ROLEX…WHAT A DIFFERENCE A NAME MAKES ! ! Hans Wilsdorf and his brother-in-law, Alfred Davis, founded Wilsdorf and Davis, the company that would eventually become Rolex SA, in London, England in 1905 Wilsdorf and Davis’ main business at the time was importing Hermann Aegler’s Swiss movements to England and placing them in quality watch cases made by Dennison and others. These early wristwatches were sold to jewellers, who then put their own names on the dial. The earliest watches from Wilsdorf and Davis were usually hallmarked “W&D” inside the caseback. In 1908, Wilsdorf registered the trademark “Rolex” and opened an office in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. The company name “Rolex” was registered on 15 November 1915. The book The Best of Time: Rolex Wristwatches: An Unauthorized History by Jeffrey P. Hess and James Dowling says that the name was just made up. One story, never confirmed by Wilsdorf, is that the name came from the French phrase horlogerie exquise, meaning “exquisite clockwork.” In October 2012, Gerrards were pleased to feature two fine examples of Rolex wrist watches in their auction as shown below. The Friends of Fleetwood Museum will hold their Annual Dinner at the North Euston Hotel on Tuesday January 29th at 7.30pm. This event is usually the highlight of the Friends social calendar and there is still time to book your place. There will be a three course meal and the guest speaker will be the Radio Wave presenter, Andy Mitchell. Tickets cost £19.95. Full details of menu and booking arrangements can be obtained from the Museum (01253 876621). Last year was another busy one for the Museum and in 2013 we look forward to two new exhibitions. From April to June we will have an Egyptology exhibition and from July an exhibition looking at the Titanic’s links with Lancashire. The annual Victorian Seaside fortnight for schools runs from May 13th to 24th. Local teachers interested in bringing school groups for that special event, can ring the Museum for further details. New Addition for 2013 We are pleased to announce the arrival of a new addition to the ranks of the Mount Racing Club and a brand new syndicate for 2013. She’s a gorgeous looking 2yo filly by Majestic Missile and really caught our eye as soon as she arrived from Ireland, we had no hesitation in staking a claim in her.
She is in training with Karl and Elaine Burke who have an excellent record with their 2yos and have enjoyed plenty of success with their purchases from Ireland, including the likes of Lady Jourdain and Letstalkaboutmoney. We have every confidence that this trend will continue with our filly and cannot wait to see her on the track
She is an easy moving sort with a great temperament and has been fully broken in and ridden away and is pleasing everyone with her progress so far, a proper early type. She is very well bred with plenty of Black Type in her pedigree and if she turns out to be half as good as she looks we could be in for some really good days out.

I think that you will agree that this is an excellent choice given the current situation. I know every year I ask for your support, but I believe that this cause deserves that little bit more help

Year 8 and Year 9 students at Fleetwood High School were involved in Wyre Council’s “Takeover Day” last week.
Head of Humanities and organising teacher, Mr Lee Morrison, said, “It was an important way of letting students have their say and contribute in a positive way to the improvement of their town.”
The event was organised by the high school’s Humanities Faculty and saw students working with the local council in consultation about how Fleetwood’s Memorial Park should be regenerated.

The day involved a Council Officer, Mark Gillingham, visiting school to present plans for redevelopment of the park to students. Pupils then took part in a planning exercise to offer their thoughts regarding how the park should be re-designed. Stephanie Hodgson who has carried the name of Fleetwood High beyond the school and into the community through her abilities as a singer and Performing Arts student. John Clossick, co-organiser of a popular and successful fundraising concert for Cancer charities with fellow student Natalie Clare, won the award for Exceptional Service Within The Community. The prestigious Howseman Prize for outstanding achievement went to Samantha Eykyn who attained the highest results in the year group.
Fleetwood High School Annual Awards 2012 Fleetwood High School proudly held their Annual Awards Evening this week when the class of 2012 were reunited to celebrate their examination achievements. All students were presented with their examination certificates, and then special awards were received by students in a variety of subjects, some of whom had shown excellent achievement and some outstanding effort. Guest speaker for the evening was Stuart Walker, who also presented certificates and prizes. Mr Walker is a fine example of aspirational success, beginning his career as a Deck Officer Apprentice and moving on to eventually become General Manager for P & O Irish Sea Ferries. He has also lectured at the Nautical College and now works as a consultant. Headteacher, Richard Barnes, said “Although I was only Headteacher for a matter of weeks before Year 11 2012 took their exams, it was uplifting to see so many of our young people succeed and hear that the majority have now moved on to further education.”

Santa and his helper with a local family. In December Fleetwood Rotary traveled around the streets of Fleetwood with Santa and his sleigh. Donations were collected and will be used to purchase 200 food parcels for deserving people in Fleetwood. They also received tinned food which will be given for distribution to the Mustard Seed project at St. Peters Church and West view Community Group. President of Fleetwood Rotary Shaun MacNeill said, “We would like to thank the people of Fleetwood for their magnificent support. Santa was delighted to see so many children waving and talking to him. He is sorry he could not get to the Littlewood, Oxford Road and Park area on Thursday the 6th December but tried to get to some of these areas on the Friday. When Zone Chairman Lion Colin Fosberry of the Kirkham and Fylde Rural Lions Club received a letter of request for help from the Sequal Trust on behalf of 22 year old Blackpool resident Charlotte Bolton, who was born with Cerebral Palsy, suffered a stroke at 18 leaving her with no intelligible speech and extremely limited movement in all her limbs, Scoliosis and hearing impairments, he immediately enlisted the fundraising help of the five Lions Clubs from the Fylde & Wyre areas.
