Life for those with a hearing loss set to improve. People with a hearing loss can often misunderstand the spoken word. There are certain sounds people don’t hear very well even if they have a mild hearing loss. In particular, consonant sounds like ‘f’ ‘s’ and ‘sh’ which are quite high pitched are often not heard whatsoever in running speech because most people lose their hearing for high pitched sounds first and those sounds are particularly soft in the first instance. Many vowel sounds are easier to hear because they are powerful, relatively low pitched and of a long duration. Consonants with ‘vowel like’ sounds in them like a ‘b’ or a ‘d’ may be difficult to distinguish from each other because only the low pitched parts of the sound may be heard which means a ‘b’ and a ‘d’ sound essentially the same.

Spare a thought for someone with hearing loss next time you get frustrated and possibly shout because you have been ignored or had to repeat yourself. Shouting won’t necessarily help because as much as you shout ‘s’ or ‘f’ sounds won’t be heard more clearly. Advances in digital hearing aids mean that soft high-pitched sounds are amplified preferentially and a new technology known as ‘frequency compression’ actually makes these sounds audible for people with severe hearing losses by changing the pitch of these sounds. If you, or a relative, would like to know more about how these technologies work or perhaps arrange a free trial call Cleveleys 855205 Tues to Friday 9.30am to 5.00pm. Ask to speak to Gary Waite or Gary Bradshaw.

ÂŁ100 reward for catching a Wyre fly tipper Cash rewards are being offered to residents who help Wyre Borough Council catch fly tippers. During a six-month pilot scheme, ÂŁ100 will be given to people who provide information leading to the prosecution of anyone who illegally dumps rubbish on public land. The reward has been introduced to tackle a growing problem in Wyre's neighbourhoods, particularly those with a network of unadopted alleyways or rural areas where hedgerows provide screening. Councillor Paul Moon, Cabinet member with responsibility for waste removal, said: "Fly tippers dump their rubbish when they think they won't be spot-

ted. Combined with the need for strong evidence, this makes it very difficult to take action against them. "Enlisting the help of residents gives us more eyes and ears in our communities. Their evidence could help us secure more prosecutions, which is often enough to stop offenders doing it again.

The scheme will be evaluated at the end of six months to determine take up and impact on fly tipping statistics.

"Fly tippers might also think twice if they know more people are watching out for them." The person providing the evidence must give their name and address and be prepared to attend court where necessary. Information (with pictures where possible) can be

A NEW SLANT ON

HOME COOKING It's all about simple pleasures this week, as we talk to Rachel Allen about her book Home Cooking and take a peak at some of the delicious recipes found inside.

F

or Rachel Allen, as she demonstrates in her Good Food series and accompanying book, home cooking is about making simple, wholesome food that the entire family can enjoy together.

Try some of Rachel Allen's recipes at home...

Crispy prawns with Chinese noodle stir-fry 400g medium Chinese egg noodles 2 tsp sesame oil 3 tbsp groundnut oil 375g raw, peeled large tiger prawns or about 24 small prawns, split in half lengthways if large. 3 tbsp plain flour 2 cloves of garlic, peeled and finely chopped 2 tsp finely chopped root ginger 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped

1 carrot, peeled and cut into fine strips 110g green beans, topped and tailed and halved 2 tsp dark soy sauce 1 tsp caster sugar Bunch of spring onions, trimmed and cut into strips 110g beansprouts 2 tbsp roughly chopped peanuts, toasted Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Bring a large saucepan of water to the boil with 1 tsp of salt and cook the noodles for 3-4 minutes or following the instructions on the packet until tender. Drain well and return to the pan. Drizzle the sesame oil over and toss to coat. Cover the noodles and set aside in the pan to keep warm. Pour 2 tbsp of the groundnut oil into a wok or large frying pan on a medium-high heat. Season the prawns with salt and pepper and

Serves 4-6

toss in the flour to coat lightly, shaking off any excess. Fry the prawns for 2-3 minutes until golden and cooked through. Set aside to keep warm, but do not cover. Add the remaining groundnut oil to the wok or frying pan. When hot, add the garlic and ginger and saute; for about 30 seconds until just golden. Tip in the chilli, carrot and beans and saute for a further 3-4 minutes.

Season with the soy sauce and sugar. Add the noodles and all but a handful of each of the spring onions and beansprouts and stirfry for 1 minute more. To serve, divide the noodle stir-fry between warm plates or bowls. Arrange the prawns on top and sprinkle over the remaining spring onions and beansprouts. Scatter with the toasted peanuts and serve immediately.

TOUGH TIMES AHEAD FOR FAMILIES While the plunge in mortgage rates eased millions of households through the financial crisis after the global meltdown of autumn 2008, balancing the books for many families could get much trickier from now on.

B

roadly, expenditure is set to rise, while many people's income will struggle to keep up. In many cases, incomes will fall as the Government cuts public spending. For consumers, higher VAT means petrol rising by 2.5p per litre, cigarettes by 12p per pack and a pint of lager or glass of wine by 7p. Economic growth would fall from 1.25% to 0.75%, while the Consumer Price Index (CPI) would receive a healthy kick and 47,000 jobs could go in the retail sector as spending tails off. Bruce Fair, Kelkoo managing director, says: "A VAT increase raises Government revenues significantly, but consumers are left facing an increase in the price of everyday goods at a time when salaries generally are being frozen and the overall tax burden is increasing. "The combination of lower disposable incomes, and a reluctance to increase borrowing in the current economic climate, is likely to result in lower levels of spending." Plenty of evidence suggests discretionary spending - on things not absolutely essential - is falling: summer holidays, for instance, are widely discounted, vouchers slash the cost of eating out, clubland spending by younger people is taking a dive. Looking forward, interest rates must rise. Investec Bank reckons one in three savers dipped into cash reserves in the past six months, while the website

Moneysupermarket.com says five million people admit to regularly using a credit card to pay household bills.

2.5 million people withdraw cash on their cards, potentially costing£90 million a year in fees because cash transaction APRs usually top 20%

Kevin Mountford, head of banking at Moneysupermarket.com, says: "Used responsibly, credit cards can be an integral part of household budgeting, but it is alarming to see so many people using their cards to pay for what should be everyday spending.

"Funding a large purchase such as a TV over the length of an interest-free period makes sense. But consumers turning to credit cards to fund basic household bills on a regular basis should be hearing alarm bells, as this habit needs to be avoided wherever possible - it's really a case of robbing Peter to pay Paul." This landscape is familiar to Gary Miller-Cheevers, who started Speed-e-loans as an online agency to provide payday loans in January 2010: his 14-strong team lends a total £250,000 per week to 1,000 applicants. The first loan, limited to £250, is to be repaid when their pay cheque arrives.

August 7th saw Thornton Cleveleys FC Seniors 1st team kicking off their debut game in the West Lancs Premier League with an away tie to Tempest Utd. The final whistle saw them travelling home with a share of the spoils following a 2 – 2 draw. Both Anthony Warwick and Chris Matthews were on target for the away side. Three days later TCFC were on the road again and the long journey to Dalton Utd proved fruitful as Daz Hall found the net 3 times for his hat trick in the 1 – 3 victory . A creditable 4 points from a possible 6 proved to be a good return without a home game having yet being played.

“With home games every Saturday for either the 1st team or the Reserves throughout September and October we hope the numbers of people coming to August the 14th saw the eagerly awaited first home support us will increase week on week. We are game of the new season, and the growing army of looking forward to even greater numbers coming to home fans were not to be disappointed as John watch the 10/11 fixtures at New Bourne Park than we Mendonca s team secured a comfortable 3-1 win welcomed last season. I think football fans up and against Stoneclough . Langton and Dawson along down the country are enjoying watching their local with Warwick who doubled his tally for the season all teams with local home grown talent rather than found themselves on the score-sheet. having to pay fortunes to watch the overpaid prima donnas in the Premiership and the likes. We have With games now coming thick and fast and another had plenty of positive comments from football fans home tie Thornton Cleveleys hosted Garstang at who have come and watched us play for the first time New Bourne Park and ran out 4 – 1 winners . and have really enjoyed what they have seen and The much anticipated home game versus Poulton come back again and again. Playing in front of all the was played out in front of a packed clubhouse on new and old fans gives me and the lads a real buzz Tuesday 24th. The West Lancs Prem local derby to go out there and perform even better” says finished 2-2. The draw saw TCFC sitting nicely in 4th Mendonca. place with 3 wins one draw and one defeat. A point’s tally of 10 from 15 proved to be a very good start for KEEP UP TO DATE WITH ALL THE LIVE T.C.F.C in their inaugural premiership campaign. PREMIERSHIP AND CHAMPIONSHIP ACTION @ TC’S SPORTS BAR ~ NEW BOURNE PARK In his post match comments manager Mendonca commented “I am fairly happy with the way the lads MORE THAN JUST A FOOTBALL CLUB have set about the task of stepping up a division. You do notice the teams we are coming across Party Function - Room Hire week in week out are that bit stronger and quicker Conferencing Suite – Meeting venue and a bit more technical but I feel we are at least matching them in those departments “ Thornton Cleveleys FC has their very own function Fulwood Amateurs sitting two places below in 6th were next up, away, and another 2-2 .Another point brought back home and a creditable 5th place league position at the end of the month.
