River Wyre Wildlife
Picture by David Connelly My Photographic work is also on permanent display and on sale at Cleveleys Photo centre, 118 Victoria Rd West, Cleveleys,
Those of us who live in the FY6 postcode area are lucky to have on our doorsteps what amounts to a private nature reserve. I am talking about the River Wyre, which, although short in length, ends in an important estuary teeming with wildlife. The mudflats at the river’s mouth attract thousands of wading birds all keen to feed on its rich supply of invertebrates and crustaceans. In the winter we also get significant numbers of pink-footed geese that come to graze on the extensive grasslands that border the river. And whilst the geese might make too big a target, the smaller birds that crowd the shore make a tempting target for sparrow hawks, merlins and the occasional peregrine falcon. These have recently been joined by buzzards: now a common sight in the Fylde; although I remember a time when

SAVE MONEY ? HELP THE ENVIRONMENT ? RETURN SANITY TO YOUR HOME ? For too long we have been throwing out perfectly good electrical items such as televisions, sky boxes, hi-fi equipment, computers and laptops simply because they have developed faults. Not so long ago a television would last you 10-15years and probably require a service or repair every couple of years. Not so now with televisions lasting no more than 18months. So why not SAVE YOUR MONEY and have it repaired? One problem has been the demise of many local repair companies: many did not keep up with the emerging technologies and simply went out of business. The answer is simple, contact THE ELECTRONICS WORKSHOP LTD, a local company offering the very best service to local people. Can we repair your faulty items? You will be surprised at just what we can repair. We also supply new and reconditioned televisions.. For the price of a local call RING US ON 01253 857819 or after hours on 07973293761

Poulton-le-Fylde may today live in the shadow of its big brother to the west, but in terms of longevity and history, Blackpool is a mere newcomer in comparison. St Chad’s church in Poulton dates back to at least the 11th century and may well go back to before the Norman conquest. Poulton, like Garstang and Kirkham, was a market town. As such it formed something of a commercial hub for outlying farms. KMC TRADING “Kath McBride? Did you she use to work at the Yacht Shop? “ Yes, most people in the yachting world will know Kath, a prominent face for many years at the Yacht Shop, later to become a Manager at FTS Group.
Offering a wide and diverse range of products and services, including Yachting/Marine products, Rope, PPE Equipment, RYA Course Equipment, Chandlery, Flags, Tools and Giftware, FTS is the place to go.. Visit the website www.kmctrading.co.uk for more information regarding products and services provided
But back in February as most people will now know FTS Group sadly closed its doors after 99 years of serving Fleetwood and the North West of England. Not to be deterred by being made redundant, the following day Kath went out and bought office equipment, determined to set up her own business. With the help of trusted colleague, Anita Wainwright, they set to planning and contacting old FTS customers. With a lot of leg work and determination KMc Trading was born, and on the 6th of April 2011 started trading. Kath is a true inspiration to anyone thinking about starting their own business. “It is not always easy and there are many hurdles along the way, but there is plenty of help out there. It has been both scary and exiting but I am confident that we can make it work!”

and learning is promoted to an excellent standard.
There were beaming smiles all over at this Poulton Nursery as it received top marks form education inspectors Ofsted.
“Managers and staff have a commitment to excellence and are constantly self evaluating their practice to maintain their high standards and continuous development.”
Happy Days Childcare on Carr Head Lane was visited by Ofsted inspectors at the beginning of the month, and staff were delighted at their findings.
The nursery takes children aged from three months to five years and is planning a fun day to celebrate the glowing report.
Every aspect of the nursery’s provision was classified as outstanding, and praise was heaped on the efforts of staff and the experience the children have in the centre.
Staff have also pledged to continue to try and improve the service to children and parents.
In her report, inspector Sandra Williams wrote: “Children benefit greatly from attending this vibrant, stimulating and friendly nursery. “All children have excellent opportunities to adopt healthy lifestyles and enjoy fresh air and exercise, as they freely access the wonderful outdoor play areas. “The extremely professional and motivated management and staff group make sure that children's safety, welfare

CARLETON PROMS 2011 This year we will be holding our 3rd PROMS in Carleton and all proceeds will go towards Blue Skies Hospitals Fund for new CHILDREN’S WARDS at Victoria Hospital, Blackpool. The children of Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre deserve much needed new accommodation and resources to give them the best care possible. We have been in our present cramped and dated accommodation for nearly 75 years with occasional modernisations but no increase in space. A stay in hospital is difficult enough for children and their families but with proper, modern facilities their stay would be more comfortable and less traumatic. This in turn helps them to get better quicker and helps the staff to give the best care . We are fortunate that the League of Friends, through bequests, have given us enormous support with the building costs but we still need money to provide state of the art equipment and enhanced facilities.
We are extremely fortunate to have STAR GUEST –JOE LONGTHORNE who has kindly given his time to support this event. He will have his own show –
Joe Longthorne’s Summer Season Extravaganza at the Grand Theatre this year. Diane Lee Carroll , a well known Blackpool performer, will be compering and performing.
in the afternoon and early evening (1.00 pm to 8.00pm). People can bring picnics, drinks, blankets, chairs and gazebos and enjoy several hours of fabulous entertainment. Refreshments will also be available for purchase on the day. Tickets will cost £5 for adults and £2 for children and will be available in advance and on the day. We hope as many people as possible will come along and support this important fund raising event. For more details or to offer support please contact Dr Ned Rowlands on 07815308853, Tess Rowlands on 01253 882679 or Sarah Molloy on 07964416547. We would be extremely grateful for sponsorship or raffle prizes. Tickets will be on sale before and on the day. Prizes to include a convertible for the weekend from Bowker BMW, a glass artwork from John Ditchfield and signed Blackpool FC memorabilia. All contributors can display advertising on the day.
We are fortunate, once again, to have Jane Irwin, an international opera singer, performing for us. ( pictured right) She has recently returned from a massively successful performance in Tristan and Isolde at Deutche Opera House, Berlin. Other acts include Rascuedos, Triple Threat, Baines High School Ukulele Band, the ‘Sing-Up’ children, Carleton Community Concert Band and Carleton Community Chorus. With more acts yet to confirm, there will be a wide range of music to suit all tastes. This is an outdoor event and with the generosity of the Head Teacher and Governors will be on the playing fields of Carleton Green Primary School, Arundel Drive, Carleton. This amazing event will take place on Saturday 25th June
