Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Branch Manager Roger Bonnick feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many

tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Lancaster, Morecambe & Carnforth areas and Roger is finding that his approach is a major factor

in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Roger a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Time for a Fresh Start in 2015, so let me first wish you a Happy New Year – and may it be a great one! We hope it brings success and happiness, and that you carry the experience of the past into a brighter future. We’ve had a great start to the year with our biggest month in business, which means we are helping more businesses than ever before in providing a cost effective solution to reaching the local market. By dedicating our magazines to specific areas we can support local shopping more than any other local media. Two new magazines are soon to be launched, both at 20,000 copies per month: One will be in the Ribble Valley, covering east Preston through to Clitheroe, while we are also producing a new Chorley edition for this growth area, expanding into the surrounding villages. Recent Testimonial just in: “The Link Magazine has continued to be a reliable and solid advertising source whilst providing both good quality print and cost effectiveness on distribution. At one point we had to stop advertising as we were inundated with work! Customer service and the whole process of booking advertising is smooth and flawless.” – LazyLawn Lancashire. Well done to last month’s winner: Joan Andrews for the Where Am I? Competition. £50 is on its way. Once again, have a Great New Year!

GARDENING

Best of the bunch...

Gaultheria

Use pots in contemporary design

(Winter green)

You may see a lot of these small shrubs in garden centres bearing their colourful red or purple berries at the moment, and they can be easily grown in pots of ericaceous compost or in a garden with lime-free soil in partial shade. Gaultheria is most commonly seen as ground cover under rhododendrons or camellias, but if you want a taller variety you can choose G shallon, which grows to 1.5m, producing dark purple berries. Others, such as G mucronata, are more suitable to add low-growing interest to containers or borders, with their large porcelain-like berries in shades of dark pink, red and white appearing in November.

1

If you want the pot to make an impact, select the pot for its architectural shape rather than plant-holding abilities. Sometimes the pot will provide more of a wow factor without a plant in it.

Male and female flowers are nearly always borne by different varieties, so you need to plant more than one type to be sure you will have berries. Female varieties include ‘Cherry Ripe’ and ‘Lilian’, while male types include ‘Thymifolia’ or ‘Male’.

Horseradish If you’ve loved horseradish with your roast beef this winter, why not try growing your own for an eye-poppingly hot accompaniment?

Buy plants from specialist herb nurseries, or some seed companies offer roots in their autumn catalogues for planting up in late winter or early spring.

Be warned, though, it’s an invasive perennial with deep roots that regrow when they’re broken off and, once established, can be as difficult to get rid of as ground elder.

Make a hole in the soil with a dibber and push a single root into it, thickest end uppermost, leaving the tip at ground level. Plant three roots about 60cm apart for a good clump. Let the plants grow for two years before harvesting.

Grow it in a bottomless bucket sunk into the ground with its rim about an inch above the surface Dig up one plant in September so that the roots don’t spread or October, using the biggest up there and to keep clumps in roots for the kitchen and cutting check. off one of the thinner roots to Only the root of horseradish replant. (Armoracia rusticana) is used. Advertise your business call 0800 970 7687 or email info@link-mag.co.uk

2

Buy identical pots for a strong statement - a row of three tall containers, for instance, will look more impressive than a group of pots of different shapes, sizes and colours.

3

If you want a burst of colour in a space, consider using a pot rather than a plant for that purpose.

Things to do this month… n Make sure that tender and half-hardy fuchsias, remaining dormant in their pots, do not become completely dry. Spray any early growth with tepid water in the light to soften the wood, but do this sparingly. n When watering plants (sparingly) in the greenhouse, water them as early in the day as possible, so that surfaces are dry before nightfall. n Order new summerflowering bulbs and tubers from a reputable supplier. Store them in shallow boxes or trays and keep in a dry, frostfree place until ready to plant. 9

Eric Ollerenshaw’s Column Eric Ollerenshaw OBE MP. Member of Parliament for Lancaster & Fleetwood “The last month for me has been the usual busy one. The build up to the festive season has given me an extra opportunity to get out and about what with visiting the Christmas Fayres and Markets. In Parliament, I once again had the opportunity to call for extra money to be given to our local NHS Trust to help deal with the issues we have due to the large and difficult geography covered by the Morecambe Bay Trust. As some of you will know this is something I have raising for quite a while, as I do genuinely believe that the nature of the area that is covered by our Trust does add to its costs and I was pleased to see that the review that is being carried out by the Better Care Together Team is coming to similar conclusions. I am hopeful that we will soon see a resolution of this issue and extremely pleased that the Secretary of State for Health confirmed that our local hospital, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary is here to stay!

Staying on the subject of Health, as Chairman of the All Party group on Pancreatic Cancer, along with Pancreatic Cancer UK and colleagues I handed a national petition into Number 10 in December, asking that the drug Abraxane remain available through the Cancer Drugs Fund. While this drug, unfortunately isn’t a cure, it has been the first new drug for 20 years to offer a possible extra 2 months of life to some sufferers from this terrible disease – so now you know my New Year’s wish! Finally although a little late in the day I would like to wish everyone a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year.”

Festival Fever will grip Prestons Moor Park in Summer

It is with great pleasure that we announce that UK Tribute Festivals, the team responsible for Festwich, an annual festival on St Mary’s Park in Prestwich, have decided that it is time to take the festival further afield. The team intend to host it at Moor Park, in Preston during summer 2015 Festival curator Jools Taylor said; ‘We have been in close discussions and planning with Preston Council for nearly a year and we are extremely excited to be bringing a new Festival to Preston in summer 2015 titled “Rockprest”. Our festivals are unique as they are free to attend, the ticket is free and all the attendees are asked to pay is the actual booking fee through the ticket outlets, which is never more than £2.50. “Rockprest” will be aimed at all ages and there will be something for everybody including two stages of music, thrill rides, kid’s rides, market area plus food and beer tents that cater for all tastes.’ Festwich has seen some of the best in tributes from around the UK and Europe including tributes to Arctic Monkeys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Muse, Metallica and many more. For the Preston event the organisers are promising to deliver two full days, with over 30 acts of some of the greatest tribute acts, as well as up and coming talent. Tim Ross festival director said; ‘Moor Park Preston is an ideal site to host Rockprest as logistically it’s easily accessible, also the interest and requests to bring what

we do at Festwich to Preston has been unbelievable.’ Executive member of culture and leisure services, Councillor Veronica Afrin has said, ‘We are excited to welcome this new venture to Preston. “Rockprest” sounds like it will be a great experience for Prestonians of all ages and we’re pleased that UK Tribute Festivals chose us to be their next venue.’ The actual date and line up for Rockprest should be announced around now, with tickets being released early in the new year. Having seen how quickly Festwich tickets go, the organisers predict that Rockprest tickets won’t be around for long. To keep up to speed with festival developments and announcements you can visit the organiser’s facebook page www. facebook.com/rockprest and website www. rockprest.co.uk.

Guild Mayor and Stewards – (left-right) Cllr Ken Hudson; Cllr Bill Shannon; Guild Mayor Cllr Carl Crompton; Cllr Jonathan Saksena

The 2012 Illuminated Guild Book Reaches Completion Preston is the only place in Britain which still celebrates a Guild – every 20 years. In 2013 illustrator and calligrapher Robin Utracik of Northern Studios was commissioned to produce the 27th Guild Book as a record of the 2012 Guild Court. Preston is the only place in Britain which still celebrates a Guild – every 20 years. In 2013 illustrator and calligrapher Robin Utracik of Northern Studios was commissioned to produce the 27th Guild Book as a record of the 2012 Guild Court. The ancient right and tradition of holding a Guild was first granted to Preston in its first Royal charter in 1179. The medieval Guild focused around the burgesses or freemen of Preston who had the right to trade in the town. Burgesses were required to attend a Guild Court to ensure their membership and rights were passed down from father to son. Guild Courts were held from the 1300s and the first surviving list of the members of the Guild was made in 1397. These initially took the form of rolls but over time developed into bound books – each reflecting the time they were made. The 2012 book follows the traditional format of the previous books, but takes its inspiration from the 1952 Guild Book and the 2012 Preston Guild. Alongside the lists of councillors and burgesses are illustrations of Preston landmarks, Guild events and a watercolour portrait of the 2012 Guild Mayor, Councillor Carl Crompton.

Current Mayor of Preston, Councillor Nick Pomfret, said: ‘Many of the previous Guild Books are beautiful works of art in their own right, and this record of the 2012 Guild is no exception. Robin has done a fantastic job and I’m sure this will bring back many wonderful memories of what was a brilliant occasion in Preston’s recent history.’ • The 2012 Guild Book will be displayed in the Harris Museum & Art Gallery before taking its place with the 26 other Guild Books stored in Lancashire Archives. • The 2012 Guild Book will be signed by the Guild Mayor, Councillor Carl Crompton, before full Council on Thursday 11 December at 1pm at Preston Town Hall. • The book will also be signed by the 2012 Clerk of the Guild, Lorraine Norris, Chief Executive at Preston City Council. • Illustrator and calligrapher, Robin Utracik, hails from Preston and studied art in and around Lancashire before setting up in business over 30 years ago. • Robin was commission by Lancashire County Council to produce an illuminated address for Her Majesty The Queen commemorating the Diamond Jubilee. He also is a Trustee of the Preston Pals War Memorial Trust and designed the Memorial which is now on show at Preston Railway Station. • The traditional blue binding which features the Guild ‘G’ branding, was completed by bookbinder Peter Doyle.

Kick start your New Year With recipes packed full of nutritional vegetables

Grilled red peppers with chorizo toasts Serves 4 Ingredients 2 red peppers 4 tomatoes 4-8 slices bread 1 garlic clove 75g cooking chorizo, sliced 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 2 tbsp sherry vinegar Small handful of basil leaves

Preparation 1. Preheat the grill. Cut the peppers in half and place cut side down on a baking sheet and grill until the skins have blackened. Put in a bowl, cover with a pan lid and set aside for 10-15 minutes to allow the skins to steam off. Peel and cut into thin slices. 2. Cut the tomatoes in half, then deseed each half. Finely chop or whiz in a food processor to give the same texture. Lightly toast the bread, then rub one side only with the garlic clove. 3. Put the chorizo in a pan – there’s no need for any oil as the chorizo has enough fat in it already. Cook over a medium heat until the chorizo starts to turn golden. 4. Add the peppers, along with the extra virgin olive oil and sherry vinegar. Cook for 1-2 minutes until the mixture looks a little saucy. 5. Divide the chopped tomatoes among the toasts, and then top with the pepper and chorizo. Garnish with basil.

NISSANQASHQAI 2014 By Rob Auchterlonie WHO would ever have thought that naming a car after a desert dwelling nomadic tribe from South West Iran would bring Nissan sales success they had probably hitherto only dreamed off. But the Qashqai did just that. It brings together in one package the best of all worlds: the fun-to-drive dynamic abilities more usually associated with conventional passenger cars as well as the tough stance, excellent interior packaging and ‘command’ seating position of an SUV. Qashqai’s appeal shows in its outstanding reception in the marketplace – since launch in March 2007, it’s turned into one of the fastest selling models in their long history. Now there’s an all-new version to freshen it up for the sales race ahead as more and more manufacturers realise there’s money to be had by sticking a decent crossover in their sales brochure.

20

What it gives you in essence is the SUV experience for the cost of a hatchback. This exceptionally well equipped n-tec+ version sampled here costs £24,000, and when I say exceptionally well equipped, I mean exceptionally well equipped. I could now give you an extremely long list of what comes as part of the package but if I just mention a few highlights like panoramic glass roof, colour front, rear and side cameras, seven inch touch screen navigation and entertainment system,18 inch diamond cut alloys and electric everything then you’ll get the gist of the argument. It takes up just about the same space on the road as a Ford Focus and that’s it’s real appeal – it’s a big hatchback with the practicalities of an off roader, in that it has the ability to swallow your average family, their luggage, the obligatory dog and a few boxes if needed in its adaptable interior. And there’s plenty oddment storage for added convenience.

It’s got the looks that mark it out as an SUV, The ride quality has to my mind always been but with just two wheel drive it won’t take you good but that hasn’t stopped them tweaking many places that a full on SUV will tackle the suspension to make comfort that little bit with ease. MOTORING better and the Qashqai itself a touch more responsive to steering inputs. Clutch and gearbox are very light in use, making it easy for anyone to drive, and the 1.5 litre diesel engine in our test model was a free revving unit that made a mockery of any jibes that ‘diesels are slow and lumbering”. None of it – this one rated highly in the user friendly stakes, responsive and relatively economical in the same breath. Got nowhere near the claimed combined figure of 74.3, mind you, as a week under scrutiny means you’re not driving all over the place at 56mph with the aircon off, but just shy of 50 was acceptable. Qashqai is a credit to Nissan’s Britishness. It was designed in London, developed down the road at Cranfield and is built in Sunderland. A British Japanese car that’s been an undoubted success.

I admit was a bit underwhelmed by the five seater Qashqai when it was originally launched. Worthy but lacking that vital spark, it did its job getting you from A to B but didn’t inspire you to just get in and drive it. But this one’s different. The longer wheelbase turns it into a vehicle that has a more user friendly ride quality, much better than before for those inside, as well as more user-friendly family attributes. Over 1 million sales since launch says so…….

FASTFACTS Nissan Qashqai n-tec+; £24,000; four cylinder 1461cc diesel, 81ps, 260Nm; six speed manual gearbox; top speed 113mph, 0-62mph 11.9secs; fuel (55 litre tank) – urban 67.3, extra urban 78.5, combined 74.3; CO2 99g/km; will it fit the garage? 4377/1806/1590 (l/w/h); service interval 12 months/18,000 miles. © Wheelwrite 2014

Setting goals for a healthier New Year By Danielle Jordan

S

etting goals are part and parcel of the New Year, we reflect on the twelve months that have past and wonder if we are where we wanted to be. With the dominance of social media, we now also have shiny glittering photos of all our family and friends lives that always look more successful, more fulfilling and generally better than ours. This of course is due to the fact that we only post our highlights on Facebook; the majority of people on your friends list don’t have a backstage pass to the less enjoyable moments! But ignoring the social side, the New Year is when we decide how we will improve our lives in the year ahead. January seems to have a feel of a fresh slate, a new beginning that we don’t associate with any other time in the calendar. The most common goals are to quit smoking, lose weight and gain better employment/promotion or change your job. These are three rather massive life changes, you go to work nearly every day, your weight is directly linked (in the most part) to your daily diet and exercise regime and if you’re a smoker, you smoke every day. To change such ingrained habits are not easy. Depressingly, one survey I came across quotes only 8% as average of individuals achieving their goals. With these statistics we need all the help we can get so here are my tips for achieving your goals.

1

Find your end goal and make suitable landmarks. If you want to lose two stone that’s great but why not start off with the aim to lose 5lbs in a month? By showing yourself you can do it in smaller steps, those little chunks will soon add up, and you’ll look back and realise how far you’ve come.

e re specific, ‘exercis Make your goals mo for example if but , aim e wid y more’ is a ver like to exercise for 30 you specify that you’d e more direction. hav ’ll mins extra a week, you

It’s not easy and it can be difficult to persevere when it feels like a losing battle. But you’re not at war, just because things haven’t changed by January 2nd does not mean that you’re not going to see the changes you want to. So if you desire, you will get there and in the meantime, have a very happy year ahead.

SWEET DEALS ON SURGERY, THE FRANCEENS, DINOSAURS ARE SH*T DRAGONS Saturday 7th March, 8pm The Ferret, 55 Fylde Road, Preston, Lancashire, PR1 2XQ. Sweet Deals On Surgery are a band of three men from the north of England who play catchy/shouty/indie/ punk rock and drink too much. Alex-Bass/Voice RobGuitar/Voice Tim-Drums have just released their debut E.P ‘Total Reek Hole’, with song titles such as ‘Elvis Costello is a w****r’ and ‘Desk from the waist down’ it’s safe to say SDOS don’t take themselves too seriously. Make no mistake though, the songs contained within these titles are well crafted, melodic, instantly catchy noise pop, with structures that veer a little from the norm. The Franceens are a 3 piece rock and roll band from York UK. They have been described by many as being a ‘real band’. They are known for their ferocious live shows, constant gigging, and their high-energy version of garage/rock and roll style music. They started in February 2013 and have been going strong ever since. Dinosaurs Are Sh*t Dragons: while most bands try to be something they’re not this Blackpool 4 piece are trying hard to not be something they are: socially-inept, culturally-handicapped genre cuckoos: pinching the best bits of a mixed bag of influences and inciting big dumb sing alongs across the North West with a barely contained energy that makes onlookers wonder if they’re trying to kill each other. Sure, it’s not big or clever or cool, but maybe that’s the Music Industry’s problem, maybe it should take a little break from its fancy haircuts and status updates and just have a bit of a laugh. Free Entrance. http://theferret.info ZEEROX, 1.21 GIGAWATTS + DOWNERS Saturday 21st March, 8pm The Ferret, 55 Fylde Road, Preston, Lancashire, PR1 2XQ.
