Fundraising Events & More

ree microchipping at the Knott End Pet Shop on Monday 11th May. We are doing free micro-chipping from 10am to 3pm at The Knott End Pet Shop, Knott End, FY6 0AU. Pets must be over 12 weeks old, all cats, rabbits and ferrets must be in a secure carrier and dogs must be on lead at all times as the event can become very busy.

The branch will be fundraising at the following Pets at Home stores throughout the weekend of Friday 29th May - Sunday 31st May (times will be confirmed at a later date). Special Appeal: ‘Gorgeous George’. George was removed from a house by an RSPCA Inspector after his owner wasn’t caring for him properly. Due to him being neglected and living in poor conditions, George developed a severe skin allergy which was left untreated. George has been at the centre since October receiving treatment for his skin and is now finally on the mend and on the lookout for a new loving home. As his skin condition was so severe, there is a chance that it may flare up again. If this was to happen, the animal centre would pay for any medication required. The centre will also provide George with monthly flea treatments which will help towards

George controlling his skin condition. George is a friendly boy who loves human company and attention, he is suitable to live with another cat and older children and he must remain on a hypoallergenic diet and not be given any treats. If you believe you can offer this gorgeous boy the home he greatly deserves or have any questions then please contact the animal centre.

Volunteer Gardener Needed: The Animal Centre requires volunteers with some knowledge and experience of gardening to help maintain the outdoor areas and help create the community garden that we are in the process of establishing at the centre. This is a fantastic opportunity for those who are green fingered and even more so now with Summer fast approaching. Lancashire women urged to get pretty muddy Lancashire women are being urged to fight dirty when it comes to conquering cancer - by signing up now for an exciting new event from Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life

P

reston has been chosen to host the only Race for Life Pretty Muddy event taking place in the county this summer.

Pretty Muddy is a women-only, non-competitive 5k obstacle course – with added mud. It will take place for the first time in the city at Preston’s Moor Park on Saturday, July 18.

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life family of events also includes the 5k and 10k courses, which thousands of women will take on at the same venue on Sunday, May 24 to raise money for life-saving research. It’s the perfect challenge for those looking to shake off the January blues and commit to get more active in 2015.

Every hour, more than four people are diagnosed with cancer in North West. And that’s why Cancer Research UK is calling on Lancashire women to fight back against this devastating disease by choosing their challenge - Pretty Muddy, 5k or 10k - and signing up now.

Laura Taylor, Cancer Research UK’s North West Event Manager, said: ‘We’re so excited about launching Race for Life Pretty Muddy in Preston. The event is taking place in the city for the first time and we’re calling on local ladies to sign up now. We’ve no doubt that they’ve got the fighting spirit to get down and dirty in the bid to beat cancer sooner. Pretty Muddy promises all the fun and camaraderie of our much loved 5k and 10k events – just with an extra serving of mud. Race for Life events are not competitive. They are not about being fit or fast. Women can complete the Pretty Muddy course at their own pace, climbing, jumping, walking and laughing their way around. The Dukes Entertains Culture Secretary The Dukes welcomed the Secretary of State for Culture on Monday to celebrate the theatre’s recent successes

ajid Javid was accompanied by Lancaster MP, Eric Ollerenshaw on his visit to Lancashire’s only professional producing theatre.

They were given a behind the scenes tour of the award-winning theatre as it prepared for a week-long run of the acclaimed production of Hindle Wakes and heard how 143,000 people had visited the venue in 2013/14 – a record for the company.

The politicians also met representatives from Lancaster University which has signed up for a three-year Cultural Partnership with The Dukes aiming to develop arts, education and learning in Lancaster and provide young people from areas of social economic deprivation with high quality opportunities.

Mr Javid took time to visit The Dukes Centre for Creative Learning (CCL) too which provided opportunities for more than 4,000 young people last year. There he met members of the Shattering Images theatre company for people with learning needs.

The Dukes Executive Director, Ivan Wadeson said: ‘We were delighted to welcome Mr Javid to The Dukes and show him the breadth of work we do here and its importance to the local community and economy.’

Outstanding grade Balmoral Children’s Centre was recently inspected

by OFSTED and graded as Outstanding

almoral centre, which is now a cluster of four centres within Morecambe, along with Poulton, Westgate and Heysham, is a one stop shop for families within the Morecambe area who have a child under the age of 5.

Families can access services which range from health, adult education and family support, in addition to stay and play groups. Support to help access nursery places for your little ones is also available at all centres.

Balmoral Children’s Centre is the very last centre to be inspected within Lancashire, and we are very proud to be awarded Outstanding.

The Lancaster canal trust The Lancaster Canal Trust took advantage of the Preston Richard Parish Community Plan launch day at the Village Hall in Endmoor, near Kendal

T

hey were rewarded with a very good response from the public, many interested people visiting the trust stand.

Helen Thomas and Maureen Olley took turns to man the stall with Susan and Frank Sanderson. Maureen conversed with a farmer who remembers, as a girl, the boats going past their farm and running to wave them on.

The re-watering work at Stainton Crossing to Sellet Hall is much commented on and the coming Trail boat and CountryFest Festival should be an outstanding success if all the interest shown is anything to go on.

They also met a local Garage proprietor who promised to look up his family photographs showing the wagon-way to Wakefield’s Gunpowder Wharf, particularly where it crossed the river Peasey. These pictures have never been seen outside of his family.

It is also of interest to note that all the South Lakeland and North Lancashire rivers down to the River Wyre still carry Scottish names, dating from the time we were part of Strathclyde in the time of King Macbeth.

ritain’s best all-round entertainer John Barrowman has added four extra dates to his UK tour for 2015 in support of his new album, ‘You Raise Me Up’ (out now). This will be John’s first full UK tour in four years, and promises to be an entertainment experience not to be missed.

‘I’m so excited to be touring again,’ said John, ‘that I’m choreographing songs and arranging stories in my sleep.’

John’s fans funded the album through PledgeMusic’s Direct to Fan platform. It features new arrangements of many of John’s favourite songs, including ‘Mandy’, ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’, ‘A Thousand Years,’ and the title track, ‘You Raise Me Up.’ ‘This album has been a thrilling personal journey for me,’ added John. ‘Each lyric, each melody means something special.

I can’t wait to perform them live for all my fans who helped fund “You Raise Me Up.”’ John’s career has been nothing short of incredible and this year has been no exception. John was awarded an MBE in HM The Queen’s Birthday Honours in June and apart from starring in ‘Arrow’ as Malcolm Merlyn (aka The Dark Archer) in the US and on Sky in the UK, hosting ’Sing Your Face Off’ for ABC in the US, John’s third fantasy novel, ‘The Book of Beasts’ co-authored with his sister Carole Barrowman was released in July. John is hosting the second series of BBC 1 quiz show ‘Pressure Pad throughout September and his new Channel 4 show ‘The Small Pet Hospital with John Barrowman’ will air later this year. He will also host ‘The National Lottery Awards’ and play Buttons in Glasgow SECC’s 2014-15 pantomime production of ‘Cinderella.’

John’s 2015 tour will now see him visit 20 cities across the UK including Leicester, Cambridge, Guildford and Oxford.
