LINK-MAG Gardening

s container plants begin to flourish and hanging baskets start to look their best, it’s the watering that’s the hassle. It’s the most timeconsuming chore of summer, especially if you have loads of pots. Many of us use drought-tolerant plants such as geraniums, agapanthus, alliums, phormiums, euphorbias, hebes, verbascum and nepeta to ease the burden of watering, and most established shrubs and perennials need less watering because their roots go deep enough to find moisture. If you don’t want to be limited in the plants you choose, you can install automatic irrigation systems. Choose a system which has a supply pipe that carries the water around the garden, and micro-tubing that can be fitted with individual nozzles which drip water at an even rate. Starter kits are available for self-assembly, and you can add extra pipes and nozzles later to extend the system. Connect the system to an outside tap and turn it on and off by hand, or add a timing device to do it automatically. The busy gardener should focus only on plants that need watering: those in containers; and newlyplanted specimens in borders, which will need to be kept moist until they are established. Don’t get the hosepipe out to your borders in full sun on a hot day as lightly spraying the surface does no good at all, and in any case very few areas of the garden need watering daily. Some vegetables will also need regular watering as they develop. Peas and beans should be watered frequently when the pods start to swell, while tomatoes and courgettes are also thirsty plants and need plenty of water as the fruit develops. With tomatoes, don’t go days without watering and then drench them. If you do, 16

Time-saving watering tips By Hannah Stephenson

the base of the fruit is likely to split or the tomatoes may develop blossomend rot - a dry, hard brownish coat at the base of the fruit which will ruin them. Leafy crops such as lettuce are less likely to bolt if they are kept moist, while tubers, such as potatoes, will need water throughout the growing season. Light watering is not the answer for most plants, as it just wets the surface of the soil - which encourages shallow rooting - and also evaporates more quickly. In hot weather, water in early morning or evening to reduce evaporation, and try to keep it around the base of the stem. Aim water at the roots of trees by inserting a section of drainpipe filled with gravel next to the tree, and then pouring water down that - it should go directly where it’s needed. Make a ridge of soil around shrubs which will hold the water in place as it soaks in. For plants in rows or smaller plants, install a seep hose. Alternatively, sink a plastic flower pot into the ground next to a plant which is likely to need watering and fill it up, which directs the water under the surface to the rooting zone of the plant. On the patio, you can buy equipment which will save time on watering by hand. Line porous containers with polythene before planting, but don’t cover the drainage holes. There are also self-watering containers with a reservoir built into the base and a wick connecting the reservoir to the compost. Stand summer pots on pot saucers so at least some of the water which has drained out will remain at the base and hopefully still seep up into the soil. A few easy changes to your watering habits should mean you can still enjoy your garden without having the hose out all the time.

LINK-Mag Recipe

Summer eating Barbecued corn on the cob with shallot herb butter Super easy side dish making the most of summer sweetcorn, with a useful make ahead flavoured butter. This butter also works well with baked or new potatoes, or on top of a barbecued steak. Preparation Time: 10 minutes Cooking Time: 15-20 minutes Ingredients: 100g butter, softened 2 shallots, finely grated 20g fresh herbs - a mix of parsley, chives, with just a little rosemary. salt and freshly ground black pepper 6 corn on the cob Method: Add the soft butter to a bowl (if it’s too hard, 20 seconds in the microwave should soften it just enough). Stir through the grated shallot and herbs

and season well with salt and pepper. If you are making the butter ahead to use later then place it onto a sheet of clingfilm. Roll into a sausage shape then chill in the fridge. When you are ready to cook the corn take a little of this butter, a scant teaspoon, and rub all over a head of corn using clean hands. Repeat with the remaining corn. Reserve the rest of the butter for after cooking. Lay the buttered corn on the grill bars of the barbecue and cook for about 15 minutes, turning frequently, until they are lightly charred in places and the corn is tender. Serve immediately with the rest of the butter dotted on top.

ne of the UK’s best-loved pop bands, Busted, are heading to Blackpool for a dazzling Blackpool Illuminations Switch-On concert. Brit Award-winners Busted will be joined by the multi-talented singer-songwriter Nina Nesbitt, and Sigma, the British drum and bass DJ and record production duo who have twice topped the UK singles charts. Britain’s top dance group, Diversity, and Club MTV DJs R3wire & Varski will also join the line-up at Blackpool’s Tower Festival Headland on Friday 30 August for what promises to be the most spectacular free event of the year! Formed in 2000, Busted were one of the biggest pop success stories of a generation. They have since sold more than five million records and have just completed a huge arena tour, thrilling their army of fans with a high-energy show featuring hits such as the iconic Year 3000, Crashed the Wedding, Sleeping With the Light On and You Said No. The tour coincided with the release of their brand new studio album, Half Way There. A VisitBlackpool spokesperson said 'We are delighted to be able to welcome one of the great names in British pop to the SwitchOn stage. With so much talent already confirmed, it promises to be another night to remember.' Scotland’s Nina Nesbitt is a hugely talented singer, songwriter and musician. As a songwriter she has written for various artists including Jessie Ware, Olivia Holt and The Shires. As a singer she has found success in her own right and has just released her second studio album. Nina said 'I can’t wait to play the Illuminations Switch-On concert this summer! I went to Blackpool as a kid, so I'm excited to return!' Sigma, comprising Cam Edwards and Joe Lenzie, topped the UK singles chart with Nobody To Love and followed that success with another number one hit, Changing, featuring Paloma Faith. Diversity will return to the Switch-On stage to perform yet another scintillating routine just weeks before they embark on their massive UK tour to celebrate their 10th anniversary. Also returning are crowd favourites R3wire and Varski, the Club MTV DJs and record producers who have helped turn Blackpool Illuminations Switch-On night into the coolest party in town. The Friday night celebration will start with a 'Blackpool Introduces' showcase featuring the best of talent from across the Fylde Coast, prior to the start of the main show, the Switch-On itself, and then an hour-long party under the Lights. More artists, including the celebrity who will pull the switch to launch the 2019 Illuminations season will be unveiled in the weeks ahead. As last year, the Switch-On event will be free for the lucky winners of the 20,000 wristbands that will give entry to the Tower Festival Headland arena. Allocation is restricted to four wristbands per household. The ballot closes at midday on Monday 29th July. To register, go to: www.visitblackpool. com/switchon

Plastic Beach

T

he St Annes North LOVEmyBEACH BeachCare group have collected an astonishing two tonnes of litter from the coast in one year. This is the equivalent of a new-born blue whale, an adult great white shark or large car.On Thursday 2nd May, the group weighed the rubbish they found on the beach, which they have done each week when they meet every Thursday. Each volunteer ends the beach clean with a huge bag of litter that has washed up on the beach or been left there by visitors. This week was a momentous occasion as they reached the two-tonne mark, but is also a stark reminder that our behaviour has a huge impact on our beaches and seas. Michael Pearson, the Group Leader for St Annes North BeachCare group said ‘The volunteers have collected over 2000kg of litter from the beach and sand dunes since 4th April 2018. On 2nd May they collected 30kg and reached 2021kg. On some beach cleans they can collect up to 100kg in just 2 hours.’ Emily Parr, Fylde’s LOVEmyBEACH Officer commented ‘It is an incredible achievement for the St Annes North BeachCare group that in just one year they have collected over 2000kg of litter. It demonstrates how dedicated the volunteers are in ensuring St Annes beach is a safe and clean beach for residents, visitors and wildlife to enjoy.’ Emily continued ‘However, it is also quite shocking to hear that amount of litter has been on the beach in the first place. It is a strong reminder to everyone 22

to ensure their behaviours are not contributing to this beach litter. If everyone can take all their litter home from the beach, pick up after their dog and only flush the 3Ps (pee, poop and paper), hopefully next year there won’t be 2000kg of litter on the beach that needs collecting.’ The most common items they find are: • The usual culprits - plastic wrappers, wet wipes, cotton bud sticks, drinks bottles, cigarette butts, plastic fragments which have broken off larger items etc • Fishing lines • Disposable barbeques, food packaging, bottles and cans that have been left in the dunes after a picnic or party • Dog poo (even bagged), which dog owners and dog walkers have left behind on the beach. • Over summer they collected over 100 plastic beach toys that had been left behind and these have been cleaned and will be reused by children this summer. The most unusual item they have found over the last year is a blow up female doll. Volunteer Dave Gorman said ‘If you think about the amount we’ve collected here over the year and multiply that by the number of groups along the coast and up and down the country, it must be a phenomenal amount of litter.’ The St Annes group meet every Thursday at 10am in North Beach Car Park, St Annes and are out rain or shine. They clean the beach for two hours and new volunteers are very welcome. Details of this and other beach cleans across the North West can be found on the LOVEmyBEACH website: www.lovemybeach.org

Caring for your pet

J

ust like people, pets can suffer from allergies too. While it’s easy for us to spot our symptoms, how do we know when our pets have an allergy and what might cause it? Signs your pet may have an allergy include itchy or sore skin especially around the ears, paws and armpits, usually coupled with frequent licking in these areas. Occasionally pets may show other signs like runny eyes. Unlike in humans, runny noses and sneezing aren’t common signs of allergies in pets. Almost anything that a pet comes into contact with has the potential to cause an allergic reaction. PDSA vet Olivia Anderson Nathan said ‘Fleas are actually the most common trigger of allergic skin reactions. For some pets they can trigger a condition called ‘flea allergic dermatitis’ (FAD), a reaction to flea saliva which can drive our four-legged friends mad through severe itching and cause their skin to become sore.’ The key to treating FAD is to prevent flea bites by getting rid of every single flea and making sure your pet has ongoing protection against them. Speak to your vet for advice on the best flea treatment for your pet and how often to use it. Your home, bedding and other pets might also need to be treated if fleas have got into your home, which can easily happen if one of your pets has picked them up. Flea treatments meant for dogs should never be used on cats because they contain an ingredient that can be fatal to felines. Another common trigger for itchy skin at this time of year is pollen. Olivia added ‘If your dog gets itchy feet, rinse their paws after every walk with lukewarm water or a special medicated shampoo to wash away allergens. Regular bathing with medicated shampoo and feeding supplements to support the skin barrier can help too.’ Food is another common cause of allergies and can lead to skin problems and tummy upsets. Finding which food is the cause of the allergy can be tricky though. It can be any food that a pet has come into contact with before, for example beef, chicken or wheat. Olivia said ‘It’s unfortunately not as simple as just switching to a different flavour if you

Pets and Pollen How to help protect your pets from allergies

suspect a food allergy in your pet. Like with human nut allergy sufferers, even a small amount of an allergen on a production line could set off a food allergy even if it’s not a listed ingredient. If your vet suspects your pet is suffering from a food allergy, they’ll put them on a special prescription diet which shouldn’t trigger your dog’s allergies. All other food is strictly off the menu and, if an allergy is to blame, the symptoms should start to subside after a few months. Other foods could then be re-introduced slowly – usually one a week, to help identify the food triggering the reaction. Lots of different things can cause your pet’s allergy so it’s worth getting advice from your vet to try and narrow down possible causes. Sometimes, we never find out the exact cause but there are lots of ways we can combat skin allergies, from special diets to medications to supplements to shampoos. Depending on the allergy, some pets might need treatment for the rest of their life, along with regular check-ups from their vet.’ PDSA is on a mission to educate the nation on pet wellbeing and is delighted that funding from players of People’s Postcode Lottery is helping the charity to continue this vital work.
