Does the GT86 fulfil a desire to recapture the purity of a classic sports car experience? More often considered safe and reliable, Toyota has taken a step back to its perhaps more care-free past with the launch of the GT86, a 2+2 sports car for the 21st century. Forget low emissions, low performance and low excitement, this car is about one thing: recapturing the purity of the classic sports car experience. The 2000GT proved to be a big influence on the development of the GT86, a joint venture with Subaru. Built in 1965 and powered by a 2.0-litre straight-six engine, it helped to establish Toyota’s global reputation as a sports car manufacturer, even though only 337 were manufactured. The driver-focused coupe is built on a brand new platform and the remit revolved around three basic elements – it had to be rear-wheel drive, have no turbocharging and ordinary tyres.

The solution was found in combining Subaru’s newly developed boxer engine with Toyota’s latest fuel injection system. The result is the world’s first horizontally opposed engine with D-4S technology.
The 2.0-litre petrol engine, which revs freely to 7,400rpm, produces 197bhp and is paired with a close-ratio six-speed manual or automatic gearbox. The GT86 can sprint to 62mph in 7.6 seconds and has a top speed a shade under 140mph. Economy levels out at around 36mpg for the manual and 40mpg for the automatic while CO2 emissions are 181g/km (manual) and 164g/km (auto).

The GT86 is available in a choice of seven colours with prices starting from £24,995. It’s not just under the bonnet though where the GT86 draws inspiration. During the design process, a perfectly preserved 2000GT was placed in the studio, paving the way for exterior lines and surfaces that are designed not only to look good, but also help the driver to know just where each corner of the vehicle is at all times. It’s certainly good to look at and has definite presence.
The steering wheel is the smallest ever fitted to a Toyota while the driving position is 7mm lower than a Porsche Cayman, enhancing the drive of the GT86 even further.

Its in-house development code was 086A while the boxer’s engine’s 86mmx86mm square bore and stroke are faithful to Toyota’s sports engine history. Even the diameter of the GT86’s chrome-tipped twin exhausts is 86mm.
The ‘eight six’ in GT86 has played significant part in the car’s development, being more than just a reference to its celebrated ancestor, the Corolla GT AE86.
Performance doesn’t come at a price, as the couple has high levels of standard equipment, including automatic dual-zone air conditioning, Smart Entry and Start system, cruise control, Toyota Touch touchscreen controls system, Bluetooth and USB port.

Graham Alexander and his first team squad hosted a ‘meet the players’ afternoon for school-aged children in the Parkside Suite. Players such as Captain Rob Atkinson, Scott Davies, Junior Brown and Jamille Matt were all available to sign autographs and have photographs taken with the children, and a great day was enjoyed by all. Prior to the event, skipper Rob Atkinson said, “This is a great opportunity for our supporters come along and meet their favourite players. I know the lads are looking forward to the afternoon and meeting our young supporters.” It goes without saying that afterwards, he was just as cheerful, and so were all of the departing, dedicated youthful fans. CLUB NEWS Steve Macauley has left Fleetwood Town to return to a job within the NHS. Macauley had served the club as a player before returning as a member of the coaching staff and physio in 2005.

Fleetwood Museum re-opened for the 2013 season on Tuesday March 26th. The Museum will now be open Tuesday to Saturday from 11.00 to 16.00 each day and will open Sunday and Mondays during Bank Holidays. Unfortunately ,the eagerly awaited exhibition Egypt’s Sands to Northern Hills will now not be coming to Fleetwood due to a number of technical difficulties. However we still expect the Unsinkable exhibition about Lancashire’s links with the Titanic, to be staged from June 20th. The museum will be staging a number of events during April. On Thursday April 11th. We will be staging the first of our monthly talks when local historian Gary Thornton, will be talking about Archaelogical Finds at Skippool. This talk, starting at 14.00, has proved to be extremely popular around the Fylde and will be staged in the upstairs

Our 2 year old filly by Majestic Missile has now been officially named as Eva Clare, a beautiful name for what we think is a beautiful looking filly and to celebrate this we are offering two slightly smaller shares in her at a discount price. Each one comes with full Ownership benefits and entitlements which include complimentary Owners badge when she runs, percentage of any prize money she wins, invites to all stable visits and gallops morning, share certificate and monthly newsletter. White Turf Meeting St Moritz in Switzerland is the picturesque setting for the annual “White Turf” meeting where horses and jockeys race round a 6f course on a frozen lake. It is one Europe’s most prestigious meeting and this year we were pleased to hear that our very own trainers Karl and Elaine Burke were to be represented over there with the 7yo horse Tepmokea. In two races he finished a very creditable 6th and 3rd picking up some nice prize money along the way for his owners. Once again this highlights the ambitions of Karl and his team at Spigot Lodge stables to provide his owners with a top quality service and who knows, one day it could be our turn to grab the snow boots and join them in beautiful setting of St Moritz.

New Church at the Tavern This Easter a church with a difference is being launched in Fleetwood - Emmanuel Church West. “We love the town we live in and we want to serve it in the best way we are able”, said Rob Guinney, Leader of this new church. “We are also very pleased to have the support of other churches in the town.” Birthed from the congregation of Emmanuel Church, Lofthouse Way, over 20 people have already committed to be part of the new church but this will be a church with a difference – it won’t have a building! “We feel that the right way to begin this new fellowship is in homes, not in a rented or purchased space and we are thrilled that we have already been offered homes on Larkholme and West View”, said Rob. “We’re starting with two but we hope that we will soon have many more. Meeting this way helps us to remember that the word ‘church’ in the New Testament referred to the people and their relationships, not a building.”
The group is following a pattern created in Sheffield where they now have over ten house‐based churches, each worshipping and serving a different community in the city. The members of each group are ordinary folk who call themselves Christians and who live and work in the area. “Most of us have been involved with church for some time but we have tried to think a little outside the box. We want to make church a place where everyone feels at home because church is about people not buildings.” The first public meeting of the two groups will be at the Rossall Tavern, Larkholme Parade on Sunday 31st March at 10.00am. “We call these meetings ‘Gatherings’ and everyone and anyone is welcome to join us for this, our launch service, and then at our normal weekly services in homes.
