Preston’s BMX facility on Fishwick Recreation Ground is to be upgraded to a national standard facility as a result of securing a grant from Sport England.
“We have been the most successful BMX Club within British Cycling for the past four years now and the only thing we were falling behind on was our track not being up to national and international standards.

Grant Funding Available to local Community Groups Local voluntary community and faith groups are being encouraged to apply for grants towards appropriate services and activities. To be considered, proposals must contribute directly to one of the following funding themes: sports; arts and culture; tackling economic exclusion; and aiming towards a cleaner, greener and safer city. Councillor Matthew Brown, Cabinet Member for Community Engagement and Inclusion, said: “Community groups play a vital role in delivering services to the people in Preston who need them. “This is an excellent opportunity for local community groups and organisations to apply for funding, allowing them to realise their plans for the coming year.”
The total fund available is £185,000 and the maximum awarded to any one project will be £30,000 for main grants and £3000 for small grants.

Smarter working for energy savings boost Council bosses in Preston are embracing the latest in smart working practices in a bid to cut energy use.
On Friday 1st February and for every Friday for the next eight weeks, the council will be working differently so that only public facing offices will be open as normal. To accommodate this, council staff will either work five days in four, work remotely or work from home or even take any remaining holiday entitlement. Services to the public at the Town Hall including the Contact Centre and One Stop Shop, Guildhall, Leisure Centres and Harris Museum will be unaffected. This innovative move is part of the council’s sustained commitment to save money on energy use.
“We’ve done so well that the council now looks like it will be exempt from the new carbon tax regime. This would be a major achievement and means the council would safeguard over £470,000 in carbon tax payments. “This is a huge sum of money that would go a long way to protecting Preston’s vital front line public services like street cleaning, parks, leisure centres etc. “We simply must do all we can to save energy which is why we are taking this bold and innovative step to limit opening of council offices every Friday from 1st February 2013 to 29th March 2013 inclusive. “So, only those staff that have direct contact with the public will be in the Council’s offices on those Fridays. This will be done through our non-public facing staff condensing their hours and working five days in four, or by using smart and remote working. Some staff will also be able to use up their remaining holiday entitlement on these Fridays.

Council Budget Proposals Front line public services in Preston are to be protected as part of the recommended 2013/14 Preston Council budget. For 2013/14 savings totalling £996,000 are proposed - mainly by streamlining and restructuring back office services and deleting vacant posts. Councillor Martyn Rawlinson outlined the funding problems facing the Council and warned of more painful and difficult decisions ahead: “Protecting vitally important public services that we all rely on is key to our budget proposals. For 2013/14 we’ve done this by cutting back on items like ICT equipment and insurances as well as restructuring council departments to save money.

“This will result in losing four and a half jobs but we will look to accommodate this through deleting vacant posts and voluntary redundancy where possible. “We’ve had to put up some fees and charges to raise more income, but our prices remain competitive - either in line or cheaper than the amounts neighbouring councils charge. “A 2% council tax rise is also proposed but this works out at just £5 a year extra for the average council tax payer in Preston - that’s less than 10p per week. “Looking further ahead the financial position is less certain. Preston has taken a massive hit in Government cuts - being one of the worst hardest hit councils in the whole country. It means that between 2010 and 2015 Preston’s budget will have been cut by a third from £30m to £20m. We are going to have to make some very difficult decisions, but at least we do have some time to consider all the options and decide on the best way forward for Preston.”
