FIRST DRIVE: PORSCHE CAYMAN In the world of motoring you can never have too many Porsches to choose from. The German firm has been particularly industrious of late, what with special edition 911s and expanding its Panamera line-up.
Thankfully it’s also found time to bolster its Cayman range. For some this coupe is viewed as a mini 911, albeit one from a decade or two ago. Its more focused personality has seen it find favour with drivers seeking a back-to-basics experience but with all the electronic and comfort mod cons of today for good measure. The Cayman is also a good bit more affordable than a modern day 911, although the gap does narrow somewhat when you start ticking boxes for the various tempting options. However, to view the Cayman solely as a cheaper alternative to the great 911 is to miss the point - it’s also a fantastic car in its own right. This notion has been further reinforced by the introduction of an ‘R’ model. Following on logically from the not too shabby S model, you could say the R is aimed at the more demanding and appreciative

of the Porsche fan club. That might appear to be a very narrow section of buyers, but don’t forget that 911 GT3, GT3 RS and GT2 variants boast a considerable following despite their niche market positioning. Granted, the Cayman R isn’t supposed to be a mini-me GT3, but its specification more than hints at the potential for above average thrills - even in the context of an already quick donor car. What you get for you money - a price tag that’s closer to a 911 than you might first think - is something quite special. The Cayman R has lost a little bit of weight and gained a few choice improvements under the skin plus a few extra horsepower. The Cayman’s 3.4-litre flat-six motor now boasts 330 horsepower, which is 10 more than the S. It’s already a peach of an engine, and while it’s in its element being exercised to the maximum it’s also torquey enough to happily trickle through town at low revs. What makes the Cayman R that bit more special is the detailed suspension tweaks. A slightly lower ride height, camber changes fore and aft plus new anti roll bars, spring and damper modifications and lighter alloy wheels all add up to deliver a sublime experience for the discerning driver.

Factor in the car’s already near-flawless steering and the ability to cover ground at a rapid pace while benefiting from the constant stream of feedback through the car’s helm and seat is hard to beat. And considering the cornering forces the car can generate, those seats are reassuringly snug and supportive. It’s true that the ride is a little firmer than a regular Cayman but we’re not talking GT3 RS firm here. Despite the lower ride height and various other changes, the Cayman R is still a car that can be confidently used every day. The fabric loop-style door pulls are a nod to the car’s weight saving programme, although the deleted audio and climate control units can easily be added to the car’s specification if you so wish. Elsewhere, the performance is pure Cayman S - and then some. The car’s standard-fit six-speed manual gearbox is a short-shifting device that’s hard to beat for accuracy and feel. Of course, there’s Porsche’s optional seven-speed PDK ‘box to consider, which adds an extra ratio to boost economy and refinement at motorway speeds. It’s also darn quick - quicker than you or I - and allows you to keep both hands on the wheel and utilise the chunky steering wheel paddle shifters. The Cayman R might be something of a specialist tool but there’s no questioning its abilities. Getting the job done, be it a B-road blast or spirited track day experience, is the name of the game, and this particular Cayman delivers thrills in spades. If you know what you’re doing the car will surprise and delight, but never scare, in equal measure. A finely tuned machine for everyday use, the Cayman R is hard to beat at any price. 22

Your Club, Our Community News
The season has seen our coaching development programme yield good results across our junior age groups. The managers and coaches who have embraced and worked close with our development coaches have seen great results and vast improvement. Next season the club will continue to integrate more development coaches to further improve the squads and support the team coaches.
Presentation Evenings
The presentation night for our U5s – U9s was held on 24th May at Blackpool Football Club. Every player was awarded a trophy for their involvement in the club and we acknowledged the U9s being runners up in the Hogan Cup Final. The club presented an award for the junior parent representative of year (Lucy Turner U6s). The 300 children and parents enjoyed entertainment provided by CJ TAZZ. On the 25th May our youth sections presentation night was held at the Savoy Hotel for age groups U10s to Open Age. Every player received an award for representing the club and main squad awards given by the managers. We celebrated a successful season and the achievements of our U10S Hornets, U11s, U12s and Open Age for either winning or runners up in various cup and league competitions. The main club awards were presented on the night for parent representative of the year (Lesley Leyland U13s), The Peter Hoey Trophy for contribution to development (Scott Macneill U6s), the Volunteer shield (Allen Yates, Treasurer), Coach of

Projects to preach 30mph message Two Blackpool schools have carried out special classroom projects after signing up to support the “Blackpool is 30 or less” campaign. St Kentigern’s Catholic Primary and St John Vianney Catholic Primary have both signed up to support the spring section of the 2013 campaign which is aimed at keeping children safe on their way to class. And as well as urging parents and teachers to sign the “Blackpool is 30 or less” pledge – a pledge to follow the speed limit when in the town – the schools have also incorporated the campaign into their lessons. Teachers at St John Vianney, on Glastonbury Avenue, organised a poster design competition, asking pupils to come up with their take on staying safe on our roads. Meanwhile, Newton Drive-based St Kentigern’s Catholic Primary used TV-style “green screen” technology to create some striking and dynamic images to stress their safety message. Teacher, Emma Harris from St Kentigern’s urged drivers to act as role models to children. “All children have the right to feel safe in and around our town,” she said.

Cllr Fred Jackson said: “I’m very grateful to all of the schools who have taken part in the spring section of our campaign. “They are right to point out that drivers should set an example to our children who are the next generation of motorists.If children learn from an early age about the importance of driving safely and respecting the speed limits there is a better chance that they will go on to be responsible drivers. This is why we do so much work with schools and colleges to instil vital road safety messages from an early age.” Emma Hornby from St John Vianney also urged drivers to slow down. “Traffic speed around our school is of a real concern,” she said. “The risk is greatest at times when pick-up and drop-off activities are combined with high speed traffic.” The 2013 “Blackpool is 30 or less” campaign was launched in January at an event which saw councillors sign up at the Town Hall. In February it was backed by Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, Lancashire Police and the North West Ambulance Service with Chief Fire Officer, Chris Kenny, Chief Supt Stuart Noble and Ambulance Service sector manager, Dave Rigby, pledging their support. In March, Blackpool FC stars Matt Gilks, Angel Martinez and Matt Derbyshire signed up on behalf of the club.
More than 4,000 people have signed up to support the campaign so far. Since the “Blackpool is 30 or less” campaign began in 2003, injuries as a result of collisions on the roads have reduced by almost a quarter from 867 in 2002 to 616 last year.
“Adults should take the lead and support campaigns like “Blackpool is 30 or less” to promote a safer community.” And that message was echoed by Cllr Fred Jackson, Blackpool Council cabinet member for streets and transport.

Our Under 9’s Blades had an outstanding finish to their first season of competitive football, securing a memorable 2nd place finish in Division 1A, but on a fantastic day for BJFF at Fleetwood Town’s Highbury Stadium, managed to top this achievement, running out 6-0 winners against Clifton Rangers in the Final of the Coulton Cup. Seeking a couple of players to add to our Squad for the summer and Next Season, this impressive achievement should hopefully attract a couple of interested players. Congratulations to ALL involved. Our Under 10’s Blades finished off the season in memorable style, taking the Division 1A Championship for the second season running, on Thursday 9th May, and then followed up with a convincing 6-0 victory in the Final of the Coulton Cup two days later, to finish the season as DOUBLE WINNERS. Congratulations to ALL involved. Our Under 10’s Predators excelled themselves this season, taking 2nd place in Division 1B, an outstanding achievement under the management of Craig Ward. WELL DONE to ALL involved. Our Under 11’s Blades took the Division 1A Championship after an outstanding season, participating in 9-A-Side football for the first time, but couldn’t quite do the Double, with a narrow and undeserved 1-2 defeat in the Coulton Cup Final. But, a terrific achievement for an exceptional group of players, who have also recently been Runners-Up in the National Mitre Ultimatch Cup in North Wales, the Spirit of Youth Tournament, and the Blackpool International Cup. Congratulations to ALL involved and best wishes for breaking your Tournament / Cup Final hoodoo in the summer! BJFF – Season 2012/2013 – On the Playing Field – SUNDAY END OF SEASON UPDATE... On a Sunday, in the Blackpool & District Youth League, our Under 11’s Predators 11-A-Side squad won their last game of the season to move into 3rd place, an exceptional achievement under the first year management of Terry Jackson and Dave McFarlane. Buoyed with confidence, a superb Spirit of Youth Tournament saw our boys qualify undefeated for the Semi-Final stages, where despite a battling performance, we exited the competition. Our Under 12’s Predators won their first two competitive games with two stunning victories against Spirit of Youth, by 7-1 and 6-0 score-lines, a number of Under 11’s players providing support, and helping to boost the confidence of the Under 12’s players, who will now look to build on these performances over the summer and into next season. Players are being sought for our Under 12’s team – please contact us if you are interested in joining an up and coming team. Massive Congratulations go to Dave Nolan and our Under 14’s Squad, who, after years of being so close to Promotion to the A Division, have finally achieved this aim, with a Runners-Up finish in the ultra competitive Beta Division, having to Win 20 games, and Draw 2, out of 25 (1 to play) too beat off the competition.

With having almost 500 children as playing members, we have three separate Presentation Events, all to be held at the De Vere Hotel, with our Under 13’s and Above on Sunday 9th June, and two separate sessions on Sunday 16th June, with our Under 8’s in the early afternoon, and our Under 9’s – Under 12’s in the late afternoon / early evening. We have LIVE entertainment and we are always on the lookout for items which we can Auction or use as Raffle Prizes, with the aim to raise funds to support our ongoing improvement initiatives. BJFF in the Community – Schools Coaching Programme Continues.... Our Schools Coaching Programme continues, with our Schools Liaison Officer Steve Spencer delivering high quality coaching sessions in core curriculum time, providing after school clubs, and also offering additional after school coaching services at the BJFF sports hall (3G Astro-Turf facility). Sessions continue to be well received at Anchorsholme, Bispham Endowed, Kincraig, Manor Beach, Moor Park and St Bernadettes. We also have other coaches in place at St Teresa’s and Montgomery High School. BJFF - Football for ALL SKILLS Academy Initiative – Update... Our “Football for ALL Skills Academy” welcomes children who are new to football, or who would just like some extra training, with the emphasis on a fun and friendly environment. Headed up by Level 2 coaches, Joe Rooney and Adam Monk, we have two age-group sessions on a Sunday morning. We welcome Boys and Girls aged between 4 and 8, each and every Sunday, from 10:00am - 11:15am, and then from 11:15am until 12:30pm we welcome Boys and Girls aged between 9 and 13. Trainers, Football Boots, Shin Pads and a Drink recommended. The BJFF Club House, with our new 3G Astro-Turf surface, is on the corner of Kelvin Road and Carr Road.

Our Under 7’s (5-A-Side) and Under 8’s (7-A-Side) play in the Poulton & District Primary League on a Saturday morning, training midweek, and are always on the lookout for new players and coaches for our developing squads.
Each regular participant will be presented with their very own Skills Academy tangerine training kit.
