Preston City Council has appointed North West contractors Maysand to renovate the city’s Cenotaph in preparation for the centenary of the First World War. Leaders in their field, Maysand have sympathetically restored a number of major projects throughout the UK since 1992. The restoration and extension to the Cenotaph, funded through an award from the Heritage Lottery Fund of £835,600, began on Monday 29 April and will be completed in time for this year’s Remembrance Day. The restoration of Sir Giles Gilbert Scott’s original design will include an inscription commemorating those service personnel from Preston who have sadly lost their lives since 1945. This number is a staggering 114 men in 47 armed conflicts around the world. Councillor Peter Rankin, Leader of Preston City Council, said: “Preston’s War Memorial stands as a moving reminder of the great loss of life during conflicts. We are really proud to be one of the facilitators of this project that will not only see the

memorial restored but also ensure the continued legacy of remembrance for future generations.” Bryn Lisle, Managing Director at Maysand, added: “We are delighted to be involved in a project that is so important to the people and the city of Preston. “We are highly experienced in this type of work, having recently completed a similar restoration project to a war memorial in Ashton Gardens at Lytham St Anne’s, and we will look forward to being able to restore the Cenotaph in Preston to its rightful condition, making it a focal point of remembrance for generations to come.” Colonel Bernard Stam, President of the Preston and District Veterans Council, also commented on the restoration: “This project is very important and means a lot to local veterans and their families. “The Cenotaph and War Memorial are a wonderful part of the city centre and a fitting tribute to all those from Preston that served and died for their country. Next year sees the centenary of the outbreak of World War 1 and it is important that people remember the horrors and also the sacrifices of war. We would like to thank all those concerned for their support in taking this project forward.”

The Friends of Avenham and Miller Parks group have made a donation and bought a bench to commemorate Preston Guild 2012. Recently, the council has received several requests from members of the public wishing to make a donation for a memorial or commemorative bench with a brass plaque displaying a dedication or family-related message. Due to the number of such requests, provision has been made for a limited number of bench spaces in the parks for this purpose. Councillor Robert Boswell, cabinet member for environment, said: “The suggestion from members of the public for memorial and commemorative benches was embraced by the council as well as by management and staff at the parks. “The peaceful and tranquil location is perfect as people have many happy memories of spending

time with the family in these beautiful parks, and the dedicated messages engraved on the plaques reflect those sentiments. Some of the most impressive vistas available in the parks have been set aside as locations for the publicly donated benches.” In a tribute to Preston Guild 2012, one of the benches now has a brass plaque from the Friends of Avenham and Miller Parks group. Father Timothy Lipscomb, chair of the group, added: “The parks were a fantastic backdrop to many Guild celebrations in 2012 and the friends group decided a commemorative bench would be a lasting homage to the wonderful memories of the thousands who visited Preston last year.”

15,000 more homes join Preston’s Recycling Revolution More than 15,000 homes across Preston are to join the city’s recycling revolution.
“Once again Preston is leading the way and we are proud to be a city that recycles. Soon over 30,000 homes across Preston will have easy to use wheeled bins for their recycling. “It’s about making it as easy as possible to recycle and we’ve introduced these new recycling bins as a direct result of listening to people asking for a better, more convenient recycling service.
From 28th May 2013, new wheeled bins for recycling will be delivered to properties in the Ashton, Broughton, Fulwood, Ingol and Ribbleton areas of the city.
“We’re investing £2.5m so that over the next three years new recycling bins will be in place across Preston. This will not only make it easier for people to recycle but will also make a massive difference to the local and global environment.
