Search is on for older people's champion in Fylde and Wyre Are you passionate about the quality of life of the many older people who live in Fylde and Wyre? Could you help champion their needs and ensure services are delivered with them in mind? A recent retirement means a chair being sought for the Older People's Partnership Board (OPPB), an active group that plays an influencing role in service planning. The successful candidate would bring an independent voice to the OPPB, which is made up of several organisations from local authorities, Age Concern Lancashire and the NHS to third sector agencies that work with older people. He or she would also be an ambassador for the board, actively promoting its work among the local community. The post is voluntary but out of pocket expenses would be paid. The OPPB was established in 2005 to champion the needs and aspirations of older people. Periodically members are responsible for allocating specific funding to local older people's projects and groups and the chair has a key role to play in this. Acting Chair Jan Finch, who is Deputy Chief Executive of Wyre Borough Council, said: "We are looking for someone who is passionate about improving the health and wellbeing of all older people throughout the boroughs of Fylde and Wyre.

"The board is well established and has already helped develop a number of services in areas such as healthcare, leisure and transport. However, a fresh pair of eyes is always welcome. "The fact that the chair will be independent also ensures that all the partners are held to account and are challenged on an equal basis." A recruitment pack has been put together for people interested in taking up the post. This is available to download from www.wyrebc.gov.uk/Find/OPPB, www.fylde.gov.uk or www.ageconcernlancs.org.uk. Hard copies of the pack are available from the Age Concern Lancashire office, 45-47 Lord Street in Fleetwood, or by calling 01253 774128. Closing date for applications is 25 September 2009 and interviews will be held in October.
Thornton Ladies Club The September meeting has been changed, we now have Sue Hayward coming to talk to us about her year as „Lancashire Woman of The Year‟ and her work with the Children of Watamu in Kenya. This will be our charity night and so a big raffle will be organised, (donations on the night are welcomed). The scrap booking event will still happen later this year so keep saving the „precious‟ bits and pieces that you wish to preserve. The Ladies‟ club is available to any lady who can get to the church hall at St John‟s in Thornton (by Stanah School) – any age is welcomed. Meetings to be held at every third Wednesday – 7.30 for 8pm start, 9pm finish, £2.00 entry fee and refreshments – Further details available from Lesley, Telephone: 01253 851007

LINK-Magazine Wyre Estuary Country Park flies the flag for quality again Wyre Estuary Country Park has been named as one of the best green spaces in the country for the fifth time. The popular attraction at Stanah has once again received the prestigious „Green Flag‟ quality assurance award from the Civic Trust which sets a national standard for parks and green spaces. Winning sites must be welcoming and wellmaintained locations run by dedicated and enthusiastic staff and volunteers who work closely with the local community.
A flag raising ceremony will be held at the park later this to year to commemorate this achievement. But you don‟t have to wait that long to enjoy Wyre‟s „jewel in the crown‟. Come along to the park this Sunday (23 August) between 11am to 3pm to enjoy a day of outdoor fun. There‟s free family fun on offer including music, children's activities, countryside and wildlife exhibitions, a farmers‟ market and a display from our four-legged friends from Blackpool‟s SuperNova‟s Dog Flyball Team plus much more. For more info please phone 01253 863100 or visit www.wyrebc.gov.uk/find/wyreestuarycountrypark
Set on the banks of the River Wyre, the country park offers a visitor centre, café and picnic sites linked to a network of paths and country lanes, many of which offer amazing views of the Wyre estuary. Efforts are also made to ensure access for all, including a trail for people who are visually impaired and an allterrain Tramper vehicle which can be hired free of charge by people with mobility problems. Staff and countryside volunteers who manage and maintain the park are passionate about their work, regularly leading guided walks and encouraging community involvement. Tom Pridmore, Director of Leisure Services for Wyre Borough Council said: "It's wonderful news that we have been awarded Green Flag status once again. "We are very proud of what we have achieved and were delighted to hear the judges‟ glowing comments regarding the park itself and our strong network of volunteers. “We see this as a fantastic accolade for the park‟s committed staff and volunteers who all work tremendously hard to offer visitors an enjoyable experience and consistently high

MARSH MILL
Windmill
Marsh Mill was built in the 34th year of
George III‟s reign, 1794.„Farmer George‟ he was nicknamed and England was a very rural place to live in at the time. A gentleman by the name of Ralph Slater was responsible for her construction. Initially the mill was used to grind various grades of flour under generations of millers. But at the turn of the century, with the demand for finer white flour, which new sophisticated machinery driven by steam and later electricity was producing, the Mill went over to grinding meal for farm use until 1922 when the Tomlinsons were the last millers. The Mill was used as a cafe in the 1930‟s and is now owned by Melrose Investments Ltd.
The Mill was restored externally to completion by „Hansons‟ and „Thompsons‟ and internally most of the machinery is intact. Mr Heapy had achieved much progress in this direction, almost singlehanded, and with the help of the District Council, he organised a Preservation Committee.
PICTURED HERE AUG 2009
A BRIEF TIMELINE of Marsh Mill 1794 The Mill was built by Ralph Slater, upon low common land, which was drained Marsh Mill (hence the name Marsh Mill) The land was owned by Bold Fleetwood Hesketh.
1896 The Mill had new sails fitted, whilst being updated by its owner Parkinson Tomlinson.
1922 The Mill was closed down after a spell of producing animal feed.
1928 The Mill was converted into a tea shop, which as used until 1935.
1930 Two ladies were killed when the fantail staging they were on collapsed, sending them tumbling to the ground.
1957 The Mill was bought by Thornton Cleveleys Urban District Council (later Wyre Borough Council.
1965 The exterior of the Mill was restored to its former glory.
1972 Walter Heapy formed the Windmill Preservation Society.
1983 A fierce storm left the Mill with only three sails. 1988 Plans were drawn up to fully restore the Mill to working order.
1990 The work was completed and the sails turned for the first time in sixty years .

Marsh Mill Windmill
The Meal Floor Here on the meal floor
where the final dressing of the flour takes place, is a conglomeration of machinery which at first perplexes even the most ardent engineering enthusiasts. There are more gears, pulleys and levers than in the cap which is the engine room of the mill. If you look at the ceiling you will notice the positions of the underside of the stones above. The outer right-hand and lefthand stones are furnished with original tentering gear, thr right hand having automatic tentering accomplished by the use of governers patented by Thomas Mead in 1787. Although the gap was set by hand when spun round faster, lifting the forked arm or „steelyard‟ which in turn lifts the „Bray‟, a secondary lever which lifted the „bridge tree‟ and its spindle with mace head on top and finally the runner stone itself. The inside right-hand stone has a large horizontal pulley underneath its spindle which would appear to have driven the countershaft via two smaller pulleys, situated above the bolter machine. Alternatively the countershaft could be driven off an intermediate pulley on the outside left-hand stone. This pulleys also drives another frame between the four stout support pillars. The speed of this machine is governed by two alternately arranged taper pulleys linked by a belt which can be raised or lowered by the governers near the stairs via a long steelyard the governers taking their drive off a pulley on the same vertical axle as one of the taper pulleys. From the mealspout of the outside right-hand stone and driven through bevel gears and pulley from its spindle is an „auger creeper‟, which conveys the meal horizontally across the top of the „sifter‟. There are also two elevators, one for recycling meal back to the stone floor for second stage grinding and one feeding the „sifter‟.
The „Brake Wheel‟ is so called because it is
surrounded by a brake-band for most of its circumference. This is a strap made up of pieces of Elm with iron links, it is anchored at one end and the other end is attached to the brake lever or „Fang Shaft‟ which is then arranged so that in its natural position held down by gravity the brake is „ON‟ and has to be pulled „OFF‟ through a pulley and rope system. It is held off when a pin in the brake lever emgages with a hook which swings freely on a pivot attached to one of the rafters. The brake was controlled from the third storey gallery by the miller. If the Mill ran away in a storm it could not be stopped by the brake for fear of causing fire by friction. In such an event the Miller „Quatered‟ the Mill by turning the sails edgewise to the wind and by chocking the stones with grain till they slowed down the whole Mill or by riding the storm out by giving the stones as much work as they could cope with. The „Brake Wheel‟ is 10ft. diameter and has 80 cast iron square cog on its face. The wheel itself is of the „Clasp Arm‟ design so called because two pairs of cross arms clasp the windshaft in the square thus formed by the arms on the square section of the shaft. It is constructed with oak and beech which season together splendidly and hooped with an iron band. Marsh Mill is a great place to go and see, to experience the heart of Thornton and long standing iconic landmark, if you haven't been inside the mill now is the time to go see and support the great work they have done to restore and maintain the mill. Marsh Mill is open 10.30am-430pm SAT&SUN and bank holidays Adults £1.50 Kids .75p concessions more information about the mill can be found at www.marshmill.co.uk

THORNTON CLEVELEYS FC
LINK-Magazine TCFC CONTINUE WINNING WAYS Thornton Cleveleys Seniors 1st team have continued with their winning ways, carrying on from last season‟s success with a win in their debut game in the West Lancs League Division 1. An away tie on 15th August saw TCFC facing Burnley Utd with a goal from Thornton‟s Craig Franklyn being the difference between the two sides in the 1 – 0 win. This victory follows on from an impressive preseason campaign with Thornton Cleveleys recording four wins, one draw and one narrow 2-3 defeat. The most noticeable of these wins came in a well earned 5 – 2 win over Blackpool FC Seniors watched by a near capacity crowd at New Bourne Park.
from Paul Bailey.(updated league table not available at time of going to print ) September 5th sees TCFC entertain Croshills in their first home fixture of the 09/10 season and Mendonca commented, “After last seasons fantastic run in both the league and the cup it will be great to be back on our home ground and playing in front of our loyal supporters again. I am convinced our fans were worth at least a goal last term and as our aim is to gain instant promotion to the West Lancs Premier League their support will be invaluable yet again.”
WINNING WAYS CONTINUE THORNTON CLEVELEYS FC
Manager, John Mendonca, now in his second season in charge commented “On the whole I have been encouraged by the effort and attitude of the players both in training and in the preseason friendlies. With only one defeat in six games against opposition from higher leagues, we have shown what we can achieve when we apply ourselves. We have tried to focus on both fitness and technical elements of the game as the step up to the first division will demand this, and the opening games 1-0 win against Burnley Utd proves we are moving in the right direction”.
Three away games follow but Thornton Cleveleys FC is hoping to attract even more fans to New Bourne Park to watch the football quality football that is on offer. Admission to all Seniors games is free of charge and you can still keep up-to-date with scores from around the country with all televised Premiership and Championship games being screened live also, so you can enjoy the best of both worlds. In conjunction with Link- Thornton all supporters new and old can enjoy a pint on us during any home Seniors 1st team fixture during September and October . See cover voucher on fron page. For further details on all Thornton Cleveleys FC teams fixtures/results and club events log on to www.thorntonclevelysfc.org
The win was a further confidence boost for TCFC and placed them joint top with five other First Team Home Matches sides from a strong league of 14 teams. With a view of strengthening their league position, the 10/10/09 TCFC v Hawcoat Park KICK OFF 3PM next game saw Thornton Cleveleys travelling to 24/10/09 TCFC v Wyre Villa KICK OFF 3PM Milnthorpe Corinthians who had suffered an opening day 2-0 defeat.
