JACK’S STORY CYSTIC FIBROSIS SUFFERER GIVEN VIBRATING BED THAT HELPS KEEP HIM ALIVE WHILST HE SLEEPS A little boy can breathe a little easier after being donated a vibrating bed which shakes loose dangerously high levels of mucus from his lungs while he sleeps. Jack Johnstone, six, suffers from a severe form of Cystic Fibrosis, which has led him to be hospitalised monthly, as he battles life-threatening infections caused by a build-up of the mucus on his chest. Before the arrival of the bed, Jack’s parents Tina and Kevin, 33, from Preston, were told by Doctors that Jack’s quality of life and life expectancy had been reduced after a series of infections caused ‘serious deterioration’ to his chest. But thanks to the donation, Jack’s condition is better than ever and after just one month of sleeping in the bed, his lung capacity has increased by eight per cent. It works by vibrating at different levels on different areas of Jack’s back to loosen the sticky fluid enabling him to cough it up, in turn saving his life. Mrs Johnstone, 38, said: ‘Jack has never coughed up any mucus in the whole of his life. ‘But since he has had the bed, he’s started clearing it from his chest. SUMMER COOKING
Paprika Lamb Skewers (Serves 6) Cooking time: 12-16 minutes Ingredients 675g/1½;lb lean lamb mince Salt and freshly milled black pepper 1 small red onion, peeled and finely chopped 15ml/1tbsp dried mixed herbs 15ml/1tbsp paprika powder
In a large bowl, mix all the ingredients together. Using slightly damp hands divide the mixture into 6 portions. Roll each portion into a sausage shape and mould around 6 long wooden (previously soaked in water) or metal skewers or 12 small skewers. Cover and chill for 20 minutes. Cook the lamb skewers under a preheated moderate grill or on a prepared barbecue for 68 minutes on each side until cooked and any meat juices run clear. Serve the skewers on top of grilled Mediterranean flat bread, a side salad and a dollop of prepared houmous.

with tarragon mayonnaise (Serves 4) Cooking time: 12-16 minutes
Barbecue Tips Ingredients 450g/1lb lean beef or lamb mince 1 small onion, peeled and grated 60ml/4tbsp prepared fruit pickle or chutney 15-30ml/1-2tbsp freshly chopped flat-leaf parsley Salt and freshly milled black pepper Oil, for brushing For the Tarragon Mayonnaise: 200ml/7floz prepared mayonnaise 15-30ml/1-2tbsp freshly chopped tarragon Salt and freshly milled black pepper Juice of 1/2 lemon
If you're using a coal barbecue, have a separate fire that will keep feeding the main one. This way you can cook the longer cooking items first and still have coals for the slower ones. For those who have trouble controlling the heat, try using a gas barbecue which you can control. Remember, the barbecue flavour comes from the food juices hitting a hot surface. This means that a gas barbecue can give chefs as good a flavour as traditional charcoal. Different food items require different cooking temperatures. Looking at the thickness of what you are cooking helps a chef determine cooking time. Remember: Food with bones needs longer, since bone is not a great conductor of heat. Use as little oil as possible and avoid flames while grilling as this burns the meat.
In a large bowl, mix all the burger ingredients together except the oil. Using slightly damp hands shape the mixture into four 10cm/4inch burgers. Cover and chill for 20 minutes. Meanwhile prepare the tarragon mayonnaise; in a small bowl mix all the ingredients together and set aside. Brush each burger with a little oil and cook under a preheated, moderate grill or on a prepared barbecue for 6-8 minutes on both sides until cooked or until any meat juices run clear. Serve in bread rolls of your choice with the mayonnaise and cabbage and radish slaw.
Cabbage and radish slaw (To accompany burgers) (Serves 4) Cooking time: No cooking required ½ green cabbage shredded 4 radishes, thinly sliced 45ml/3tbsp cider vinegar 45ml/3tbsp rapeseed oil Salt and freshly milled black pepper Mix all the ingredients together and serve with the burgers.

Only turn the meat once. This will caramelise the contact points with your barbecue bars and allow the juices to flow. If you criss cross or turn the meat a lot it will become tense. Remember: One turn equals tender! Don't be afraid to use salt, but always salt the raw meat and not the cooked meat. The meat will draw in as much salt as it needs and the rest will drop into the fire. Use corn oil as opposed to olive oil as it has a much higher smoke point. If you're using charcoal, try using a combination of wood and lump wood charcoal. Avoid using fire lighters as they taint the flavour of the meat. Try the old-fashioned method of paper and wood chips! Do not use a fork, ever. Use tongs that are flat and won't pierce that meat. Finally, to test the cooking temperature, throw a bit of water on the grill bars. It should take three seconds to evaporate, any less and you will burn the meat; any more and you will boil it.

Credit cards by Martin Lewis They are the marmite of finance. Credit cards are both the best and worst way to borrow- do it right and it’s a way to get a loan at no cost at all. However, get it wrong and it can put you in debt hell. One of the key weapons in the savvy customer’s arsenal is a balance transfer, which allows you to cut existing debt costs. So, I want to show you the best current deals and clear up some common myths. In a nutshell, a balance transfer card repays debts on other cards for you, so you owe it instead, but at a cheaper rate. As more of your repayments clear the debt, you pay less interest and are debt-free sooner. Currently the longest 0% balance transfer deal on the market is Barclaycard, offering 27 months (18.9% APR after) with a fee of just 2.5%, which for some will work out cheaper. If you can repay far quicker than that, Halifax—while only 15mths 0% - has just a 1% transfer fee (17.9% APR after), so it’s worth considering. Three golden rules to remember

It isn’t just about getting the right card; it’s about doing it the right way. There are three simple rules you always need to follow: With a 0% card, either clear the debt or shift it again before the 0% ends—or you will pay the full APR, meaning interest costs soon mount up. Always pay at least the specified minimum repayment on time each month (preferably more) or you risk losing the special rate. Don’t spend or withdraw cash on these, it isn’t usually at the cheap rate. So those are the basics, but what is a rather simple concept that tends to throw up a huge number of questions? Here are the most common I receive:

Q: How do they decide if they’ll accept me? Cards score your application based on how closely you meet their wish list of what a profitable customer is. So if you’ve had past credit problems, it’s tough. Frustratingly, the only way to find out for sure is to apply. But that puts a mark on your credit file (whether you’re accepted or not). To find your likely odds of acceptance for different cards, use my Eligibility Checker tool at www.mse.me/bts.
Q: How many can I apply for? There’s no set limit on the number of cards you can apply for, but lots of applications in a short space of time can cause problems. If you are credit card tarting (shifting from 0% to 0% when it ends) then this shouldn’t be too big of an issue, as these applications should be spread out.
Q: Will my payments remain the same if I shift to a new card? You can repay what you like on a credit card as long as its meets the set monthly minimum. So the only time your repayments may change is if a card has a different minimum.

While they’re all roughly similar, there can be a difference so shifting cards can mean higher monthly payments. If that’s an issue, check before applying (it’ll be in the summary box). Though remember only paying the minimum means it’ll take an age to repay, so try to repay more if you can.
Q: Can I shift debt to a new card with the same issuer? A card issuer may accept your application for another card, but most won’t allow you to switch debts between their cards. This applies to brands managed by the same firm such as MBNA and Virgin.
Q: My new balance transfer card’s credit limit is too low, what can I do? You can ask for an increase, but that’s rarely allowed. Yet shift the maximum debt you can anyway—the application hits your file, so you may as well use it. See if you can get another cheap card for the rest.
Q: If I spend on a 0% balance transfer but pay it off, do I pay interest? Spending is usually at the standard interest rate of 15-20%, even on a 0% balance transfer card. The only way to avoid this is to clear the entire debt off the card in full at the end of the month. If you repay all of your spending but leave transfer debt, you still pay interest. Get a different card to spend on— preferably one with either 0% on spending if you need to borrow or cashback if you don’t.
Q: Should I cancel unused old cards? Access to excess credit, even if unused, can make lenders wary. Cancelling could boost your creditworthiness, but there’s no hard and fast rule. Before cancelling, if you have debts elsewhere, check whether the card will give you an existing customer balance transfer offer. This can happen (i.e., it lets you shift debt to it at a cheap rate even though you’re not a new cardholder). A few, especially Barclaycard, will try to persuade you not to cancel with £50 cash.
Q: Can I balance transfer onto someone else’s card? For example, can a woman with a good credit score agree to shift debts from her partner who has a dodgy credit record? Lenders, who I’ve checked with, confirm that you can. Though, if you do then you need to remember that the debt legally then becomes yours. There’s no going back.
Q: Do you pay interest on the transfer fee? This varies per provider, but either way it’s usually paid off after your first monthly payment, so the amount’s small.
Q: Can I transfer an overdraft balance/loan to a 0% card? A money transfer lets you balance transfer cash into your bank account. You can then use it to repay the loan, so you owe the card instead. FIRST DRIVE: CITROEN DS5
T
he DS5 is quite the attention-grabber. It’s a strange looking beast, which from some angles looks absolutely stunning and from others doesn’t look right at all. But that’s easily brushed off in acknowledgement of it being a big, quirky French car. So quirky, in fact, that half the switches that should be on the centre console or the doors are on the roof, for that genuine ‘cockpit’ feel. It’s actually a really well designed layout in the main, once you’ve learned what all the symbols on the buttons mean. Citroen has gone to town on making the DS5 stand out in as many ways as possible, and the seats are a prime example of a job well done. There’s decent legroom in the back, but the car isn’t as big on the inside as you might think, so three adults would be a bit cramped on the rear 60/40 split bench seat. Boot space varies according to model choice.

There’s more room in the diesel and petrol models than there is in the hybrid version. The latter takes a hit because of the batteries and motor under the boot floor. Three trim levels will be on offer to begin with, and current Citroen owners might be familiar with the DSign, DStyle and DSport labels. One point worth highlighting is that while the test cars’ distinctive 19-inch wheels looked great, the standard sets on some models are as small as 16-inch, which spoils the car’s dramatic looks. The build quality is outstanding, though. The leather quality is remarkable, the dashboard materials all look and feel very upmarket, and I didn’t touch one thing during my time with the car that felt like it had been built down to a price. Impressive stuff. There’s a dedicated driving mode for zero-emission urban driving, using the electric motor only. In the real world, the DS5 is heavy enough to make it difficult to keep on the motor alone using the default ‘Auto’ driving mode, so it’s good to keep the electriconly ZEV (Zero Emissions Vehicle) mode activated in town as much as possible. What’s really striking about the DS5 is just how easy it is to get on with, whether it’s in town or on a mountain pass. It’s an incredibly friendly, forgiving driving experience that’s very easy to gel with straight off the bat, and with huge reserves of grip it’s also an accomplished performer on the twisty bits. On largely smooth Cote D’Azur roads the DS5 was well controlled, stable and stayed relatively flat around corners. But on the odd rough patch, more typical of UK roads, it did seem to have a lot of suspension noise and jolts through the cabin. Time, and a domestic test, will tell whether it’s an issue. On the whole, though, the DS5 is a very encouraging prospect. It’s likely to offer a lot of ownership satisfaction, and it’s definitely a stylish alternative to premium German cars. Matt Kimberley

“Everyone knows YouTube these days for things such as music and sport, but it is actually far more flexible than that: a democracy can only function if people know what is going on.
Democracy has taken a step forward in Fylde with council meeting videos being lodged on YouTube.
“Use of electronic media is transforming local government. I and many councillors also try to keep people informed through Twitter accounts – many big debates have started that way and debate is always a good thing.”
Videos are now put online within hours of meetings ending. They are a permanent record of who said what on matters ranging from planning to the level of Council Tax bills. Chief Executive Allan Oldfield said: “Viewing figures are low so far but that’s not the main thing: what matters is openness. People can see them if they want.
For anyone not familiar with YouTube, it takes only one click on a computer to connect someone to video clips from hundreds of thousands of other people and organisations. Use is free. Production of Fylde Council’s videos does not cost anything: a camera and microphone are set up at each meeting and the resulting footage is lodged with YouTube the next day.

Tell councillors what you think
More than 1,500 people took part in last year’s survey, the first conducted since 2008. It was conducted online to minimise costs. It showed:
Residents of Fylde have got another chance to tell councillors what they think about town hall services.
• 93 per cent of people were satisfied with bin collection;
Fylde Council’s first residents’ survey was first launched last year when 81 per cent of people said they thought the council gave value for money and that 88 per cent were “satisfied overall” with Fylde Council.
• 93 per cent were satisfied with parks and open spaces;
Councillor Sue Fazackerley, Fylde Council deputy leader, said: “The results were encouraging last time but we are always seeking improvement.

“We are facing tough financial challenges and trying to safeguard high quality services – and the public can guide us in this. “As councillors we steer the council’s money in the way that people want their Council Tax to be spent. But it is the public’s money and we want them to have their say.”

Pansy (Viola) Their velvety blooms in a vast range of colours brighten up spring pots and borders, while the smaller violas provide a more subtle burst of colour in late spring and throughout the summer. Pretty varieties include V. 'Jackanapes', which has bicoloured flowers in deep maroon purple and bright yellow at the base, with purple streaks in the centre, and V. x Wittrockiana in the Ultima Series, which is compact, vigorous and heavy-blooming with medium-sized flowers. They begin to flower in winter and continue through spring, in an exhaustive range of beautiful colours. Pansies, or violas, prefer a sunny site in fertile, welldrained soil.
These hot-flavoured veg perk up salads and summer crudite platters and are among the easiest and quickest of veg to grow, but you'll need to sow every few weeks into high summer for a continuous crop and harvest while the radishes are young, to stop them going tough and woody. Sow summer varieties outdoors from March, choosing a sunny or semi-shaded spot which has been enriched with organic matter and rake the surface to a fine tilth. Sow thinly, about one seed per 3cm in drills 1cm deep, then cover the seeds with soil. You shouldn't need to thin the summer varieties, but keep the plot well weeded and water when the weather is dry. Harvest the radishes when they reach about 2cm across, before they start to become tough. Grown rapidly, with plenty of water, they should be ready in four two six weeks and taste mild and crunchy. If you have limited space, you can grow them in pots or window boxes. Good varieties include 'Cherry Belle', 'French Breakfast' and 'Pink Beauty'.

1940s Wartime Family Fun! On 17 & 18 August Lytham Green will become immersed in everything from the 1940’s era as we see the popular return of the town’s Wartime Festival. Capturing the true spirit of the 1940’s, this popular event promises to entertain and educate visitors of all ages with Historic Vehicles, attractions, music and dance, battles and demonstrations, living history and so much more. As the event this year stretches even further over the expanse of the Lytham Green, organisers are promising that it will be better than ever. The hugely popular Battle Arena will return with ‘Operation Windmill’ as the Northern World War II Association recreate a battle scenario from somewhere in Holland (our famous windmill will provide the perfect backdrop) during Operation Market Garden. Please note this re-enactment will take place on both days and it is advisable that pets are kept away for their own safety. The entertainment marquee will be a lively venue all weekend filled with fashion, music, singing and dance from this bygone era – guaranteed toe-tapping fun!
Once again the popular 1940’s themed memorabilia outdoor market will provide extra browsing time for visitors keen to purchase their own piece of nostalgia. The selection of stalls will include everything from household collectables and vintage clothing to military memorabilia. There will also be a vintage fair at the Assembly Rooms over the weekend. Take steps to keep your dog safe Fylde Council’s dog chief is reminding people to adhere to the law by ensuring that their dogs wear a collar and tag when on the public highway. Fylde Council’s Sarah Wilson is also urging pet owners to have their animals microchipped in a bid to reduce the number of strays on the streets.
A Fylde Council dog warden witnessed both weekend incidents after earlier complaints from a member of the public. Sarah Wilson, Fylde Council’s principal waste development officer, said: “Some offenders think they will get away with it if they exercise their pets at the evening or weekend. “They think our wardens only work nine to five. They are mistaken as we now work early mornings, evenings and weekends when most offending takes place. “We now have many members of staff who are authorised to hand out tickets to offenders.
National figures show that 118,932 dogs became strays in 2012. Sadly, only 53 per cent were reunited with their owners or given a new home.
“Wardens, however, can’t be everywhere so we’re asking members of the public to be our eyes and ears. If people tell us of offending we will go out and investigate. We need to know the times, locations and descriptions and we will take it from there.”
Sarah, Fylde Council’s principal waste development officer with responsibility for the borough’s dog wardens, said: “Warmer weather means that people are letting their dogs out more often just now and it would be tragic if some went missing.

Owners should remember, however, to keep the micro-chip information up to date so that it records the dog at its current address. “A collar and tag is cheaper still, although they can drop off while a micro-chip is always in place. “The collar and tag is even a legal requirement so people should have no excuse to not ensure the welfare of their pet.” .........................................................................

LYTHAM ST ANNES FOOTBALL CLUB ANNUAL PRESENTATION EVENING The LSA YMCA Football Club staged its 2013 Presentation Evening at St Annes YMCA, St Albans Rd last Sunday where over 250 young players and parents packed into the sports hall for the ceremony. Club President Mark Cowburn presided over the proceedings. Special guest was Welsh International defender Rob Edwards, whose clubs he has played for during his career include Aston Villa, Wolves, Derby County and Blackpool. He presented the awards to the eleven boys and girls teams who attended and the following players received team awards: Players’ Players of the Year: Harry Dyer, Ewan Macaulay, Denny Cain, Jack Bishop, Owen Futter, Natasha Webster, Leon Campbell, Grace Hannibal.
Under 15 Loyalty Awards: Owen Futter, Josh Clayton, Tommy Harrison, Lewis Thom, Chris Clinch, Sam Warburton. The Manager of the Season award went to Under 16 manager Carl Pomfret whose team completed the league and Hogan Cup double without losing a game. The Club Person of the year was presented to the Girls’ Under 13s manager Mandy Stephens for her time and effort given in various ways for the club. A special award was presented to Mrs Emmie Cowburn in recognition of her 45 years of support and commitment to the LSA YMCA Football Club.

Andy Murray’s tennis triumph at Wimbledon put a record open air theatre audience at Lytham Hall in festive mood Murray’s success came just thirty minutes before Illyria took to the stage with As You Like It and led to a last minute rush of ticketholders. The audience of over 400 was a new record for a Shakespeare play at Lytham Hall and the performance began with a round of applause and cheers for the first Briton to win the mens’ title at Wimbledon since Fred Perry 77 years ago.
Illyria are back at Lytham Hall on August Bank holiday Sunday afternoon August 25 with the children's favourite Babe the Sheep-Pig. LINK-MAG support all Lytham Hall Events and hopefully this too has had an impact in raising the numbers.
