Doorstep photo diaries capture life in lockdown

ver the last few months doorstep photos have provided some of the enduring images of family life during lockdown.
Families, couples and housemates are having socially-distant photographs taken at their front doors in an effort to record these unusual times. Among those following the trend to create snapshots of modern life is local photographer Jessica Isherwood, who has shot up to 110 of these so far. Jessica is one of Lancashire's Family and Wedding photographers and she decided to use her time to document life through a lens from a safe distance (of course) by offering doorstep photographs. 20

Biography I got into photography when I first bought my own DSLR camera when I was 12 years old. A strange thing to want when you're 12, but I had always wanted a big camera like you see all the paparazzi have. Around 10 years later, I'm still enjoying photography as much as I did then. I have graduated from a Higher National Diploma in Photography and since finishing I have taken on many different photograph ventures. I specialise in weddings and lifestyle portraits and love taking natural photographs, capturing what I can see rather than staging the photos. Whether it be a lifestyle shoot photographing you dancing through the woods in the rain, documenting your special wedding day, or maybe capturing your new born baby at home. Classic Victoria sandwich cake which is beautifully moist and simply delicious!
Ingredients For the sponge 225g Butter 225g Caster sugar 4 Eggs (medium) 225g Self-raising white flour (sieved) 1 tsp Baking powder
For the filling 4-5 tbsp Strawberry jam For the icing 225g Icing sugar 100g Butter 2 tbsp Milk
Strawberrries to decorate
Method Place all of the sponge ingredients in a mixing bowl and beat with a wooden spoon until well mixed, for 2-3 minutes. Place in 2 greased and bottom-lined 20cm (8 inch) sandwich tins. Bake in centre of pre-heated oven 180° C (160 °C fan, gas mark 4) for 30-35 minutes. Turn out, remove paper and cool. Sandwich with jam and place icing ingredients in bowl and mix until smooth. Use to fill the cake. Dust the cake with icing sugar then add strawberries to decorate.

The Thinking Person’s Fishing
P
eople have been fishing for food, so to speak, or to relax, or both. The peaceful experience of the outdoors, whether solitary or in a group, provides an important element of balance to our stressful lives - the calming, almost meditative effect of this recreational sport is an excellent antidote to the stresses of the overtaxed urban mind. Study after study indicates that anglers enjoy the experience of catching the fish, whether the fish ends up on the dinner table or not. Angling is fun, challenging and seriously addictive, and apart from being a competitive sport, angling is also an adventure.
What is angling?
While angling is the main method of sport fishing, it is also used by commercial fisheries. In a nutshell, to catch the fish, anglers use an angle – a fish hook attached to a fishing line which is stored and retrieved by a fishing reel. A lure or a bait is attached to the hook, often with a bite indicator such as a float. A weight or sinker are sometimes used as well.
Coarse versus game
In the UK the term coarse fish describes freshwater fish that is different from game fish. Fishing for freshwater game fish such as salmon and trout used to be the domain of the gentry who referred to it as game fish – it was based on the view that other fish was not delicate enough to eat, and those species were labelled as coarse fish, partly due to their larger scales. There is no taxonomical basis for this distinction, but coarse fish tend to live in warmer and stiller waters. While freshwater game fish is usually caught using a technique called fly fishing, often practised in the United States, coarse fishing angling techniques are especially popular in the United Kingdom, mainland Europe, and in some former British Commonwealth countries.
To keep or not to keep?
Although anglers and recreational fishermen often keep their catch for consumption, they increasingly practise what’s called catch and release fishing – releasing the fish ensures their survival and prevents unintended depletion of their population. The thinking behind this is based on the belief that larger fish have a greater breeding potential. Some fisheries allow smaller and larger fish to be taken but the medium-sized catch have to be released. 24
Such management is believed to help the fishery create a number of large, trophy-sized fish. Smaller fisheries can be heavily fished so catch and release can be the only way to ensure that the right sized fish remains available each year.
Rules and regulations
In many parts of the world size limits apply to certain species so in order to comply with the law, fish above or below that size must be released. Angling, the competitive sport
Angling can be seriously competitive. Anglers compete in fishing tournaments for prizes based on the size or weight of their catch, usually within a specified time and fish species. On large competitive circuits professional anglers are commercially backed by endorsements! However, professional anglers do not fish commercially although they accept a financial award. Amateurs can engage in competitive fishing in their local fishing derbies – the difference is that while derbies usually require the fish to be killed, tournaments deduct points if fish cannot be released alive. And in case you wonder, women go fishing too!

Annual Switch-On celebration goes virtual for 2020

lackpool’s annual Illuminations display is to be extended by two months to provide an invaluable boost to the resort’s tourism season.
VisitBlackpool has also revealed that the traditional Switch-On concert will be replaced this year by a free-to-access streamed event in association with MTV. The annual Switch-On concert was scheduled to take place on the night of Friday 4 September on the Tower Festival Headland in front of a 20,000 capacity audience. However, the social distancing restrictions arising from COVID-19 means it cannot go ahead in its usual format.

The streamed hour-long concert, which will feature a mixture of exclusive pre-recorded, at-home performances, as well as live performances at a closed event, filmed inside the Blackpool Tower Ballroom, acting as the curtainraiser for the extended Blackpool Illuminations season, which will now run from September 4 to January 3, 2021. It will be hosted by Diversity’s Ashley and Jordan Banjo, and will feature a star-studded line-up of talent, leading up to the allimportant Switch-On moment.
