EMPTY FOR WINTER? With winter just around the corner now is the ideal time to start thinking about your property if it is vacant. Maybe you have an empty property on the sales market or you’re a landlord with a current tenancy that is coming to an end, whatever your circumstance the last thing you want to have to do is spend time protecting and constantly checking the house over the festive period. Several things you can do to protect an empty home include; checking your boiler and leaving the heating ticking over which will help reduce the risk of freezing, making sure that your pipes are lagged to avoid them freezing, thawing and eventually bursting, checking doors and windows for gaps and make sure that they are sealed in order to block any draughts, checking your stop tap to ensure you know it is working and can be turned off quickly in the event of a leak and clearing your gutters as blocked guttering can cause water to leak into the roof or down walls. If your property is vacant it may be a good idea to drain the system down and switch the water off at the stop tap. If you would rather avoid the hassle of all this, especially if you live away from the property then why not think about letting?

RECIPE
As the bleak winter weather looms, seek solace in this warming seasonal soup – quick, delicious and packed with healthy ingredients!
Level of difficulty: Easy Preparation time: 20 minutes
Ingredients 1 onion, chopped finely 1tbsp olive oil 1kg broccoli, roughly chopped 1 clove of garlic, chopped finely 500ml vegetable or chicken stock 200ml half fat sour cream 150g Iberico ham Pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Preparation 1.Sauté the onion in a large saucepan over a medium heat with a tablespoon of olive oil for about 6-8 minutes until soft. Add the garlic and sauté for another 2-3 minutes. Put 3 or 4 broccoli florets to one side for decoration; add the rest to the saucepan and cook for a further 2 minutes. Pour the chicken stock into the pan and simmer until the broccoli is tender. 2.Take the pan off the heat and put everything into a blender along with the sour cream, and salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. 3.Cook the ham over a moderate heat until crisp and then use to garnish the cream. You can also use some uncooked ham to combine different textures.

RECIPE
With jam season now well under way, here’s a delicious and unusual alternative to the traditional fruit recipe sweet potato and Ginger jam. A perfect accompaniment for both sweet and savoury dishes, sweet potato jam tastes delicious spread over a slice of wholemeal bread or when served with an after dinner cheese board. What’s more sweet potatoes are packed full of vitamin A and a good source of potassium, fibre and vitamin C, and unlike ordinary potatoes counts toward one of the five-a-day.
Ingredients 250g Sweet potatoes 250g Sugar 50g Grated fresh ginger
Preparation 1. Peel the sweet potatoes, place in a pan with some water and boil until soft. 2. Drain the sweet potatoes and mash. 3. Weigh the sweet potatoes and place in a heavy based pan with an equal quantity of sugar. 4. Place on medium heat and bring to the boil stirring occasionally, add the ginger to taste, reduce the heat to a gentle simmer and cook for at least ten minutes. Carry on cooking until the desired consistency has been reached. 5. Sterilise some jam jars by boiling them in water. 6. Pour the hot jam into the hot jam jars. 7. Leave to cool.

You can also flavour the jam with lemon or orange zest or try adding a little vanilla. Unlike most jams, sweet potato jam does not have a specific setting point, so you can make it as thick as you like. The more you cook the jam the denser it will become. It is worthwhile remembering that the jam will keep for a number of months so you can make it in reasonably large batches.

Events this month • The Fairfield Association Flora Nature Reserve Flora is part of the Morecambe Bay Nature Improvement Area. It extends Fauna to create a 47 acre area close to the centre of Lancaster accessible to walkers, yet providing an environment where wildlife can flourish, through conservation and traditional farming practice. The programme is an opportunity for local people to learn more about this exciting development. From Sunday 1st December we will be having various bands and choirs in store to entertain us with Christmas songs and carols. As well as this the staff and colleagues will be enjoying themselves by holding tombolas, raffles, bingo and various games over the weeks running up to Christmas as well as the usual dressing up, we also have a group of young men who hail from the Lancaster Priory and who come in to sing for us each year and are truly amazing. The aim of all this besides having fun will be to make funds for the various organisations and schools as well as hopefully, to swell the coffers of our charity of the year, The Neuro Drop in Centre. The Centre is a fairly new charity who provide help and support to anyone with a neurological condition. They are based at Stone Row Head in Lancaster and are a fantastic support to all who need them. Everything kicks off on Sunday 1st December with Lancaster City Brass. See you there. • Festive Fun Run Friday December 27th at 11am will see the start of the annual Christmas Festive Fun Run from the Lancaster & Morecambe AC club house on the athletics track at Salt Ayre Sports Centre, near Lancaster. It is not too early to start thinking about registering for this popular event. It is aimed at families and fun runners as well as more regular competitors, and there will be a festive atmosphere. Entries are only £3, with an extra £1 for registrations on the day. The route is flat and around 4k. This year the race is supported by The Runners Centre in Lancaster - the largest local specialist running shop, Sainsburys, McDonalds, Morrisons, Preston FC, Blackburn Rovers FC, Lancaster University Sports Centre, Sandpiper Club at Lancaster House Hotel; Barton Grange and Tesco. There will be medals for all finishers as well as a large number of spot prizes, and a presentation ceremony.
