Preston City Council has appointed North West contractors Maysand to renovate the city’s Cenotaph in preparation for the centenary of the First World War. Leaders in their field, Maysand have sympathetically restored a number of major projects throughout the UK since 1992. The restoration and extension to the Cenotaph, funded through an award from the Heritage Lottery Fund of £835,600, began on Monday 29 April and will be completed in time for this year’s Remembrance Day. The restoration of Sir Giles Gilbert Scott’s original design will include an inscription commemorating those service personnel from Preston who have sadly lost their lives since 1945. This number is a staggering 114 men in 47 armed conflicts around the world. Councillor Peter Rankin, Leader of Preston City Council, said: “Preston’s War Memorial stands as a moving reminder of the great loss of life during conflicts. We are really proud to be one of the facilitators of this project that will not only see the
memorial restored but also ensure the continued legacy of remembrance for future generations.” Bryn Lisle, Managing Director at Maysand, added: “We are delighted to be involved in a project that is so important to the people and the city of Preston. “We are highly experienced in this type of work, having recently completed a similar restoration project to a war memorial in Ashton Gardens at Lytham St Anne’s, and we will look forward to being able to restore the Cenotaph in Preston to its rightful condition, making it a focal point of remembrance for generations to come.” Colonel Bernard Stam, President of the Preston and District Veterans Council, also commented on the restoration: “This project is very important and means a lot to local veterans and their families. “The Cenotaph and War Memorial are a wonderful part of the city centre and a fitting tribute to all those from Preston that served and died for their country. Next year sees the centenary of the outbreak of World War 1 and it is important that people remember the horrors and also the sacrifices of war. We would like to thank all those concerned for their support in taking this project forward.”

Staff at Preston City Council will take on staff from the University of Central Lancashire and other businesses in the Preston City Games on Saturday 8 June. The Games will build on the legacy of the fantastic Guild last year and the 100 events the city staged as part of the European City of Sport status. Organised in partnership between Preston City Council, University of Central Lancashire, Preston College and North West Chamber of Commerce, the multi-sport one day event is aimed at businesses in Preston and surrounding areas. The Games will see individuals and teams competing in 9 different sports. You don’t have to be of Olympic standard – joining in and having fun are the main aims of the games.
“A challenge to the staff of our partners at UCLan seemed obvious for the Games. The City Council have around a dozen teams to enter and UCLan have the same. The boost to management and staff will revive the spirit seen at Guild events last year, and that is exactly what we want to achieve.” Adrian Ibbetson, Academic Director of Sport at UCLan, added: “I am more than happy to accept this challenge from the council at the City Games. “UCLan work in partnership with the council on many fronts and this, dare I say, friendly competition between staff will strengthen the relationship even more. I cannot wait for the Games to begin.”

Energy Saving Success Preston is now one of the greenest Councils in the UK, having driven down energy use to record low levels. Council electricity use has fallen from 9942 (five years ago) to just 7284 Mega Watt Hours in 2012/13 - resulting in a reduction of CO2 emissions of over a quarter or 1395 tonnes in the past five years and 2658 Mega Watt hours of electricity. In addition to these savings, as an efficient energy user, the Council now falls outside of the new carbon tax regime – which would have seen additional costs to the Council of up to £470,000. Cutting back on energy use and installing energy saving measures like solar panels and combined heat and power systems have all helped the Council to save money, as Councillor Robert Boswell, cabinet member for environment, explained:
“We’ve cut our energy use by over 27% in five years – saving taxpayers money and reducing carbon emissions. It is part of our plan to drive down energy use and be a greener, more environmentally friendly Council. It’s good for taxpayers and good for the environment too. “The whole Council is involved and I must pay tribute to Council staff who are at the forefront of our efforts to save money. Staff are going the extra mile to cut energy and are also working incredibly flexibly to make the best use of office space and energy consumption. “As a Council we will continue to take steps to save money and also use renewable energy where possible. This includes exploring the potential of the ‘Powering Preston’ civic wind energy scheme.”
