Caring for your pet cats, especially males. Often, cats with FIV show no symptoms for some time, and when they do the symptoms are often fairly non-specific. These can include diarrhoea, sneezing, skin and eye infections, weight loss, lethargy, and reduced appetite. Swollen glands can also be a symptom. The best way to protect your cat from FIV is to get them neutered. This will help reduce their urge to roam and fight, decreasing the risk of your cat being bitten by an infected cat.’

Neuter cats to help protect them against FIV

V

et charity PDSA is calling for more cat owners to take preventive action and get their pets neutered to protect them from Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is a cat-specific virus similar to the HIV virus. FIV is spread via cat bites, most commonly seen in unneutered cats, which sadly has no cure. The vet charity has revealed that nearly one million cats in the UK are not neutered – meaning they are at greater risk of contracting the deadly disease. Many owners remain unaware of FIV, which can lead to the breakdown of a cat’s immune system. Cats with FIV can live

for long periods where they appear healthy and show no signs of illness, but in the later stages of the disease their immune system begins to struggle and sadly, if they start to suffer they may need to be euthanised. With no vaccine available in the UK, neutering cats is the best way to protect them as it reduces the chances of them roaming and coming into conflict with each other. PDSA Vet Olivia AndersonNathan says ‘FIV positive cats do not pose any risk to humans or pets of other species, and the disease is spread through cat bites, a territorial behaviour most commonly seen in non-neutered

If a cat is diagnosed with FIV it is important for owners to take steps to protect their pet and prevent the risk of them spreading the disease to other cats. Olivia adds ‘FIV-infected cats need special treatment once they’re diagnosed to protect both them and other cats. Infected cats need to be kept indoors to prevent spreading the infection. Contact with other cats, as long as they don’t fight, can be safe – research shows that within stable multi-cat households where there is no fighting, the chance of an FIV positive cat infecting another cat is incredibly low. However introducing any new cats can upset the stability and lead to fighting so isn’t recommended. As a precaution, infected cats can be fed from a different food bowl to reduce the chance of any saliva coming into contact with healthy cats, and hunting or raw diets should be avoided for infected cats as both put them at higher risk of infections without a healthy immune system. A good quality diet, routine preventive care such as vaccinations and flea control, as well as rapid treatment of any other problems will help them lead a relatively normal life.’ She added ‘If you are concerned your cat may have contracted the virus, call your vet for advice. Certain blood tests can help to determine if your cat has become infected, and although incurable, and if FIV is confirmed your vet will be able to recommend ways to manage the condition.’

D

o you get excited about lots of new goals and ideas, only to abandon them before they reach completion? Procrastination can be the death knell of many projects that could have seen success, if only… What skills do we need to avoid failure to finish? Too much choice makes it harder for us to decide, it’s called ‘the paradox of choice’. Think of the those endless trips around the supermarket isles. The more types of something you see, the harder it gets to decide. Whilst you can buy two kinds of bread just in case, it is not quite possible when it comes to a washing machine or a sofa. Before you know it, the excitement turns into a chore as you endlessly research the subject, learning about different types of the product you want, and soon you feel as if you were doing a degree course. Then you realise that life is too short to spend hours researching washing machines or types of sofa, and you abandon project. Task status: incomplete. Feeling: failure.

Don’t bother with Procrastination

Some ideas are meant to stay just that, ideas A lot of what we think up is not that great. Even Thomas Edison knew it, and he invented the lightbulb, but not before a lot of trial and error. So do what he did, don’t beat yourself up by calling it failure, just inventing 10,000 ways that don’t work. Then let go of them and move on.

justified. But other decisions do not warrant a lengthy investigation. If you are indecisive about which fitness class to join, think about the bigger picture: does it really matter what exercise you do, as long as you do it? Surely some exercise is better than none? If your instinct is telling you to just get on with it, trust it. So often the first thought on the subject is correct, the rest is procrastination.

It is okay to trust your gut feeling sometimes Some decisions are too important to simply flip a coin. From medical treatment to what house to buy or what school to choose for the children, you have to pick wisely as you will have to live with your choice, so lots of research is

Prioritise Do the important tasks first. The sort of decisions that have the biggest impact should come first. So bite the bullet, call that important client first and get the big task done. Then you can deal with the hundreds of emails cluttering your inbox. Consider how writing

24

one difficult letter can take an hour but so does deleting and replying to many emails. Ask yourself which task is weighing heavily on your mind. Then do that task first, and the rest will go quickly. Create a deadline You are probably already familiar with the problem described as work stretching into the time slot available. In other words, the more time you have, the longer you will take to complete a task. The solution is to break up your to-do list into smaller, more manageable tasks and put a deadline on each. Don’t start working until you’ve made a list with deadlines. Then keep ticking the items off and feel good about it.

School receives communication friendly status

A

Blackpool school which teaches children outside of mainstream education has been recognised for the work its staff does to build their communication skills. The school named 'Educational Diversity' has been awarded communication friendly status by the speech and language training company Elklan. The school is the first secondary Pupil Referral Unit to have achieved this excellent award across the country. The prestigious ELKLAN Communication Friendly Setting (CFS) status is awarded to schools that have trained and supported all their staff in communication and language development. Schools are also required to show evidence of putting this knowledge into practice and through the implementation of a Communication Policy. The CFS enables staff to develop an increased understanding and support of students with speech, language and communication needs. Wendy Casson, Headteacher at Educational Diversity, said 'We are delighted to have achieved this award as it recognises our commitment in gaining a

better understanding of how speech, language and communication needs can impact negatively on a young person’s ability to learn. A young person may present with some behaviours when we first start working with them that often mask an unmet need in this area.' Cllr Kathryn Benson, Cabinet Member for Schools and Learning at Blackpool Council, said 'This is great news and a fantastic example of how hard all the staff at this school work to make a positive difference to so many young people’s lives.'

They have a walkietalkie system which means we can all talk to each other while riding the over 800 miles. We also feel safer as the lights & indicators increase our visibility out on the road.' The Livall range of smart helmets include: • Bright LED lights so you are easier to see • Indicator lights to alert traffic of your road direction to improve your visibility 30

Equity Release has become mainstream - what’s changed?

W

ith the value of cash being released from homes passing £3bn a year for the first time, equity release has cemented its place in the mainstream of financial planning. These plans – which let you take withdrawals from properties – have been regulated since 2004. Financial advisers, who must be consulted before entering an equity release arrangement, but the booming housing market over the past decade coupled with falling interest rates and inheritance tax perks have opened up the market to the middle classes. The number of £500,000plus properties used for equity release has risen sharply in recent years.

sale of the property, normally on death. Interest rates apply for the entirety of the loan, and remortgaging is rare, so even a small increase in rates can have an enormous effect in the final loan size.

The average sum withdrawn is now around £75,000.

As with conventional mortgages and savings accounts, interest rates have fallen steadily over the past few years.

Most providers are members of the Equity Release Council, a condition of which is to offer a “no negative equity” guarantee. This has also helped ease concern for those who remember “home income” plans sold in the Eighties and Nineties, where variable interest rates and little protection against sudden falls in house prices left elderly customers exposed.

New options: guard against inheritance tax or dodge early repayment charges Equity release providers have added a growing list of features to their products as the market has developed. More firms now offer the ability to keep loan sizes under control by allowing regular or ad-hoc payments, just as you might when overpaying a conventional mortgage. Where this option is chosen, lenders will allow borrowers to convert to roll-up if they can no longer afford repayments.

What’s changed? In 2017 a record £3.06bn was extracted from properties, according to the Equity Release Council. That represents a £909m rise on 2016’s total, and a trebling in the total amount lent over the past four years. Typically, borrowers allow equity release loans to “roll up”, meaning interest is added to the loan which is paid off on the

LINK-Mag Entertainment by Ann Montini Will Ciaran McCarthy return to Coronation Street?

I would love to if it were possible, but it’s down to the writers and what they can create for him. It was wonderful to be part of the show, and I never would say never to going back.

You also appeared as a regular in Mrs Brown’s Boys – that must have been a riot.

I was in the movie too Ann don’t forget that, but yes what a comedy genius that man is, and its loved all over the world. It's funny too, and I mean funny never goes out of style now does it really.

Would you ever like to be a reality TV judge?

One more time Boyzone finally say “Thank you and Goodnight” with new album and tour – Keith Duffy tells Ann all about the “final” goodbye New album 'Thank you and Good Night' is it goodbye though?

It is really, I mean we all decided it and felt the time was right, but we plan to go out with a bang and we have recorded some new tracks too, so I think the fans will be very happy.

Have you enjoyed the pop star fame?

Totally, but of course when I started out I was young and single, so things do change, and we never thought we would be going this long, but it’s the fans that put us here without a doubt. I hear Strictly Come Dancing would love you on the show Well I love the show, and as yet I have received no call, but it’s the one big show we all sit down to watch and, you know Ann, I do have some nifty moves on the dancefloor.

What is your favourite Boyzone track you love performing?

I think it changes but, I know we all love 'Picture of You' as that was used for the Mr Bean film which we all loved also, so I figure that would be a safe bet for sure. 36

I don’t like the idea of it as such, unless the show had a positive spin. It's simply because when we all started out, there is no way we would have got on, you need time to grow and become an artiste, I'm not one for shattering dreams really.

What is the most expensive thing you have ever bought?

That is easy, cars Ann. I have been lucky enough to own Porsches, Ferraris, and BMWs. The most expensive was probably a black BMW M5 I bought for £200,000 in the early 2000s. That is a ridiculous amount of money to spend on a car, and I would never do it again. But you live and learn. Tell me about Boyzlife I started up Boyzlife with Brian McFadden of Westlife two years ago, we have been on the road non-stop performing it’s a great night out, lots of laughs, and fun plus songs that people love – we are all about making people have a great time. just like Boyzone do

LINK-Mag Motoring

Suzuki Swift Sport by Rob Auchterlonie

C

hampion Yellow body colour gives the new Suzuki Swift Sport the distinct appearance of a motoring high-viz jacket.

It’s the metal equivalent of the sort of apparel a top athlete might use when training, which is quite appropriate really, because it’s a great little runner. Suzuki’s third generation sport supermini has a new front end that gives it a look all of its own. It adopts Suzuki’s lightweight platform strategy and has a kerb weight of just 975kgs – that’s 70 less than the model it replaces, or one small adult to you and me. It’s maybe a bit evident in the over-light feel of the doors but its HEARTECT platform is a very firm and rigid base on which to build a small car . It ticks all the boxes on the safety front so no need to fret there.

standard with the sort of agile handling that has had MINI owners drooling for years, and it’s got a high revving engine that is every bit as good in 1.4 litre form than the Oxford built tottymobile. Power under the bonnet comes from a 140ps 1.4 litre four cylinder Boosterjet turbo engine that gives the impression it will rev for ever as you work your way through the six speed gearbox, which gives you the opportunity to appreciate in the sweet resonant note coming from the two tailpipes, particularly on downshifts. Yes, it appears to have the lot to make it a serious rival. But there is one glaring omission – suspension. Or any meaningful suspension travel to talk about.

Here’s another one to mull over in the bar at your local. The Swift Sport surely has to be the Land of the Rising Sun’s attempt at mimicking the good old Mini Cooper.

If you don’t want a car with a firm ride, then look elsewhere in the Swift range, as there are a few to choose from that will be considerably more compliant. And which won’t suffer from quite so much road noise drumming through the cabin.

Chariots of the gods Blackpool's new £300 million visitor attraction

P

lans for the biggest single investment in Blackpool’s tourism industry for more than a century were revealed at the end of November.

The £300m Blackpool Central development will bring world-class visitor attractions to a landmark site on the famous Golden Mile along with new hotels, restaurants, food market, event square, residential apartments and multi-storey parking. The masterplan for the long-awaited redevelopment is inspired by 'Chariots Of The Gods', a global publishing phenomenon, written by Swiss author Erich Von Däniken, that explores alien encounters and unsolved mysteries of ancient civilisations. Chariots Of The Gods will be the main theme for Blackpool Central including the anchor attraction - the UK’s first 'flying theatre', a fully-immersive thrill ride that will create the incredible sensation of human flight. It is estimated that the development will attract 600,000 additional visitors a year with a combined annual spend of £75m. It will also create around 1,000 new jobs. Leader of Blackpool Council, Cllr Simon Blackburn, described the Blackpool Central project as a potential 'game changer', creating a unique, firstclass leisure destination in the heart of the resort. The Blackpool Central project name relates back to the days when the site housed the resort’s main railway station. At its peak, Blackpool Central Station was the busiest in the world. The 17-acre development site, which currently includes one of Blackpool’s biggest surface car parks alongside the magistrates’ court

40

building and the former police station, was once earmarked as the site of a Vegas-style super-casino. The project is a collaboration between UK-based development company, Nikal Ltd, and Media Invest Entertainment, which owns the intellectual property rights to 'Chariots Of The Gods'. Blackpool Council is working closely with both parties to help unlock the development opportunity which is currently envisaged to be delivered in several phases over an eight to nineyear period, with work starting as early as 2020.

The first major phase of the project will incorporate several key components including: Enabling Work: This will provide a new multi-storey car park with more than 1000 spaces replacing the existing open air car park as well as new coach-drop off facilities. The UK’s first Flying Theatre: An extraordinary attraction that will provide an unparalleled flying sensation. The indoor theatre will be fully immersive with on-board special effects including wind, fog, water and scents, with state-of-the-art projection and surround sound. Virtual Reality Experience: The most advanced VR experience on an epic scale with free-roam, multiplayer capability, body tracking, and motion simulators for unmatched realism in game-play. Greatest Mysteries: The world’s first multimedia exhibition of its type exploring extra-terrestrial

influences on the great ancient civilisations. A fullyimmersive educational and entertaining experience created with leading-edge technology. Adventure Land: Expansive indoor family entertainment centre incorporating a series of physical and mental challenges including free-fall hang gliding, rope courses, adventure trails and interactive climbing walls. Thrill & Gaming Zone: Fully-themed gaming zone, with thrill and family rides, arcade games, laser tag arena, bounce park and bumper cars. Alien Diner: Themed bar and event restaurant concept with 'roller coaster' service, hourly special effects shows and exploration tours. This first phase, due to open in Spring 2024, will be complemented by the development of an Artisan Food Hall accommodating up to 30 outlets and an event square incorporating a stage and video wall which will be used to host themed markets, open-air concerts and events. A new 150-bedroom promenade hotel is also planned. Phase Two will include apartments, further food and drink outlets, a second hotel comprising 250 bedrooms, with additional landscaped public open space. Future phases to the southern end of the site will include further leisure attractions, residential apartments and a music venue and nightclub. Cllr Blackburn said'I am delighted to be able to announce this hugely significant milestone in the redevelopment of the Central Station site. This really is a once-in-a-generation opportunity that has the potential to alter the face of our town. Over more than fifty years, many ideas for this site have come and gone. The difference this time is that we have worked very hard with our fantastic partners at Nikal and MIE for almost two years to create a scheme that is not just aspirational, but highly deliverable. These new attractions are of ground-breaking international quality and their cutting edge technology will take Blackpool’s tourism offer to another level.' He added 'We already have, to my mind, the best amusement park in the UK, in the form of Blackpool Pleasure Beach. These new attractions will allow thrill-seekers to enjoy their visit even more, they will attract new visitors, and encourage existing visitors to stay longer. They will create jobs, regenerate a part of the town that is in need of love and attention, and boost trade. This new development, alongside the other investments taking place in the town, represent a game-changer for our visitor economy. We have long stated that a key objective is to create a year-round destination that delivers year-round employment. Blackpool Central will play a major part in that ambition.' Nick Payne, Managing Director of Nikal, said 'Blackpool Central is a hugely important project for the town as well as the region and it is an honour to be on

board. Place-making and regeneration are the DNA of our business and we thrive on creating dynamic new spaces that inspire, excite and engage. It’s taken almost two years and a lot of hard work to get to this point. We know that the masterplan fully maximises the site’s potential and will deliver a unique and groundbreaking, entertainment destination with global appeal that will revitalise and underpin Blackpool’s growth and regeneration.' Norbert Reichart, CEO of Media Invest Entertainment, said 'The unique theme of "Chariots Of The Gods" will merge entertainment, culture, and history – an enthralling ‘Edutainment’ experience for the whole family – that can be enjoyed all year round. Together with some of the best companies in the industry, we have developed a one-of-a-kind, exciting indoor entertainment concept with truly world-class attractions which will integrate perfectly into Blackpool's pre-existing leisure cluster. This well-balanced mix of top attractions for all ages will significantly enhance Blackpool’s reputation as one of the UK’s top entertainment destinations.' Kate Shane, Head of Blackpool Cluster for Merlin Entertainments, said 'We welcome any scale investment that drives further visitation to Blackpool and helps generate greater economic activity for the resort. It’s good too that we have a clear, wellsupported plan for this area. The vision is an exciting prospect and we look forward to working with Nikal and Media Invest Entertainment to incorporate our Madame Tussauds and SEA LIFE Centre in the new development.'
