azzling ecorations A beautifully-decked tree should be the focal point on the home at Christmas and this year there's an array of styles to choose from. With Christmas on the way, it's almost time to deck the halls, dress the tree and turn your home into a seasonal sanctuary. A beautifully decked tree should be the focal point of the home at Christmas and this year there's an array of styles to choose from. You can indulge a passion for purple, be truly traditional, shimmer with metallics, or stay true to your 'green' principles with ecofriendly touches. But if the festivities inspire a 'Bah humbug!' feeling or you prefer a 'cool Yule' keeping fuss and decoration to a minimum, there are plenty of effects that are chic and glamorous rather than garish.

bursting with purples and their shade partner, lilac. Next's mixed bauble set of 100 costs £20, while Sainsbury's baubles start from £1.99 each. Flamboyant designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen is never slow to spot a trend - his collection for Matalan's Influence range features decadent purple and gold baubles, from £4. Complement them with Lakeland's clip-on purple Butterflies, £7.99 for three, and its purple and gold beads and sequins garland, £7.99.

Nostalgic style This charming look evokes memories of Christmases past. A tree should be prettily decorated in traditional red, white and green, and don't forget to give pride of place to cherished decorations made by youngsters.

A purple wonderland Purple's the favourite colour scheme for rooms this winter, and you could echo the trend by letting its rich, glowing shades give a touch of opulence and luxury to a tree. "Decorations in rich, nocturnal colours such as plum add a spot of velvety indulgence that's comforting for long, dark winter days. Combine with accents of teal and glittering gold to give the look a distinctive, fashionable edge." says Marnie Janaway, Sainsbury's head of home design Get the look: B&Q and Argos both have purple trees if you truly want to embrace this style or go for a brilliant contrast by hanging those richly coloured decorations on a black tree, such as Matalan's luxury black tree, £20. Next and Sainsbury's bargain bauble collections are

"Nothing beats the traditional festive palette of red, white and green," says Marnie. Get the look: Matalan's large faux fir tree is a snip at £15, or at Homebase, real trees start from £9.99. Lakeland's Christmas decorations are a must for traditionalists, with miniature felt Santas, four for £4.99, while a set of red and white Scandi-style snowflakes, trees, stars and reindeer, is a seasonal snip at £6.99. Continue the red and white theme with a famous reindeer duo, Dancer & Prancer for £9.99 from Lakeland, which could sit on a mantel ready for Santa's arrival.

THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS DINNER As we hit the festive season we look at the latest Christmas dinner trends and explore the best way to cook your turkey, goose or even rabbit this year.

Wash and dry the turkey, removing any feathers. Pull out the giblets and the neck, then set aside. To test that the turkey is ready, pierce the thigh through its thickest part; the juices should run clear. Take the turkey out and leave to rest, covered with a clean tea towel. Leave to rest for up to 1 hour. Now make the gravy. Drain the fat and juices from the tin into a jug, discarding the veg and the neck. Place the tin over a flame, then pour in the cider, scraping up the flavourfilled crusty bits with a wooden spoon. Reduce the cider by half, then strain into a saucepan.

Bispham Junior Football Federation BJFF in the Awards Recognised for our Outstanding Contribution to the Community at the Radio Wave Heroes in the Community Awards Ceremony....

A delegation from BJFF were invited to the prestigious Radio Wave Heroes in the Community Awards Ceremony, at the Hilton Hotel, on Thursday 25th November, for a night of entertainment and to recognise the unsung local heroes in our Community (Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde) across a number of categories. We had received the invite to attend the event due to a nomination from a parent being considered worthy enough by a panel of judges to be shortlisted into the final three in the category "Outstanding Contribution to the Community". After being entertained by a number of acts and a threecourse dinner, the awards ceremony commenced, with Radio Wave presenters Ged Mills and Hayley Kay compering the evening. With some incredibly heartfelt stories and thoroughly deserving winners in categories such as Bravest Youngster, Young Achiever of the Year, Child of Courage, it was an incredibly humbling experience. As our category was announced, we waited with anticipation and were delighted when we were announced as WINNERS in one of the strongest categories........ as we were treated to a montage of pictures of our children, coaches, our upgraded facilities, and the events we have held in the community, with a voice-over highlighting the achievements of our army of volunteers, there was plenty of tears in our eyes, and a great sense of pride and fulfilment........... BJFF Poulton & District League - Update....In the Poulton Primary League, despite playing some excellent football during the month of November, the luck was not with us and the results were not going our way. Our Under 9's Blades lie 6th in the table having lost ground during the month on all their rivals, losing narrowly when the better side in most games. Our Under 9's Predators battled gamely with strong performances in three games during the month showing signs of improvement. Our Under 10's shared the points in both games played this month, and lie third within touching distance of the runners-up spot moving into December. BJFF Blackpool & District Youth League - Update....The highlight of the month in the Blackpool and District Youth League was undoubtedly our newest team pulling off their first victory of the season, with our Under 11's Predators too strong for FC Rangers, and coming away with 3 points from a 3-0 victory. Our Under 11's Blades won both of their games convincingly to move up to 5th in the Domino division. In the Under 12's, a strong start to the month saw our boys score 24 goals without reply in the first 2 games, but 2 defeats to end the month stunted their progress, and they lie 5th after 8 games.

for money, with four high-scoring games accruing one victory and three narrow defeats to slip to 4th place. In the Under 14's, our Whites squad are joint third with 2 wins out of 3 games played in the month, and representative team recognition has come their way with Elliott Hargreaves and Simon Timothy selected for the league rep team - well done boys. LINK-News BLACKPOOL’S ECONOMY BENEFITS from DIS Disability Information & Support (DIS) has secured half a million pounds in welfare benefits over the last twelve months for Blackpool’s disabled community, their families and carers. The expertise to offer a comprehensive service to the community has meant that people are informed and supported to secure their entitlement to welfare benefits. DIS is one of only a small number of welfare benefit services that offer assessment, form completion, reconsiderations and representation at tribunals. We also offer advice and support around general day to day disability issues. So if you know of someone who needs DIS please ring our helplines direct on 472202/472203 or info@disabilityinformationsupport.co.uk www.disabilityinformationsupport.co.uk INOVATIVE PARTNERSHIP for DISABLED In 2009 DIS were commissioned by Blackpool Council to develop and facilitate The Blackpool Disability Partnership. The launch took place in November 2009 and was very well attended. Amongst the guest list were Councillor Lily Henderson, Councillor Kath Rowson, The Mayor & Mayoress of Blackpool, Councillor and Mrs. Norman Hardy, local football legend Jimmy Armfield and Gordon Marsden MP. To-date we have 74 very active members from the community, voluntary, faith and statutory sectors. The partnership has produced an action plan and meets bi-monthly at The Blackpool Centre for Independent Living. In January 2010 we set up a small working group who were tasked to work on organising The Fylde Coast Disability Independence Show, to be held in September 2010 at Blackpool Sports Centre. The show achieved many outcomes including: • 400 disabled adults, children and older people attended • Over 60 exhibitors from the community, voluntary, statutory and private businesses • The production of a DVD (available on You Tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HX1772HxAEk) I would recommend that you take the opportunity to watch the DVD on You Tube as we can’t interpret, or describe, the many outcomes that the show achieved. If your ward members need more information regarding the partnership please call Alan Reid (chair) on 472201 or email manager@disabilityinformationsupport.co.uk

Community D.I.S. ‘n’ That DISABILITY HATE CRIME A steering group has been set up to look at the current issues around community safety for the disabled community and is based around Disability Hate Crime. The group has several key members including, Stephen Brookes MBE and Julie Hall from Lancashire Constabulary. One of the agreed actions is that DIS will deliver the hate crime reporting service by using disabled volunteers to assist with the initial reporting and form filing process. Using volunteers was felt to be a key part of encouraging disabled and vulnerable people to report an incident or crime. Once funding is secured DIS will operate from their base at Blackpool Centre for Independent Living, Whitegate Drive. In the meantime, if you have experienced hate crime or an incident please ring/email the DIS helpline to discuss you concerns. A VOLUNTEERS STORY A volunteer’s story explores the experience of a man with a disability over the last three years. Eric started with DIS in 2007 and was trained and supported in areas of administration. His progress and personal development was so quick that he eventually was responsible for administration duties including monitoring welfare benefit cash gained, mapping of disability groups and working on specific administration on the disability show. Shortly after volunteering Eric also commenced a qualification in ECDL Level 1. Subsequently he then took level two and passed both courses with flying colours. In 2010 Eric then undertook an NVQ in business administration and an information & technology qualification, Level2, and passed both. He is now confident with self esteem and self worth. The experience over the last three years with DIS has meant that Eric is now moving into the employment market. We are always looking to recruit volunteers (disabled/ or non disabled) so if you know anyone who can help then please contact Andy Coupland direct on 472204 or email andis1@live.co.uk. AND FINALLY... We currently have a vacancy for our Trustee board. Our board is a dynamic, friendly team who all have an interest in disability and are committed to the prosperous future of Access Lancashire and DIS. If you would like more details then please contact Alan for a chat direct on 472204 or email manager@disabilityinformationsupport.co.uk.
