Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Branch Manager Roger Bonnick feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many

tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Lancaster, Morecambe & Carnforth areas and Roger is finding that his approach is a major factor

in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Roger a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Lancaster News

The 6th Lancaster Music Festival line-up is announced With 44 locations, over 160 acts and 200 music performances over five days, Lancaster Music Festival is preparing for what might be Lancaster’s busiest weekend ever at their first unofficial Bank Holiday starting early on Thursday October 9th and finishing early on Tuesday October 14th at 1am. With the award winning festival’s line-up finally confirmed, the festival brochure hot off the press and the website bursting with acts from blues, rock, folk, indie, EDM, funk, soul to samba, brass bands, vaudeville, classical and choral it is expected that Lancaster Music Festival will be the busiest weekend Lancaster has ever seen and certainly it’s most musical. That was the case in 2013 and this year is set to build on that. Along with local favourites such as the highly irreverent edgy country of Lumberjack Cowboy Heartbreak Trucking Company, blistering indie with Carpe and Lake Komo, samba act Batala, 60’s Hammond groove with Get Carter, classical ensembles from players from the Haffner Orchestra and the nationally known pop act Lovely Eggs there will be acts from around the UK including 2014 Open Mic UK winner and BBC Introducing pick Heidi Browne, Southampton acoustic duo Eagle & Weeks, Manchester’s one man band genius Paddy Steer and another Mancunian with seriously fast fingers Franco and the Dreadnought to name a few. The festival’s international programme will again feature Viennese songbird Marina Zettl (her 3rd year at the festival), a Vienna newcomer with Armenian fire, Ozlem Bulut, a Swedish neo-folk band with the deceptively descriptive sobriquet of Gibrish, a bombshell of a west coast rock and roller top 40 in the form of the racy Lacy Younger, soul sensation Andria Simone from Toronto (who will also close the festival on Monday night), deliciously deft modern jazz from Tel Aviv’s Shalosh, Ghanaian drum and chant from Kakatsitsi and the blistering funk rock of New Jersey power trio Sensory Hoverload. The festival is free and all the city venues are within easy walking distance of each other while a regular bus service connects with Lancaster University.

Ragged Union Trio

This year also welcomes some new venues including at least one bank (incidentally, the banks will be open during the “unofficial bank holiday weekend”), a music shop, two additional outdoor squares including the newly installed plinth in Market Square, a wine and beer shop, a horse drawn beer wagon, and of course Lancaster Castle. For the first time in 1000 years Lancaster Castle will be hosting live bands with 23 concerts over the three days. Entry to the Castle is a nominal £1. Only one venue is ticketed for nationally known acts and the fees are nominal even there. The festival will also host street theatre, mini ale festivals and plenty of food both in the venues and the market stalls. The event is family friendly during the day and evening with adults being able to enjoy live music through the wee hours with at least one venue open 24 hours and another two licensed to 4am. The 64 page festival brochures produced by @Lancaster Magazine are available NOW in the participating venues and Lancaster and Morecambe Visitor Information Centres and costs £1. General enquiries to: info@ lancastermusicfestival.com. Please note: Music applications for the festival ended on July 1st. The festival is still accepting sponsorship up until September 25th (for specific events only). Any one interested can contact the festival coordinator Ben Ruth at info@lancastermusicfestival.com.

HALLOWEEN

HOW TO MAKE A TRADITIONAL JACK O’LANTERN STEP 1: The traditional scary face is very straightforward to make. Cut a lid in the top of the pumpkin around the stem so that you can scoop out the insides. A good rule of thumb is that the lid should be about two-thirds the diameter of the pumpkin. Take a sharp, long-bladed knife and, holding it at an angle, cut a circular or hexagonal-shaped lid. Holding the knife at an angle when making the cut will help ensure the lid does not fall into the empty pumpkin. Use a large spoon to scoop out the insides - the seeds etc., then gently scrape the walls clean and the base until it is flat.

STEP 2: Put the pumpkin on a table and turn it until you decide which side you want to cut. Using a fine permanent marker, draw on the face, and using a sharp knife with a firm, short blade, carefully follow your guidelines. Once all the cuts have been make, remove the pieces by gently pushing them from the inside out. For more complicated patterns use a stencil pinned to the pumpkin, prick the motif onto the pumpkin’s surface using a thick needle, join the dots with a marker pen and cut.

STEP 3: Onto the flat inside base of the pumpkin place a tea light. White candles will make the lantern glow most effectively, although for a more spooky effect, put the candle in a coloured glass holder.

...And once the festivities are over, do remember that the pumpkin can be added to the compost heap. Advertise your business call 0800 970 7687 or email info@link-mag.co.uk

PICKING YOUR PUMPKIN... Rule one is to buy a pumpkin of good size. A small one will be fiddly to cut and something the size of a handball will look a bit pathetic. A good average size is 30-40 cm tall, with a well rounded shape. When selecting your future lantern, check for damage and bruising, and reject any with injury, for they will not last so long. Also, do not carry a pumpkin by its stem as this will injure it. 13

Baked Tomatoes Stuffed with Rice and Spice Serves: 4 With a beautiful British summer almost behind us, bring warmth to the table this autumn with a colourful dish packed with flavour. The succulent roasted tomatoes combined with aromatic and warming spices are sure to brighten that evening meal. Preparation Time: 15 minutes Cooking Time: 35 minutes Ingredients: 12-14 large heritage or heirloom tomatoes 1 tbsp olive oil plus extra for drizzling 2 shallots, chopped 1 stick of celery, finely chopped 100g basmati and wild rice A pinch of chilli flakes The leaves from 1 sprig of rosemary, finely chopped 300ml hot vegetable or chicken stock 100g Manchego cheese, chopped

Tip... • These are a great starter for dinner parties. Prepare and stuff the rice filling in advance, and then pop the tomatoes in the oven before serving.

Method: Slice off the top of each tomato horizontally, reserving each tomato ‘lid’. Scoop out the seeds and heart from the middle of each and spoon into a bowl. Put the tomatoes into an ovenproof dish and drizzle with a little oil. Season well. Heat the oil in a pan and gently cook the shallots and celery until just softened. Finely chop the tomato pulp and add to the pan. Simmer for 5-8 minutes until the mixture looks saucy. Season the mixture well then

stir in the rice, chilli flakes and rosemary. Pour in 200ml stock, cover with a lid and bring to the boil. Simmer for 15 minutes until the stock has all absorbed and the rice is just tender. Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan oven/ gas mark 6. Stir in the Manchego cheese, then spoon the rice evenly among the tomato shells. Put the ‘lids’ on top of each, then pour around the remaining stock. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 20 minutes, removing the foil for the last 5 minutes of cooking. www.wecareyouenjoy.eu/en/inicio

Make Your Race For Life Count Jennifer Ward, the Events Manager for Cancer Research UK is calling on everyone who took part in Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life Lancaster to make their Race for Life count – by returning their sponsorship money as soon as possible to help beat cancer. Last year, a third of the women who took part in Race for Life didn’t return any sponsorship money. Many don’t realise that their entry fee only covers the cost of the event. It’s the sponsorship money that really makes a difference. Cancer Research UK relies on money raised through Race for Life to fund life-saving research, much of which happens very close to us in the North West. Every day, more than 100 people are diagnosed with cancer in the North West. But the good news is that research, funded through Leigh Race for Life is helping men, women and children to survive the disease. Cancer survival rates have doubled since the 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. The women want to highlight how important money raised through Race for Life is to the work of doctors, nurses and scientists funded by Cancer Research UK. They are dedicated to beating cancer by understanding its causes and investigating how best to diagnose, treat and prevent the disease. Race for Life is an amazing women-only series of events which raises millions of pounds every year for life-saving research to beat 200 types of cancer – helping men, women and children across the region. Jennifer Ward, Race for Life event manager for the North West, said: ‘Race for Life at Lancaster University was a fantastic event. We want to say a heart-felt thanks to everyone who took part or supported our participants, as well as the wonderful volunteers who helped make it happen. Already the generosity of local people has raised an amazing £44,768 from the Lancaster event, but we still have a bit of way to go to reach our target of £50,000. Last year, a third of the women who took part didn’t return any sponsorship money. Without this money, Race for Life can’t fund all the research that’s needed to help save more lives. As the number of people diagnosed

with cancer in the North West continues to rise, and the economy tightens, we need the support of local people now more than ever. So, whatever the amount, we’re asking everyone to make every effort to return their sponsorship money as soon as possible. It can be paid in online, by phone or by cheque.’ For information on returning sponsorship money, or to make a donation, visit www. raceforlife.org

Make It Count!

Many women who take part in Race for Life forget to return their sponsorship money. This year, please don’t let it be you! There are two ways to return sponsorship money: • Online at www.raceforlife.org • By phone by calling 0871 641 1111

EVERGREEN GARDENING

orders can look so lifeless at this time of year as perennials have died down while deciduous trees have shed their leaves, which is where evergreens come into their own.

Of course, some might just associate evergreens with the columnar conifers so often dotted in among other specimens in the flower border to give height, structure and some colour throughout the year, but you can also feature evergreens in rock gardens, as feature plants in the shrub border and to add vibrance and form to containers. The usual evergreen suspects include azaleas, heathers and laurels, but with careful suiting and siting, there’s a wealth of evergreens which can provide so much more interest. Don’t think that evergreen is just green - look for flowering evergreens which can provide a splash of colour when flowers are non-existent. Plant Choisya ternata ‘Sundance’ to give the border a yellow feature, or Photinia fraseri ‘Red Robin’ to provide dazzling red foliage in spring. Pepper the border with variegated specimens such as Euonymus fortunei ‘Emerald ‘n’ Gold’, which is spotted with gold to give an eye-catching contrast to other less colourful plants in winter. Aim to include both colourful evergreens and deciduous shrubs with either fine flowers or stunning autumn foliage. In general, shrubs tend to go at the back and in the middle of the border, herbaceous perennials at the middle and in front. Aim to have around the same number of evergreen and deciduous shrubs and trees. It’s not only winter when evergreens can come into their own. You may have thought conifers were boring, but they can be used effectively within a hot colour scheme to produce a modern look and are ideal as a feature planting within a low maintenance gravel garden.

20

For a really hot combination try Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’ with its pendant arches of red flowers alongside the conifer Thuja ‘Rheingold’. The thuja’s adult foliage, a rich, deep old gold, is brilliant in winter as the cold temperature enhances the colour even more. Add low growing Berberis thunbergii ‘Darts Red Lady’ with bright yellow heleniums and this will give real warmth all year around. Conifers can be used to create a classy combination for a sunny position with an emphasis on contrasting colours from the cool end of the colour spectrum. Use the upright columnar Juniperus chinensis ‘Pyramidalis’ with its prickly glaucous leaves in combination with the purple-leaved smoke bush Cotinus coggygria ‘Royal Purple’. Add the silver aromatic leaves of Artemesia ‘Powis Castle’ underplanted with the ground hugging Persicaria affinis ‘Darjeeling Red’ with its bright red flowers and large deep-green leaves. Avoid grouping too many similar conifers together. Go for some contrast and add colour with blue, orange, yellow and gold types. There are even conifers that turn mauve in the winter such as Crytomeria japonica ‘elegans compacta’ which look stunning against snow. They can also be used as a background to other plants. Try dark green behind flaming-red tulips, or blue-grey foliage behind red or blue flowering plants. Remember though that evergreen doesn’t necessarily mean indestructible. Make sure the plant is suitable for the place you’re going to put it because an evergreen is not always winter hardy. And ensure that the variety of shrub or tree you are choosing is evergreen, especially when the genus is a wide one. Check the labels of lonicera, berberis, viburnum and rhododendron, for instance, of which there are both evergreen and deciduous varieties. Conifers are low-maintenance plants, requiring only occasional trimming, provide shelter for garden wildlife all year and are a favourite of goldcrests and coal tits, providing structure by adding height to delineating areas.

GARDENING

Best of the bunch...

Euonymus

You may have to stifle a yawn at the thought of buying another little evergreen euonymus, probably E. fortunei, for your winter pots or hanging baskets, but don’t knock it as it will often brighten up a spot in winter where nothing else will grow. These evergreen types and particularly the variegated varieties are probably the best of all ground covers in winter borders and under trees. They will grow in virtually any soil in both sun and partial shade, are easy to keep in check and can look pretty impressive against a shady wall. There are some which can be used as climbers, clinging to the wall like ivy, such as the white-edged ‘Silver Queen’.

But if you want a true splash of autumn colour go for the deciduous spindle bush, Euonymus alatus, which grows to 2m (6ft) high and 2m (6ft) wide and produces a spectacular display of moltencrimson leaves and later reveals unusual corky flanges up and down the stems.

Good enough to eat...

maincrop carrots

images: shutterstock.com

When preparing the ground in autumn, don’t add manure or compost because the crop won’t like it, and choose a sunny spot. Mix the seed with sand to avoid sowing too thickly and rake a general purpose fertiliser into the surface two weeks before sowing. The seedlings can be thinned out when they are big enough to handle. To store carrots over the winter, lift them and cut off the leaves to about 1cm above the crowns and then place the roots between layers of dry sand in a strong box, making sure they’re not touching. Store them in a shed and remove any roots which show signs of rotting. They should keep until about March. Advertise your business call 0800 970 7687 or email info@link-mag.co.uk

3 ways to...

Combine plants to help each other...

1

Plant runner beans with sunflowers. The beans donate nitrate to the sunflowers and can use them to climb up.

2 3

Grow chives under roses to suppress fungal diseases, especially blackspot. Grow rhubarb close to aquilegias, to deter red spider mite.

What is NHW and how does it operate? NHW (Neighbourhood Watch ) is about watching and caring. Not snooping or curtain twitching. It’s about looking after each other and recreating that community spirit which we all long for

help and advice from the police, the co-ordinator will receive information about incidents likely to affect the neighbourhood. This could be information about burglars operating in the area, reports of bogus doorto-door ‘salesmen’ etc.

When neighbours unite and act together it means that many eyes and ears are ready to pick up on anything that happens in the neighbourhood that could cause worry, concern or impact on quality of life. This in turn will assist to reduce crime and antisocial behaviour leading to increased reassurance and make the community a safer place to live. By working together, neighbourhoods can band together to improve the local environment by addressing local issues including vandalism, graffiti, fly tipping, poor lighting and a lack of local amenities.

Joining or starting a NHW scheme gives you the chance to play a vital role in your community, and to make a difference. The result is something we all want - a better quality of life. The NHW sign is not only a warning to would-be criminals. It is also the sign of a united community where people care for each other. In summary, Neighbourhood Watch; Brings people closer together, Builds a stronger community spirit, Helps to reduce crime, Reduces an individual’s anxieties about crime, Strengthens links with the local Neighbourhood Policing Team, Develops closer relationships with local councils, Improves the local environment, Creates a better quality of life.

How does it work? Everybody who joins a NHW scheme will play an important role in making their neighbourhood a more secure, friendly and pleasant place to live in. Each scheme is run by a local ‘coordinator’. He or she is initially chosen by the members of the scheme and acts as a link between them, the local Neighbourhood Policing Team, the council, other Watches and community groups.

If you are interested in setting up a NHW scheme in your local community please contact Andy Denton, your local Watch Liaison Officer at Lancaster Police Station. Tel: 01524 596610 or contact your local Neighbourhood Policing Team
