Unmanageable debt problems can happen quickly. Financial and personal circumstances change unexpectedly: unemployment, divorce or unexpected bills arrive, and before you realise, you are deeper and deeper in debt. You start missing minimum monthly payments, you are charged for late payments and everything can seem out of control. Afraid to open the mail and answer the telephone, your money problems escalate and stress becomes unbearable. Aspire has helped individuals for ten years. We do not lend money and are not driven by commission earned from arranging loans. We realise individual’s problems are unique:

20

our counsellers deal with the problems one to one, and give the best advice to suit your circumstances. We liaise with creditors to arrange a monthly repayment and aim to freeze interest/charges on your unsecured debt thereby reducing your monthly payments and your financial stress. Our counsellors are happy to discuss your worries in complete confidence. You inform Aspire who your unsecured debts are with, we then prepare a statement of income and expenditure, calculate your monthly surplus income to share between your unsecured creditors and negotiate an affordable monthly repayment programme with them. We make payments on your behalf, acting as a buffer between you and your creditors. We reduce the financial burden and put you back in control of your finances.

If you feel that Aspire could be of assistance, please call today, and you can start the journey to regain control of your finances, at no initial cost to yourself.

The Victoria Hotel on Church Road, St Annes, is the first property to be added to Fylde Council’s List of Assets of Community Value. The hotel has been subject to a public campaign in recent years to prevent its demolition and redevelopment of the site for housing. St Annes Town Council nominated the much-loved local for inclusion on Fylde’s list. Under the terms of the Localism Act, Fylde Council – and other councils – is expected to list land and properties that are deemed to further the social wellbeing or social interests of the local community. However, the Listing must be in response to a nomination by a parish/town council or community organisation.

property would trigger a six-week notification period in which a community group can register an interest in bidding to buy the property for use by the community. Community groups then have six months to compile a bid. The owner can’t sell the property in that period, although he or she is not then obliged to ultimately accept the community bid. Councillor Cheryl Little, Fylde Council cabinet member for Social Wellbeing, said: “Last year’s planning appeal decision removed the immediate threat to the future of the ‘Vic’. The new legislation gives more involvement to the local community if the present owners decide to sell it. “The pub is a social hub for the local community and clearly fulfilled the criteria for Listing. “The Town Council was right to make the nomination and I am happy that the cabinet’s decision will help to protect the future of this valuable community asset.”

Community safety meeting takes to the road Police and Community Together (PACT) meetings were introduced more than 10 years ago to allow residents to meet police officers and highlight crime concerns in the area.

“The council already has a community bus which we will park prominently and which will be a handy point of contact for people to meet councillors and the police. “I’ve long suspected that we don’t always need formal meetings. A quick chat to pass on concerns is all that is often needed and that is what this initiative will offer.

Attendance has declined over the years, so Councillor Cheryl Little, Fylde Council portfolio holder for Community Safety and police are trialling a change which will involve taking the PACT to the public in the council’s “community bus”.

“This pilot has been brought to the attention of Lancashire’s Police and Crime Commissioner who has asked for a report as to how it succeeds in Fairhaven and Ansdell and whether it could be extended across the county.”

Ansdell’s PACT will also take to the roads – the first being held at Woodlands Road Post Office at 1.30pm on 24 June - and the meeting format will be adopted elsewhere in Fylde if it is deemed to be a success. Councillor Cheryl Little, Fylde Council cabinet member for Social Wellbeing, said: “Community safety is always high up residents’ concerns but interest in the PACTs seems to have slackened in recent years.

The community bus is also a handy contact point for members of the public to ask council staff about council services. Inspector Keith Ogle said: “PACT is an excellent opportunity for the public to make contact with their local Neighbourhood Policing Teams to discuss matters of community concern.

“I suspect that the format of a formal meeting is the problem, not the actual subject matter – crime still concerns us all.

Lytham St Annes News

Work starts soon on Fylde’s new infant memorial garden Councillors have given the green light for work to start on a new infant memorial garden for Lytham Park Cemetery. Further change at the cemetery will involve construction of a lakeside pathway to give access to existing graves – and create access to 500 future burial plots. Members of Fylde Council’s cabinet met last night (Wednesday) to approve starting work in June. Councillor Cheryl Little, cabinet member for Social Wellbeing, said: “The infant memorial garden will be a dedicated area of the cemetery - a quiet area of contemplation and dignity to remember the child and give comfort to the parents. “A number of grieving parents have asked the council about this over the years and I’m pleased we can now help them.”

28

The £30,000 garden will measure approximately 20 yards by 10 yards and be situated between the lake and the Old Memorial Rose Garden. It will feature an entrance archway, circular walkway, ornamental paving and hedges for privacy. A further £15,000 will be spent in the future to provide a calming sculpture and seating for contemplation. Councillor Little added: “Grieving Fylde parents have not had anywhere to remember lost infants. The new garden will be suitable for the scattering of ashes and will also feature a memorial wall. “One parent, Nicola Duerden, has campaigned tirelessly for this memorial garden and I know that grieving parents in the future will appreciate her efforts. Nicola is also helping to raise money for the sculpture: she is a first-class citizen. “The extra burial plots is a separate project. Cemeteries do eventually run out of space and Lytham Park currently only has enough space to last for 15 years. “Building this new lakeside pathway will benefit visitors to existing graves and also guarantee a dignified resting place for the future.”

FIRST DRIVE: PORSCHE CAYMAN In the world of motoring you can never have too many Porsches to choose from. The German firm has been particularly industrious of late, what with special edition 911s and expanding its Panamera line-up. Thankfully it’s also found time to bolster its Cayman range. For some this coupe is viewed as a mini 911, albeit one from a decade or two ago. Its more focused personality has seen it find favour with drivers seeking a back-to-basics experience but with all the electronic and comfort mod cons of today for good measure. The Cayman is also a good bit more affordable than a modern day 911, although the gap does narrow somewhat when you start ticking boxes for the various tempting options. However, to view the Cayman solely as a cheaper alternative to the great 911 is to miss the point - it’s also a fantastic car in its own right. This notion has been further reinforced by the introduction of an ‘R’ model. Following on logically from the not too shabby S model, you could say the R is aimed at the more demanding and appreciative 32

of the Porsche fan club. That might appear to be a very narrow section of buyers, but don’t forget that 911 GT3, GT3 RS and GT2 variants boast a considerable following despite their niche market positioning. Granted, the Cayman R isn’t supposed to be a mini-me GT3, but its specification more than hints at the potential for above average thrills - even in the context of an already quick donor car. What you get for you money - a price tag that’s closer to a 911 than you might first think - is something quite special. The Cayman R has lost a little bit of weight and gained a few choice improvements under the skin plus a few extra horsepower. The Cayman’s 3.4-litre flat-six motor now boasts 330 horsepower, which is 10 more than the S. It’s already a peach of an engine, and while it’s in its element being exercised to the maximum it’s also torquey enough to happily trickle through town at low revs. What makes the Cayman R that bit more special is the detailed suspension tweaks. A slightly lower ride height, camber changes fore and aft plus new anti roll bars, spring and damper modifications and lighter alloy wheels all add up to deliver a sublime experience for the discerning driver.

Factor in the car’s already near-flawless steering and the ability to cover ground at a rapid pace while benefiting from the constant stream of feedback through the car’s helm and seat is hard to beat. And considering the cornering forces the car can generate, those seats are reassuringly snug and supportive. It’s true that the ride is a little firmer than a regular Cayman but we’re not talking GT3 RS firm here. Despite the lower ride height and various other changes, the Cayman R is still a car that can be confidently used every day. The fabric loop-style door pulls are a nod to the car’s weight saving programme, although the deleted audio and climate control units can easily be added to the car’s specification if you so wish. Elsewhere, the performance is pure Cayman S - and then some. The car’s standard-fit six-speed manual gearbox is a short-shifting device that’s hard to beat for accuracy and feel. Of course, there’s Porsche’s optional seven-speed PDK ‘box to consider, which adds an extra ratio to boost economy and refinement at motorway speeds. It’s also darn quick - quicker than you or I - and allows you to keep both hands on the wheel and utilise the chunky steering wheel paddle shifters. The Cayman R might be something of a specialist tool but there’s no questioning its abilities. Getting the job done, be it a B-road blast or spirited track day experience, is the name of the game, and this particular Cayman delivers thrills in spades. If you know what you’re doing the car will surprise and delight, but never scare, in equal measure. A finely tuned machine for everyday use, the Cayman R is hard to beat at any price. 34

Facts at a glance: Model: Porsche Cayman R, from £51,728 on the road or £53,731 for PDK gearbox variant. Engine: 3.4-litre petrol unit developing 330bhp. Transmission: 6-speed manual transmission as standard, driving the rear wheels. Performance: Maximum speed 175mph, 0-62mph 5.0 seconds. Economy: 29.1mpg. CO2 Rating: 228g/km.

Big Success for compost giveaway

“Recycling is good for gardens and good for people’s pockets. Fylde people are keen recyclers and over 46 per cent of household waste is now recycled.”

Fylde’s garden waste went full circle when five tonnes of compost were given to the public at Fairhaven Lake on Tuesday morning.

The compost is formed of food as well as garden waste: people have been able to put their food into the recycling green bin for the last two years now.

Thirty keen gardeners were already in a queue for the compost giveaway when staff arrived to assist with shovelling it into bags.

All types of foods, except oil and liquid, can now be recycled in the green bin. Fylde Council staff will be on hand with recycling advice and tips for residents.

The compost was going back to where it belongs – Fylde’s gardeners give the council their garden waste, the council recycles it into compost and the sweet-smelling stuff then goes back to gardens. Sarah Wilson, Fylde Council’s principal waste development officer, said: “There’s always a rush when we give compost away. The entire five tonnes went within 30 minutes. “It’s a virtuous circle: residents give their garden and food waste to us. We then return it to help make their gardens flourish. “It saves everyone money: the more we send to landfill means the more Landfill Tax that citizens must pay through their Council Tax.

“We’re all very excited about the pageant which will be entirely unrelated to recruitment. It will be an enjoyable day out that we hope will give people an insight into military life.

An Armed Forces display is planned for the St Annes promenade to mark the end of this year’s Armed Forces Week.

“I’m hoping that Paralympics star Shelly Woods will judge the wheelchair race and that BAe will fly a Typhoon over at some stage. I also look forward to some of the food from the army kitchen.

It is hoped that the 29 June pageant, in the vicinity of the pier, will include a cadet “mock battle”, stalls from a range of organisations, a high-wire slide, a climbing wall, a military band and wheelchair race for disabled service veterans. The pageant will mark the end of Armed Forces Week which was marked last year by the signing of the borough’s Armed Forces Covenant which commits Fylde Council, housing associations, the police and NHS to working together to help service-people. Councillor Edward Nash, Fylde Council’s Armed Forces member and a former soldier, said: “Work on the covenant is moving ahead quickly. Too many veterans struggle to adapt to civilian life – many organisations in Fylde are now committed to giving them extra help.

“We have at least 6,000 former service-people in Fylde. Most have settled back well into civilian life but even if only 10 per cent are struggling, it amounts to 600 people who need help with training, work, benefits and medical assistance. “I know that Fylde people appreciate their efforts on our behalf and will be keen to support Armed Forces Week.” The week’s activities start on Monday 24 June when the Armed Forces flag will be run up the town hall flagpole. Lady Shuttleworth (representing the Lord Lieutenancy Office) will present the flag. Councillor Linda Nulty, Fylde mayor, will present veterans’ badges.

GREEN DEAL IS NOW HERE!!! The Nations annual household bills have risen by £500 on average in the last five years, and prices are set to continue to rise. How can we deal with these continuing rising costs? The Government are committed to helping and encouraging us to shop around for better deals on energy tariffs, but switching suppliers will not guarantee substantial savings. We already make inroads to saving energy by using energy saving light bulbs and turning off appliances when not in use, which are all helpful, but in order to make larger savings we must consider making our properties more efficient. The UK has around 5 million homes without adequate Cavity Wall and Loft Insulation. Despite the energy saving incentives offered in recent years, over a third of UK homes are still without suitable insulation.

HEAVENLY HERBS

So many herbs and so little space, those with small gardens might say, but there is always room for a pot or two or even a windowbox of aromatic, flavoursome herbs which will enhance your menus whatever the time of year. Many herbs thrive in sunnier climates including thyme, rosemary and basil, which historically hasn’t grown very well in this country because our summers have been too cool. Mint grows virtually anywhere, but if you are creating a herb garden, grow it in a pot or it will invade everything else in its path. If you want your herb garden to look more formal, consider planting dwarf hedges of rosemary or lavender around the edges, or to divide beds. Lavender can simply be sheared after flowering to keep it looking neat and tidy, but don’t cut into old wood or it won’t grow back. Standard bays placed in pots either side of a front door or other entrance can create a formal, stylish look and you can also snip the leaves off for adding to pasta sauces and casseroles. When designing your herb garden, remember that prostrate varieties such as Corsican mint, many thymes and marjorams form mats of pretty foliage to cascade over edges and fill gaps in paving. And don’t think you have to reserve a whole plot just for herbs. You can interplant them in your border to add colour and texture. Clumps of chives, which produce pretty purple flower balls, and sage, with its subtle leaf colours, are ideal for this. Rock gardens, with gritty, well-drained soil, are also a perfect setting for low-growing herbs such as thyme, of which there are endless varieties, many of which have variegated leaves and produce small flowers in summer. 40

GARDENING By Hannah Stephenson

Herbs create the tastes of summer - basil torn over juicy, mouth-watering tomatoes, dill added to simple fish dishes, chicken stuffed with thyme, coriander added to zingy salsas, mint and parsley chopped up in tabbouleh and other salad dishes. Basil, which tastes so much better if you grow it yourself than if you buy it from the supermarket, is a tender annual used in much Mediterranean cooking and loves the sunshine. It’s best sown into seed trays or modules in a greenhouse and then hardened off and transplanted into a sheltered, sunny spot when all danger of frost has passed. It does well in pots on sun-baked patios but should be watered whenever dry and the growing tips pinched out regularly to encourage bushy growth and delay flowering. If you are using it, harvest the leaves at the tip of the plant to encourage further bushy growth at the sides. Sweet basil and bush basil are the common types grown, but you could also try cinnamon basil, anise basil and lemon basil. Flat-leaf parsley is much more popular these days than the curly-leaf variety because of its more intense flavour. Usually grown as an annual, it can be sown thinly outdoors in rich, moist soil in late spring and again in late summer for succession over winter. Try ‘Giant Italian’ for good flavour. Perennials including chives, sorrel, fennel and mint should come up year after year. Annual herbs which need to be raised from seed each year include dill, coriander, chervil and borage. These are best germinated in a greenhouse in spring. The majority of herbs thrive in sunny, sheltered spots. If you only have a semi-shaded spot available, try growing scented lemon balm, which can be used to flavour sauces for chicken and fish, lovage, a hardy perennial which has a flavour similar to celery and angelica, a giant herb growing to several metres which can be used to flavour cakes and cooked fruit.

GARDENING Good enough to eat...

Best of the bunch...

Sumptuous

Peony

Well-known for their huge blooms in late spring and early summer, these blousy perennials will add a romantic, feminine touch to any border. They take a couple of seasons to settle down and produce flowers, hate being moved and prefer an open sunny spot, sheltered from cold winds - but the reward is a vast array of large blooms in colours from cream to deep red. The common peony, P. officinalis, is a cottage garden favourite, growing 60cm (2ft) high and producing 12cm (5in) blooms in a variety of shades, flowering in May and June. The most popular are P. lactiflora, which flower in June. Good scented varieties include ‘Duchesse de Nemours’ or ‘Sarah Bernhardt’. For big, bold flowers, go for ‘Bowl of Beauty’, which produces pink flowers with a cream centre. Others to watch out for include ‘Peter Brand’, which produces deep red blooms and whose foliage turns red in autumn, contrasting well with ornamental grasses and bearded irises. Peonies need mulching in spring, staking and feeding with a general fertiliser in late summer. The stems should be cut down to ground level in autumn.

Strawberries

With Wimbledon almost upon us, strawberries and cream are the order of the day. Even beginner gardeners have no excuse not to grow a few strawberry plants, even if they are only in pots or hanging baskets. Strawberry plants are cheap and can be planted directly into garden soil or raised beds, and will normally last for three or four years before they need replacing. They like fertile, well-drained soil with plenty of added organic matter, and are better off in a sunny spot. Water well while the plants are establishing, and also in hot, dry weather and when the fruits are swelling. Once the fruits have formed, avoid watering plants overhead as this can lead to grey mould. Tuck clean straw under developing fruits to protect them from soil splash. Some people grow strawberries through plastic sheet mulches, which warm the soil and may bring forward cropping. Others use fibre mats which can be put around each plant and protect late fruits in autumn from rain and cold weather.

3 ways to... Nuture nature in your hedge

Be kind to hedgehogs and leaflitter invertebrates by pushing small hedge trimmings under the hedge and leaving them to rot.

2

Encourage the holly blue butterfly by growing flowering holly and flowering ivy, as the caterpillars feed on the buds of these plants.

3

Don’t trim hedges during the bird-nesting season between March and the end of August.

A culture lesson at the breakfast table and a great way to boost your income Given the continuing huge demand for places at UK boarding schools from overseas, Bright World Guardianships, a Sussex-based company, is predicting yet another increase in the number of students joining schools in the UK this September. Bright World Guardianships is a long established guardianship company charged with offering care to international students in UK boarding schools whose parents are not living here. These bright and brave young students are full-boarders at schools but need host family accommodation when schools close for short breaks such as half terms and long weekends. With so many excellent independent schools in the UK, it is likely that an increase in demand will be evident here.

Hosting international students is a very fulfilling and rewarding role. Bright World does, of course, pay a generous nightly rate to cover expenses for visiting children, which can offer a valuable extra income to families. More than this though, hosting a young international student can make their entire experience in the UK a happy one. If you welcome them into your home they will actually look forward to long weekends and half terms and it will enhance their overall experience and impression of the UK. Your own children will also benefit from the exposure to sharing their home with an international student and will learn about new cultures and countries. Think of it as a geography and culture lesson at your breakfast table. So becoming a Bright World host family can not only help pay for your annual holiday, but will also help to educate your own children about new cultures while making a young international student’s life so much better.

For more information on becoming a host family for Bright World Guardianships, please contact: Brian McAllister, Senior Safeguarding Manager by emailing brian@brightworld.co.uk

A RECRUITMENT drive for members is the top priority for new Lytham Round Table chairman Adrian Banks. Mr Banks was installed with his chain of office by retiring chairman Roger Burne at the charity organisation’s annual meeting held at Fylde Rugby Club. He takes over during the milestone 75th anniversary year of the Lytham club – which promotes fun, fundraising and fellowship for men, aged 18 to 45. Lytham Round Table organises the annual firework spectacular at Fylde Rugby Club each Bonfire night and takes Santa on a traditional Christmas tour of Lytham St Annes streets. Last year the two events raised £14,000 for local charities. However the club is currently facing a crisis with only a handful of members to continue their good work.

School, Lytham, and they live in Highbury Road East, St, Annes. They have two children, Lucy, 13, a pupil at St Bedes RC High School, Lytham, and Jessica, 10, who goes to St Peters. James Romer was presented with the Tabler of the year trophy at the annual meeting and was later elected vice chairman with Justin Kimber appointed secretary and Roger Burne, treasurer.

Businesses are being put in the driving seat in Fylde’s £100,000 programme to revitalise town centres. Shop owners, business owners, even community groups are invited to bid for a grant from the £100,000 pot – so long as their project is designed to increase town-centre business activity. Fylde’s £100,000 High Street Innovation Fund (HSIF) pot came from Whitehall last year after retail queen Mary Portas bemoaned the sluggish state of the nation’s town centres. In Fylde, councillors are devolving control of the money to business people themselves with membership being comprised of representatives from Kirkham and Wesham Business Group; Lytham Business Partnership and St Annes Chamber of Trade. Fylde Council, Kirkham Town Council and St Annes Town Council will also be represented. Councillor David Eaves, Fylde Council leader, said: “We’re putting businesspeople from every corner of Fylde in charge. They, and the council representatives, will form a panel to which individual businesses and groups can bid for financial support. “The criteria are very broad. It could be training support for a particular business or it could be a more general improvement scheme that will make the town centres more attractive and, as a result, attract more people to visit. “It could be money for marketing help or it could even be advertising out of the area to attract people here. Businesses know better than councillors what they need – practical experience is always the best way ahead.” Fylde’s HSIF panel will meet quarterly – the first meeting will be in June - to decide which bids to back. There is no minimum or maximum limit for bids, although bidders must “matchfund” the grant on a pound for pound basis.

Councillor Elaine Silverwood, representing Kirkham and Wesham Business Group on the new panel and herself a shop owner, said: “Businesses know every inch of the High Street and know exactly what is needed for their area. “The money is now in place and I would urge town centre businesses to make their bid for it. It is now up to them to make strong bids that offer long-term value for the town centres.” Andrew Fallow, representing Lytham Business Partnership on the panel, said: “This is a great opportunity to start some good projects in town centres in every part of Fylde. “We can make a relatively small amount of money go a long way if good projects come through. If they have a long-term legacy, so much the better. “This could be about direct help for businesses or wider help to improve the town centre environment to increase the vibrancy of the town centre. This is a win-win opportunity and we must not miss out.”

Ideas wanted for £100,000 business boost

Representing St Annes Chamber of Trade, John Moxham added: “The Chamber has been promoting this idea for some time already and I’m sure that funding bids will come in thick and fast. “We have made the process as simple and transparent as possible, so that businesses, community groups and individuals can secure money for the best projects.”

Details of Fylde’s HSIF project and information on how to apply for a grant can be seen at: www.fylde. gov.uk/hsif The HSIF panel which will decide grant applications will meet on: • Wednesday 5 June, 6.30pm. Closing date for grant applications 29 May; • Wednesday 4 September, 6.30pm. Closing date for grant applications 18 August; • Wednesday 4 December, 6.30pm. Closing date for grant applications 17 Nov.

Volunteer time, however, can be allowed as matchfunding.

Lytham St Annes News

LYTHAM ST ANNES FOOTBALL CLUB What seems to have been a long and difficult season has now finally come to a conclusion and I think everybody involved in junior football is probably ready for a welcome break. It has been a harsh winter with relentless rain followed by a lengthy cold spell which extended well into spring and seriously disrupted fixtures. The YMCA FC’s season though finished on a high with the Under 15s and 16s both winning Hogan Cup trophies at Bloomfield Rd. For the 16s this completed a 2nd successive league and cup double with an unbeaten record and the club’s Under 13s won their league championship and also went through the season undefeated. Never before have two YMCA teams gone through an entire season without losing a game. The Under 14s won the Hogan Plate and the 10s were beaten finalists

in the PDP 7-a-side League’s Coulton Cup final. The club’s two Girls Teams, Under 11s and 13s have had very encouraging campaigns and in non-competitive boys football the club’s Under 7s and 8s and progressing well and showing considerable promise. During May the club’s ground at Seafield Rd Lytham staged a Disability Team tournament consisting of teams from throughout Lancashire and was also the venue for the PDPL Plate finals plus the South Fylde Primary Schools’ Lytham Rotary Cup Final. With the season ending later than normal because of these events and fixture congestion this will be a shorter summer break than normal. Much work will need to be carried out on pitch renovation because before we know it, a new season will be upon us. ‘Lozz’ Rose Secretary
