ROLEX…WHAT A DIFFERENCE A NAME MAKES ! ! Hans Wilsdorf and his brother-in-law, Alfred Davis, founded Wilsdorf and Davis, the company that would eventually become Rolex SA, in London, England in 1905 Wilsdorf and Davis’ main business at the time was importing Hermann Aegler’s Swiss movements to England and placing them in quality watch cases made by Dennison and others. These early wristwatches were sold to jewellers, who then put their own names on the dial. The earliest watches from Wilsdorf and Davis were usually hallmarked “W&D” inside the caseback. In 1908, Wilsdorf registered the trademark “Rolex” and opened an office in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. The company name “Rolex” was registered on 15 November 1915. The book The Best of Time: Rolex Wristwatches: An Unauthorized History by Jeffrey P. Hess and James Dowling says that the name was just made up. One story, never confirmed by Wilsdorf, is that the name came from the French phrase horlogerie exquise, meaning “exquisite clockwork.” In October 2012, Gerrards were pleased to feature two fine examples of Rolex wrist watches in their auction as shown below. RSPCA Preston & District Branch is the city’s only animal rescue centre. Formed 126 years ago it may now only be a matter of weeks before the unwanted cats and dogs that have been left in our care could face an uncertain future. Although we are affiliated to the National RSPCA, we are not funded by them and receive no government funding for our work. Instead we rely purely on public donations and the generosity of the community to keep the centre open. With fewer people nowadays leaving legacies to the centre, we are more desperate than ever for your help to keep Preston and District Branch running. In an average year, our costs are around a staggering £240,000 and as a stand-alone charity, the animals at the centre are completely reliant upon your support. It costs us approx £20,000 every month to run and we fall short most months by about £8,000 So please consider making a donation TODAY, so we can continue to re home and rehabilitate animals in and around Preston. BOOSTING THE HIGH STREET: HAVE YOUR SAY ON PLANS FOR THE CITY CENTRE A month long consultation has been launched by Preston City Council to consult on a new City Centre Plan. The aim of the Area Action Plan which will run until 2026, will be to boost Preston’s high street and the Council is seeking the views of residents, businesses, landowners and key stakeholders in the city centre. Councillor John Swindells, cabinet member for planning and regulation, said: “This plan will include new policies and allocations to guide the future development of the city centre in challenging economic times.

GOLD STANDARD FOR DOG WELFARE IN PRESTON Preston City Council’s dog welfare service has successfully achieved gold for the second year running in the Community Animal Welfare Footprints (CAWF) scheme for 2012 awarded by the RSPCA. The Stray Dog Footprint recognises local authorities who have clear procedures in place that ensure both the welfare of the stray dogs and a consistency of service. To achieve the gold award, the team went above and beyond providing a basic service to ensure higher animal welfare standards.

Councillor John Swindells, Cabinet member for planning and regulation, said: “This is a brilliant achievement for the council’s dog welfare service, who have worked hard year on year to consistently achieve success in this area. “Due to the economic situation stray dogs nationally are on the increase but over the last 3 years Preston has seen a decline. This is down to the team working closely with other agencies to promote responsible dog ownership in Preston and the fact that the Council still offer free microchipping events. This award rightly recognises the accomplishments of the team.”

PRESTON BUS STATION DEMOLITION APPROVED IN PRINCIPLE Preston City Council has approved, in principle, the demolition of Preston Bus Station. Commenting on this in principle decision, Council Leader Councillor Peter Rankin said:

“We do understand that many people are passionate about the Bus Station and there is no doubt that it is a striking building – so it is very much a heart and a head dilemma that we face. “But at the end of the day we have to vote with our heads. It is cheaper and better value for money to taxpayers to demolish the building and then work with Lancashire County Council to build a new modern, smaller and fit for purpose Bus Station in its place. “That is not to say that the bulldozers will arrive tomorrow, next week or indeed next month. We’ve already had some private developer interest in the building. We will talk to any serious investors with a proposition to invest in it for the future.

“Our preferred option would be to refurbish Preston Bus Station. We have spent time and effort looking at refurbishment as an option. More than 100 companies from across the UK and Europe are taking a keen interest in Preston’s pioneering wind energy project.

“Our aim is to produce more renewable energy, cut carbon emissions and improve our environment. The key ingredient for our wind energy scheme, is that the money generated will be re-invested and ploughed back into Preston. It is a real win, win situation. Greener, cleaner energy and much needed investment for Preston.

Following on from the successful planning application to erect a test wind mast on land at Wall End Road in Preston, tenders from suitable companies to provide technical and consultancy support to the Council are now being sought. So far over 105 companies have shown an interest in the Powering Preston project - that is exploring having up to three wind turbines in Preston, potentially generating 21,000 megawatt hours of green, renewable energy. As a “civic wind energy” project, in addition to producing green energy, any income from the scheme would be re-invested in Preston’s economy. Welcoming the progress on the Powering Preston project, Councillor Robert Boswell, cabinet member for environment and sustainability said: “This is a truly exciting and innovative project. We’ve been inundated with enquiries from construction and other companies from right across Europe. Many other councils have also been in touch about

“We’ve still got much work to do. Our first task is to put up the wind test mast on the site, which will be done by March 2013. We will then be able to measure wind speeds to find out if it is windy enough. Along with this work, we will be exploring other issues too like wildlife and the ecology of the site, as well as radar and air traffic control. “We are looking at late 2013 or early 2014 before we have all the necessary wind data and other work completed. If the wind speeds are good and strong enough, and the impact of the project has been properly assessed then we will press ahead and submit a full planning application. “This is an important project for Preston and we are keen to explore all the benefits it could bring to the city.”

The Lancashire & South Cumbria Cancer Network are launching a new ‘Be Clear on Cancer’ campaign in January. ‘Know for Sure’ is the new initiative which aims to raise awareness of the four most common symptoms related to cancer. When it comes to cancer the harsh reality is that 10,000 deaths could be avoided each year if cancer survival in England matched the rest of Europe. In England around 268,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed every year. It mainly affects older people, with almost 9 out of 10 cases diagnosed in people aged 50 or over.

The message is clear; if any of these symptoms become apparent to you then the advice is to make an appointment to see your doctor straight away. The chances are it’s nothing serious, but if it is cancer, then finding it early makes it more treatable. INNER EAST PRESTON IS ‘BIG LOCAL’ WINNER! Preston City Council is delighted to announce that the Inner East Preston area has been selected by the Big Lottery Fund to receive at least £1m for the community under its ‘Big Local’ programme. The money will be allocated for projects over the next 10 years, with residents taking the lead and identifying priorities that matter, enabling them to take positive action. The funding for Inner East Preston – the name given to the majority of Fishwick and St Matthew’s wards; will come from the Big Local programme, funded through a £200m Big Lottery Fund investment and managed by Local Trust. Big Local is helping 150 small urban and rural communities across England to make their areas even better places to live.

Councillor Matthew Brown, cabinet member for community engagement and inclusion, said: “This is brilliant news that the Inner East Preston area has been chosen to be part of the Big Local programme. “The scheme is funded by the Big Lottery Fund and run by Local Trust and will see the Fishwick and St Matthew’s wards receiving at least £1m Lottery funding to enable residents to take action and make their areas even better places to live now and in the future. “It’s about bringing together all the local talent, ambitions, skills and energy from individuals, groups and organisations who want to make a positive and lasting difference in their communities.
