There is a Lightpool...
B
lackpool’s award-winning Lightpool Festival is back again this year for October half-term starting from the week commencing 15th October.
The festival will provide a spectacular mix of live performance, light-based art installations, the return of the illuminated tram parade and a special collaboration with the BBC Philharmonic. The inaugural Lightpool Festival was staged in 2016 and went on to be named as best major event in the Lancashire Tourism Awards. A smaller-scale festival was held in 2017, introducing for the first time a promenade parade of Blackpool’s unique collection of illuminated heritage trams. Thanks to a grant of £85,000 through Arts Council, England’s National Lottery funded Grants for the Arts programme as the main funder and other key partners VisitBlackpool, LeftCoast and the BBC Philharmonic. The 2018 festival will revert to a large-scale festival, with events taking place over two weeks at the end of October. Jane Beardsworth, Director North, Arts Council England said ‘I’m delighted that we are supporting this year’s Lightpool Festival with funding from the National Lottery. The festival is a great way for residents and visitors alike to enjoy an amusing and thought provoking programme of light works which accompany the world famous Illuminations.’ The festival programme will be launched in the week commencing October 15th with ‘Light Odyssey’, a fully immersive light and sound spectacular featuring the BBC Philharmonic in the iconic Empress Ballroom in the Winter Gardens.
recruited cast of more than 100 people. The festival programme will be complemented by the Lightpool 3D projection shows, which will be projected each night on to the Blackpool Tower buildings throughout the Illuminations season, August 31st to November 4th. Cllr Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, said ‘We are delighted that Arts Council England has come on board as a lead partner, giving us the opportunity to create another large-scale festival during the October half-term. Over the past two years, the festival events have proved hugely popular with residents and visitors and from what is already planned, we know that this year’s event is going to be bigger and better than ever.’ Most of the events will be free to access, although the Light Odyssey show will be ticketed. Further details on all the events will follow in the coming weeks. For regular updates, go to www.visitblackpool.com/ lightpoolfestival
Over the following week, there will be a light-based art trail along the promenade and through the town centre, with live fire and light-related performances from October 25-27. These will include the return of last year’s hugely successful illuminated tram parade as part of a dazzling Carnival of The Lights on 25th October. On Friday 26th October, LeftCoast will present an epic dance production featuring projections and pyrotechnics with a locally

Caring for your pet
L
ooking after our pets takes a lot of commitment and devotion. As they age, they may need more of our help, but by keeping a close eye on our pets, they can continue to lead happy and healthy lives into their twilight years. PDSA Vet Olivia Anderson-Nathan explains that many of the ailments old age pets can suffer from are similar to those we might expect to get ourselves. she says ‘It’s incredibly common for our pets to start to slow down as they reach their senior years but, with a little extra care and attention, we can treat or accommodate for many of the things that cause them to slow down. Regular vet check-ups help to spot problems earlier and mean treatment can be started sooner, helping your pet continue to lead a happy and healthy life. It’s important pet owners don’t dismiss signs of disease as inevitable due to old age. Stiffness, tiredness and changes to toileting habits are just some of the symptoms that may mean there’s a problem and it’s important to speak to your vet to see what you can do to alleviate symptoms and help your pet.’ Arthritis, dementia-like symptoms and most cancers are all more prevalent in older pets, as they are in people. Older pets are also at risk of other diseases like diabetes, kidney and liver problems and hormone imbalances. A check-up at the vet every six months, even if they seem healthy, will help ensure any illness your pet might be developing are spotted at an early stage, when there’s a better chance of successful treatment or management of many conditions. Signs your pet may be unwell are the same for older pets as they are for younger pets. In older pets, there are some subtle signs that it’s good to keep an eye out for: • Changes in weight (i.e. unexplained loss or gain) • Changes in energy levels (most often tiredness, but an unusual increase in activity is also a symptom)
Looking after Old Age Pets PDSA advice on recognising signs of illness in older pets • Stiffness when standing up
or walking, or lameness that’s worse after resting • Changes in appetite (most often off their food, but being ravenous all the time is also a sign) • Drinking more • Changes to toileting habits (e.g. going to the toilet more than usual or toileting in unusual places) • Bad breath or sweet-smelling breath • New lumps and bumps or swellings • Seeming confused • Barking or meowing at night If your pet shows any of these symptoms, no matter what their age, it is worth getting them checked by a vet to get any health problems treated. Treatments and management
can include medication or surgery, as well as changes to your pet’s routine or environment (like offering ramps for arthritic pets, or feeding diabetic pets at specific times). It’s important to remember that many pets stay very healthy through later life, but spotting problems early often means treatment is more effective. Olivia adds ‘Even if your pet does develop an illness in old age, many can be treated or managed, ensuring they can lead a happy life. So if you’re worried about your pet’s health at any time, take to them to your vet as soon as possible to stand the best chance of successfully treating the condition.’

LINK-Mag Recipe Serves 4 Preparation time: 45 minutes Cooking time: 2 hours
You’ll need:
For the pastry: • 110g butter • 280g plain flour • 1 ½ large eggs, beaten • • • • • •
• • • • •
8 shallots 40g butter 500g shoulder steak, trimmed and cut into 2cm cubes (or larger) 25g plain flour, seasoned with salt and pepper and a tablespoon of paprika I tbsp sunflower oil 100g streaky bacon in one piece, cut into lardons (short strips and approx. 5 mm thick) 200g chestnut mushrooms, halved 200ml red wine 200ml beef stock 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
What to do:
Pre heat the oven to 180°C/350°F/ Gas Mark 4. To make the pastry, rub the butter, flour and a pinch of salt together in a mixing bowl until the mixture has the consistency of fine breadcrumbs. Add the egg and bring it all together into a dough. Knead this lightly 3 or 4 times with floured hands. Cover in cling film and refrigerate for an hour before use. Take the shallots and pop into a pan of cold water. Bring the pan to the simmer and gently cook the shallots for about one and a half minutes. This will make the shallots easier to peel and assist the cooking. Peel off the skin without cutting the ends of the shallots off. Lightly shave of any 16
Shallot, Chunky Steak and Mushroom Pie remaining root fibres but do not cut into the shallot at all. Melt 25g of the butter in a flameproof casserole dish. Add the shallots and fry over a medium heat for about 10 minutes, until nicely golden. Meanwhile, put the steak into a polythene bag with the seasoned flour and toss together so that it becomes well coated. Heat a large frying pan until very hot. Add the sunflower oil, then the bacon and stir fry for a few minutes until richly golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and add to the shallots in the casserole dish. Now brown the mushrooms for a couple of minutes, then add to the casserole dish. Add the remaining butter to the frying pan and brown the beef well on all sides. Transfer to the casserole dish. Now add the wine and stock to the frying pan, bring to the boil and scrape up all the browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Pour this into the casserole dish, add plenty of seasoning, especially pepper, and mix together well.
Cover the casserole with a tight fitting lid and bake for 1-1½ hours until the meat is tender and the sauce has thickened. Now all you have to do is stir in the chopped parsley, check the seasoning and tip into your pie dish then let cool as quickly as possible. Roll the pastry out on a floured surface to a thickness of a beer mat. Trim a strip long enough to go around the rim of a 20cm pie dish. When the stew has cooled, line the rim of the dish with the thin strip of pastry. Dampen the pastry rim by brushing with beaten egg. Cut a piece of pastry to fit across the top of the dish and place on top of the pie filling, pressing the edges together to seal. Make a steam hole in the centre of the pie by cutting a small cross in the centre with a sharp knife, then brush with more beaten egg. Pop the pie into the oven and cook for about 35 minutes, and serve. Serve with mash and mixed greens.

Alfie fans raise funds for Trinity
G
enerous Alfie Boe fans around the world have raised an incredible £1,283 for Trinity Hospice by watching videos of the singer in action over one weekend at the end of August. The ‘Alfie Boe YouTube Marathon’ organised by the official Alfie Boe fan blog, ‘thoughtsofjustafan’ asked fans to make a donation online while watching and sharing their favourite Alfie moments. It’s the second time the blog has organised the event in aid of Trinity Hospice, where Alfie is a Patron, and this year’s total is more than double that of last year’s.
Alfie himself sent a tweet on Sunday thanking fans for their support of Trinity Hospice. He said ‘A massive thank you to all who took part in @AlfieBoeFanBlog’s @YouTube marathon which has raised an amazing £1,283.81 for @ trinity_hospice!’
out there who made a donation as part of the Alfie Boe YouTube Marathon. The event raised a fantastic sum of money which, when we saw that some of it came from Japan and the US, is just staggering. We are so privileged to have Alfie as our Patron, as events like this prove his name alone encourages people to support our very local charity and hospice care. We can’t thank thoughtsofjustafan enough for putting on this event in aid of Trinity Hospice and Brian House Children’s Hospice, and encouraging everyone who took part to donate whatever they could help us provide the very best palliative care here on the Fylde coast.’
Head of Fundraising at Trinity Hospice Linzi Warburton said ‘We are incredibly grateful to all the Alfie Boe fans

tress in manageable doses is not harmful to our health, but how we deal with it (or don’t) can be. From deadlines at work and battling traffic, to caring for ill relatives or a lack of sleep, there is an endless list of potential stressors everywhere we go. On a practical level, a bit of stress fuels our productivity to finish a project on time. Physically, stress makes our bodies work faster and harder, a helpful trait when we need to remove ourselves from danger – think prehistoric man running away from being someone’s dinner, or moving away from an out-ofcontrol car in today’s world. On a molecular level, stress triggers a chain reaction of chemical processes, with inflammation being our first line of defence against pathogens. Acute inflammation with its features of redness, heat, pain and swelling of the injured tissue, for example from a cut, used to be a lot more important before antibiotics were discovered, but it still saves our lives today. However, a number of factors related to modern lifestyle perpetuate our stress response in ways that lead to chronic, low level inflammation detrimental to our health and wellbeing. Pollution and chemical used in agriculture and typical homes can take years or even decades to make us ill, but so does obesity, a bad diet, long working hours and not enough down time. What connects these seemingly unrelated issues is the underlying chronic inflammation that goes on in our bodies largely unnoticed until something gives, and we suddenly find ourselves being diagnosed with one thing or another. So what can we do before it’s too late? 22
Coping with Stress Improve your diet
Eat more fresh fruit, vegetables, legumes (beans and chickpeas for example), healthy fats like avocadoes, nuts and seeds, olive oil, and fish – especially oily fish, due to its omega-3 essential fatty acids. Our body cannot produce omega-3s, so we have to eat them regularly to lower inflammation. Reduce the amount of processed meats and snacks such as sweets, cakes and crisps.
Lose weight
If you are over 25 – 30% body fat, then losing the excess body fat should be a priority. ‘Fat in large amounts is an inflammatory tissue,’ says Derek Gilroy, an immunologist at University College London.
Exercise
Activity reduces inflammation and helps fat metabolism, encouraging the body to burn it off rather than store it. If you are new to exercise, start with regular gentle walks, swimming, yoga, pilates or Tai Chi, gradually increasing the duration of your sessions, then their frequency, and finally intensity, until you
can do something active every day. Vigorous house chores and gardening also count. If you are fit enough to exercise consistently, then try high intensity interval training (HIIT) a couple of times a week. Most personal trainers recommend this method as it delivers fast results, but start with short sessions, gradually increasing the duration by adding 5 minutes to your workouts every week or two. Don’t jump straight into a daily bootcamp of gruelling workouts if you have not exercises consistently for a while, or if you have an injury.
De-stress
Although exercise is a great way to de-stress, most of us also need something else to wind down. Find what works for you: a holiday, a regular massage, gardening, meditation, bird-watching, writing a journal, talking to a friend. Keep a regular, predictable schedule of working and resting – our bodies thrive on routine, and remember that by dealing with your stress levels you will also dial down the inflammation in your body.

O
ver the past decade the number of hedgehogs has dropped by a third and this loss is part of a long-term decline. It is estimated that in the 1950s we had 30 million of these prickly but cute nocturnal animals. Today, approximately one million remain. So what has caused this sharp fall and what can we do to help the remaining hedgehogs thrive? Although some hedgehogs die on our roads, the rise in the number of their predator – the badger - did not help. The use of pesticides in agriculture leads to a drop in many species of insects, and insects are among a hedgehog’s favourite diet staples. In addition to insects, hedgehogs also eat beetles, earthworms, frogs and toads, as well as grass roots, berries, mushrooms and bird eggs, even that perennial garden pest, the slug. Therefore if the population of hedgehogs is dropping sharply, it points to a wider problem in the ecosystem. Making our gardens more wildlife friendly gives the hedgehog’s diet a significant boost, and this means relaxing slightly our obsession with immaculate gardens and manicured lawns. Tempting as it may be to spray every last daisy peeking out of a pristine lawn, think how you would feel if someone came to your fridge at night and sprayed your cottage pie with poison. Did you know that Germany has lost three quarters of their rural insects in the last 25 years? This means butterflies, wasps and bees, not just the annoying mosquitos and flies. The German study was originally prompted by anecdotal evidence of declining numbers of bugs splattered on car windscreens. Why is this important? Flying insects pollinate crops, so they are crucial to growing food, but for insects to thrive, they need meadows full of wild flowers. The vast fields of intensively farmed land have little to offer to their wellbeing. Adding to the problem are the disappearing hedgerows that make way for new roads and houses, thus forming ideal conditions for fewer bugs, declining wildlife, and the disappearing hedgehog population. The scale of this loss has prompted scientists to warn about our world marching towards ecological Armageddon. We can all help by supporting wildlife and sustainable farming methods in any way we can, and this is one more reason to buy our fruit and vegetables from local farms.
24
Let’s help the humble Hedgehog To further help the hedgehog’s survival, we can encourage hedgehog-friendly habitats in our gardens. They love sheltered places such as hedgerows, but also piles of leaves under the hedges and heaps of logs or twigs, so resist the urge to tidy up every corner of the garden. In town and city gardens, where you may only have a wooden fence on both sides, creating a small hole about a size of a CD is crucial. Hedgehogs cover some mileage in their search for food, and enabling them to roam from garden to garden helps in their search of shelter and a varied diet. Should you find a hedgehog trapped in a small garden with a uniform, weed-free lawn, help the hedgehog pop across to the neighbours for some different flavoured insects, it might feel like a steak night!
A few things you may not know about hedgehogs: • They can live for 2 to 7 years, depending on the species. • -The hedgehog’s spines are not poisonous or barbed. • -Hedgehog does not have a fight-or-flight response, but
it has a protective mechanism that enables it to roll into a tight ball. • -They are mostly nocturnal animals and sleep throughout the day - under bushes, rocks, piles of leaves, or in dens dug in the ground.

LINK-MAG Gardening Best of the bunch - Pyracantha (Firethorn)
These famously prickly evergreen shrubs are ideal for training against walls - not only to show their wonderful berries off to their best but also to deter opportunist burglars, thanks to the sharp thorns. They can also be grown as free-standing bushes, and most will be producing berries now in varying shades of red, orange or yellow. Birds tend to leave them alone, so the berries can remain until Christmas and beyond. The most popular is P coccinea ‘Lalandel’, which produces orange-red berries, while ‘Orange Glow’ provides excellent orange berries and ‘Soleil d’Or’ has yellow berries. Plants will grow to 2.5m x 2.5m and look wonderful if trained as espaliers. They thrive in any reasonable garden soil in sun and partial shade.
Things to do this month... • Plant new climbers, shrubs •
• • •
Good enough to eat... Pumpkins
A pumpkin is not just for Halloween - they can make great soups and pies, and are really not difficult to grow. These huge orange veg need a long, hot growing season to fully ripen, and are best planted in fertile, moist soil in the sun. Sow seeds indoors in April and plant out when all risk of frost has passed, protecting the young plants with cloches if the weather turns really cold. Give the plants some liquid fertiliser every two weeks and water during particularly hot or dry spells. They make a good strong root system so, once established, they are not as thirsty as courgettes. When growing large cultivars, remove the growing tip when three fruits have set, giving them a better chance of ripening. If you only want one giant pumpkin, just leave one fruit on each plant. Put a layer of straw or a board under the fruits to keep them clean, and let them ripen on the ground until they sound hollow when tapped. Good varieties include ‘Triple Treat’, which is round and orange with tasty flesh, and ‘Becky’, a medium-sized variety ideal for carving. If pumpkins are fully ripened, they should develop a hard skin which will help it last in storage for months.

encourage friends and neighbours to take them on. That way, a hardpushed local authority would be less likely to sell it to developers, claiming • there is no demand. 2. If your site is not thriving, take a more active role in self-management, sparking enthusiasm so that everyone pulls together and takes pride in the site. Councils offer various levels of independence, but it is in their interest to hand over some of the management as it saves them time and • money. 3. and trees while the soil is still warm. Take cuttings or save tender plants when you clear out summer containers if you have space to overwinter them. Check the greenhouse heating and insulate to save heat. Make sure bowls of bulbs being forced for indoor flowering don’t dry out. As land becomes vacant in the vegetable plot, start digging when ground conditions are good, leaving the ground rough to allow the frost to penetrate. Protect strawberries potted for forcing early next year against frost by putting them in a cold frame. Continue to plant biennials such as foxglove, Canterbury bells and honesty. Check over brassicas for caterpillars of the cabbage white butterfly and pick off any you find. Cut back asparagus foliage and weed the bed and any self-set plants before applying a layer of organic matter. Once leaves have fallen, prune gooseberries. Mow your lawn less frequently as growth slows down, and raise the height of the cutting blades. Reduce the feeding of fish in ponds as any food not eaten will just decompose in the water. Complete the pruning of climbing roses and tie them in before the autumn winds pick up. Trim conifers if necessary for the last time, but don’t cut into old wood.

LINK-Mag Recipe
American style Beetroot Pie
Serves 4 Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 45-50 minutes
You’ll need: 250g shortcrust pastry 325g plain cooked (vacuum packed) beetroot, drained 3 eggs 75g soft brown sugar 2tsp ground mixed spice ½ tsp ground allspice (optional) ½ tsp ground ginger (optional) 250ml double cream
Why not try this beetroot pie as an alternative to pumpkin this Halloween?
What to do: Preheat the oven to 200˚C/Gas Mark 6. Roll out the pastry and use it to line a 23cm loose bottomed pie tin. Line with greaseproof paper and fill with baking beans. Bake blind for 20 minutes. Whilst the pastry is baking, prepare the filling by pureeing the beetroot along with the eggs in a food processor. In a small saucepan add the sugar, all the spices and cream and bring slowly up to a simmering point. Pour into the food processor and mix thoroughly with the beetroot puree. Remove the pastry case from the oven and reduce the temperature to 180˚C/Gas Mark 4. Pour the filling carefully into the pastry case and bake for around 25-30 minutes. The edge should be puffed up a little and the centre will still be a touch wobbly. Allow to cool and chill in the fridge. Serve with crème fraiche. www.lovebeetroot.co.uk

Swim to success
A
scheme that aims to help youngsters become more confident in the water has led one youngster to National and European synchronised swimming success. Daisy Rushton, aged 15 from Blackpool, is one of hundreds of children who started her swimming journey by attending weekly Learn to Swim lessons at one of the Sport Blackpool Leisure Centres. Daisy is now a GB athlete after starting lessons at a young age at Moor Park Health and Leisure Centre. She is currently preparing for her next competition in the Synchro Nationals this November in Gloucester. She was first selected for the Senior and Junior GB Synchronised Swimming team in Sept 2017. In Feb 2018 she swam in the first senior competition of the season ‘the French Open’ at the age of 14. She has also competed in the Junior Europeans in Finland and the Junior Worlds in Budapest. Daisy has most recently competed for the Senior Europeans in Glasgow to represent GB, broadcasted live on the BBC. Blackpool’s Learn to Swim scheme aims to provide opportunities for children, young people and adults of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to develop a lifelong relationship with the water by providing high quality, professional swimming lessons in a fun, safe environment. Sport Blackpool’s philosophy of ‘progress through partnership’ ensures that not only do children, young people and adults have the opportunity to learn to swim but also the foundation skills required to progress and participate in a wide range of performance swimming programs and other aquatics activities. Daisy’s mother, Grace Rushton, said ‘The Learn to Swim sessions played an important role in Daisy’s success. The teachers on the scheme engaged Daisy right from the very start through fun activities, excellent teaching techniques and patience. They are extremely skilled at encouraging and supporting their students to help them to achieve their goals. Daisy’s current Team GB training and competing commitments now take her all over Europe but as soon as Daisy returns home there
is nothing she likes better than getting back in the pool training at Palatine Leisure Centre where she continues to be supported.’ Cllr Maria Kirkland, Cabinet Member for Leisure Services said ‘Daisy’s progress to becoming a GB athlete is fantastic. Through the Learn to Swim scheme she has worked hard and has had excellent support to help her reach where she is. We are all very proud of her. I encourage everyone to take part in Learn to Swim, it is a great opportunity to learn an important life skill as well as having fun.’ The Learn to Swim scheme runs at both Moor Park and Palatine leisure centres and is for all ages; from 4 months up to teenagers. No prior swimming assessment is needed; simply register for a Sport Blackpool leisure card and contact the centres to book. The scheme has a Learn2Swim portal that helps track a child’s progress throughout the course with instructors uploading assessments after the sessions. Block bookings and 1-1 sessions are available to offer support for less confident swimmers or help competent swimmers improve their technique. Flight delay compensation
ummer’s now over, and sadly there’s little you can do to repair a holiday ruined by flight delay or cancellation (eg from a strike like Ryanair’s) but many are entitled to up to £550 per person compensation. In fact this applies even for delays as far back as 2012.
This means you can claim a fixed amount of compensation if you meet certain criteria below, for flights going back to 2012. Here’s the key things to know.
1. It must be an ‘EU regulated
flight’. That means the flight must have left from an EU
This is not usually that difficult to do, I get positive feedback all the time, like Andy who tweeted me: ‘@MartinSLewis Quick thanks. Followed your advice. Just received 2 x £540 for flight delays Thomas Cook dealt with it very quickly too.’ And Amanda: ‘@MartinSLewis Thank you. Put in a claim to EasyJet for a flight delay of 3 1/2 hours and have just received £703 compensation 10 days later’.
2. It must have ARRIVED 3hrs+
late. It doesn’t matter how late you leave, it’s all about how late you arrived. So if you’re on a flight that takes off 4 hours late but arrives 2 hours 55minutes late – you’re not over the three hours needed to get compensation. And technically the time that counts is when the door opens to get off the plane.
3.
The easy rules apply to EU regulated flights. This is all about EU regulation 261/2004 – and it’s important to mention that rule in any complaint you make as it has specific rules (and that’s due to move into UK law once we leave the EU). 38
Manchester, you are entitled to compensation under this rule flying EU airlines like Virgin or KLM, but not on Air India.
airport (including all UK airports of course) or arrived at an EU airport (but in this case it must be an EU airline). So a delayed Manchester to Miami flight qualifies, regardless of the airline. Yet for Miami to
It must have been the airline’s fault to claim. So things such as bad weather, airport staff strikes or political problems doesn’t count, and you can’t claim compensation. However, things that are under the airlines control such as staffing problems, poor planning, and now even technical problems caused by not fixing regular wear and tear all count. Airlines will try and play fast and loose with this – so listen carefully and note down what you’re told is the

delay reason. If for example they’ve people working on the planes to fix them for hours but later claim bad weather – challenge it. Ryanair has already declared it won’t pay compensation for the strike by some of its Irish pilots in July as it says it wasn’t at fault. Yet the regulator, the Civil Aviation, has said you should get it. So if it rejects you in the first instance just carry on to the next stage (see below).
4. You are entitled to cash. Airlines
sometimes offer vouchers, so unless they’re offering more, you can formally say you want cash.
How do I put in a claim?
My full help including a totally free tool to do this is at www.mse.me/ flightdelays. But if you want to do it manually, first, write to the airline stating the details of your delay and asking for the compensation. If rejected, and that’s common, then depending on where you flew from and the airline you flew with, you can go to the relevant regulators for that country, or one of several new Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) schemes many airlines have signed up with. If your appeal is unsuccessful it’s still possible to go to court if you really want
to press your case, though then you need to weigh up if it’s worth it. And while I would always try and do this yourself for free up to this point – if you do decide to go to court then you may want to use someone like Bott & Co, a law firm that has been at the forefront of flight delay compensation, though it will take 25% of what you are due if you win as a fee.
How much compensation can I get? The amount you get is fixed solely on the flight length and delay time. So a 1,000km flight delayed by three hours is €250 (£220ish) per person, while a 4,000km flight delayed for five hours is €600 (£540ish) per person.

was
Then you’re entitled to the choice of a refund or a replacement flight – and that applies whether it is the airlines fault or not. However, if it was the airlines fault and it cancelled your flight within two weeks of departure, then you’re entitled to compensation on top if the arrival time of that flight is late. This is true even if you opt for a refund, as then you may still be due compensation if the

Is this fair on the airlines?
I don’t want to push unnecessary compensation culture. For someone on a £50 flight, only just three hours delayed, and had a fun time in the airport bar, it’s worth questioning whether it’s fair to push for £220, after all, it could push up all our air fares. Yet, if you’re a family with young kids who spent 24 hours in a smelly airport lounge with kids sleeping on the seats – then push for your rights. Everyone should make their own ethical choice of whether to take up the cudgels.

MITSUBISHI Eclipse Cross by Rob Auchterlonie
T
ALK about diving in at the deep end – Mitsubishi’s all new Eclipse Cross has a whole load of family SUVs waiting at the side of the road to nudge it off course. And of course, if they do, it’ll revel in it as Mitsubishi has long standing four wheel drive credentials. Every Eclipse Cross, irrespective of engine size, will have four driven wheels, so when the going gets tough, it’s capable of keeping on going. The company itself is now under the wing of Nissan which took a controlling interest in 2016, but this is still a car of Mitsubishi’s sole making. It’s probably the most upmarket compact car the company has made so far, and the neatest too, with its bold looks. It’s based on a smaller version of the platform from the larger Outlander, and carries similar dimensions to the class leading SEAT Ateca, albeit slightly larger. To many our car is an extension of our own persona, and despite what Governments may throw at the taxedto-the-hilt motorist in the future, our own personal transportation is something that has been highly prized 40
from the day the signature was added to the pass form by your driving examiner. So it’s important for manufacturers to do their homework and tick the boxes that will attract potential buyers. In this case Mitsubishi is gambling on the Eclipse Cross’s latent good looks to catch the eye. Visual attitude counts for a lot – only the Toyota CR-V arguably does it better. From launch all versions come with a new 1.5 litre direct injection turbocharged engine developing 161bhp and 250Nm, a top speed of 127mph and seemingly modest combined fuel economy of 40.4mpg. If you want a diesel, there will be a 148bhp 2.2 along sometime soon. The test car sampled here came with CVT, a transmission system that provides pretty smooth forward progress when mated to the 1.5 petrol unit and is efficient but in not exactly rewarding to drive. A six speed manual is also available. The engine never seems to be short of power and at

cruising speed isn’t going to interfere with your choice of on-board music. The interior errs on the conservative side, in contrast to its bold exterior. There’s a fair smattering of plastic mouldings, but you can have neatly stitched leather upholstery and a panoramic roof, and all the main instrumentation and switchgear are logically laid out. Plenty room up front for driver and passenger, not quite so in the rear where the sunroof impinges on headroom a bit. The rear bench has a slide and recline feature which frees up a bit more legroom. It’s a fairly well equipped car, with a Rockford Fosgate (yeh, I’d never heard of them either) premium speaker system, 360 degree parking camera, front and rear parking sensors on the list, but one glaring omission is the lack of sat nav on the seven inch
touch screen that takes pride of place atop the dash – the sort of extra you’d expect to find in a car costing near on £28,000. What you do get is Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard, so it’s possible to hook up maps through that from your smart phone. The screen works either from a trackpad on the centre console or by touching the screen. At various points in the past we’ve all metaphorically run to the light at the end of the tunnel only to get mown down by an oncoming train. That train being the constant stream of product from manufacturer after manufacturer being launched into the medium crossover sector. The choice is almost overwhelming but if it’s this type of car you need, then the Mitsubishi is worth considering. Prices start at £21,290.
FASTFACTS: Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross 4; £27,915; 1.5 litre direct injection turbo, 163ps, 250Nm; all wheel drive; CVT; top speed 127mph; fuel – urban34.4, extra urban 45.6, combined 40.4.

ormer Strictly Come Dancing finalist Jason Donovan, tells Ann all about Fame, Musicals, and why he is having a ‘midlife crisis’ on stage nightly.
Tell me more about you new tour ‘Midlife Crisis’
JD ‘I hit 50 and figured now would be a great time to tell all on stage, but it’s a great show and the questions from the audience are very direct, but again you are part of people’s history which is wonderful’
You were the biggest selling pop act of 1989, great memories?
JD ‘Of course, I was very young, so did not really appreciate it as you don’t when you’re that young, but looking back now, it was madness, but a great madness. I mean, what a feat to do that, but it was also down to great songs and having great producers in Stock, Aitken & Waterman.’
Strictly Come Dancing?
JD ‘Loved the show, and more so that I made it to Blackpool. I can’t begin to tell you the competition that there is to get there. It’s seen as the Mecca of the show and we all wanted it so I was very pleased that I got to dance on the Tower ballroom floor.’
What did you enjoy so much about Strictly Come Dancing?
JD ‘Well the outfits and what they did to turn you into a Prince, I mean some people don’t embrace it, but I sure did, and I liked what they did to me every week. I mean they make you look so good in that you really feel the character you’re dancing. It’s amazing really’
You are also turning to producing as well with Priscilla
JD ‘I have starred in the show many times, but when they offered me the chance to produce I jumped at it because knowing the show, I know what I believe the audience want to see, so it’s a very exciting time’
What advice would you give to others starting out?
JD ‘Work hard and grab the opportunities, because you will learn something from them and above all, keep working hard because a little rejection does us all good from time to time and makes you work harder’ 42
Especially for Blackpool
Ann Montini meets Musical star and 80s pop icon Jason Donovan
Priscilla Queen of the Desert is coming to Blackpool next year , what can fans expect? JD ‘It is Ann, well done. It’s at the Winter Gardens from the 21st to 26th October in 2019 and we want to see everyone there, ready to party and sing along. We want them to experience a wonderful night out
You appear to love Blackpool and came here last with the Hit Factory show – what is the appeal? JD ‘I do you know, and the appeal is the town is known all over the world as a party capital and to be asked to appear here is always an honour. I do think you have a vibrant entertainment scene, with visitors and locals really embracing it all – wonderful place’
Finally can we mention your other mega hit show ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’. Is it true you kept the famous coat, and still have it today? I do have it, but how do you know about that? Well I can’t wear it out and about can I, but yes on the final night I just slipped off home wearing it, and as of, yet no one has asked for it back, so I am happy about that’ Find out more about Jason at www.jasondonovan.com

On the road again
C
llr Mark Smith, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Enterprise and Economic Development was joined by Rob Green, Head of Enterprise Zones at Blackpool Council in August at Blackpool Airport Enterprise Zone, to mark the start of the first phase of redevelopment. Following the erection of marketing boards that prominently feature at different locations surrounding the site, the Enterprise Zone Delivery Team have appointed a specialist engineering and environmental design consultancy, BWB Consulting, to carry out preliminary transport highway assessments, as part of the first stage of planning application process for the new eastern access road and the re-modelling of the adjacent Common Edge Road Playing Fields. The comprehensive traffic assessment will include traffic counts at key junctions throughout the locality, provide initial concept designs for the road layout, and address any transport issues, including parking, walking and cycling elements associated with future development and the impact of jobs growth over the next 23 years. The new eastern road would provide a much needed second access point to the Enterprise Zone and help to ease congestion during peak commuter hours in the local area on Squires Gate Lane, Common Edge Road and surrounding feeder routes. It is projected that the new eastern access road would allow Blackpool Council, the accountable body for the Enterprise Zone, to unlock land available for development by 2020. Cllr Mark Smith said, ‘It is great to see the traffic assessment underway as it’s a crucial first step towards securing planning permission and releasing much needed development land. There is a high local

demand for more quality employment space and Blackpool Council are keen to unlock development plots to meet this need. We want local businesses to stay on the Fylde Coast and create sustainable jobs for the local community and not be forced to look elsewhere for suitable premises to meet their growth requirements.’ Rob Green, Head of Enterprise Zones said, ‘Since the marketing boards were erected, the Enterprise Zone team has seen an upsurge in property and land enquiries for the site which is very encouraging for the development and testimony that the delivery of the Masterplan is moving in the right direction to provide modern, quality, employment solutions.’ Since being granted Enterprise Zone status in April 2016, the Enterprise Zone has already attracted over 50 businesses that have located to the area and created to date more than 700 jobs. Blackpool Council recently allocated £28.8m of funding for an initial three year period to deliver essential infrastructure to help secure early investment in the site, kick start development, build momentum and reinforce market confidence. It is projected that over the next 23 years the 144 hectare site will help to transform the Blackpool and Fylde Coast’s economic base with over £300m private investment, will attract up to 5,000 new jobs supported by new infrastructure, 140 new businesses on site by 2030 and develop, convert or re-purpose 260,000 sq m of potential floor space. The Enterprise Zone team now are taking all enquiries for available property and land on Freephone 0808 1644922 or register interest at www.blackpoolez.com
