HOW TO AVOID HOLIDAY WEIGHT GAIN by health and fitness expert, Pam Tribick. Over-indulging at Christmas can leave us feeling fat and bloated: waistlines increase and clothes feel tighter. But it’s the wrong time of year to try and lose pounds so aim to maintain your weight – keeping weight under control is easier than trying to lose it afterwards. By following some simple tips you can still enjoy the festive season without feeling deprived. At a buffet: -Use a side plate not a dinner plate and avoid stockpiling food. -Don’t hang around the buffet table picking, move away. -Battered, breadcrumbed, pastry, creamy = high fat = weight gain. Eating out: -Share a starter or a dessert. -Opt for boiled/steamed/grilled dishes instead of fried. -Order salad or more vegetables instead of chips. Eating at home: -If you pick while you’re preparing food, have healthy low-fat food to hand -To avoid temptation, keep all the fattening Xmas goodies out if sight unless you have guests -If you feel full but still have food on your plate, don’t dig in and finish it, put it in the waste not on the waist - that goes for the kid’s leftovers as well! Other tips: -Have a healthy snack before eating out so you won’t arrive too hungry and binge -Drinking water before and during a meal can help you feel fuller so you eat less -Trim the portion size, trim the fat, trim your waist And remember exercise. Exercise works and the more you exercise the more it works. By making a few small changes you’ll be surprise how you can eat, drink and be merry during the Christmas season and still avoid excessive weight gain.

TCFC SENIORS NEWS & VIEWS A quiet month on the pitch for all at TCFC as the bad weather has played havoc with the fixture list. Since the last edition of Thornton Link only two Senior 1st team games have taken place .An away win against Croston Sports on 31st October had both teams well matched

in the opening minutes but with both sides looked slightly nervy, Croston could have taken an early lead but for good saves by the keeper THOMPSON, particularly one from a Croston free kick that was well saved low to his left. Thornton went ahead 25 minutes in when WARWICK went through the defence and made no mistake to slot home. More chances followed and LANGTON’s header from a corner went just over. At half time, 1-0 up, Thornton just about deserved their lead. In the second half a struggling BEAVERS was replaced by BAILEY. While Thornton continued to press, there were few clear cut chances and the game became scrappy. HALL and WARWICK were replaced on 70 minutes by BORROWDALE and GILLETT. With fresh legs up front, Thornton once again got a foothold on the game. DIDLOCK’s ball down the line on 80 minutes was collected by BAILEY who showed good strength to hold off the defender, turn and cross the ball across the face of the goal where the lurking BORROWDALE turned it into the net. Final score 2-0 A home fixture followed on November 21st even though it was touch and go as to whether the game would be on again after countless downpours. Fortunately, following 3 weeks of postponed fixtures. Finally, able to get back to what Saturday afternoons were made for TCFC were up against Milnthorpe Corinthians, a team placed much further down the table. Thornton were still missing some key players and the strength and depth of the squad that manager Mendonca has built this season played its part .Despite the windy conditions, Thornton were able to get the ball down and play some nice stuff, without ever really being troubled by the opposition. The first goal came 25 minutes in when BEECH played a neat pass through to WARWICK who rarely fails to score from those situations. He obliged and Thornton went 1-0 up. Thornton continued to press, looking dominant in all areas of the pitch. Just before half time, a long range strike from BEAVERS took a deflection to beat the keeper and Thornton went in at half time comfortable with a 2-0 lead. With Thornton still in control after the break, the first substitution was made: TALLY on for REEVES. Soon after, TALLY made an immediate impact with a cracking free kick which BEAVERS headed skilfully past the keeper. Further replacements followed, with BORROWDALE replacing WARWICK and PARKIN on for DIDLOCK.15 minutes from time MATTHEWS found himself one on one with the keeper, and finished calmly to make it 4-0. A nice link up between BEECH and BORROWDALE, ten minutes from time, saw Thornton go 5-0 up, and topped off a good performance for the home side. This win takes TCFC in to a very healthy position keeping them hot on the heels of leaders Fleetwood Hesketh with a game in hand.
