just shop in Blackpool this Christmas, but also enjoy some of the rich entertainment that is on offer at our theatres and venues.' This year sees a number of top-quality Christmas productions and events in and around the town centre including the Beauty & The Beast pantomime at the Grand Theatre; The Wizard Of Oz at the Opera House; Santa’s Sleigh at the Pavilion Theatre in the Winter Gardens, Aladdin at The Blackpool Tower Circus and A Very Messy Christmas 11 at Bootleg Social Club. In addition, there is a wide range of Christmas shows and party nights at leading venues such as Viva. The discounted tram and bus tickets will be available on three late night shopping evenings and on the five Sundays in December. t's not going to be a silent night on Saturday 22nd December as 17 local acts take to the stage at Bootleg Social for A Very Messy Christmas 11 to help raise funds for the Blackpool Food Bank. For the 11th year (not in a row) 'A Very Messy Christmas' returns with around 17 local acts taking to the stage to completely ruin Christmas for everyone, ensuring your festive season is ruined more than that time the pony shaped present under the tree turned out to be a fold out clothes drying maiden. Each act on the night gets a three song set list, at least one song has to be a cover of a classic Christmas tune, this gives the audience a chance to, not only sample some of the best new original music in the area, but get the chance to sing-a-long to some festive anthems. All profits on the night will be donated be to the Blackpool Food Bank, who help local people who are living below the poverty line. They work together with front-line agencies across Blackpool to provide emergency food parcels for people in need. There will be charity buckets going around on the night so bring some change and please DIG DEEP. You can find out more about the Blackpool Food Bank at www. blackpoolfoodbank.co.uk There will be performances on the night from: Jekyll Laura Catlow, The Fat White Dukes, Dischord, The Poly-Esters, Oceans Over Alderaan, The Screbs, The Getsettes, Uncle Paul, Those ******* Snowflakes, The 16

big rebellious, unforgiving stomper of an album from hard working local rockers The Senton Bombs is out now and well worth a listen ‘Outsiders’ is the new studio album from The Senton Bombs. Tipped by the likes of Classic Rock, Powerplay Magazine and Total Rock Radio to be one of the next breakout bands, the Bombs have capitalised on the success of critically acclaimed 2016 album ‘Mass Vendetta’ which catapulted the band toward a global audience. With their now familiar blend of styles, offering variety from first to last, the band evolved their Southern and Classic Rock influences whilst returning to their punk and roll roots to create eleven more hookfilled, lyrically inspired, head-banging anthems. The Senton Bombs formed in the seaside village of Bispham, making their debut as the Terrorists in the summer of 2004 they made an immediate impact on the local scene and word spread about their style, originally branded as ‘Punk Infected Rock n Roll’, as well as their unpredictable and riotous live performances. In 2016 the band agreed a deal with German record label ‘7Hard’, which
The Senton Bombs would see their fourth album Mass Vendetta released into the global market by the labels various distribution partners, including Sony and Universal. Countless glowing reviews were received with Classic Rock’s Mark Beaumont describing the album as “Catchy firebrand riffs designed to ring hell’s own schoolbell”. National radio play followed with Planet Rock and Kerrang picking up the
subsequent single releases. In 2017 the band made several festival appearances, including their first appearance at the world’s biggest punk festival ‘Rebellion’ in their hometown of Blackpool. ‘Outsiders’ is available everywhere now, for further info head to www. sentonbombs. com

The awards were given out to showcase Wyre’s sporting talent after clubs, coaches, players and parents were asked to nominate those in community who deserved to be recognised for their efforts. The winners of the 2018 awards are: • Coach of the Year - Daniel Orwin, Fylde Rugby Club • Young Achiever of the year - Gracie Slater, Everton Ladies • Volunteer of the Year - Ian Davies, Norcross Cricket Club • Volunteer of the Year - Glenn Holt, Chaucer Primary School • Primary School of the Year - Chaucer Primary School, Fleetwood • Secondary School of the Year - Garstang Community Academy • Lifetime Achievement - Commitment to Sport - Norman Cowburn, Fleetwood & District Swimming club • Sports Club of the Year - Wyre Netball Club • Community Project of the year - Pilling 20-20 Wyre’s Sports Awards celebrate excellence and dedication in local sport and recognise the coaches, volunteers and clubs who have made a real difference.
They celebrate sporting achievements across the borough and pay tribute to those who have shown commitment and enthusiasm in order to achieve sporting excellence, and to those who have dedicated their time and efforts to individuals or clubs. Councillor Lynne Bowen, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Health and Community Engagement at Wyre Council commented ‘This has been a great opportunity to congratulate and thank those who have shown a strong commitment to sporting excellence in Wyre. We have lots of inspirational individuals and groups across the borough and the people here today really deserve this recognition for their hard work and dedication. Sport and local clubs can have such a positive effect on people of all ages and abilities, not just from a physical health point of view, but also in respect of team spirit and confidence building there’s so much to be gained.’ All the winners will now go forward to represent Wyre at the Lancashire Sports Awards, the largest celebration of amateur sport in the county, which took place in November.

Caring for your pet
A
pet losing their sight might seem life-changing, both for them and their owners, yet with some adaptation blind pets can often continue to lead normal, happy lives. PDSA vet Olivia Anderson-Nathan says ‘Some diseases cause sudden loss of all sight, whereas with others it’s a gradual deterioration. Conditions such as cataracts and glaucoma can lead to pets losing their sight, but these illnesses usually affect older pets. For young dogs, sight-loss might be the result of an injury. Luckily, our pets have an extremely welldeveloped sense of smell which they use to help compensate for blindness.’ Owners concerned about their pet’s vision should speak to their vet, as some diseases such as glaucoma are also painful, so need to be treated as soon as possible. Some eye conditions are a sign of other diseases, like cataracts and diabetes. The progression of certain conditions could also be slowed with treatment, so early diagnosis is important. Olivia added ‘Your vet will check your pet’s eyes and general health to see whether there is an underlying condition causing vision loss. If a medical condition is diagnosed, they will discuss treatment options and provide guidance and support.’ How pets react to sight-loss varies depending on several factors. If they learn new skills quickly, then they often adjust more easily to reduced or no vision. Older pets may already have a reduced sense of hearing or smell and so may find it harder to adapt, though because their loss of sight is usually more gradual they often learn to compensate well. Olivia added ‘If slight-loss is gradual, pets can find it easier to adjust than if there is a sudden loss. Confident pets may also adapt better than more anxious ones, but the amount of support an owner provides
Coping with Blindness in Pets is also a big factor in helping pets adjust to sight loss.’ There are several steps owners can take to care for a pet suffering from impaired vision. To help them learn their environment and surroundings, keep furniture in the same place and never leave anything at pet level around that they could trip over or walk into. Keeping their bed, food and water bowls in the same place will also help. Access to hazards such as fireplaces, balconies and open staircases should be blocked off to blind pets. When taking them out, tread well-known routes until they get used to things, and don’t let them off-lead unless they’re in a secure area. Olivia said ‘Once they‘ve adapted to the loss of vision,
many pets lead normal active lives. Teaching your dog “up” and “down” commands to help them navigate steps and curbs, giving them confidence out on walks. Many blind dogs can still enjoy time off lead in a safe space as well as walks in new places. Loss of sight in a beloved pet can be upsetting, but with a little care and patience owners can help their pet to adapt, ensuring they continue to have a good quality of life.’ PDSA is the UK’s leading vet charity. We’re on a mission to improve pet wellbeing through prevention, education and treatment. Support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery helps us reach even more pet owners with vital advice and information. www.pdsa.org.uk

his quick and easy galette with shallots and chorizo serves as an impressive addition to your festive party buffet. Serves: 6 Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 40 minutes
You’ll need
100g cooking chorizo, sliced 8 shallots, quartered 1 sheet ready rolled puff pastry 2 roast peppers, sliced, from a jar is fine 125g mozzarella, torn into pieces 1 egg, beaten Basil leaves to serve
What to do Heat the oven to 220C/200C fan/Gas 7. Cook the chorizo in a frying pan until crisp on each side. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. Reduce the heat and cook the shallots gently while you put together the rest of the tart. Don’t over brown the chorizo and shallots as they will continue to cook in the oven. Unroll the pastry and gently pull out the long sides and trim off the corners so it becomes more circular. Lay it on a nonstick baking tray. Leaving a 3cm border of pastry clear, fork lots of small holes in the centre area of the pastry then scatter with the chorizo, pepper, chunks of mozzarella and finally the shallots. Carefully fold the edges of the pastry up to slightly overlap the edges of the filling. Brush the crust with egg wash and bake in the oven for 30-35 minutes until the pastry is crisp and puffed up and the filling is dry and browned.

LINK-Mag Entertainment by Ann Montini I have enjoyed it. A huge thank you to the audiences that have embraced it and been so kind. Do you think we will we see you behind the curtain more and more now? GW – If successful yes I would like to do more, but I would never give up performing as I love it so much, I mean the crowd and the thrill of theatre-goers coming in – it’s a magical place.
Gary of all trades Ann Montini meets Musicals star and actor Gary Wilmot M.B.E
G
ary Wilmott has starred on TV, stage, film and has now produced his own play – is there nothing this man cannot do?
Back at the Palladium doing Panto? GW - It’s a wonderful production and people have such a great time when they come along, plus I get to act daft for a few weeks. Seriously though, I love it and the production team were brave bringing large scale pantomime back to the theatre, but it's paid off. Dame? GW - Well you start off as Prince Charming, then the baddie, and after that, you know, the Dame. Which I love as the children love it, and of course there are so many great interactions with them, kids don’t hold back do they. How do you feel about Strictly Come Dancing? GW - I would love to go on that show, seriously can you make it happen Ann? It’s my favourite show as it's showbiz glamour and such fun really, but also you get to learn things from true professionals which is such a bonus. New thriller 'Sweet Lorraine' was written and directed by you GW - It's been so well received and, yes, it's taken some time, but again I feel it’s the right time to do this, and above all else 40
Do you have any plans for a new album? GW - I have done a few and enjoyed success with them so yes, maybe now would be a good time to look at that genre again, but it takes time to do and once you're touring, there isn't a lot of that to spare.
You got your break on talent show 'New Faces' do you recommend that route to success ?
GM - I think go for it and enjoy it, but it was a kinder time in many respects back then. The people who were judging you had talent, but we live in the present, and if this gets you the break then why hold back. Is there any role that you wished you had taken or still wish to do? GW - so many really, but again its timing and what you are doing at that moment, but I always believe the next role is the best, as you learn and grow from those roles don’t you ? Finally let’s talk your MBE – was that a thrill? GW – I was honestly honoured Ann, because you do not expect it, but boy what a moment that was, and I do have to pinch myself at times when I see it written down. I can honestly say it was such a great moment in my life – also, thank you to all my fans who keep coming to see me it means so much Find out more about Gary and what he is up to at www.garywilmot.co.uk
