What is Sonos?

The more rooms, the better.

Sonos is the wireless home sound system that fills as many rooms as you want with great-sounding music, movies and TV. Stream via WiFi. Play whatever you’re craving. And amp up every moment with intense, pulse-pounding sound.

Your life is not limited to one room, so why is your music? The real power of a Sonos system kicks in when you add more speakers. Now you’re controlling different music in different rooms. Or grouping all your speakers together to blast one big jam to every room at once. Since everything we build works together wirelessly, it’s easy to fill your whole home with music, one room at a time. (No wonder most Sonos homes have more than one speaker.)

One app. Complete music control. The Sonos app helps you quickly search through all your services to track down your favourite music, play it and adjust the volume in different rooms throughout the home. You don’t even have to be in the same room as a speaker. And if your friends have the Sonos app, they can do the same.

Hazel beat arthritis with collagen Sprightly septuagenarian Hazel Hallatt had always enjoyed an active lifestyle, until the onset of osteoarthritis threatened to curtail her walking, swimming, golf and yoga. “The arthritis flared up a decade ago, affecting my hands, knees and back. My mobility was restricted and I was in a lot of pain,” said Hazel, 75. “I feared my days of exercise were over.” Hazel turned to Collagen Plus, a natural collagen supplement and found an immediate and remarkable upturn. “Collagen Plus has turned my life around. I am so active, any discomfort is minimal and my doctor has been amazed by both my mobility levels and how the osteoarthritis is being managed.”

Gardening (continued) Best of the bunch - Liriope

Better known as lilyturf, this lateflowering evergreen looks a bit like a giant grape hyacinth, with its narrow, strap-shaped evergreen leaves and spikes of knobbly lilac flowers which bloom from September to November. It makes good ground-cover under shrubs or can be used as edging in the herbaceous border, but it is invasive so watch where you plant it and limit its spread by lifting and dividing the clumps every few years. The most common type is L muscari, which grows to around 30cm. Most varieties are mauve or violet, but you can get the white variety ‘Monroe White’ and another with gold-splashed leaves, ‘John Burch’. The plants will thrive in sun or light shade in any lime-free garden soil.

Good enough to eat - Peaches

To get any sort of crop, you really need to grow peaches in the warmest conditions you can, against a south-facing wall that will retain the heat by day and release it at night. Have a go at fan-training your tree in an enclosed area that will shelter the plant from strong winds. Peach trees need to be planted in rich, fertile, well-drained soil with plenty of added organic matter. You’ll need to prepare the soil carefully at the base of the wall and, if fan-training, supply regular support with stout canes attached to the wall in a fan shape, one for each branch of the tree. In spring and summer, the branches will produce sideshoots from which the fruit will grow, so don’t touch those. Don’t expect any fruit from a newly-planted tree until its second or third summer. Tie the branches in regularly to their supports as they grow. In spring, give the tree a good mulch and in late April feed it with general purpose fertiliser. Keep it well-watered immediately after planting, until established, and continue to water it well in dry spells, particularly when it’s carrying fruit.

What to do this month • Create a new compost heap or invest in a compost bin to house all that autumn debris.

• Scarify and aerate established lawns

to reduce compaction and top dress with a mixture of sieved garden soil and sharp sand.

• Continue to thin out aquatic plants,

leaving them by the side of the pond for a few days to allow any wildlife to escape.

• Relocate evergreen shrubs while the soil is still relatively warm.

• Stop feeding shrubs and trees in containers, as new soft growth is likely to be damaged in winter.

• Cut down and divide perennials including sedums, hostas and phlox.

• Pot up prepared hyacinths and narcissi for flowers at Christmas.

• Continue to plant narcissi but leave tulips until October.

• Sow

hardy annuals including cornflowers, poached-egg plants and poppies outside now for flowering next year.

• Harvest the last marrows and courgettes and lift maincrop potatoes.

Good varieties of peach include ‘Peregrine’, which ripens from mid to late August, and ‘Rochester’.

• Dig over heavy clay soil before the

• Sow parsley and chervil for use in late winter and early spring.

• Pick apples and pears as they ripen.

Jekyll’s Fierce Panda Release

J

ekyll are four alt.rock kids from Blackpool, England. They consist of Joel Foster (vocals/ guitar), Lewis Armistead (bass), Liam Singleton (drums) and Mike Spence (guitar). The scowlingly sultry ‘Plan A’ is their first single on esteemed indie record label Fierce Panda, and is taken from their recently released ‘Jekyll’ EP. It’s a fruitily powerful sound, too: recorded at Sugar House Studios (Pale Waves, Viola Beach), Plan A is more becalmed than some of their other Jekyll songs with it’s gently lunging guitars and fragrant falsetto, but you can still smell the frustration, as you may or may not expect from a band known for its melancholic soundscapes, dynamic mood shifts and visceral intensity. ‘Plan A’ is about feeling stagnant and directionless in your life and not knowing how to fix it,’ muse Jekyll. ‘It’s about being faced with an impossible dilemma (having two Plan As) and being torn apart by it. The song is about indecision.’ Ironically enough there was no indecision on the part of Fierce Panda who saw Jekyll play not once but twice at The Great Escape Festival (they stood in exactly the same spot during both sets to psych them out. Frankly, they didn’t even notice), and were so smitten by a complex sound likened to grown-ups running from Radiohead to Editors they did the deal there and then by the sea. Barely a fortnight later the Jekyll release plans were being laid bare: hot on the heels of ‘Plan A’ the ‘Jekyll’ EP features

select previous releases including ‘Wounds’, which opened up various excellent doors to them from BBC Introducing Lancashire to East Street Tap in Brighton. Along the way there have been festival appearances at Sheffield’s Tramlines, Liverpool’s Threshold, South Yorkshire’s Blackfest, Manchester’s Sonder Fest, Lancaster Music Festival, The International Pop Overthrow Festival and Blackpool’s Rebellion Punk Fest, as well as support slots with Vukovi, October Drift, Racing Glaciers, Demob Happy, The Membranes, Glass Caves and The Tapestry. The ‘Jekyll’ EP is also the first release as part of the Second Fierce Panda EP Club wherein six new bands will each release an EP over the course of the next year. The Jekyll EP is out on all streaming and digital services nownow. Find out more about Jekyll and get their music at www.jekyllofficial.co.uk or www.fiercepanda.co.uk

How we’re helping…

borrowing in retirement Traditionally, most people would have paid their mortgage off by the time they’d retired. In fact, the bank would probably have insisted on it. Times change though, and if you’re retired and own your own home, a mortgage is one way of releasing some of the money tied up in your property to help yourself or your family. Whether it’s to undertake home improvements, help your children with a deposit for their first home or simply to enjoy your retirement a little more, age shouldn’t be an obstacle to borrowing money.

A Suffragette City

A

lthough the theme for this year’s Gala was Disney, Pilling Lane Women’s Institute entered the Gala as Suffragettes, which fitted in with the scene from Mary Poppins and the chorus from the Suffragettes. Fourteen members dressed up in Edwardian outfits and decorated hats with the green, purple and white colours of the Suffragettes, and very prominently wore ‘Votes for Women’ sashes, three of the ladies are in their eighties, a mean feat for these ladies as the route was over three miles long and took two hours. As To the best of their knowledge Pilling Lane WI have never entered the Gala and it was their 84th birthday this year, although they had helped serving teas and more at previous years events. The WI were absolutely ecstatic to win two 1st prizes and be awarded the new ‘Vivienne Taylor Memorial Cup’, the first prizes were

Penny Drabble, Janette Prior, Marie Marshall, Janet Astley, Chris White, Anne Bewes, Eva Cocker, Anne Ingham and Anita Jackson, behind are Barbara Lancashire, Carol Molyneux, Joan Haworth, Barbara Kay and June Beesely

for Best Adult Fancy Dress and Overall Best Adult Fancy Dress, the trophy was for the Overall category, they could not believe it and were are so proud to have done it. They can’t stop talking about it! Achieving this has given the WI a real boost, watch this space for next year. Wyre-d open space

D

iscover Wyre during this year’s Heritage Open Days, this year in Wyre we have a number of walks, talks and tours and the chance to go inside some of our beautiful buildings. This year, there’s lots to enjoy in Wyre during Heritage Open Days. From guided walks to unique tours and activities, you can explore some of the borough’s most historical and iconic buildings and beautiful open spaces. Every year in September, places across the country throw open their doors to celebrate their heritage, community and history. It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – and it’s all free! Wyre Council is taking part in the occasion from Thursday 13th to Sunday 16th September by hosting a range of events and activities for all ages to enjoy. Highlights include tours of historic locations such at The Mount, Marine Hall, Rossall Point Tower, Marsh Mill, the Civic Centre, The Lower Lighthouse, Euston Park Gardens and Garstang Quaker Meeting House. 38

There are also guided walks around Garstang, Poulton, Fleetwood Cemetery, Memorial Park, Skippool, Bleasdale and Rossall Point. Councillor Lynne Bowen, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Health and Community Engagement at Wyre Council comments, “Heritage Open Days is a really special time as it gives people the opportunity to learn more about the history of where we live. We may pass these buildings regularly but not have the opportunity to actually go inside. We are lucky to have lots of historical venues, parks and towns here in Wyre and I’d encourage everyone to discover something new about the wonderful borough that live in.” Please note opening dates and times vary for each venue and event. For full details take a look at our Heritage Open Day guide available at www.wyre.gov. uk/heritageopendays

Money matters with Martin Lewis

A drugs bust - stop letting big pharmaceuticals rip you off!

H

arry Potter’s got nowt on the pharmaceutical industry. It’s full of real wizards, both those who make drugs that help, and the marketeers whose raft of tricks to persuade us there’s hidden magic in their brands. Drug companies spend millions promoting ‘only-use-the-nameyou-know’ messages... but it’s often marketing baloney, balderdash and any other ‘b’ words you can think of. Worse still, it hits people’s pockets unnecessarily, many are paying six times over the odds. Savings can even be possible by buying IDENTICAL doppelganger pills, just in different packaging. So it’s time

40

for a drugs bust. Here’s my pill-bypill guide to not getting suckered into buying expensive medications.

1. Look at the active ingredient – that’s what matters. It’s widely known that it’s the medicine’s ‘active’ ingredient that does the business. So you can often save by having a quick look on the pack to see what that is, and buying the same generic version rather than the branded version for less (though if you’ve certain allergies check the other ingredients too – and it may lack the sugar coating). For example, standard 200mg Nurofen costs around £1.90 (16 tablets), yet you can get ibuprofen

- the same active ingredient - for as little as 30p in Asda (also 16 tablets). Alternatively, Panadol (500mg of Paracetamol) is £1.65 for 16 tablets, but you can get the same 500mg of standard paracetamol in Sainsbury’s for 40p (16 tablets).

2. Take it a step further by checking the PL code – you’ll be surprised. While the active ingredient is what does the business, there can be other differences such as delivery mechanism for quick delivery. Even then, often inside the packaging tablets are INDENTICAL– not just the same active ingredient. On the side of the pack you’ll see a product number (PL) – this

ADVERTISE - Book Online www.link-mag.co.uk 0800 970 7687 or sales@link-mag.co.uk

Written by Martin lewis twitter@martinlewis is a unique licence number given exclusively to a particular drug made by a particular manufacturer (eg, PL 12063/0104 is a cold and flu remedy). If two have the same number, it’s the exact same product. It has the same active ingredient AND the same formulation. For example Beechams Ultra All In One Hot Lemon Menthol Powder (10 sachets) is currently £4.99 in Boots, but is £1.85 for Wilko’s own Flu Max All In One (10 sachets) and they both have the same active ingredients (paracetamol, phenylephrine and guaifenesin) and check the side of the pack and you’ll see the same PL code PL 12063/0104. This happens right across the board. So when in the pharmacist, just take a look and check you’re not paying just for shinier packaging.

3. Targeted pain killers are often just spin.

When you see a painkiller is targeted at “headaches”, “period pain relief” or “back pain” on the box – they’re hoping that we’ll think: “There must be something in it – I’m in pain, what’s a few extra quid to make sure its targeted, better be safe than sorry eh?” And of course it works. It’s a clever way of getting you to buy a branded product rather than the cheaper generic. Yet often there’s little in it. Check the active ingredient and the PL code. For example, Panadol Extra Advance and Panadol Period Pain, both have the same 500mg of paracetamol, as the active ingredient, and both have PL number 44673/0078 – they’re the same thing, just different packet.

You can slash the cost of anti-histamine tablets by again looking for the active ingredient, and going for the nonbranded tablets rather than the branded ones. The Piriteze brand (active ingredient cetirizine hydrochloride) and Clarityn (active ingredient loratadine) both are sold for around £7 for a pack of 30. Yet generic versions in supermarkets and pharmacies can be less than £2. Or go online to www.pharmacyfirst. co.uk (using the code ‘freedelivery’) and you can get four packs of cetirizine hydrochloride for £2.79 or six packs of loratadine tablets for £4.79. Online pharmacies selling medicines in the UK must by law display the European common logo on every page of their website - a green logo which when clicked will link to the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency’s register of authorised online pharmacies. Look out for the voluntary ‘registered pharmacy’ logo too. Also check the use-by date on the packet – some online pharmacies are cheaper because they are flogging medicine with a short lifespan.

5. English prescription tricks

If you’re prescribed common medication such as painkillers or dermatology creams, it’s cheaper to buy them that way rather than spend £8.80 on a prescription (if you need to pay it). And for those who use prescriptions regularly, you can get a prepayment

Martin Lewis

certificate – it’s a bit like a prescription season ticket and can mean big savings. A three-month one costs £29.10 and a year’s costs £104 – and once you’ve got it, it covers all your prescriptions in that time. As a rule of thumb, they win if you use more than one prescription a month. Plus if you already paid for prescriptions before you get it, you can backdate it up to a month, and reclaim the money back. Martin Lewis is the Founder and Chair of MoneySavingExpert. com. To join the 13 million people who get his free Money Tips weekly email, go to www. moneysavingexpert. com/latesttip.

This isn’t breaking a rule, medicines are allowed to have ‘informative’ names on the packet, to ‘help you choose the product you need’, but be vigilant.

4. Hay fever savings nothing to sneeze at.

If only tonight we could sleep

D

o you drop off the moment your head hits the pillow, or do you toss and turn for ages? If you struggle to fall asleep or keep waking up at night, you’ll feel groggy when the morning comes too soon. Good quality sleep, especially deep sleep, is crucial to our health and wellbeing - without it the world can be a miserable place. Here are a few tips for a good night’s sleep:

Daylight early in the day

Exposing your body (especially the retinas in your eyes) to daylight in the morning helps our body clock and hormone release, promoting good sleep at night. Even on an overcast day the amount of light 42

is many times stronger than any lightbulb can deliver, so get outside every day for at least a few minutes.

seven days a week, and if you have a late night, avoid sleeping in for more than an hour or two.

Get a workout

Clear your mind

When you come home tired after a long day, the sofa and the remote control may seem very appealing, but exercise is better. You don’t need a gruelling workout, just something physical to get your blood moving. Whether you do a bit of weight training or a spot of gardening, it will clear out the adrenalin from your system and you’ll sleep better.

Routine

Sleep thrives on routine, and good sleep hygiene becomes more important as we get older. Try to go to bed and wake at the same time

One of the most common things that keep us awake at night is suddenly remembering all those millions of things we need to do tomorrow. If you cannot stop your mind from making mental todo lists when you should be sleeping, keep a notepad by your bedside so you can write yourself a note and let it go. Nighttime worrying can be addressed by spending a few minutes before bed writing them down in a journal. This will help your mind process the things that are bothering you. Other helpful

ADVERTISE - Book Online www.link-mag.co.uk 0800 970 7687 or sales@link-mag.co.uk

methods include meditation, yoga, listening to relaxing music or reading a book.

Silence

You have heard it all before - the TV belongs in the living room. Leave the laptop on your desk in the office, and keep the iPad and phone away from the bedroom. If you are using your phone as an alarm, switch it to flight mode at night. Avoid checking emails after a certain hour, and if you really must stare at your phone at night, dim the screen brightness and set it into Night Shift mode.

You probably won’t be able to reroute traffic, stop the neighbour’s dog barking, or move to the Outer Hebrides, but you might be surprised by how much difference earplugs can make. They muffle the outside sounds just enough so that traffic sounds a little more ‘far away’ and the sudden acceleration of cars will stop stirring you up at night. This may be just enough to help you reach deep sleep sooner and spend more time in deep sleep, leading to a more refreshed you in the morning. Admittedly, earplugs take some getting used to and they may not be for everyone but they are worth a try. If you can spend a few hundred pounds, have your bedroom window replaced - the technology has improved significantly and the prices have become more affordable.

Darkness

Snoring

Avoid stimulants

If consumed late in the day, caffeine, chocolate and large meals can disrupt your sleep even if you fall asleep easily. A glass of milk or camomile tea are better alternatives.

Ban technology from the bedroom

Get blackout curtains for your bedroom window or attach blackout linings on the underside of your existing curtains - this low cost investment can have a big impact. It also helps if you use softer, dimmer lights in the evenings to cooperate with your melatonin release.

If it is snoring that shatters your night’s silence, then earplugs won’t be much help. Whether you dispatch the snoring party to the sofa (or the shed), snoring is often a sign of other trouble that’s worth addressing.

The culprit may be alcohol consumption - as alcohol is a muscle relaxant, it can relax the throat muscles to the point of snoring. Losing weight can also help because even shedding a few pounds may reduce the amount of fat around the neck and chin that weighs down on the throat when we lie down, obstructing breathing. Sleep apnoea is a serious condition that needs a doctor’s attention due to the lack of oxygen and the consequences this can have, so if you suspect you or your loved one struggles to breathe at night, make an appointment with your GP. On the other hand, where snoring is caused by blocked nasal passages due to allergies or dry air, nasal sprays, air humidifiers and air purifiers can be an easy solution - the pricier models are now completely silent, so they can be left on all night. Changing the sleeping position may help too, and one way this can be achieved is by sewing a tennis ball into the back of the pyjama top (seriously!). This stops the snorer from rolling onto their back, the most common position when snoring occurs. Unfortunately, there are no statistics available yet on the success rate of this technique, or its relation to divorce rates!

NINE LIVES CAT RESCUE We are a small cat rescue located in Blackpool. All our cats are in foster care until they are rehomed. We have a policy to neuter all cats (when old enough) before rehoming. Prior to rehoming we carry out home checks of all prospective new owners and foster carers and we ask for an adoption donation of around £35 (adult cat) £40 (kitten). The rescue is run by Linda Cameron Davies with the support of volunteers and foster carers.
