FIRST DRIVE: TOYOTA PRIUS+
By Matt Kimberley
By Toyota’s own admission the Prius name is a bigger brand in terms of green credentials even than the company itself, so expanding the Prius range is the sensible thing to do.
Of course, the roof line has been raised while trying to maintain a recognisably Prius shape, and there’s no doubting the practicality on offer. The middle row of three individual seats (specifically for Europe) move forward and back independently, firstly so that each of the three occupants can get more shoulder room, but also so the available space can be balanced between the two rows of rear seats.
Toyota spotted a gap in the market for a sevenseat, sub-100g/km car, particularly for fleet buyers like car hire companies, and the Prius+ was their attempt to fill it. The lower of the two available trim levels, T4, sits at 96g/km and is expected to take around 70% of sales ahead of the 101g/km T Spirit
The upshot is that, believe it or not, you can get seven six-footers in the Prius+, even if the rearmost passengers won’t want to be there for too long. Nevertheless the practicality and intelligent management of space is thoroughly impressive, and families will find a lot to like.
Even though it works in exactly the same way, the new model doesn’t quite use the same Hybrid Synergy Drive system as the common-or-garden five-seat Prius, because in the latter the under-boot nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery pack raises the load bay and means a third row of seats is not an option.
The five rear seats, which fold flat and create a level load floor, have a brilliant one-hand-one-movement operation, so parents with one arm full of wailing child can still set the seats up just how they need them. The boot lid is a little too heavy to be ideal, but it’s something you work around.
For the Prius+, the new and impressively compact lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery has been cleverly sited in the centre console in the cabin, beneath the arm rest. The boot floor has been lowered and a third row of seats added. 14
With all the seats up there’s 232 litres of space, which isn’t a great deal but can hold a reasonable amount of soft baggage. With the third row folded flat there’s a much more impressive 784 litres, which is more than enough for the vast majority of families. Under the removable boot floor there’s a useful extra space for oddments. Advertise Call 0800 970 7687

If the Prius+ majors on practicality, it does pretty well at in-town driving too. One of the three selectable driving modes uses electric power only as much as possible, keeping urban emissions - and fuel costs - to a minimum. The battery is small compared to that of a plug-in hybrid so its range in EV mode is only a few miles at best, but it’s surprising how well the Hybrid Synergy Drive makes that power last once you’re rolling. Things aren’t so positive out of town. The excellent ride quality from soft, comfortable suspension means that handling falls way down its list of abilities. Equally, the constantly variable transmission (CVT) gearbox that’s gives smooth and quiet running at low speeds can allow the car to feel a little strained when accelerating up to A-road pace. But despite that, the ride is still very good and fuel economy at a motorway cruise is very impressive for what amounts to a 1.8-litre petrol car. As always for a Prius, the seven-seater is crammed with kit. Barely scratching the surface the T4 model features a rear-view camera - although it’s not entirely reliable as a judge of positioning because it’s offset to one side of the number plate and gives a slightly false perspective - a panoramic roof, automatic windscreen wipers and a touchscreen infotainment system. The mid-grey interior trim is designed for an older audience. It’s totally unpretentious and will wear without looking worn. It’s practical and unassuming; perfectly suited to the Prius+ target demographic, but some will call it too bland - or worse.
Facts at a glance: Model: Toyota Prius+ T4, £26,495 on the road. Engine: Enclosed hybrid system including 1.8-litre petrol engine and electric motor; total output 134bhp. Transmission: Constantly Variable Transmission (CVT). Performance: Top speed 103mph, 0-62mph in 11.3 seconds. Fuel economy: 68.9mpg. CO2 rating: 96g/km.
The truth is that this isn’t a car designed for a mass audience. It’s built to satisfy a specific set of needs, and how much your own requirements overlap what Toyota’s engineers were working to will reflect how good the Prius+ will be for you. People who need a seven seat MPV with low running costs, oodles of practical touches and unimpeachable reliability will find living with this car an absolute joy. 16

GREEN DEAL IS NOW HERE!!! The Nations annual household bills have risen by £500 on average in the last five years, and prices are set to continue to rise. How can we deal with these continuing rising costs? The Government are committed to helping and encouraging us to shop around for better deals on energy tariffs, but switching suppliers will not guarantee substantial savings. We already make inroads to saving energy by using energy saving light bulbs and turning off appliances when not in use, which are all helpful, but in order to make larger savings we must consider making our properties more efficient. The UK has around 5 million homes without adequate Cavity Wall and Loft Insulation. Despite the energy saving incentives offered in recent years, over a third of UK homes are still without suitable insulation.

FOOD
THE PRINCE OF POTATOES
By Diana Pilkington There’s nothing like eating seasonal produce to make you feel you’re in tune with Mother Nature, and the Jersey Royal is a good place to start. These tasty little potatoes, in season from April to the end of June, are celebrated for their unique nutty flavour. While purists believe they should be boiled and served with butter and mint, there are plenty of other ways to incorporate them into your cooking. Here are some royally good recipes to get you started... ........................................................ ........................................................
Jersey Royals bubble and squeak
Jersey Royals with hot smoked salmon and watercress salad in a horseradish dressing (Serves two) 500g Jersey Royal new potatoes 100g creme fraiche 1tsp creamed horseradish Juice of 1 lemon 2 spring onions, finely sliced 2 hot smoked salmon fillets, skinned and flaked 1 bunch watercress, rinsed Bring a pan of water to the boil. Add the potatoes and reduce the heat to a simmer and cook the potatoes for about 15 minutes or until tender.
26
Mix together the creme fraiche and creamed horseradish. Add enough lemon juice and black pepper to taste. Drain the potatoes and leave to cool slightly. Add the spring onions and salmon. Stir in the creme fraiche mix until all the ingredients have a light coating. Toss in the watercress and serve, ether slightly warm or cold. Tip: If you can’t find hot smoked salmon use smoked mackerel, smoked salmon or even roast beef
(Serves four) 500g Jersey Royals, scrubbed and halved 125g shredded Savoy cabbage 2 carrots, peeled and cubed 1tbsp frying oil 1/2 medium onion, finely chopped 3tbsp chives or parsley, chopped Salt and pepper to taste Lightly seasoned plain flour for coating 200g shredded ham hock 4 farm fresh eggs 2tsp white wine vinegar Bring a pan of water to the boil. Add the potatoes and reduce the heat to a simmer and cook the potatoes for about 10 minutes. When just cooked, drain and lightly crush.

FOOD the chicken, stretching the bacon slightly. Make sure the bacon joint is underneath the chicken.
Cook the carrots in boiling water for five minutes, add the cabbage and cook for a further four minutes. Drain and add to the potatoes
Put the chicken in an ovenproof dish and bake for 35 minutes.
Heat the oil in a pan and add the onion. Cook over a low heat until softened but not coloured. Combine the onion, potatoes, cabbage, carrot and herbs in a large bowl and mix well. Season the mixture with salt and pepper. Spoon the mixture into chef rings or shape the mixture into four cakes and toss them in the flour to coat. Heat about 1cm of oil in the pan and fry the cakes for about 4 minutes on each side, or until slightly browned and holding together.
Meanwhile, make the sauce. Heat the olive oil in a frying pan over a medium heat. Add the leek and cook until the leeks start to colour. Add the white wine, bring to the boil and boil to reduce by half. Add the cream and cook gently for another 4-5 minutes. Season to taste.
Meanwhile bring another pan of water up to simmering point add the vinegar and carefully break in the eggs and simmer for three minutes. Remove and keep warm.
For the potatoes: bring a pan of water to the boil. Add the potatoes and reduce the heat to a simmer Lemon crushed Jersey and cook the potatoes for about Royals served with 15 minutes or until tender. Drain bacon wrapped chicken and crush with a fork or potato masher - you just want to break (Serves four) them up, not mash them - and 800g Jersey Royal new potatoes, add all the lemon juice and zest, scrubbed parsley and olive oil. Season and 8tbsp extra virgin olive oil, plus extra for fork everything through.
To serve, top each bubble and squeak cake with a pile of ham hock and top with a poached egg.
Serve the sliced chicken alongside the lemon potatoes and green beans and asparagus.
Tips: The ham hock can easily be replaced with crispy bacon. When making poached eggs make sure you use the freshest eggs possible. If you have a number of eggs to poach cook the eggs in advance and pop into iced water. When ready to serve just drop into boiling water to heat up.
drizzling 1/2 lemon, juice only 1 lemon, zest only 2tbsp coarsely chopped flat leaf parsley 4 skinless chicken breasts 150g cream cheese 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1tbsp chopped fresh parsley and chives Salt and freshly ground black pepper 8 rashers back bacon, sliced 1tbsp olive oil 2 small leeks, washed and finely sliced 150ml white wine 284ml carton double cream
Tip: Add lightly fried chestnut mushrooms to the sauce, if you like.
Preheat the oven to 180째C/fan oven 160째C, gas 4. Heat a non-stick frying pan over a medium-high heat. Make a cut lengthways along the side of the chicken breast. Mix the cream cheese with the garlic and herbs and season. Spoon the herby cheese into the pocket in the side of the chicken breasts. Wrap the bacon around

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT, ALFIE? Alfie Boe is sipping champagne in the upmarket bar of the five-star hotel where we meet, dressed in his trademark black open neck shirt, waistcoat and trousers. He has good reason to crack open the bubbly, having had an amazing year last year, singing at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert and performing the Team GB anthem for the Olympics with Girls Aloud singer Kimberley Walsh. But it hasn’t been all plain sailing for the Lancashire lad, who was discovered when a customer overheard him singing in the Blackpool car factory where he worked, and told him about a London opera audition. He got the job with D’Oyly Carte and went on to train at the Royal College of Music, the National Opera Studio and the Royal Opera House. Boe was selected to play the lead in a Baz Luhrmann-directed Broadway production of La Boheme, for which he won a Tony award and, most famously, went on to star in the 25th anniversary concert of Les Miserables.
32
Yet in his quest for artistic freedom, he has had many spats with directors, producers and members of the opera establishment, some of which are detailed in his autobiography, Alfie: My Story.
His tendency to speak his mind is, he concedes, “risky”.
Meeting him today, I half expect Boe to be on the defensive, a peacock whose feathers can be easily ruffled, but there’s not a hint of this from the Fleetwood-born singer, who just seems like a normal bloke. Well, one who now drinks Laurent Perrier.
“I’ve never wanted to be a follower. When it comes to work, I’ve always wanted to be a pioneer, not to just go with the flow and fall in with everyone else’s rules.”
“You have to believe in yourself, in your ability and your ideas and go for it,” he says.
Advertise Call 0800 970 7687
He admits his stubborn attitude may have closed some doors for him along the way.
Boe’s comment may have been biting the hand that feeds, but, as he points out, it didn’t feed him very well for a long time.
“But I would rather have had doors closed on me by people that didn’t Little more than two years ago, believe my vision, because they’re his career was at such a low ebb not worth my time.” he was considering giving up singing to become a personal The 39-year-old tenor had trainer for the Salt Lake City Police been singing professionally for Department. more than a decade before his performance as Jean Valjean in Work had dried up, promises of the 25th anniversary show of Les albums and gigs had fallen through Miserables at the O2 Arena in and he was sick of having no 2010, and his rendition of Bring money and few job prospects, or Him Home, made him a star. constantly chasing that elusive record deal. We became very supportive of me, but she was so close when I stayed with him when tired of waiting for the big thing we were working together.” that would turn our lives around. The following year, Boe courted controversy when he appeared on Desert Island Discs with Kirsty Young and spoke about some of his more negative opera experiences, saying that when he goes to the opera he feels very uncomfortable.
“It was a heartbreaking time. I was very insecure. I was away from my kid, I was away from my wife, I was constantly leaving my family, I had to come back to London to work in an opera and it was a really depressing time. I thought everything was going to come to an end, including my marriage.
“When I’m up there doing it, that’s my world, that’s what I really enjoy. “I wanted to get work in America But sitting there watching it, I’m so I could be with my family so bored stiff,” he said. becoming a personal trainer was an option. It was who said: “If Alfie Boe thinks opera a risky gig as he hadn’t done is boring then it’s very odd that musical theatre before and it had he’s in it at all.” the potential to destroy his opera career. Instead, it made him a star.

That all seems a long time ago. “I don’t think I’ve become a different person when I’m off stage. When I’m at home I’m changing nappies and cooking tea and doing normal stuff. I’m a dad who’s just making a living for his family.” And he likes being branded ‘the bad boy of opera’.
“The opera establishment needs a few more bad boys and girls. Sometimes they need a big kick up the behind, but then there are some in the opera establishment who do have a broader vision of music and the arts. “I don’t call myself an opera singer any more. I’m just a singer. I sing lots of different types of music, but with the voice I’ve been given. I don’t like being told ‘You are a classical singer’. That’s probably been my downfall at times.” Born the son of a factory worker and the youngest of nine children, the young Alfie would listen to Buddy Holly, Elvis and The Beach Boys, took up the drums and played in various bands as a teenager.
33
“I saw myself doing rock music more than I did opera. For me, opera was a foot in the door. That sounds terrible but it was the only way of getting into the business at the time. I still feel like that. I love the operas I’ve been in but something that has taken the lead is the acting more than the actual music.”
34
Critics have insinuated that the audience he attracts isn’t into opera, just chasing celebrity. He argues that as long as they’re being introduced to music, so what?
“My aim is to just show people that there are no boundaries, no divisions. “And don’t be scared of following your dream.”
He believes he still has a lot of work to do to achieve his goal of Alfie: My Story by Alfie Boe is published by Simon & Schuster. bringing classical music to the masses, although he reflects that is no longer his ultimate goal. By Hannah Stephenson

THE MOUNT RACING CLUB UPDATE
Lokis Strike coming back in at Southwell with Luke Morris Lokis Strike
Came back from a winter break with 2 runs at Southwell and finished in the prize money both occasions with a 3rd and 4th respectively. The first run was not the jockeys finest hour and fair play to him as he held his hands up immediately and apologised for it. The second run saw him upped in class to a quite competitive race a 0-75 Hcap and he produced a lot more solid and promising effort. With Luke Morris taking over in the saddle he jumped from the gates quite smartly and was soon on the sharp end where he travelling well. As they turned for home Luke tried to kick on but had no answer for the winner who was simply a better horse and has gone on to win again. Afterwards he told us he was a lot happier with him than when he had previously rode him at Lingfield and said it was the best way to ride him positively from the front. He did advise though that we should try and drop him back to 7f where he felt he would be more effective. The good thing with Loki is that he takes his racing well and seems to be improving for it just like his brother Paradise Spectre did. If he continues like this I’m sure it won’t be long before he gets his head in front and I can see us having a few good days out with him this year.
Eva Clare
She’s is in good order at home and continues to show a pleasing attitude and willingness to learn. We can confirm that she has been given her first entry in a valuable race at the Curragh in Ireland on Saturday 24th August. Although its only a preliminary one at this stage we think that it’s another positive move from Karl and reflects how well she is thought of at home.
Middleham Open Day
It was the 20th anniversary of the Open Day this year and it proved to be one of the biggest and most popular ones that there has ever been. The underlying conditions of snow didn’t deter the crowds as they flocked in their thousands to the picturesque village of Middleham and enjoyed the many attractions on show. The biggest crowd Neptune Collonges puller proved to be up at our stables where Karl and Elaine Burke had arranged for the 2012 Grand National winner Neptune Collonges to be paraded and the 12 year old Grey didn’t disappoint his loyal army of fans.

You may have seen the local papers last month highlighting our success in obtaining an Anti Social Behaviour Order (ASBO) against a resident in the Pharos ward area of Fleetwood. This has helped return the lives of those nearby residents back to normal without the persistent
concern hanging over them about what the evening has in store for them. Our use of these orders is increasing where other interventions have been tried but failed to curb such problems.

As ever we strive to be contactable in as many ways as possible, whether in person, by phone or email, at local meeting halls, out on patrol or at a PACT meeting. This month will see the roll out of your local Community Beat Managers directly updating a Fleetwood Neighbourhood Police Facebook page. This will include pictures of incidents, requests for information and more. Our colleagues working in Garstang and Over Wyre have tried this for some time now and have had many positive responses and are close to 3000 followers, take a look! I’d also like to encourage you all to visit the Lancashire police website and click on the ‘In The Know’
The phone number is 101 for non-emergencies or email us via our Lancashire Constabulary website to get in touch. If you prefer to remain anonymous, you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. You can also call us direct on 01253 604911 where your message will be picked up daily and sent to the relevant member of your neighbourhood team for them to return your call at the earliest opportunity. The next PACT meeting is Saturday 18th May at Aldi on Poulton Road between 1pm and 3pm.
FY7 Community Beat
Hello The lighter nights are now here and with that come a new set of challenges for the Neighbourhood Policing Teams across Fleetwood. More people are out enjoying the longer days in many different ways, and a small number of which come into contact with us. Anti Social Behaviour (ASB) tends to rise slightly and it is our job to prevent that happening as far as possible. I would kindly ask that if you are suffering from ASB then you make contact with us for our help or advice and don’t suffer in silence – we need to know.
