Hospice is Alfie Boe’s birthday beneficiary

S

inging sensation Alfie Boe celebrated his birthday on September 29th, and his legions of fans donated to his chosen charity – Trinity Hospice and Brian House Children’s Hospice. Each year Alfie donates his birthday to one of his charities, and this year he has selected the Fylde coast’s hospices as birthday beneficiaries. In particular, Alfie is lending his support to the China Trekkers – a team of 22 people including Trinity staff who will spend five days walking along the Great Wall of China in aid of Brian House from next week. Donations can be made online via a page on JustGiving, set up by the Alfie Boe fan blog, thoughtsofjustafan. Alfie’s fans have been supporting Trinity Hospice and Brian House since Alfie became patron of the Bispham-based charity in 2011. Most recently they raised more than £1,200 during an Alfie Boe YouTube Marathon, where fans spent a weekend watching videos of the singer online and made a donation. Jane Ireland, who runs the fan blog said ‘Fans of Alfie are very dedicated and like to support his chosen charities as much as we can, and Trinity is one that we know is close to Alfie’s heart. Earlier this year, Alfie donated a portion of the ticket sale for his Fleetwood concert to Trinity and we at thoughtsofjustafan decided to continue to support Alfie and Trinity when the opportunity arose. Donating to Trinity seems like the perfect way to celebrate Alfie’s birthday and support his local charity at the same time.’ Among the China Trekkers is Trinity’s Corporate Fundraiser, Janet Atkins. She said ‘The whole team has been working hard in preparation for China, making ourselves mentally and physically ready for what we know will be a gruelling challenge. It isn’t going to be easy as we will be walking for up to eight hours each day, but knowing we have Alfie’s support means so much to us and I

know it will help us when things get really tough. Alfie has been a fantastic supporter to us over the years, and we are absolutely thrilled that he has chosen to support us again as part of his birthday celebrations. It means so much to us, and we’re so grateful to all the amazing fans he has who donate from around the world in his name.’ All the money raised through the China Trek will be spent providing respite and palliative care for children with life-limiting conditions on the Fylde coast, free at the point of need. To make a donation online, please visit www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ thoughtsofjustafanalfieboe.

Rae Morris comes home for Christmas

S

uccessful local musician Rae Morris returns home on Saturday 8th December to perform an intimate gig at Bootleg Social on Topping Street in Blackpool. Rae began writing songs while she was still a teenager and came to the attention of BBC Radio Lancashire DJ Sean McGinty after undertaking her first few gigs around the north west. McGinty put Morris forward to perform at the BBC Introducing Stage at the Reading and Leeds Festivals in 2011 and from there she was signed Universal Publishing the same month and Atlantic Records just one month later. Since then the singer has performed at festivals like Glastonbury and Bestival and released her debut album ’Unguarded’ in 2015. After touring the album far and wide, Morris took time off to write her second, ‘Someone Out There’, which saw Morris venture

12

deeper into more electronic territory and was released to widespread acclaim early in 2018. She performed at the Highest Point festival this summer and is looking to wow crowds again with another Lancashire date this winter. At the time of writing tickets were 60% sold out so get in there quickly to avoid dissapointment. Bootleg Social & Pink Rabbit Events in collaboration with ITB present Rae Morris with support from Tuscan Sun. Bootleg Social, Topping Street, Blackpool. wwwbootlegsocial.co.uk

LINK-Mag Health

I

f you have experienced hot flushes, cold shivers, night sweats, palpitations or any of the other unpleasant symptoms of menopause, then you’ll also be familiar with that feeling of frustration, wanting to scream at the world “But I have work to do/ life to live/kids to collect/holidays to go on/cupboards to tidy/ party to go to”! How many things have we put on hold just to deal with menopause? I didn’t sign up for it, did you? Most women I know are conscientious, put others first, take care of the family (young ones, old ones, the grown up kids including many a husband), so is it so much to ask for in our forties/fifties/sixties to get some decent sleep? Not to sweat in bed as if we walked into a sauna fully dressed? Then shiver in cold as if plunged into a freezer a few minutes later? Seriously, what kind of a joke is this?

Let’s start with evolution.

According to Darwin & Co, if a trait in a species serves an evolutionary purpose (that is survival of the species, or procreation), then the trait gets passed on from generation to generation. If a trait has no evolutionary advantage for a species, then it dies out the way the dodo and the dinosaurs went. Then why does half of the world’s population need to carry a microwave oven inside them throughout their middle age and sweat bucketloads in bed? Is this perhaps nature’s clumsy attempt to address worldwide water shortages by recruiting women to produce water once we can no longer produce babies? Take global warming… If it is such a threat to our planet, then whoever came up with the idea of 16

Menopause - Nature’s Way of having a laugh? menopause clearly did not think it through. Never mind the cars or CO2 or cows that heat up the planet, it is the women going through menopause that melt the ice caps, raise global water levels and cause extreme weather conditions from raging hurricanes to devastating mud slides and coastal erosion. Is this not a metaphor for how many of us feel? What about all that advice on how to stop/prevent/reduce hot flushes? Most of us have tried cutting out smoking, drinking, caffeine, calories, food in general, and did it work? Like hell it did! If it were so easy to fool the hypothalamus when ovaries decide to shut shop and oestrogen goes AWOL, wouldn’t we all have tried it already? Hands up

how many of you enjoy palpitating at night until you feel on the brink of a heart attack, so tired that all you can think of is sleep, dying to get some sleep? Changing bedlinen all the time anyone? Having a shower every hour? Because women have nothing better to do with their lives, do we? You’ve done your bit for the survival of the species, sacrificed your uterus, your figure, looks, sleep, hobbies and whatever else, dedicated yourself entirely to small creatures that are the future of our world, and what do you get in return? Menopause.

Lifestyle

And don’t even get me started on meditating, breathing exercises,

New premises for Fylde Coast Fencing It’s coming up to 2 years since Fylde Coast Fencing Ltd started trading and things are moving fast for the team, now located in their new premises on the Queensway Industrial Estate. “There’s still a lot of work ahead” admit brothers Simon and Ben Corbett. “Now we have a larger unit we have plans to expand our product range, artificial grass, garden furniture etc, we’re already thinking about next Spring!” Fencing manufacture and supply is the backbone of the business, and this is continuing to grow “Our trade and public customer base is growing, quality and service have always been at the forefront and we believe this is the key to a successful business”

LINK-Mag Health (continued) yoga, mindfulness and the lot. I’m sure they have a place and maybe they help some women, but why do so many symptoms start at 3am when we are fast asleep? We are told to stop worrying and manage stress, but when we are asleep, simply minding our own business in a blissful oblivion, we are not worrying or stressing, just sleeping! So why do we have to be roused from this rare bliss with a thud in the brain (hammer in the hypothalamus anyone?), followed by palpitations as if a monster was chasing us? We lie there thinking: “But I am not worried about anything, I just want to sleep,” yet the heart is racing, and then you brace yourself for what’s coming next. Microwave goes on and the cooking starts. You keep thinking waterfalls, ice packs, melting ice caps, knowing all too well that you just have to ride it out, so you do, lie there with the blanket kicked off, waiting for the cooking to stop. Then the cold shiver sets in, blanket comes back, and again you ride it out, counting how many hours you have left before the alarm goes off. When you finally stop shivering, so tired you could die, you feel the sleep coming on, and then bang, it starts all over again. And again, and again. When you finally give up on the idea of sleep and tell yourself you can survive on a few hours a night (lucky you!), you try said meditation, breathing, counting sheep, only to realise that our bodies are far too clever to be fooled that easily. Just Ask those women who wanted to give birth ‘naturally’, only to scream for pain relief later. So my answer to the ‘expert’ advice to go and meditate is this: if all the women suffering from menopausal symptoms really took up their 18

advice and dedicated themselves to meditation - say we all enrol in a buddhist retreat somewhere in Nepal - imagine the global fall out. How many men could locate at least one of the following: a) a pair of socks, b) washing machine, c) kids’ PE kit, d) kids’ school?, in the absence of the fairy called wife/ girlfriend?

Eating Our Words

After yet another sleepless night, you promise yourself to improve your no-fat, no sugar, no fun diet even more. You eat even less of everything (by now you are an expert on thermogenic effect of various foods), you are practically vegetarian, your windowsill is brimming with sprouted alfalfa, cupboards are full of beans, you are pouring flax seeds onto everything, chewing sage like it’s a chewing gum. Half of your garden is dedicated to growing sage on an industrial scale, a business idea you came up with during those sleepless hours - a menopause fighting sage farm to support you financially once you lose/ resign from your job that does not recognise hot flushes, menopause or cooling fans for that matter). Just to be sure, you also swallow every supplement on the market that promises to help with hot flushes

and palpitations and sleep. What happens then? The morning after the night before, if you are human, you collapse on the table, forgetting all of the above.

So is menopause a natural stage in a woman’s life? Trust me, if you have ever experienced incessant hot flushes or palpitations, you’d know that there is nothing natural about being boiled from the inside or having your heart race like it’s on speed (no, I have never taken drugs in my life either).

Apparently we live in times of equality. Well, show me a man with a hot flush and a dry vagina, night sweats and cold shivers, and we may be closer to living in an equal world. Believe me, Menopause Matters!

he Canadian pyrotechnics team were named as Blackpool’s World Fireworks Champions for the second time in four years.

Firemaster Productions saw off competition from the French and Romanian teams with a spectacular display during the third heat of this year’s event. The Canadian team, who have been producing worldclass displays for over 10 years, won the same title on their last appearance in Blackpool in 2014. The team’s success was announced on 5th October as UK’s favourite pyrotechnic team, Titanium, put on a spectacular show to close this year’s spectacular competition. The displays are among the most popular events in Blackpool’s exciting calendar, featuring jaw-dropping displays – synched to music – by some of the most talented fireworks technicians in the world, attracting tens of thousands of spectators to Blackpool’s seafront each week. Cllr Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, said ‘This year has seen three exceptional displays and our congratulations go to Firemaster who did Canada proud with a superbly synchronised show.

The World Fireworks Championship is a firm favourite in the Blackpool calendar, illustrated by the sheer number of people who turn out to watch.’ The winner was chosen by a panel of judges including Cllr Campbell; Peter Sedgwick, owner of Blackpool’s piers; and Cheryl Tchobanian, owner of the Beach House Bar and Bistro who again sponsored the judges’ area.

T

he free wristband ballot for the Blackpool Illuminations Switch-On event in 2019 is open right now.

It follows the unprecedented demand for this year’s event when a capacity audience packed the Tower Festival Headland Arena to watch a spectacular fivehour concert, culminating in an unforgettable switch-on by international music star, Alfie Boe. Since then, the VisitBlackpool team has been swamped with requests for information on next year’s event, which will take place on Friday 30th August. It will once again feature a star-studded concert produced in association with MTV. And the best thing is, it’s still free to register – all you have to do is enter the ballot to win wristbands.

Councillor Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council ‘Switch-On night is the biggest night in Blackpool’s calendar and the demand for wristbands gets bigger every year. This year’s SwitchOn was a huge success with Alfie Boe flicking the switch and some fabulous performances by the likes of Ella Eyre, Diversity, Jonas Blue and HRVY. It’s a night not to be missed and I would urge people to apply for their wristbands now – it could be the best free night out you’ll ever have!’

People can put their name in the hat by registering at www.visitblackpool.com/switchon for their chance to receive up to four wristbands per household.

The Switch-On ballot will remain open until Monday 29th July, 2019. From the start of August there will be a limited number of Golden Circle tickets available for sale which will guarantee attendance at the event.

This year, over 130,000 people applied for tickets to attend the event so registration has been opened early to give as many people as possible the chance to win some of the 20,000 tickets for next year’s event.

So, what are you waiting for? Visit www. visitblackpool.com/switchon to register now for your FREE Switch-On wristband!

T

hey are as important to the wildlife garden as butter is to bread, not only providing interest to budding birdwatchers, but helping to keep unwanted pests such as slugs and snails under control. As their natural habitat continues to disappear, it is more important than ever to feed the birds during the winter months. But there are so many different feeders and seed types on the market, it’s difficult to know which are the best. There are a lot of nasty feeders out there which can trap beaks and feet, so you need to go to a reputable supplier. And be aware that some feeders are ridiculously cheap for a reason. Never put out the nylon mesh bags containing fat as birds can become trapped in them. Go for steel mesh feeders and provide a mix of seeds to attract different birds.

Feed the birds

Birds require high energy, high fat foods during the cold winter weather to maintain their body reserves to survive the frosty nights. Finches are especially grateful for seeds in late winter and early spring.

Small flocks of greenfinches can be a common sight at bird tables, sometimes queuing up with chaffinches and sparrows to take a turn at feeders.

In summer they love black sunflower seeds, pinhead oatmeal, soaked sultanas, raisins and currants, mild grated cheese, meal worms, wax worms, mixes for insectivorous birds and good seed mixtures without loose peanuts, on which their young could choke.

There are also many plants you can grow to encourage birds to visit. Traditional countryside hedges are now full of blackberries, elderberries, rosehips, haws and sloes on which the birds can feed, and you can mimic the classic hedgerow in your garden by planting a fruiting hedge.

Never put out loose peanuts, dry hard foods, large chunks of bread, or fats during the spring or summer months. Make sure you buy ‘safe nuts’ from reputable outlets and offer them in cages. Peanuts will attract blue tits, great tits, woodpeckers and even robins if you crush the peanuts, niger seeds will encourage finches and siskins, but the more variety of food you have, the larger the range of birds you are likely to attract. 24

Use bird tables to attract larger birds such as collared doves, wood pigeons and starlings.

The RSPB advises gardeners to mix rugosa roses, elder and hawthorn to act as a wild foodstore, even adding a gooseberry or bramble if there’s room. If you have a large garden, try growing hazel (Corylus avellana) for its nuts and attractive catkins. Other plants, including crab apples, ivy, box-leaved honeysuckle and cotoneaster also add glorious colour to the autumn and winter scene as well as producing fruit and berries for the birds. Avoid sterile hybrids, which won’t produce seeds or fruit, but give your garden some colour and nutritious seeds for the birds by planting coneflowers, teasels and knautia macedonica. If you have fallen apples and pears on your lawn, leave them for the song thrushes and blackbirds who will feast on them. Let the birds make the most of nature’s larder - but make sure you offer them some extra titbits to help them through the winter months.

LINK-MAG Gardening Best of the bunch - Cotinus

Commonly known as the smoke bush because of its fluffy plumes of pale pink flowers which appear above the foliage in summer, producing a smoke-like haze, this deciduous shrub is a must for the autumn garden. You need a fair amount of space as it can become the size of a small tree, so grow it as a stand-alone specimen or in a large shrub border in sun or light shade, in moist but well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Good choices include C ‘Flame’, whose oval, light green leaves turn brilliant orange-red in autumn, and C coggygria ‘Royal Purple’, grown for its purple foliage, whose leaves turn orange and red in autumn before falling.

Harvest the beans before they become starchy, removing the pods from the base of the plant first and working upwards. Good varieties include ‘Aquadulce Claudia’, which can be sown outdoors in autumn if the soil is still warm.

Three ways to... prevent wind scorch 1. Plant vulnerable shrubs in the shelter of deciduous

hedges, which filter the wind. Dense evergreen hedges and walls may simply deflect the wind and cause damaging turbulence elsewhere. 2. Mulch the soil around plants to reduce the drying effect of the wind. 3. Place container-grown plants against a sheltered house wall, but be careful to avoid wind tunnels.

What to do this month • Cut out loganberry and blackberry cans that have

Good enough to eat Broad beans

Broad beans have been chosen by the National Trust as one of the top-three veg to grow in winter. Sowing at this time of the year means they won’t be attacked by pests, while children love picking them and eating them straight from the pod - a great way to get them eating vegetables. Only attempt autumn sowing if your plot is sheltered, free-draining and in a mild area - and choose a hardy variety. For all other locations it’s better to sow under cloches in early spring. Early beans can be harvested from May onwards. They aren’t too fussy about soil requirements, but will do better if well-rotted organic matter is dug into the ground before planting. Sow seeds individually at a depth of 5cm with a dibber or pencil, 23cm apart in small blocks or double rows. Aim for a series of successional sowings of around 10 seeds and, if you sow your beans in autumn, delay the first spring sowing until the weather has warmed up enough for the autumn beans to have put on some strong growth.

finished cropping, and tie in new ones to the support framework. • Protect cauliflower curds by bending two or three leaves over them. • Start heating the greenhouse at night to protect tender plants if frost is threatened. • Make new lawns from turf. • Examine pears in store every few days, and eat them as soon as they are ripe. • Shelter pot-grown strawberries from heavy rain. • Cut down the top growth of dahlias when it is blackened by frost, then lift and dry the tubers for storage. • Remove half-hardy fuchsias from the garden and from containers, and put them in pots to overwinter under cover. • Wrap containers of potted acers with horticultural fleece to stop the compost freezing and protect the plant. • Continue to clear fallen leaves, and recycle them to make leafmould. • Take hardwood cuttings of roses and root outdoors. • Cut down faded border perennials and lightly fork the soil between them. • Dig up and store gladiolus corms. • Finish lifting potatoes, leaving them on the surface of the soil for a couple of hours to dry out, or in a greenhouse if it’s damp. they must be dry before putting them into storage.

Caring for your pet

A

rthritis in dogs and cats is one of the most common problems our pets can face as they get older and, as with humans, it can flare up in cold weather. Natural wear and tear, caused by aging, reduces the amount of cartilage that cushions the joints. This causes swelling and pain. Signs of arthritis in your pet include stiffness or a reluctance to exercise, which we usually notice in our pets after they have been resting. If they are struggling to groom themselves, are overly licking areas that might be painful or are protective of you touching certain areas then they will need to be seen by the vet. PDSA Vet Olivia AndersonNathan said ‘Pets with arthritis may seem to have a little less energy, preferring to curl up in their beds instead of going out on a walk or spending time in the outdoors. Cats can struggle to groom themselves properly and may have a noticeable deterioration in their coat quality.’ Arthritis can’t be cured, but it can be managed through medication and simple changes to a pet’s lifestyle. Olivia adds ‘It’s worth visiting your vet if you notice any symptoms, or suspect your pet may have arthritis. Painrelief and anti-inflammatory medication can be prescribed, and you’ll also be advice given on changes you can make at home to help make your pet more comfortable. Maintaining a healthy weight is very important because excess weight puts

Caring for pets with arthritis even more pressure on sore joints. It’s worth asking your vet about prescription diets or joint supplements for arthritis too, as these can beneficial.’

A typical treatment plan for a pet with arthritis could include:

‘When it comes to exercise, “little and often” helps keep joints mobile and puts them under less pressure than longer walks with extended periods of rest. Your vet or vet nurse will be able to give you an appropriate exercise and diet programme that is unique to your pet’s needs.’

supplements that may improve joint function or reduce inflammation • Changes to your pet’s diet to keep them a healthy weight and size • Regular periods of short gentle exercise • Hydrotherapy, physiotherapy and other complementary treatments, if advised by your vet

Hydrotherapy, physiotherapy and acupuncture can also be helpful to relieve the difficulties and pain associated with arthritis. Ask your vet for a referral to an accredited specialist.

• Medication prescribed for your pet by their vet to reduce pain and swelling

• Prescription diets or nutritional

Caring for an arthritic pet involves understanding from their owner, but with careful management and treatment, affected pets can still enjoy a good quality of life.

The unforgettable hero

A

Trinity Hospice volunteer has been named a community hero for not only raising money for the charity but for helping make a difference to people who are bereaved. Lorna Cunningham received the ‘Ben Ashworth Award’ for Fundraising at the BBC Radio Lancashire Community Heroes Awards 2018, which were held in Prestonin Sepptember. Lorna has helped to raise more than £10,000 in the last 12 months by making Memory Elephants for people who have lost loved ones. It has created what the hospice is calling an ‘Elephant in the Room movement’, as orders have come in from across the country, resulting in a waiting list of around six months. Lorna, who lives in Thornton, started making the Memory Elephants as a way of coping herself when her husband Iain died in 2014. Iain had been looked after by Trinity’s nurses, so she offered them to the hospice as a way of raising money. The elephants are made using cotton clothing, and as well as being a lasting memory of someone no longer here, they have opened up conversations around death and dying. After receiving her award, for which she was nominated by the Fundraising Team at Trinity Hospice, Lorna said ‘I never expected the elephants to have become this massive movement – never in my wildest dreams did I think they would take off like this. I was so proud to accept the award, and I did so on behalf of the hospice. This award and these elephants are not just about me; there are a lot of people working behind the scenes on the project. It’s certainly not happened by itself.’ The team at Trinity is hoping to pass the movement on to other hospices around the country, in the hope they can take it on to raise money for their own charities and to encourage more people to think and talk about death and dying. Trinity’s Head of Fundraising, Linzi Warburton, said ‘We are incredibly proud of Lorna, and we are so pleased that she has been rightly recognised through this award. No-one could have ever imagined the elephants would take off the way they have, and that’s testament to the hours of work, love and attention that goes into each unique product. We know they make a huge difference to the people who have received them, helping them remember their loved ones in such a special and lasting way. We are very hopeful that we can share this important movement with other hospices across the country, but for now we are celebrating Lorna, and her wonderful Elephants’. Ribby’s big Trinity donation

Staff at Ribby Hall Village present a cheque for £21,180 to Janet Atkins, Corporate Fundraiser for Brian House Children’s Hospice.

S

taff at Ribby Hall Village have done so much fundraising over the past three years they have raised enough to pay for nearly a whole weeks running costs at Brian House Children’s Hospice. Workers at the holiday village in Wrea Green chose to support Brian House as their charity of the year and chose to keep that support going for three years. By holding an array of fundraising events, they raised more than £21,000 and boosted their fundraising efforts by sponsoring Brian House events. Together they have raised enough to pay for six whole days of care at the specialist children’s hospice based in Bispham. Brand and Communications Manager at Ribby Hall Village, Charlotte Gili-Ross, said ‘Our employees choose which charity we support. We are a family business, based in Lancashire, very much aimed at attracting families to our destination. It was therefore important that we supported a charity that’s focussed on spending quality family time together. It’s been a whirlwind calendar of more than 25 events, challenges and get-togethers but every department really embraced Brian House, making fundraising an integral part of what we were doing.’ The charity team at the five-star holiday retreat took part in a Manchester to Blackpool bike ride, badminton tournaments and quiz nights. They also organised a

casino night, Ribby’s Got Talent, a Ladies Who Lunch event and hosted Brian House’s fire walk event earlier this year. Charlotte added ‘We know that the work Brian House does is amazing, day in and day out – and that’s why a lot of time and imagination went into making our fundraising events a success.’ It costs £3,597.90 to run Brian House for a day, offering respite and overnight care for children and young people with life-limiting conditions. Corporate Fundraiser for the children’s hospice, Janet Atkins, said ‘It has been such a pleasure working with everyone at Ribby Hall Village, and seeing their events go on to be so successful in order for them to make this incredible donation for Brian House. We get less than 13 per cent of the money we need to run our children’s hospice from the government, so we rely on fundraisers like those at Ribby Hall Village just to keep our doors open and services free of charge to the local families who need them. We’re sending a huge thank you and well done to everyone at Ribby Hall Village who has helped to make this incredible difference.’ For more information on the charity or to find out how you can help visit www.brianhouse.org.uk

Backgammons back

A

local business offering bespoke backgammon playing sets is celebrating after reaching its global sales target of 200 boards, picking up a shortlisting for a prestigious national design award and acquiring a legion of high profile fans in the process. Bone Club, founded by Poulton-le-Fylde designer and backgammon enthusiast, Guy Haslam (45), started out as a community for local backgammon players ten years ago. Haslam, who studied furniture design and antique restoration, identified a gap in the market for a championship sized backgammon board that could enable players, new and old, to have the experience of championship play at an affordable price (£149). Utilising his sculpture and carpentry skills, Haslam began designing and manufacturing the ‘ready to play’ collection of competition size backgammon boards, with the first hitting the market in 2016. Guy added this product range to his existing bespoke, handmade collection with private commissions offering boards made of leather, brass and Oak. What started out as a passion project has soon become a viable business with over 200 boards sold worldwide and a forecast to sell a further 100 before the close of 2018. Bone Club will also introduce a new range of board, ‘the good traditional’ which will be available from October onwards (RRP £299). In September, the Bone Club backgammon board was shortlisted for a prestigious UK Backgammon Federation award for ‘best design’. Alongside recognition from the world of backgammon, Bone Club has been well received by a number of high profile fans. International news giant Bloomberg purchased six boards for its summer party, the Malaysian royal family have a bespoke Bone Club board and two-time backgammon world champion and professional player Bill Robertie is also a fan of the brand. More recently, world-renowned drum and bass master, and MBE awarded DJ, Goldie joined the Bone Club fold. The international music legend, who is a huge fan of backgammon, has waxed lyrical about his love for his Bone Club board to his 90,000 Instagram followers, pitching himself against Hollywood actor Jason Statham for a game. Speaking about the boom of Bone Club, founder Guy Haslam commented ‘I started out the Bone

Club community as a way to reconnect with family and friends after relocating to the Fylde coast from Manchester ten years ago and I never imagined it would take the path that it has today. I’m hugely excited by innovating the boards and raising the profile of backgammon amongst new and global audiences. We’ve large ambitions to create new products, ranging from Carbon Fibre backgammon boards to WIFI backgammon boards, and are in talks with a US distributor to help take Bone Club Stateside. And with the likes of Goldie – who I’m still waiting to take up my challenge of a game – and other high profile players all talking about the game, I’m confident that we’ll see more young players coming through the ranks and making their own mark on backgammon.’ Already innovating the Bone Club proposition, Guy has adapted his competition sized board range to include roll up travel boards, and in order to drive further innovation, Bone Club has recently purchased Andrew Pinkus backgammon machinery and equipment to enhance its board manufacturing capabilities. With a true passion to being back the love of the game to everyone, Bone Clubs is building its community with regular events where everyone is welcome to come along, no matter what level of player you are. Those wishing to join the Bone Club backgammon community can find out more about events, and purchase the boards, at www.boneclub.co.uk. Bone Club’s are beginning to pop up around the county with regular club’s at Boca in Poulton-lefylde on a Wednesday night 7-10pm and FLOK in Manchester on a Sunday afternoon 4-7. Come join the club. Money matters with Martin Lewis

Children’s savings accounts

T

he world of children’s savings is actually far more competitive those for grown-ups. Done right, interest rates are far higher though the amounts allowed are smaller. So with the long run-up to Christmas soon to start, and the market all shook up with a change of best-buys, let me run through how to play it to perfection. And don’t do this alone. If your kids or grandkids are old enough, sit down with them and talk them through each savings pick and let them choose - turn it into a fun financial game. This is crucial financial education – teaching them not just to save, but importantly where to save to get the most from their money.

38

Earn 4.5% interest if you save each month If you’re looking for somewhere to put children’s savings, pick the account paying the highest rate. On interest, the easy winner is the Halifax Kids’ Regular Saver (www. Halifax.co.uk), for (up to age 15), which pays 4.5% AER fixed for a year. You can pay in £10 to £100 per month, and you are allowed to miss a month, but you can’t withdraw any money until the year’s up.

After a year, the rate drops, so get your child to set a diary reminder and move their money to a better account when it does. If you’ve more to save then Saffron Building Society (www. saffronbs.co.uk) is similar at 4% AER, though with this one you can make withdrawals. If you’re not near a branch, then it can be opened by post.

Earn 3.5% on lump sums

Nationwide has just launched its new Future Saver account for under 15s. It pays 3.5% AER, but only if the parent or guardian holds a Nationwide current account (not flex basic). Up to £5,000 can be saved in it each year, but only one penalty-free withdrawal is allowed from it. If you don’t have the Nationwide current account, it pays 2.5%, in which case the HSBC MySavings account (www.hsbc.co.uk) pays 3% on up to £3,000 and it allows you to withdraw money as often as you like. In the unlikely event that your little one has really big money to save, Skipton Building Society’s Children’s Saver easy access account (www.skipton. co.uk) pays 2.25% on up to £50,000.

Written by Martin lewis twitter@martinlewis The Top Children’s Accounts with debit cards

Some older children want accounts where they can spend on a card or online. If they’re aged 11-18, the Santander 123 Mini account (www.santander. co.uk) pays 3% on £300-£2,000 and gives a debit card to use in shops – though if they’re under 13, you need to have a Santander account for them to open it. Alternatively, the TSB Under-19s’ Account (www.tsb.co.uk) can be opened by 11 to 18-year-olds and pays interest of 2.5% on balances between £1 and £2,500. It offers the choice of a cash withdrawal only card, or a Visa debit card to use for cash, online and in store. There’s also been a growing market in prepaid cards to spend in store and online for children aged over 8. These allow extra functions such as letting you set spending limits and monitoring their spending. Yet they don’t pay interest and do charge a fee – so you have to choose between cost and functionality. Nimbl (www.nimbl.com) is £15/year, Osper (www.osper.com) £30/year and GoHenry (www.gohenry.co.uk) £36 a year.

Can grandparents open these accounts? For children under roughly age 18, an adult will need to open the account (with the child’s ID) and be a trustee or signatory on the account. Most accounts including Santander and Nationwide require the adult to be a person with parental responsibility, though grandparents and other family members can pay in. With Halifax, grandparents are allowed to manage the account.

The top paying Junior ISA pays 3.6% Junior ISAs (JISAs) are savings (or investment) accounts. You can save up to a set amount each tax year - £4,260 in this tax year - and the money is then locked away until the child’s 18th birthday (after that it’s theirs to do what they want with – regardless of why you saved it). The big sell is that the interest is taxfree, but these days that’s irrelevant for most as: • Children pay tax just like adults, meaning they can earn £11,850 each year without paying tax on it. Unless they hit it big, early on X-factor that’s unlikely, so their savings interest won’t be taxed. • There is a rule that says kids can only earn £100 interest a year (so that’s about £3,000 saved in the top easy-access account) from money given by each parent. Above that it’s counted as the parents’ income and taxed at their rate. This used to be an issue, but as now basic rate taxpayers can earn £1,000 interest a year without paying tax on it (or £500 for higher rate tax payers) most adults don’t pay tax on savings either – so unless you’ve a shedload of savings this isn’t an issue.

Martin Lewis

Those whose children have Child Trust Funds (CTFs) can also transfer them into Junior ISA savings, the same way. That’s worth doing as CTF rates are far lower. There are over 1 million dormant CTFs at the moment, so if your child is aged 7 to 16 it’s worth checking if they have one. You can use the special tool on www.hmrc. gov.uk Martin Lewis is the Founder and Chair of MoneySavingExpert. com. To join the 13 million people who get his free Money Tips weekly email, go to www. moneysavingexpert. com/latesttip.

So Junior ISAs are now only worth it for the wealthy or those who want to use it as a way to lock money away until their kids turn 18. The top rate currently is the Coventry BS (www. coventrybuildingsociety. co.uk) paying 3.6%. If your savings Junior ISA pays less, you can apply to the Coventry to have it transferred.
