FIRST DRIVE: PORSCHE CAYMAN In the world of motoring you can never have too many Porsches to choose from. The German firm has been particularly industrious of late, what with special edition 911s and expanding its Panamera line-up.

Thankfully it’s also found time to bolster its Cayman range. For some this coupe is viewed as a mini 911, albeit one from a decade or two ago. Its more focused personality has seen it find favour with drivers seeking a back-to-basics experience but with all the electronic and comfort mod cons of today for good measure.

The Cayman is also a good bit more affordable than a modern day 911, although the gap does narrow somewhat when you start ticking boxes for the various tempting options. However, to view the Cayman solely as a cheaper alternative to the great 911 is to miss the point - it’s also a fantastic car in its own right.

This notion has been further reinforced by the introduction of an ‘R’ model. Following on logically from the not too shabby S model, you could say the R is aimed at the more demanding and appreciative 12

of the Porsche fan club. That might appear to be a very narrow section of buyers, but don’t forget that 911 GT3, GT3 RS and GT2 variants boast a considerable following despite their niche market positioning.

Granted, the Cayman R isn’t supposed to be a mini-me GT3, but its specification more than hints at the potential for above average thrills - even in the context of an already quick donor car.

What you get for you money - a price tag that’s closer to a 911 than you might first think - is something quite special. The Cayman R has lost a little bit of weight and gained a few choice improvements under the skin plus a few extra horsepower.

The Cayman’s 3.4-litre flat-six motor now boasts 330 horsepower, which is 10 more than the S. It’s already a peach of an engine, and while it’s in its element being exercised to the maximum it’s also torquey enough to happily trickle through town at low revs.

What makes the Cayman R that bit more special is the detailed suspension tweaks. A slightly lower ride height, camber changes fore and aft plus new anti roll bars, spring and damper modifications and lighter alloy wheels all add up to deliver a sublime experience for the discerning driver.

FLEETWOOD TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB

Alan Goodall says Fleetwood Town can be proud of their first season in the Football League “The season was enjoyable but tough. Our midtable position is a good achievement and we have plenty to build on next season.”

The players are now enjoying their summer break but will comeback for pre-season training on Friday, 21st June. ”I’m going to enjoy my time off and hopefully have a good summer with my family.”

However, the four-goal defender will keep his fitness at a reasonable level for the pre-season workout. “It’s a horrible time pre-season with all the hard fitness work, I hate it to be honest but I will keep myself going and prepare right.”

Another date Goodall will have an eye on is 19th June with the 2013/14 League 2 fixtures are released. ”Some good teams have come up and some have come down but it’s going to be an interesting season next year – a season where I hope we win promotion.”

The new League 2 campaign starts on Saturday 3rd August.

One group of supporters who are looking forward to the new season are the under 16 age group who will enjoy free entry to Highbury for all Football League games.

Chairman Andy Pilley said. “We thought carefully whether to introduce this offer for the 2013/14 season and decided, why not? We’ve got everything to gain and nothing to lose. It means that the people who fall into this age category can enjoy watching football at Highbury, free of charge for the last two home games and the whole of next season.”

FOOD Sea bass roasted with potatoes, tomatoes and olives

FAMILY RECIPES WITH LAWRENCE DALLAGLIO

(Serves 4) 800g potatoes, peeled and sliced 1 large onion, peeled and finely sliced 3tbsp olive oil 300ml hot fish stock Salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 large sea bass or bream 4 plum tomatoes, halved A handful of black olives 2tbsp capers sprigs of fresh basil Preheat the oven to 200C/Gas Mark 6. Put the potatoes and onion in a large roasting tin. Drizzle with 2 tbsp of the oil and pour over the hot stock. Season well. Roast in the oven for 40 mins.

Hunter's chicken (Serves 4-6)

1-2 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, peeled and chopped 200g chestnut mushrooms, halved if large 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 4 chicken thighs 4 chicken drumsticks Salt and freshly ground black pepper 400g can chopped tomatoes 125ml white wine A few sprigs of oregano 1tbsp freshly chopped parsley

Slash the fish two or three times on each side, then place on top of the potatoes. Season again. Add the tomatoes, drizzle over the remaining oil and roast for a further 20 mins. Add the olives and capers for the last 5 mins of cooking. The dish is ready when the fish is opaque. Take out of the oven, sprinkle with the basil and serve immediately.

Heat the oil in a large saute pan and fry the onion for about 10 mins until softened. Add the mushrooms and garlic, and cook until golden. Set aside on a plate.

Add another drizzle of oil, if necessary, and brown the chicken pieces in the pan, seasoning as you go. Return the onion mixture to the pan and pour over the tomatoes, wine and 150ml boiling water.

Add the oregano.

Cover and simmer for 20 mins until the chicken is cooked.

Sprinkle with parsley before serving.

Serve with tagliatelle, polenta or boiled potatoes.

A number of events are due to be staged at the museum in June.

On Wednesday 12th June, the Friends of the Museum will be presenting a Walking Treasure Hunt in the streets around the Museum followed by a Fleetwood themed quiz inside the Museum. Entry is £2 per person. The Treasure Hunt starts at 6.30.

Please register at the Museum entrance. There will be prizes for the winning entrants and light refreshments to finish. All are welcome to join in.

The following day, Thursday 13th June, at 2pm, we will be presenting a talk in the Education Room featuring one of our most popular visitors Dr. Colin Penny, Manager at Lancaster Castle. He has made a number of previous visits and his talk will be Death On The Nile – the story of Hadrian and Antonius. THE MOUNT RACING CLUB UPDATE

NEW ADDITION TO THE MOUNT RACING CLUB We are pleased to announce another new horse into the ranks of the Mount Racing Club and a great new offer for anybody who wants to try their hand at Racehorse ownership. We have acquired the services of a very promising 3yo filly called HOT RIGHT NOW who is trained

by Karl and Elaine Burke at Spigot Lodge.

She is lightly raced having had just the 3 runs to date and proved what a good sort she is when winning on her second start in a race at Southwell. That win came over a mile and with plenty of stamina on the Dam side of her pedigree we think she will improve a lot once she is stepped up in trip. She’s on a mark of 65, a mark we think could turn out to be quite low and is all set to run.

The price per share will be a one off payment of £210 and this will cover everything from her stabling and training to all her race day fees, there will be nothing else to pay. It’s a great offer for anyone who wants to try out the great experience and thrill of Racehorse Ownership. It’s also a chance to enjoy some good days out and hopefully win a few quid along the way.

We only have a limited amount of shares in Hot Right Now so if you want to get involved you can do so by calling Geoff 07852153969 or Andy 07940202312 to order your share. Or if you would like to see her being put through her paces on the famous Middleham gallops and spend a day looking round Spigot Lodge stables you can also do that by contacting us and we can arrange a visit for you.

We are offering shares in her at 2.5% stake and these shares will run from now until August 31st 2013.
