LINK-MAG Gardening

Match your Garden’s colours to your personality By Hannah Stephenson

H

ave you ever thought about what your favourite garden colours say about your personality?

Some 80% of people admit their moods are positively affected when surrounded by colourful plants. Yet more than a fifth wished they could be braver and have the confidence to experiment with colour. Most people think colour is important in the garden, yet 76% of people don’t think about the way in which colours can work together or about the colours they are planting, research found.

Find out which personality you are: Romantic: You love life and see the good in everything. Swaying towards pinks and pastels, creams and ivories. Your palette might include the shrub Fuchsia ‘Tom Thumb’, which flowers throughout the summer in a sunny border and looks good surrounded by pink roses or poet’s jasmine (Jasmine officinale). Other choices for the romantic could include Magnolia grandiflora ‘Exmouth’, an impressive cream-flowered shrub, underplanted with bluebells. Vivacious: You are confident and bubbly. You like bold colours including azure, tangerine, coral and cobalt blue. Suitable plantings would be French marigold (Tagetes ‘Safari Tangerine’) with zebra grass or plantain lily, and Grace Ward (Lithodora diffusa), an evergreen which produces masses of bright blue flowers in summer and is perfect cascading over walls, planted near Anemone hupehensis ‘September Charm’, which produces soft pink flowers in late summer, and sea holly with its blue hues.

20

Mysterious: You lean towards deep reds and aubergines, metallics and splashes of vibrant purple. Good plantings for you might include the rich blue perennial Delphinium ‘Blue Nile’ with the lantern tree (Crinodendron hookerianum), an evergreen shrub which has dark, glossy green leaves and red flowers hanging from its branches. The blues of viola and larkspur would also suit your colour palette, along with the silver-grey foliage of mugwort (Artemisia ‘Powys Castle’) and the reddish purple hues of the smoke bush (Cotinus ‘Grace’). Sultry: Your favourite colour is black but you also like subtle, soft shades of charcoal and stony taupes. There will be statement colours such as red to add pizzazz to your planting schemes. Good choices for you include lilyturf (Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’), known for its grass-like black leaves in the summer, lilac flowers and black fruits, providing stunning colour contrast with the annual Scotch marigold (calendula), with its dark orange, daisylike flowers, which needs full sun to be at its best. A Japanese maple (Acer palmatum) such as ‘Bloodgood’ may also feature in the sultry personality’s garden scheme, with its deep red leaves which turn a brilliant red in the autumn. Don’t plant it in direct sunlight as the leaves burn easily.

------------------------------------------------Best of the bunch Buddleia

Walk down any street in late summer and you are likely to see a buddleia, or butterfly bush as it is known because it attracts butterflies, with its cone-shaped flowers in shades of purple, magenta and white.

All too often this shrub looks gaunt and twiggy, with flowers appearing at the top of tall, bare branches. This may be because of insufficient pruning, but in fact buddleias are really easy to grow in any reasonable garden soil which is well drained. The most popular variety, B. davidii, grows to 2.4m (8ft) or more and looks good at the back of a border, while for those with smaller gardens, Thompson & Morgan has brought out the dwarf B. Buzz, billed as the world’s first patio variety, which will sit in a large pot and produce the same attractive blooms through to September. Personally, though, I prefer the larger types in vivid colours including ‘Black Knight’, which has dark purple blooms and ‘Royal Red’, with its purple-red blooms. Hard prune the shrubs in March, cutting back last year’s growth to within 2in of the old wood.

Things to do this month • Layer honeysuckle, wisteria and passion

flower by bending the shoots down to the ground, slitting the stem, dusting with rooting powder and burying the stem in the soil, securing it with a large stone.

• Propagate tender perennials from

cuttings, including argyranthemums, osteospermum, fuchsia, pelargonium and felicia.

• Apply mulches of compost over the soil to suppress weeds and retain moisture.

• Keep an eye out for rose suckers and

remove them from below ground level.

Good enough to eat... preserving herbs If you want to save some of your summer herbs to use in the winter months, you can do this by either freezing or drying them.

Parsley doesn’t dry well so you’re better off chopping it up finely and placing it in ice-cube trays with a dessert spoonful of water per cube. Bunches of woody herbs such as rosemary, which goes so well with roast lamb, can be hung up in small bunches to dry in a cool place out of sunlight. When they are dry, rub the needs off the stems and store them in dry jars. Sage leaves can also be picked in summer, dipped in boiling water and again in cold to keep the colour, then placed on baking sheets to dry in the airing cupboard, before storing in screw top jars. Save coriander seeds by spreading them to dry on a shallow tray before storing in a glass jar in a cool dark place.

• Tie in long shoots of new growth of wisteria to continue its framework.

• Support new growth of dahlias by tying them in to existing stakes.

• Check plants for clematis wilt. Cut back

the wilted shoots to healthy tissue. This may mean pruning below the soil surface.

• Pick courgettes before they become marrows.

• Pick your bean and pea pods as they

mature, to stop them becoming tough and stringy later in the summer.

• Raise biennials and perennials by sowing now, in pots or in a nursery bed, for planting out in the autumn.

• Pinch out the tips of trailing plants in

hanging baskets to make them bush out. Deadhead every few days.

We Carer Lot

A

new course aimed at giving unpaid carers all the support and information they need to look after a loved one at home has been launched at an afternoon tea event. The CARE (Carers and Relative Experience) Group has been created by Trinity Hospice in partnership with Blackpool Carers Centre to offer hands-on experience and advice about how to care for someone who is ill, while remaining in their own home. It was launched during a special event at Beaverbrooks House in June. The programme is the brainchild of Trinity nurse Claire Frith, who wrote a research paper on how services could be improved for unpaid carers.

this type of information being available to everyone who might find themselves in a caring position. Something that would give them the knowledge they need and to empower them to take more control.’

Claire, who was one of the first nurses for Trinity’s ‘Hospice at Home’ service, said she felt there had been a gap for unpaid carers and a lack of information in the more practical aspects of caring for someone at home. Claire came to know some of those struggles as her own family went through them as they looked after her granddad at home.

The CARE Group will be a rolling programme for Blackpool residents, consisting of six sessions over a three month period. Each session will talk about different topics as well as give practical demonstrations.

She said ‘As a qualified nurse, I was pretty much the first port of call for my family. They were turning to me for advice and help. At one point my Nanna had spent an hour trying to change granddad’s bedsheets, frightened she was going to hurt him. When I got there and did it in 10 minutes it made me realise that the little things we do in day to day nursing may be more difficult for less experienced carers. That’s when it came to me about

Amanda Madden, an Adult Carers Support Worker at Blackpool Carers Centre said ‘We’re delighted to partner with Trinity on this exciting venture and proud that our service will be at the hub of this programme. From the point of referral, we can support carers into and through our Adult Carer service, cancer and dementia specific services and also now throughout the course, providing additional aftercare support as required.’

Claire added ‘I don’t think people are often aware of how difficult it can be to look after someone at home, and this course will talk about those difficulties. It will help to prepare them and educate them while providing practical skills.’

Carers can self-refer through Blackpool Carers Centre or speak to a health care professional, with the first sessions taking place in September. www.blackpoolcarers.org

SEAT Arona 1.0 FR by Rob Auchterlonie

S

omeone at SEAT must have bought a blooming big bag of ‘A’ letters at a Spanish car boot sale a while ago.

We’ve had a succession of models with names beginning and ending in that letter: Arosa, Alhambra, Altea, Ateca and now comes the Arona – the latest in a line of cars that have progressively built up the profile of the VW Group owned brand to a level where their popularity is considerably higher than in the past. SEAT are going places – just like the customers who are finding the sporty aspirations of the latest models to their liking. Arona – an Ibiza SUV - is a baby version of the popular Ateca, and the twin exhaust outlets on the FR version sampled here add to the sporty appearance of the newcomer, and further enhanced by the two tone paint finish – copper bronze body topped by a grey roof and tidy alloys. It shares the same chassis and engines as the popular supermini but obviously sits a bit taller on the road. 30

There’s a more than sensible amount of standard equipment on board for your sub 20k price tag. The 115ps 1.0 litre three cylinder engine under the bonnet has had plenty words of praise heaped on it since the VW Group introduced it a while back, and it’s safe to say it does a creditable job of moving the Arona around. Maybe it sounds less refined than you’d expect a smart car like this to be and there is some noticeable vibration through the pedals quite a lot of the time but it scores on efficiency, a willing little worker buzzing away and imbibing the Arona with acceptable performance. The fact the engine is used and adapts well to so many VW Group products speaks volumes about its useability. A sub 10 second 0-62 and decent torque makes it well able to keep up with and in some instances outperform the rest of the traffic around it. Ride quality is more than acceptable for a car of this ilk and there’s a decent amount of interior space for the occupants. It’s maybe not what you’d call luxurious

but then that’s not what you’re buying into at this level of the market. Not yet anyway. It’ll give you good, honest family motoring and when you want it, a bit of dynamic driving too as the drive select button gives you a few option settings. Matching the claimed fuel economy is something you could spend a lifetime trying to achieve, and if you work the three cylinder hard it develops a thirst, but there are diesel variants that sip instead of gulp at the contents of the tank. SEAT have taken a different approach to the Arona line-up by not having an entry level model with everything extra which traditionally very few people would ever buy anyway, so as a result the residual values are expected to hold up well, as they do with Leon and the popular Ateca. The poor reputation of the past

has been successfully dispelled. Variants on offers here in the UK include SE, SE Technology, FR, FR Sport, XCELLENCE and XCELLENCE Lux. Engine choice is a pair of 1.0 three cylinders (95 and 115ps), a 1.5 150ps petrol and two 1.6 diesels (95 and 115ps). The arrival of Arona means the transformation of the company has move on yet another step. FOR: above average for this class, decent equipment AGAINST: short on thrills

Something in the air

B

lackpool’s two-day Air Show is back this summer with a fantastic programme of aerial entertainment.

The spectacular free event will take place on Blackpool Promenade on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th August and will include a breathtaking finale by the worldfamous Red Arrows. The event, which is being sponsored by Northern, will showcase the very best in British aviation with a whole host of amazing flying machines and some of the country’s most talented pilots. The programme will begin shortly after 1.30pm on both days, with the best viewing points on the promenade between North and Central Piers. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, which features a Spitfire, a Hurricane and a Lancaster Bomber, will take part in a hugely patriotic display. Crowds will also be able to see an RAF Typhoon thunder across the horizon; see spectacular aerobatic displays from the Turbulent Team, Wing Walkers and The Blades; and view some of the world’s best aircraft flying over the iconic Blackpool seafront including a Strikemaster, Chipmunk and Swordfish. The RAF Red Arrows team will bring the show to an unforgettable finale on the second day with another awesome display of speed, agility and precision. Cllr Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, said ‘The Blackpool Air Show is always one of the highlights of Blackpool’s summer. The line-up of planes and stunt teams looks brilliant and it promises to deliver a fantastic two days of free entertainment for all the family. I would encourage people to stay over for the whole weekend and take the opportunity to enjoy everything that Blackpool has to offer.’

38

Craig Harrop, Interim Regional Director at Northern said ‘We’re delighted to be the main sponsors of the upcoming Blackpool Air Show. Northern play an integral part in the tourism sector, with Blackpool being one of our busiest destinations. We look forward to supporting the event in our role as the main transport provider, and also as headline sponsor and are excited to welcome people from all over the UK into Blackpool on our services.’ Visitors are encouraged to arrive into the resort early to avoid any traffic congestion. To complement the aerial programme, there will be plenty to see and do on the ground before the show starts with a whole range of stalls, stands and concessions in front of The Blackpool Tower including the Red Arrows ground team. In addition, there will be a fantastic selection of food and drink concessions. The official Blackpool Air Show programme will be available to purchase on the day from the VisitBlackpool stand in the main Air Show village or from the VisitBlackpool Tourist Information Centre located at Festival House opposite Blackpool Tower. For full programme timings and regular updates, go to www.visitblackpool. com/airshow. There will be further details nearer the event on special parkand-ride facilities, so keep checking updates. Please note that the programme is potentially subject to change due to both aircraft availability and weather conditions.

Caring for your pet

V

eterinary charity PDSA is urging owners to keep their pets safe in the sun, to protect them from dangerous conditions such as heatstroke and cancer. PDSA vet, Olivia Anderson-Nathan, said ‘Although we might be aware of the risks of the sun to ourselves, many owners are unaware that our pets face the same dangers of sunburn, heatstroke and even skin cancer. Heatstroke, for example, can have devastating consequences. Bear in mind on a hot day that dogs can’t control their body temperature the way we can. They are wearing a fur coat, and as they only have sweat glands in their paws they mainly cool down through panting, which isn’t very effective.’ Olivia continued ‘One of the most dangerous causes of heatstroke or hyperthermia is leaving pets inside a vehicle during warm or hot weather. But leaving them in the garden for too long without shade, or taking them for a walk during the hottest part of the day, can also be very dangerous. Any dog can get heatstroke, but this is especially important for owners of flat-faced, overweight or chronically ill dogs to consider, as they will be at even greater risk.’ The temperature inside cars during warm weather can rapidly soar, leaving pets inside at risk of suffering fatal heatstroke. The charity warns that common measures like parking in the shade or keeping the windows open are not effective, as temperatures inside the car can still skyrocket in these circumstances. Exposure to heat and direct sunlight can cause serious cases of heatstroke and excessive sun exposure can even cause skin cancer in some unlucky pets with light-coloured fur, which affords even less protection from the UV rays. PDSA vets are urging owners to take extra care to keep their beloved four-legged friends safe.

minutes, which can cause fatal heatstroke. ‘Not long’ is too long.

• Avoid exercising pets during the hottest hours of the day. Instead, go out early in the morning or in the evening. Keep strenuous exercise to a minimum and give them constant access to cool, indoor areas.

• Use a pet-safe sun cream

recommended by your vet, especially on pets with white or thin fur, focusing on the nose and ears.

• If you see unexplained sores

or ulcers on your pets’ skin, see a vet urgently. Early diagnosis and treatment may save your pet’s life.

• Never leave pets in cars,

Money matters with Martin Lewis

Is there any point in being married?

Y

ou meet someone, fall in love, and hearts pop out of the sky when you look at them. They’re the person you want to spend the rest of your life with. But is there any point in actually being married? Much of the answer is mixed up with complex competing views on tradition, religion, convention and emotion. Many have happy, long term stable relationships without wedding ceremonies. Yet as the Royal Wedding has heightened conversations about the institution of marriage, I thought it worth explaining what difference it makes to your finances too.

rate taxpayer and the other a nontaxpayer. The non-taxpayer can apply to have 10% (£1,190) of their tax-free allowance shifted to the taxpayer. This means £1,190 of income they were taxed on at 20% is now taxfree – a £238 gain this year done via altering your tax code. If eligible you can back claim to when it started too, so that’s a cheque for £662 – making a total of £900. It takes five minutes to do at www.gov.uk/marriage-allowance – it’s the non-taxpayer who must apply. If you’ve questions read my www.mse.me/marriagetax guide for full help.

Marriage, and these days civil partnerships too, still count in many UK laws and rules. People talk about couples who live together and are unmarried as ‘common law partners’ - yet that’s just a phrase - it doesn’t usually give you rights. So, here’s my list of the seven main financial rights of marriage including civil partnerships - over just co-habiting (don’t blame me, I’m just the messenger), you’ll note, many of them involve death!

1. You can get a free £900 tax break if you’re married This is deliberate government social engineering to reward marriage through the tax system. It was launched three years ago and applies where one is a basic 20% 40

Exactly how much depends on a range of factors such as retirement date and more. And if you’re not at the state pension age yourself and remarry before you reach it, you won’t be entitled to it. There’s more info on the exact rules at www.gov. uk/state-pension/inheritance. It’s also worth noting many workplace, personal and private pension schemes will only pass on benefits to a surviving partner if they are married too.

3. Your spouse won’t pay inheritance tax. When you die, any money, property or assets left to your spouse is automatically exempt from inheritance tax.

4. Unused inheritance tax allowances can be transferred.

2. You may get a bigger state pension if your spouse dies If your married partner dies you may be able to get extra payments from their pension or national insurance contributions as long as you’ve not already built up the full basic state pension entitlement yourself, as well as inherit some of their additional state pension.

There’s no inheritance tax to pay on the first £325,000 of anyone’s estate. Tax is only paid above that. If any of this is unused when your spouse dies, then the remainder can be passed across to you. For example, if a wife left everything to her husband, so there was no inheritance tax to pay, her entire £325,000 allowance would pass across to him too. So now when he dies, he has a £650,000 allowance. The same also applies to any unused portion of the £125,000 property allowance (which reduces

tax left to children on sale of a house).

that. So a will is crucial.

While savings and investments kept inside tax-free ISAs are liable for inheritance tax, the ISA allowance itself can be passed on to a spouse. So if they’ve £30,000 in ISAs you get this on top of your own ISAs.

For those who are married, laws known as intestacy rules do give some protection, though exactly how it works depends on which part of the UK you live in. Even so making a will so you can decide exactly where your assets will go is by far the best protection. And it needn’t be that costly, sometimes it’s even free, for full help see www. mse.me/cheapwills.

6. Die will-less and your unmarried partner may get nowt.

7. You can boost your savings interest or capital gains allowance.

If you’re not married, share a home with your partner, and don’t have a will - even if you’ve been together thirty years and have 17 kids - if you die, that means nothing. Depending on how the home ownership is structured they could even lose

Savings and investments can be freely moved between spouses – without any risk of later inheritance tax, or capital gains tax.

5. You can inherit your spouse’s ISA allowance.

Of course these days with the personal savings allowance letting

basic-rate taxpayers earn up to £1,000 interest a year without tax, most people don’t pay tax on their savings any more. Yet if you do, then moving savings to use up the other’s allowance, or to the one with the lower tax rate, makes sense. Plus if you’re selling something (like shares) which will attract capital gains tax, you get an annual allowance of £11,700 profit taxfree. If you’ll go over this, you can pass some of the asset to your spouse first, to use up both your allowances Martin Lewis is the Founder and Chair of MoneySavingExpert. com. Cyclists raise funds for Trinity

A

group of cyclists have helped to raise £10,000 for Trinity Hospice by taking part in a sponsored bike ride from Manchester to Blackpool. On Sun 8th July nearly 40 riders supporting the Bispham based hospice completed the 60 mile cycle on Sunday in extremely hot and humid conditions, with the first Trinity rider back after just three hours and 50 minutes. Among the cyclists was Trinity’s HR Manager David Warburton who is training for the charity’s London to Paris Bike Ride which sets off in September. David said ‘It was a tough ride in such heat, but the atmosphere was amazing and really kept you going. It was wonderful to see so many people taking part just for Trinity, knowing how much of a

difference they were making for our patients and their loved ones. There is still a long way to go in my training before the cycle from London to Paris later in the year, but if Sunday is anything to go by it’s going to be a very challenging but fulfilling experience.’ Cyclists taking part at the weekend raised sponsorship which will go towards providing Trinity care at the hospice, the hospital and in the community. Trinity’s Events Assistant Antonia Hawkins said ‘We know this year was a tough ride for our cyclists in such warm conditions. They all did so well to complete the route, and to raise so much in sponsorship. Every penny raised will go directly to proving outstanding palliative care to all who need it on the Fylde coast. www.trinityhospice.co.uk

ehearsals are under way for ‘The Pirates of Penzance’ on at the Lowther Pavilion October 16th - 20th. Marton Operatic are proud to be helping to support the RNLI. A swashbuckling comedy for children and adults alike. Come along – dressed as a pirate if you wish – and join them on the rocky Cornwall seashore to meet the famous Pirates of Penzance. The Story follows Frederic, who has served his apprenticeship with the Pirates and his duty is done – for he is the Slave of Duty. Now free from the Pirates (it seems) he will live a blameless life and atone for his Piracy by turning the Pirates over to the police. Thanks to Gilbert’s crazy plot, it all turns out quite differently with the help of a modern Major-General, his incredibly large bevy of daughters and a police force who are even more hopeless at their task than the Pirates. Needless to say, the story ends happily. Memorable songs for rollicking Pirates and plodding Police, soaring love ballads and catchy choruses

all play us through this classic Gilbert & Sullivan mixture of absurdity and beauty. It’s delightful entertainment for all ages. The show runs from Tue 16th to Sat 20th October at Lowther Pavillion, Lytham St Annes. Admission £14, children and students £5.
