Lancaster News
‘Take Monday Off’ Successful City Music Festival creates its own unofficial Bank Holiday Responding to the record breaking attendance figures of the 2013 Lancaster Music Festival this year’s festival is promoting its own special “Unofficial Bank Holiday” with the mantra “Take Monday Off” to accommodate the nearly 200 acts covering numerous genres performing at over 40 city centre and University venues on the long weekend of Oct. 9-13th, 2014. Lancaster Music Festival has decided to create their own unofficial Bank Holiday. When asked for the thinking behind this idea, festival coordinator Ben Ruth responded ‘people kept asking us why we didn’t put the music festival on a Bank Holiday weekend so we could fit more shows in. Well, last year we warned all those involved in the festival production to take Monday off anyway only to realise a lot of festival goers did the same. That led to the realisation that we could create our own long weekend in Lancaster simply by announcing it. So that’s what we’re doing. Only we’ve thrown in Thursday as well.’ Almost all of the shows are free and all the city venues are within easy walking distance of each other while a regular bus service connects with Lancaster University. It will be a long and packed weekend of around 200 top notch local and global musical talent at over 40 locations with new acts arriving and proven favourites returning to a city which has always welcomed and nurtured live music. Based on the festival successes of the last five years this will be Lancaster’s sixth and biggest music festival so far with new venues including the city’s iconic 1000 year old Castle, the town’s historic squares, late closing bars and clubs and greater involvement of Lancaster University (and a bank that will in fact be open). From folk, jazz, blues, soul, funk, grunge, punk, pop to classical, avant garde and even bicycle powered music on the back of a beer dray we expect everyone to find outstanding music that they will enjoy in a lively and festive atmosphere. Most of the music will be provided by the outstanding talent and variety of acts that perform in the Lancaster district, for example, Get Carter Experience with Madness ex-keyboardist

James Mackie, singer songwriter loop sensation Alex Hulme, beatboxer Nathan Loopz, reggae explosion Jeremy Ferrari, Celtic fiddle virtuosity from Hard Times, mod punk boogaloo mayhem from the Convulsions and award winning Latin guitarist Howard Haigh. There will also be acts from as far away as Austria, Canada, USA, and from all over the UK (even Yorkshire). The full calendar of events will be available after August 31st. The festival will also host street theatre, mini ale festivals and plenty of food both in the venues and the market stalls. The event is family friendly during the day and evening with adults being able to enjoy live music through the wee hours with at least one venue open 24 hours and another two licensed to 4am. A few of the events are ticketed and tickets can be obtained after August 31st online from the festival website (www.lancastermusicfestival. com/tickets.php), at Lancaster’s Visitor Information Centre and the venues themselves. The 64 page festival brochures will be produced by @Lancaster Magazine and are available from September 15th for £1 from participating venues and the Lancaster and Morecambe Visitor Information Centres. Further info: info@lancastermusicfestival.com or www.lancastermusicfestival.com Please note: Music applications for the festival ended on July 1st. The festival is still accepting sponsorship and advertising up until August 31st. Anyone interested in advertising in the music festival brochure, radio airtime and online media can get in touch with the festival coordinator Ben Ruth at info@lancastermusicfestival.com.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Branch Manager Roger Bonnick feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many
tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Lancaster, Morecambe & Carnforth areas and Roger is finding that his approach is a major factor
in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,
which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Roger a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Aries
(Mar 21st - Apr 20th) Believe it or not you’re going to be most ardent about your working life this month, and getting the job done. Have you been thinking about getting fit? This doesn’t have to drab or dreary, because Uranus in your sign compels you to be inventive and inspired, and so if anyone can make salads look exciting, it’s you.
Taurus
(Apr 21st - May 21st) You’re about as far removed from the steady-eddie textbook Taurus as you can get this month. The sun is in the most playful part of the chart you see, and so as far as you’re concerned, responsibility is a tragedy. Of course you can’t quit the rat race completely, but what you could do is channel this energy into reconnecting with loved ones, and indulge your fun, carefree side.
Gemini
(May 22nd - Jun 21st) Home comforts are a lot more important to you this month, as is driving in the slow lane for a while, so that you can stop and smell the roses. This helps you regroup by catching up on sleep if you’ve been rather frazzled, and strengthen family ties. This is also a nostalgic time for you Gemini, not something we readily associate with your sign, so any such bouts might very well catch you on the hop.
Cancer
(Jun 22nd - Jul 23rd) The Virgo sun re-awakens your interest in all activity that is close to home. Perhaps you chose to overlook some of this because it was either a hot potato or too finicky. What were hot topics have now cooled down enough for you to handle, and with this comes a responsibility that you don’t seem all that bothered about shouldering. This fixer mentality of yours is very attractive to others.
Leo
(Jul 24th - Aug 23rd) Money holds more allure for you now, and it’s not just cold, hard cash, but the wider benefits that it can bring you, like comfort and security. Two major Leo considerations. Whether you’re a tomcat on the prowl or simply living it up with your lover or friends, the flipside of this coin involves you pushing the boat out as far as you can. But will finance stretch as far for you?
Virgo
(Aug 24th - Sep 23rd) Stand by for action as they say, and welcome to your strongest month, as you harness the power of the sun in your sign. You’re like a walking, talking solar panel absorbing all the sun’s positive rays and reflecting back this light on all the people you come into contact with. Someone intrigues you, and if they’re your opposite in many ways, perhaps he or she is in your life for a reason.
Libra
(Sep 24th - Oct 23rd) You’ve got to be 100 per cent comfortable with the company you keep this month, so you’ll naturally attract like-minded people into your life. Quiet time at home is also important, but you won’t be able to avoid the pull of the social scene completely, mainly because it won’t be long before the hole left by your absence becomes so big that others start falling into it. Love enters your life with a whisper.
Scorpio
(Oct 24th - Nov 22nd) Applying undue pressure isn’t really ever the trick with you, yet someone just doesn’t appear to be able to comprehend this as the month begins. You’re generally looking for more evolved company, and the type of people who can be easy-going and stimulating at the same time. If you’ve been harbouring a secret ambition, you could possibly move it closer towards materialising before the month is out.
Advertise your business call 0800 970 7687 or email info@link-mag.co.uk
Sagittarius
(Nov 23rd - Dec 21st) You’re the top of the heap this month, the Big Cheese. This is because the sun is beaming down its most powerful rays on you before the rest of the zodiac, and this kind of elevated status gives you a head start on the rest of us. Use this power wisely, because you have tremendous influential sway right now, and you’re also transmitting all the right signals for a potential new love interest.
Capricorn
(Dec 22nd - Jan 20th) Wouldn’t you just love to feel the sun on your back and the sand between your toes? The cosmos allows you plenty of right to roam this month so making travel arrangements looks likely. If you don’t arrange something, the likelihood is that somebody else will. Do you have an up-to-date passport? This is also the time when you’re seen as wise, so expect more bending of your ear than normal.
Aquarius
(Jan 21st - Feb 19th) Extra resilience will be called for should you get any form of knockback or rejection this month, because you’re feeling a lot more sensitive all in all. In fact, and if you listen very carefully, you can hear the sound of eggshells crunching beneath the feet of your loved ones as they pick up on this. The great opportunity this presents for you is the ability to get closer to someone, and not to spread yourself too thinly, as true contentment lies in one soul-union.
Pisces
(Feb 20th - Mar 20th) The sun in your opposite sign reflects well on you, and opens up new perspectives in your life. This helps you to walk a mile or two in somebody else’s shoes, and this is fantastic for reinventing a relationship. If you’re looking for love, then you will attract what you are projecting, so positive thoughts all the way please Pisces. Apply this rule and you’ll land yourself a real catch!

Get your grown-ups
Growing By Hannah Stephenson
G
TV gardening guru David Domoney is calling on all schools to ‘get their grown-ups growing’ as part of a nationwide event organised by the Royal Horticultural Society, to be held across October.
et Your Grown-ups Growing forms part of the RHS’s Campaign for School Gardening, - a national initiative that encourages schools to create gardens, teach the skills of growing and in turn enable their pupils to learn outside the classroom. Each October schools are invited to hold a Grown-ups Growing event so they can involve their local community to help develop the school garden. Grandparents, parents, carers and friends are invited to help. Activities suggested for event organisers include tool swaps, taste tests of produce grown in schools or alternatively locallygrown fruit and veg, a range of gardening classes and even a mini garden show. Schools with gardens can encourage adults within the community to help develop new areas such as a wildlife garden or help construct raised beds. A Get Your Grown-ups Growing event can also see adults passing on their gardening experience to children by helping them sow seeds, plant trees and assist in weeding.
14
For schools without gardens it’s the ideal opportunity to involve adults in the community from the beginning to establish some form of gardening facility in the school. For both types of schools the event can even be used to raise funds through plant sales and raffles. Entering its fifth year, Get Your Grown-ups Growing has developed from a small pilot project based in Yorkshire to a national success. Of the schools that held an event last year, 74% said it had increased their children’s interest in gardening, while more than half reported an increase in adult support and adult interest in gardening. Jacky Chave, RHS strategic schools manager, says: “Having a school garden is a fantastic asset for teachers and pupils as it provides a multitude of learning opportunities, but we know it can take a lot of hard work to maintain. “By involving parents and other local adults, through an event like Get Your Grown-ups Growing, we hope that school gardens will be looked after all year round and enthusiasm for gardening and growing will spread beyond the school gates and into children’s homes.”
The RHS hopes to see 2,000 schools register for this year’s Get Your Grown-ups Growing event. All registered schools will be entered into a free prize draw to win garden tools and materials. Schools which register will receive a free support pack including seeds, event ideas, information templates, stickers and more. Each school can choose any date in October to hold its event and organise activities to suit its requirements.
To register: Schools must sign up to the RHS Campaign for School Gardening via
www.rhs.org.uk/gygg
and click on the ‘Get Your Grown-ups Growing’ button on the home page.

Lancaster Race For Life Turns Passion Into Progress THOUSANDS of women united at the Lancaster University on Sunday with one mission in mind – to conquer cancer. Now Cancer Research UK is calling on Lancaster’s formidable army of mighty-mums, gutsy-grans, feisty friends and go-getting girls to make every step count by paying in their sponsorship money as soon as possible. Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring women-only series of 5k, 10k and Pretty Muddy events which raises millions of pounds every year to fund life-saving research. Jennifer Ward, Race for Life event manager for Lancaster, said: ‘I want to say a heartfelt “thanks” to everyone who took part in Race for Life, and their supporters, as well as our heroic volunteers. It was a fantastic day, full of emotion, courage, tears and laughter as over 1052 women joined forces to show cancer who’s boss. Now I’m asking all the women who took part - and all the friends, family and colleagues who pledged to sponsor them - to transform their passion into progress by returning the money they’ve raised as soon as possible. She continued ‘Cancer Research UK doesn’t receive any Government funding for its groundbreaking work. So every single individual contribution matters. It enables our researchers to help more men, women and children in Lancaster survive this devastating disease. Many people don’t realise that their entry fee only covers the cost of the event. It’s the sponsorship money that really makes a difference. So, whatever the amount, we’re asking everyone to make every effort to return their sponsorship money as soon as possible. It can be paid in online, by phone or by cheque.’ Every hour, more than four people are diagnosed with cancer in the North West* Cancer survival rates have doubled since the 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. Today, more than 95% of men diagnosed with testicular cancer are cured. More women are surviving breast cancer and more children are surviving childhood cancers than ever before.

Nell Barrie, Cancer Research UK’s Senior Science Communication Manager, said ‘We want to see people with every type of cancer, including those that are hard to treat, get the same chances of living a long life. The progress made over the last 40 years shows we are moving in the right direction. As advances accelerate, our researchers are already laying the foundations for new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer. These include personalised medicine where patients will have treatment tailored to their cancer, immunotherapy which harnesses the immune system to target the disease, better screening and tests to diagnose cancer earlier, and ways to help prevent the disease in people who are at risk. But each year more and more people are diagnosed with cancer, so there’s still much more to do. That’s why we need we need everyone who took part in Race for Life in Lancaster to make every step count by supporting our doctors, nurses and scientists so they can take strides forward in the fight against this devastating disease.’ For information on returning sponsorship money, or to make a donation, visit www. raceforlife.org. Rosemere Cancer Foundation Effective treatment remains a priority within the NHS but it is expensive and there is little left over for non-essential items and facilities that may make all the difference to a patient’s experience of the treatment process. The Rosemere Cancer Foundation, founded in 1997 when the cancer centre opened exists to provide those extras wherever possible. It is your local cancer charity. Rosemere supports the regional specialist cancer centre at Royal Preston Hospital, as well as all the local cancer units across this part of the North West. Cancer patients from the Lake District can all benefit from the services that Rosemere provides. Rosemere supports patients during treatment by providing additional facilities and services in a clinical setting wherever they are being treated. Rosemere’s target is to raise £800.000 in 2014 to help fund research, patient welfare projects, additional equipment and training right here on your door step, to help give these cancer patients the best possible care.

Jackson Live In Concert Starring Ben and his incredible live band and dancers There will only ever be one Michael Jackson and though he is sadly missed his legacy will continue well into the future. He was the greatest entertainer, a creative genius and is a musical legend who will continue to inspire countless people across the world for generations to come. Jackson Live in Concert sees long-time fan and hugely talented Ben recreate the Michael Jackson experience with a mesmerising, energetic and dynamic performance that captures the essence and magic of the “King of Pop” live on stage. Ben says “From as far into my childhood as I can remember, I have always been obsessed with Michael Jackson. Everything about the King of Pop mesmerized and enchanted me. I used to spend hours pouring over album covers, photographs, interviews, videos and anything I could find that was about Michael. Even my 7th birthday party was Michael Jackson themed! I always loved to dance and began copying Michael’s signature moves as I dreamt of being a performer just like him” Ben’s portrayal of Michael Jackson has to be the most vocally and visually accurate tribute to the King of Pop to have ever toured UK theatres. Ben is joined on the stage by his incredible live band and amazing dancers who work their way through all of MJs hits with impeccable precision. Ben’s got the look, the moonwalk and the voice and his renditions of Thriller, Beat it and Billie Jean are truly sensational. This is it ! This is as real as it gets. Jackson Live in Concert is so much more than just a tribute show - this will be a performance and an event that audiences who witness it will remember forever. What is NHW and how does it operate? NHW (Neighbourhood Watch ) is about watching and caring. Not snooping or curtain twitching. It’s about looking after each other and recreating that community spirit which we all long for
help and advice from the police, the co-ordinator will receive information about incidents likely to affect the neighbourhood. This could be information about burglars operating in the area, reports of bogus doorto-door ‘salesmen’ etc.
When neighbours unite and act together it means that many eyes and ears are ready to pick up on anything that happens in the neighbourhood that could cause worry, concern or impact on quality of life. This in turn will assist to reduce crime and antisocial behaviour leading to increased reassurance and make the community a safer place to live. By working together, neighbourhoods can band together to improve the local environment by addressing local issues including vandalism, graffiti, fly tipping, poor lighting and a lack of local amenities.
Joining or starting a NHW scheme gives you the chance to play a vital role in your community, and to make a difference. The result is something we all want - a better quality of life. The NHW sign is not only a warning to would-be criminals. It is also the sign of a united community where people care for each other.
How does it work? Everybody who joins a NHW scheme will play an important role in making their neighbourhood a more secure, friendly and pleasant place to live in. Each scheme is run by a local ‘coordinator’. He or she is initially chosen by the members of the scheme and acts as a link between them, the local Neighbourhood Policing Team, the council, other Watches and community groups.
In summary, Neighbourhood Watch; Brings people closer together, Builds a stronger community spirit, Helps to reduce crime, Reduces an individual’s anxieties about crime, Strengthens links with the local Neighbourhood Policing Team, Develops closer relationships with local councils, Improves the local environment, Creates a better quality of life. If you are interested in setting up a NHW scheme in your local community please contact Andy Denton, your local Watch Liaison Officer at Lancaster Police Station. Tel: 01524 596610 or contact your local Neighbourhood Policing Team
