T

he 2019 Blackpool Destination Guide showcasing the myriad of attractions in the resort is now available.

The free 84-page guide puts special focus on the 125th anniversary celebrations of two of the resort’s most iconic heritage assets – The Blackpool Tower and The Grand Theatre. To mark these historic milestones, the cover of the guide features an extraordinary photograph taken inside the world-famous Tower Ballroom when a giant replica moon was suspended above the celebrated ballroom floor. The publication includes details of all of Blackpool’s major attractions and events, including Armed Forces Week (June 24-30); Blackpool Air Show (August 10 and 11); Ride The Lights (August 27); Blackpool Illuminations Switch-On (August 30); World Fireworks (September 6, 13, 20 and 27); and Nickelodeon SLIMEFEST (October 19, 20 and 21). It also features information on a wide selection of hotels and accommodation, restaurants and night-time attractions, and an expansive programme of shows and live entertainment, as well as tips on how visitors can get the best of all that Blackpool has to offer. There is also useful information on transport links, accessibility and the Blackpool Resort Pass which gives heavily discounted access to the resort’s major attractions. 10

New inclusions for 2019 are: • The opening of The Boulevard, a stylish new seafront hotel, bar and restaurant at Blackpool Pleasure Beach • A brand new Dr Who exhibition at Madame Tussauds with a remarkably lifelike figure of Jodie Whittaker as the programme’s first ever woman doctor • New shows and festivals including Jason Manford’s Comedy Festival; American Idiot; Little Miss Sunshine; Motown The Musical; Kinky Boots and Dr Dolittle The Musical. Cllr Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, said 'The annual destination guide reflects the huge range of visitor attractions which make Blackpool such a compelling destination for familie. 2018 saw huge investment at Blackpool Pleasure Beach with its breath-taking ICON rollercoaster and at Blackpool Zoo with its new state-of-the-art elephant facility. 2019 sees even more to come. The new guide will visitors an opportunity to see for themselves how all of these changes have created a perfect blend of Blackpool’s marvellous heritage with a new generation of free and paid-for events and attractions to create the ultimate family resort. T

he Fylde Netball League announced at the start of the year that they raised £1800 as part of its charity efforts throughout 2018.

The Fylde netball league currently has over 50 teams and 350 women from the Blackpool and surrounding region playing in it, and in 2018, through various tournaments organised throughout the year, players raised a total of £1800 which has been divided equally between their three chosen charities; The Stroke Association, Parkinson’s UK and LHON Society. Hundreds of women from across the North West entered the netball tournaments and contributed prizes to the raffle and cake sales. Irene Rawcliffe, Chair of the Fylde Netball League, said 'The league has been running for 60 years now and we’re proud to say that over the last six decades we’ve done our best to try and give back to much deserving charities. 2018 was a momentous year for us in the number of women that have joined the league and who are now participating in sport, so we’re extremely happy to end the year on a high by supporting the charities and all the amazing work that they do.' Rebecca Owen, Regional Fundraiser at the Stroke Association, said 'Every year we help tens of thousands of stroke survivors and their families through our range of services and free helpline, but we can only do this through the generosity of people like Fylde Netball League and all the teams who took part in the tournament. We’re incredibly grateful to them for choosing to support the Stroke Association.' Sarah Green, the North West Regional Fundraiser for Parkinson’s UK, said 'I would like to say thank you to Irene and everyone at Fylde Netball League for choosing to support Parkinson’s UK with your tournaments. Our work supporting people with Parkinson’s and research to find better treatments and a cure for the condition, is completely dependent on donations. To put it simply, without the support of our amazing fundraisers, the work we do just wouldn’t be possible, and we’re very grateful for this support.' The Stroke Association is a charity in the UK that works to prevent stroke, and to support everyone touched by stroke, fund research, and campaign for the rights of stroke survivors of all ages.

They have recovering centres in Blackpool, Fylde & Wyre that provide high quality information, practical advice and emotional support following a stroke for survivors, carers and family members. Parkinson's UK is a Parkinson's research and support charity that aims are to improve the quality of life for people affected by Parkinson's and find a cure for the condition. The LHON Society is a patient-led support group for a rare condition called Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON). R

LINK-Mag Entertainment by Ann Montini

ussell Watson, has sold millions of records worldwide, and performed for some of the world’s greatest figures, including The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince, and the late Pope John Paul II. with ten studio albums under his belt, his success has been phenomenal. Now he is back this time with good friend Aled Jones and a new album titled ‘In Harmony’ Tell me more about your new album RW: Aled approached me to collaborate for his next big project and that was it, I was hooked, we have been mates for years, but our voices do blend well together, and we have a wonderful collection of classics, and new stuff too. Talent shows, are you a fan of them? Yes, and it’s how we find the next big thing, which inevitably we do at the end of the series. There are very few mediums on television where you can go and perform and be seen, so you do have to learn your craft

Who do you admire singing wise? Like so many, I admire the greats really, Sinatra, Ella, and of course Pavarotti. But I also think you should create your own sound and look, it’s good to admire, but of course you need to be original yourself You and Aled are also going on tour this year We are, from Blackpool Opera House to the London Palladium, which is wonderful. I do enjoy touring to be honest, but It will be a lot more fun now with the two of us together for sure

I hear Strictly Come Dancing would love you on the show It’s what I call an entertainment show for all the family, and yes, I would love to be on, but would I be any good? I am not that sure I would, but why not, I’d like to give it a go and see what happens.

lackpool’s bubbliest event is back for its third year as Bubble Rush returns to Lawsons Showground in April, raising money for Brian House Children’s Hospice. Bubble Rush is a 5km course which can be run, walked, hopped, skipped or jumped, interspersed with four coloured bubble stations, bellowing out heaps of frothy bubbles from high-powered foam cannons. Brian House’s Events Fundraiser Kayleigh Penn said 'Bubble Rush is a really exciting family-friendly event so we’re thrilled to be putting it on again for Brian House. There’s always such a fantastic atmosphere at this event as people get absolutely covered in bubbles – you can hear the laughter and see the smiles on their faces as they go through each bubble station, just having such a good time while helping us to raise much-needed money for the Fylde coast’s only children’s hospice.'

Anton’s message is ballroom dream for Irene

A

Trinity Hospice patient got an extra special surprise as staff arranged a personal message from ballroom dance sensation Anton du Beke. Irene Cooney told staff at the hospice’s Day Therapy Unit that she was a huge fan of Anton, and just loved ballroom dancing. So they quickly got to work to see if they could arrange for something special from him. Irene, 91, said she was a really keen ballroom dancer when she was young, and her mother always knew she’d find her in the ballroom – it was her second home. She told staff at the hospice she thought Anton was a ‘gentleman dancer’ and had always liked him. The staff got in touch with Anton’s agent at 'IWILLKNOWSOMEONE', they organised for the dance megastar to record a video message just for Irene, and sent it across to the hospice. Irene, who lives in South Shore, Blackpool, was shown the video when she returned to the Day Therapy Unit after the Christmas break. She said 'When I first saw the message I just could not believe it was him. I had to watch it again! The staff said they had a nice message for me, but I never thought it would be something like this. How lovely of Anton to do it and how kind of everyone at Trinity – I really have never experienced such kindness until coming here. It has made such a difference to me.' The Day Therapy Unit offers people who have a noncurative illness or condition a free 16-week course to access information on symptom control, benefits and counselling, as well as relaxation, physiotherapy and complimentary therapies. Patients are encouraged to make a ‘bucket list’ of things they would like to achieve while they are still able to. As part of her bucket list discussions Irene mentioned to staff about her love of ballroom dance, and, in particular, Anton. Staff Nurse Vicky Rashid said 'When we saw how Irene’s eyes lit up as she talked about ballroom dancing and Anton du Beke we knew we would have to try and get something special for her. We spoke to our colleagues in the communication team, and they managed to get 20

a video message sent over. It was absolutely amazing, and so kind of him to do it for her. It was just lovely to see Irene’s face as she watched the message – we watched it a few times and she was over the moon with it. We’re so grateful to Anton and his team for taking the time to do this for her.” To see Irene’s video from Anton and her reaction, visit https://tinyurl.com/antonirene or search for 'trinityhospice' on youtube.

LINK-Mag Recipe

et for Shrove Tuesday on March 5th with this classic pancake recipe

Makes 6-8 medium pancakes You’ll need: 100g plain flour 2 eggs 300ml/½ pint semi-skimmed milk 1 tbsp vegetable or sunflower oil, plus extra for frying What to do: 1. Put the flour in a large bowl and make a hollow centre. Crack the eggs into the hollow, pour in a splash of the milk and, using a balloon whisk or wooden spoon, start to stir from the centre of the bowl, drawing the flour into the eggs and milk. Beat the mix until smooth then stir in the rest of the milk until it’s the consistency of single cream. Stir in the oil. 2. Put a non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. Pour 1cm oil

into a heatproof jug and keep it to hand. Add a drop of oil to the pan, swirl it around and pour off any excesss back into the jug. Pour in a ladle of batter, tilting the pan and swirling the batter to give a thin, even layer. Leave the pancake alone for 30 secs, or until it starts to colour around the edge. Don’t crank up the heat if this takes longer - as you’ll burn the pancake and it won’t flip.

3. With a fish slice, ease the edge

of the pancake away from the pan, then loosen underneath. Check that the bottom is golden, then turn it over in one quick movement or, if you’re brave and confident enough, give it a flip. Cook for another 30 secs before turning out onto a plate. Eat immediately!

Let’s go fly a kite

F

ylde Council in partnership with kite festival organisers, SmileFactor10, is delighted to announce that the hugely popular St Annes International Kite Festival will return on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th August 2019 with illuminated ‘Kites By Night’ and Fireworks on Friday 9th August to mark the start of this incredible event. Taking place on the beach adjacent to St Annes Pier, the event will attract tens of thousands of visitors from all over the country to see kite flyers from across the globe. Unique kites of all different shapes and sizes will fill the skies creating an incredible spectacle not to be missed. In addition to the kites there will also be a fun fair, donkey rides, attractions, stalls and all the fun of the traditional British seaside. Councillor Little, Chair of Fylde Council’s Tourism and Leisure Committee says, ‘I am so pleased that this popular annual family event is back for another fantastic year and that Fylde Council are able to ensure this event remains firmly on the calendar of what is a growing number of events each year. The passion of Pat May and the kite organising team from SmileFactor10 is obvious and it is great that the Council can work in partnership to ensure the delivery of a successful weekend which I know is the busiest weekend of the year for the town’.

Pat May added ‘The St Annes International Kite Festival has grown to be such a popular event over the years and for Fylde Council to work so closely with the kite committee means we can really focus on delivering a spectacular event which I know is very popular.’ This summer is proving to be another exceptionally busy one with Lytham Festival, the Men’s Senior Open sponsored by Rolex, Kirkfest, Lytham 1940s Wartime Weekend, not to mention the many local carnivals and Club Days. More information can be found on www. discoverfylde.co.uk/kites and those interested in sponsorship or trading at the event should contact kites@fylde.gov.uk
