At Bennetts of Fleetwood, the Difference is Clear. Bennetts of Fleetwood has been serving the local area for over 2 years, and are going from strength to strength, with customers new & old very happy with their product range and service. David Bennett, an experienced local time-served Ophthalmic Technician and experienced dispenser, feels that ―the personal touch they offer‖ is often missing in today‘s Optical mass market, where customers are pushed through the system and persuaded to buy extra pairs and coatings that they don‘t need. The team consists of David, Nicola, Steve and John, all highly experienced Optometrists, and Fel, their friendly & efficient Receptionist and Optical Advisor. Bennetts offer a personal service, where customers are offered not just a wide product range and competitive prices, but also receive glasses that meet their needs and budget and that fit properly and correct the customer‘s vision accurately. ―We are thrilled to find that we are being recommended time and again by customers to their family & friends, who love our wide range, competitive prices and personal service‖, said David. David and his team, look forward to seeing customers, both old & new and to meeting your Optical needs. - Bennetts of Fleetwood, the local optical retailer for local people.

Thornton Primary School

Thank you to all the parents and children who have supported the bus for the last two years in the Gamble Road area.

Heys Street, Thornton 01253 821128 It‘s going to be a busy half term here at Thornton Primary School! During November, we will receive a visit from Harold the Giraffe and the Life Education Bus. This is an exciting facility for the children to learn more about leading healthy and safe lives, and the children always enjoy meeting Harold (even Year 6 ask for him to come out!) Our walking bus changes route this month, and you will see us in our bright waistcoats walking along Lawson‘s Road, Trunnah Road and Heys Street on a Tuesday and Thursday. This popular service ensures our children arrive at school on time, after a good walk in the morning sunshine (rain, hail, snow and sleet!!). If you live along our new route and attend Thornton Primary, why not talk to Mrs Spencer about joining the bus.

10

Christmas Fair takes place on Friday November 27th at 6:30 pm. Please come along and support us. There will be a variety of stalls and games, a fabulous raffle (1st prize £100 Argos Voucher), and Father Christmas has also agreed to pay us a visit, even though it‘s his busiest time of year! Our school has changed beyond all recognition over the last 5 years, with a complete refurbishment and new junior department. The opening of the Children‘s Centre has enhanced our services even further. If you haven‘t seen us for a while, and are curious about what we do, please don‘t hesitate to phone us and make an appointment to have a look round. You‘ll be amazed!

Thornton Cleveleys Running Club began life in June this year when four running friends met for a beer or two and decided that there was a need for a running club in the Wyre area in which they all lived ,and one that put the emphasis on putting the ―fun back into the run‖ along with the fitness. We approached Steve Abbott at Thornton Cleveleys Football Club with the idea of running the club from T.C.F.C facilities .He kindly agreed to this and keeps saying he will get around to having a run with us. Gwen James was appointed chairperson, Malc Sherwood as secretary, Julie Murphy as membership secretary and Bob Fairclough as treasurer. Tragically Bob was killed in a motorbike accident in August and the role of treasurer has kindly been taken over by Christine Burgess. We were soon joined by Debbie Cardwell, Kirsty Waywell, Bev Foster and Simon Mason. Simon has set up a T.C.R.C face book account ,where we post events and members can leave messages etc. Hopefully in the future we will develop our own web site. We now have over thirty members with more joining every week. Membership is open to all abilities from age 18 onwards ( our oldest member is Mike Walsh who is on his way back from injury and has completed numerous marathons ,not bad for a youngster of 77 who started running in his sixties. The club is affiliated to A.R.C ( association of running clubs) which provides insurance cover. Annual membership is £10 which includes membership to the social club with changing and shower facilities and a bar for a beer after the run. We meet on a Tuesday and a Thursday at 6.45pm to run at 7pm. Tuesday is a club run for all abilities with distances ranging from a couple of miles to 8-10 miles depending on individual ability and fitness. Nobody is left to run alone. Thursday is either a club run or a training session with our qualified club coach Malc Sherwood. Just for fun we have arranged a run along the illuminations with a fish and chip supper to follow and be prepared for Halloween, TCRC become witches and devils for a fun run through Thornton.

14

Friday December 18th is our Christmas social at the club, details to follow. In future we plan to introduce a club championship and handicap system which helps the runners to gauge his or her fitness level. A number of our ―newer‖ members are already targeting races in the near future with the Green Drive 5 at Lytham on the horizon. Plans are under way to introduce a local race next year in memory of Bob mad would like to make it an annual event. Well done to Kirsty Waywell who recently completed her first half marathon at tar Great North Run. Also Brian Cumpsty for his excellent time ( 67.27) in the local Pier to Pier 10 mile race. Good luck to all our members doing the Green Drive 5.We look forward with confidence and optimism to the coming year, seeing the club grow but ultimately to have ― fun‖ and get fit. Thornton Ladies Club Great News!!! We are half way towards sponsoring a child through Sue Hayward's 'Children of Watamu' appeal. So far, over £100.00 has been raised at Thornton Ladies Club (TLC) fundraising events. Ladies have also contributed items of clothing etc and these will be shipped to Kenya in November - 'Thank You' to all who contributed and supported the appeal. October has been a busy month for TLC, as 15 of us super trooped our way to Blackpool Winter Gardens to watch 'Mama Mia'. An Abba fantastic time was had by all . Also, the October meeting was led by Maggie who demonstrated her skill of jewellery making along with the opportunity to purchase some of her lovely, creative items. November - the long awaited card and scrap booking event will be on Wednesday 18th. So come along prepared to be creative and capture your precious memories or simply have a go at making something special. Bring along your special keepsakes such as: photos, baby's 1st curl, flowers, cards etc. We now have over 50 ladies registered with TLC but still have a long way to go until we are bursting at the seams and welcome any lady, any age to join us. Only £2.00 entry incl refreshments, doors open 7.30 with close 9pm - come along and see what you're missing. December - save the date - Christmas social night on December 16th.- TLC

West Lancashire Freemasons

North Fylde Group Steve and Eric GO! back to school Masons Steve Marshall and Eric Bridge from Cleveleys Park Lodge No 7540 went back to school for the afternoon and found themselves taking part in a musical extravaganza with the children and teachers of Red Marsh School. The pupils were discovering about the customs and costumes of their counterparts in India, China and Iceland and had put their findings to music. Head teacher Catherine Dellow invited their guests to a preview of the children‘s concert by way of thanks for a gift the Masons had brought for the school. Steve, who is in the chair of Cleveleys Park Lodge which meets at West Drive Masonic Hall Cleveleys, was at Red Marsh School with Eric to hand over a cheque for £500 for special project. The school is participating in the Great Outdoors (GO!) Project which encourages the children to make use of a brand new play area which is being jointly developed by Red Marsh and near neighbour Great Arley School. Project manager Ian Squire explained that the mission is to create a place where disability becomes invisible and will with help from lottery funding which the school won after they reached the final of the People‘s Millions scheme.

When Cleveleys Park Lodge heard that the next phase of the plan was on the drawing board, that of creating an active sensory zone for the children, they decided to pitch in. The Masons‘ cheque will go some way towards obtaining large garden items such as wind pipes, sound rollers and dance chimes and phones in wood and stone which will help children who have difficulty in communicating in a fun way. … And

that concert? Steve and Eric wholeheartedly agreed that the sing along had made their day, ―just that bit special.‖

THORNTON CLEVELEYS FC

LINK-Magazine TABLE TOPPING TCFC The beginning of October found Thornton Cleveleys FC in a healthy position in the West Lancs League after another clean sheet on September 27th in a 0-2 away win at Mill Hill St Peters took the Reds up to third place in the table. Cup football followed soon after and a nail biting 4-3 win in the Lancashire Amateur Shield v Leigh Athletic saw them going through to the next round . The seven goal thriller saw the home side come back from a goal down and then throw away a two goal lead before finally settling the tie with a late penalty. The pick of the goals, was a 35 yard direct free kick from leading goal scorer Craig Frankland. In his post match interview manager John Mendonca commented ―At the end of the day it‘s the result that counts, so we will take this victory and a place in the next round. We will look to address some of the negatives in the game, as at times our passing and defensive play fell well below the high standards that we have set this season. The fact that we managed to come back in the game and gain a victory highlights the true strength of character and commitment that our players possess.‖ On the 10th of October Thornton took on Hawcoat Park in what was expected to be a close game, with the teams sitting in 3rd and 4th place in the league. The opening ten minutes saw Thornton looking the most dominant in a rarely used 4-4-2 formation. Thornton created numerous chances in the opening half an hour, but lost a valuable player when Hall was shown red after 25 minutes. Immediately after, good work by Beavers and Kozakiewicz piled more pressure on the Hawcoat defence, and when the ball was cleared to Craig Frankland he heeded the crowd‘s shouts to shoot, and obligingly struck a low shot past the keeper to put Thornton 1 up. Following the half time break, Thornton continued their dominance and on 60 minutes Steve Brookes made it 2-0 with a half volley after the away side struggled to clear a set piece. Frankland took his season‘s haul to 12 when he beat the offside trap to go one on one with the

24

keeper and confidently put Thornton 3 ahead. A 91st minute penalty to Hawcoat saw the game finish 3-1 to Thornton Cleveleys. October 17th saw TCFC seniors 1st teams‘ first trip of the season to Cumbria for a game against Millom who sat several places below them in the league. Ten minutes in and it became clear that this wasn‘t going to be as straightforward as the teams‘ league positions might have suggested. Following lots of Thornton possession, Millom took the lead after TCFC failed to clear the ball from the danger area. Three minutes later though Thornton drew level from a Langton header and went 1-2 up from the in –from Steve Brookes Millom came out a much better side in the second half showing more belief and determination but Thornton still looked the more dangerous side, and finally made it 3-1 on 60 minutes when Brookes slotted home under the keeper following good individual play by Craig Frankland. A generous penalty awarded to Millom 10 minutes later made it 3-2 and a nervy 20 minutes to the final whistle. Relieved manager Mendonca said later ―We showed great character coming from a goal behind. Although we made hard work of it, it‘s always a good sign when you are not at your best and still get a result. This is a credit to the lads who stuck with the job in hand, and showed determination to come through and get the points. I know we can‘t play samba football every week, but our overall passing game needs to improve and will improve! With previous league leaders Fleetwood Hesketh out of action and a slip up by second placed Slyne with Hest, this hard fought result saw Thornton go top for the first time this season. Now we just need to stay there‖ Admission to all Seniors games is free of charge and you can still keep up-to-date with scores from around the country with all televised Premiership and Championship games being screened live in TC‘s SPORTS BAR whilst watching the best of local Saturday league football.‖

Request for a Raffle Prizes I am writing to you on behalf of Thornton Cleveleys Youth Theatre. The Youth Theatre is home to approximately 30 young people and caters for anyone under 25 years interested in performing arts. Based at the Operatic Society Hall in Cleveleys, the children travel from a wide area including Fleetwood and Blackpool. The Youth Theatre is currently rehearsing for our latest production – ‗Aladdin Trouble‘ which takes place at the Little Theatre, Thornton on Friday 27th and Sat 28th Nov. This is an original pantomime, written by the director of the Youth Theatre and promises to be an evening of fun for children and adults alike. Previous productions have always proved very popular. Money raised at the event will be used running costs, costumes and props for future productions. We were hoping that local businesses might be willing to donate a suitable prize for our raffle. Any help they could give to us, including publicity, would be much appreciated and would be acknowledged in our production programme.
