Toast Café Bar & Grill Restaurant Is the newest restaurant on the Fylde while, at the same time, one of the best established eateries too! How does that anomaly occur? Well, the Corporation Street venue in Blackpool town centre has established itself over the past four years as one of the resort’s newest contemporary cafes and restaurants, offering an extensive modern lunch cafe menu by day and exclusive a la carte fayre from 5pm every evening. Now, owner Richard Caunce has taken all the ingredients of the successful Cafe Bar and Grill Restaurant and opened another slice of Toast Café Bar & Grill Restaurant at the former Joya venue in Wood Street, St Annes - one of the most impressive fronts on the Coast. The original Toast Café Bar & Grill Restaurant is perfectly situated just down from the Grand Theatre, the Tower and the Winter Gardens, away from the hustle and bustle of the town-centre nightlife but close enough if you’re off to the bars and clubs after eating. The St Annes venture was motivated by request of its customers. It has the same wide range of food, from Mexican to tapas; from steak to pasta and pizza and from hotpot and Irish stew to Burgers made from 100 per cent beef and beautiful Thai curries. Richard knows that family members have different tastes and he caters for that with fresh produce and tasty food at the right price. There aren’t many places on the Fylde that can claim the range of dishes you can find at Toast Café Bar & Grill Restaurant. It means that everyone in the family can find something they love to eat - and they love to eat together at Toast Café Bar & Grill Restaurant . Their free loyalty card is a big hit, allowing you to bank starters, mains and sweets for a future visit every time you eat at Toast Café Bar & Grill Restaurant . “Price is important but so is quality and service - we believe that’s why people keep coming back,” says Richard.

21-23 Wood Street St Annes

While the two restaurants have a lot in common, they are quite different too. The St Annes restaurant is licensed for 480 downstairs with a cocktail bar, appealing to more 28 Corporation Street mature patrons. Blackpool Upstairs, there is the Loft Nightclub, open on Fridays and Saturdays. “Many customers from South Fylde don’t tend to come into Blackpool during the season”, said Richard, “they pressed me to open in their area - so we did!”. It’s a magnet for ladies who lunch. Shoppers enjoy a quick turnround but the quality remains the prime concept. All dishes are locally sourced - all the beef, all the chickens, everything! That’s why both have the highest accreditation from Taste Lancashire; an award from Blackpool Tourism and five out of five from the Food Standards Agency. Both venues are ideal for birthdays, anniversaries or larger functions and Richard has introduced a fun way to start off a birthday or celebration: a cocktail masterclass where you can learn to make and drink - your own cocktails. We haven’t even the space to mention their extensive outside catering - but the bright and useful website has lots of information and you can even book a table on line. As you would expect, Toast Café Bar & Grill Restaurant is on Facebook and Twitter. Look them up now and join in the fun.

Residents thanked in £55,000 park plan A £55,000 facelift is on the cards for an Ansdell play area. Members of Fylde Council’s cabinet approved the spending for Lansdowne Road playing field last week, with improvements to include new play equipment, safety surfacing, new landscaping, fencing and seating.

Work is expected to start in April and end by early to mid summer. A comprehensive range of modern play equipment will include a climbing frame, swings and a seesaw.

Councillor Sue Fazackerley, Fylde Council cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, said: “Residents in the area deserve huge credit for this scheme. They raised £6,400 themselves and then organised a consultation among the park’s neighbours and the nearby primary school to ensure that the scheme met local needs. “This masterplan is the result – we wouldn’t have got this far without their input. They had been aware that the condition of the park had been deteriorating for years and they set about doing something. “The existing play facilities are very uninspiring. The new equipment will be far more challenging while the landscape itself will be enhanced through improved planting. “Families in the area will benefit from this marvellous effort for generations to come.” Other funding for the project is coming from Lancashire Environment Fund and Fylde Local Strategic Partnership.

Beauty boost for helpful Jenna Customers are getting a winning smile when they contact Fylde Council for help with bins, planning, parks and housing. For when they call at the council’s St Annes customer contact centre they will always get help – and could be speaking to a reallife beauty queen. Customer service specialist Jenna Howard (23) won the Miss Fylde Coast title at The Sands in Blackpool on Sunday (24 February) and was straight back to work on Monday. As well as fetching looks, the competition’s judges looked for a helpful nature and consideration of others – and Jenna helped 40 members of the public on Monday alone. She and her 13 colleagues help more than 500 people every day and Jenna now looks forward to representing the area in May’s Miss England semifinal. Brunette Jenna, of St Annes, said: “It’s all been a blur since I won on Sunday night. I got into work at the town hall and everyone cheered. I took the crown to work and everyone tried it for size. “I never even expected to be entering the competition until a friend persuaded me to in January – and now I’ve got the title. “I don’t know where it will lead. I’m just going to concentrate on helping people who ring or call at the town hall which I really enjoy and then I’ll see what happens. “Sunday’s judges adjudicated on the grounds of personality as well as appearance – and working with the council’s customers is a great training because our job involves plugging away at a problem until we solve it. The best part of the job is seeing someone come in with a problem and go away feeling that they have been helped.”

down the catwalk.

Helping people can be hard but satisfying work: the council decided to improve customer service some years ago and 89 per cent of members of the public say they are now satisfied with the work of Jenna and her colleagues. In the last 12 months, the council’s customer service staff have helped resolve 103,000 queries. Mark Jones, Miss England regional organiser and one of the Miss Fylde Coast contest organisers, added: “One thing that really impressed us was how Jenna spoke about her job at the council. “She loves helping people and that came across very well. I’m sure she is a great ambassador for the council and will be a fantastic representative for the area in this year’s Miss England contest.” Jenna at a recent fund-raising event at Fylde town hall when Jenna dressed as a tea lady and served cakes and tea to raise funds for children. The Promenade Gardens play area is to receive a £50,000 facelift after councillors voted for major improvements on Wednesday night. The St Annes play area has deteriorated over the years and a number of items of unsafe play equipment have been removed – leaving the site with “minimal” and uninspiring play value. Work will start this spring and will include new play equipment, new safety surfacing, re-landscaping and new fencing and seating. The work is being paid for by Fylde Local Strategic Partnership.

Advertise Call 0800 970 7687

Councillor Sue Fazackerley, Fylde Council cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, said: “It is no secret that the play area has become pretty dull and unexciting for children over the years. The unsafe equipment has been removed: what is left is safe but rather sparse. “Families love the Promenade Gardens and it’s always busy with both residents and visitors. The play equipment is lagging behind the excellent equipment which has been put in our parks throughout Fylde in the last few years. “This programme is about more than just play equipment as it will include new rockwork, hard and soft landscaping and new seats for parents. The play area will not only benefit families, it will improve the entire quality of the Promenade Gardens.”

FULL THROTTLE

Does the GT86 fulfil a desire to recapture the purity of a classic sports car experience? More often considered safe and reliable, Toyota has taken a step back to its perhaps more care-free past with the launch of the GT86, a 2+2 sports car for the 21st century. Forget low emissions, low performance and low excitement, this car is about one thing: recapturing the purity of the classic sports car experience. The 2000GT proved to be a big influence on the development of the GT86, a joint venture with Subaru. Built in 1965 and powered by a 2.0-litre straight-six engine, it helped to establish Toyota’s global reputation as a sports car manufacturer, even though only 337 were manufactured. The driver-focused coupe is built on a brand new platform and the remit revolved around three basic elements – it had to be rear-wheel drive, have no turbocharging and ordinary tyres.

24

The solution was found in combining Subaru’s newly developed boxer engine with Toyota’s latest fuel injection system. The result is the world’s first horizontally opposed engine with D-4S technology.

The 2.0-litre petrol engine, which revs freely to 7,400rpm, produces 197bhp and is paired with a close-ratio six-speed manual or automatic gearbox. The GT86 can sprint to 62mph in 7.6 seconds and has a top speed a shade under 140mph. Economy levels out at around 36mpg for the manual and 40mpg for the automatic while CO2 emissions are 181g/km (manual) and 164g/km (auto).

The GT86 is available in a choice of seven colours with prices starting from £24,995. It’s not just under the bonnet though where the GT86 draws inspiration. During the design process, a perfectly preserved 2000GT was placed in the studio, paving the way for exterior lines and surfaces that are designed not only to look good, but also help the driver to know just where each corner of the vehicle is at all times. It’s certainly good to look at and has definite presence.

The steering wheel is the smallest ever fitted to a Toyota while the driving position is 7mm lower than a Porsche Cayman, enhancing the drive of the GT86 even further.

“The same attention to detail transfers into the cockpit, where focus is on functionality and usability”.

Its in-house development code was 086A while the boxer’s engine’s 86mmx86mm square bore and stroke are faithful to Toyota’s sports engine history. Even the diameter of the GT86’s chrome-tipped twin exhausts is 86mm.

The ‘eight six’ in GT86 has played significant part in the car’s development, being more than just a reference to its celebrated ancestor, the Corolla GT AE86.

Performance doesn’t come at a price, as the couple has high levels of standard equipment, including automatic dual-zone air conditioning, Smart Entry and Start system, cruise control, Toyota Touch touchscreen controls system, Bluetooth and USB port.

In Bloom army receives judge’s pep talk Fylde’s In Bloom army turned out in force when one of the nation’s top horticulturists visited the borough to give some blooming good advice. Former In Bloom judge and former head of royal parks Jim Buttress was invited to the area by Fylde Council. He met 80 In Bloom volunteers at the Glendower Hotel, St Annes – and told them some winning secrets. Involve schools and the community, do what looks good for the town, don’t over-rely on hanging baskets and over-colourful floral displays… Mr Buttress is one of only 63 people since 1897 to hold the Victoria Medal of Honour which is awarded to British horticulturists that the Royal Horticultural Society Council believes deserving of special honour. He has been chair of the Britain In Bloom judging panel and chair of London Gardens’ Society. Councillor Sue Fazackerley, said: “Fylde’s gardeners have made the area the In Bloom capital of the nation – a massive achievement that benefits residents and visitors.

28

“But everyone can learn and there is no better teacher than Mr Buttress. I’m pleased that so many local volunteers came along in a bid to make Fylde’s towns and villages look even better in this year’s competition. Fylde’s record of achievement last year included overall Gold for Lytham and joint “best in category” in the In Bloom Small Coastal Town section. The town will compete this summer in the Champion of Champions category – the World Cup of horticultural civic pride. Honours at North West In Bloom level went to St Annes, Elswick, Freckleton, Ansdell and Staining.

A culture lesson at the breakfast table and a great way to boost your income Given the continuing huge demand for places at UK boarding schools from overseas, Bright World Guardianships, a Sussex-based company, is predicting yet another increase in the number of students joining schools in the UK this September. Bright World Guardianships is a long established guardianship company charged with offering care to international students in UK boarding schools whose parents are not living here. These bright and brave young students are full-boarders at schools but need host family accommodation when schools close for short breaks such as half terms and long weekends. With so many excellent independent schools in the UK, it is likely that an increase in demand will be evident here.

Advertise Call 0800 970 7687

Hosting international students is a very fulfilling and rewarding role. Bright World does, of course, pay a generous nightly rate to cover expenses for visiting children, which can offer a valuable extra income to families. More than this though, hosting a young international student can make their entire experience in the UK a happy one. If you welcome them into your home they will actually look forward to long weekends and half terms and it will enhance their overall experience and impression of the UK. Your own children will also benefit from the exposure to sharing their home with an international student and will learn about new cultures and countries. Think of it as a geography and culture lesson at your breakfast table. So becoming a Bright World host family can not only help pay for your annual holiday, but will also help to educate your own children about new cultures while making a young international student’s life so much better.

For more information on becoming a host family for Bright World Guardianships, please contact: Brian McAllister, Senior Safeguarding Manager by emailing brian@brightworld.co.uk

Fylde councillors freeze Council Tax

“Once again, the council and councillors have been spending money wisely and have managed to freeze Council Tax bills for a third year.

Fylde councillors voted overwhelmingly last night (Monday) to freeze Council Tax bills for the third year running. Annual efficiency savings in recent years have averaged more than £400,000 per year, allowing Fylde Council to freeze bills, protect all services and avoid redundancies for the financial year starting in April.

“The budget set for Fylde in 2013/14 does not require any service cuts, redundancies or Council Tax increase. We will continue to seek efficiency savings as part of our commitment to providing value for money. “All our services are protected and we are not having to make any redundancies.”

Lytham Hall takes top spot Lytham Hall has set a record as the best supported venue in the whole country for summer outdoor theatre. The Grade One Listed Georgian mansion, former home of the Clifton family, will again stage four plays in its magnificent parkland next June, July and August and will be aiming to build on exceptional attendances achieved in the infamously wet Olympic summer. An audience of 750 for the Roald Dahl family show The Twits last August was the best seen at any of the 60 venues around the country visited by open-air touring specialists Illyria. Illyria are celebrating 22 years on the road this year and the summer of 2013 will see them playing Shakespeare’s As You Like It, Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado and Dick King-Smith’s Babe the SheepPig for Lytham Hall fans.

Our cast always respond to such a welcoming Lancashire audience and the quiet sheltered woodland arena is superb for open air theatre,” he said. This year’s outdoor season begins with a premiere on Friday June 14. Chapterhouse Theatre Company, marking the 200th anniversary of the publication of the Jane Austen favourite Pride and Prejudice, open their summer tour at Lytham Hall with Richard Main’s production, adapted for the stage by Laura Turner.

Illyria’s founder and artistic director Oliver Gray feels that his cast is always inspired by the knowledge and enthusiasm of the Lytham audiences which have grown steadily since the first season there in 2010. “Our performances on an evening at the height of

LYTHAM ST ANNES FOOTBALL CLUB As we enter the last third of the campaign the LSA YMCA FC is fairly hopeful of collecting honours at the end of the season. The Under 13s and 16s Boys team are still currently unbeaten in the league and both are progressing well in the Hogan Cup also. The 13s though have a huge backlog of fixtures to overcome and will have to play 15 league games during the next 10 weeks or so which will be a huge and demanding task for the boys. The Under 15s Boys had their unbeaten record ended with a home defeat to main title rivals Layton Clarets but they are still well in contention for league and cup successes.

In 7-A-Side football both the Under 9s and 10s are in 3rd place in their respective league tables and both have a chance of finishing in the toptwo places. Both the club’s two Girls teams, Under 11s and 13s, are making good progress as well with the 13s reaching the semi finals of the NVGL Cup semi finals. The state of the three pitches at the club’s Seafield Rd ground has caused considerable concern this season following the wettest summer and winter for many years. There are signs now though of a noticeable improvement in this situation due mainly to the committed time and effort given by voluntary groundsman Lyndon Moore. ‘Lozz’ Rose Secretary
