From steel poles to timber poles Wood and fire are a potent mix, but for Stewart Healy, it’s all part of the day job. For Stewart has married opening a new timber business with his on call duties as a retained firefighter at Lytham’s fire station. He opened Lytham Timber, based at The Mill in Boundary Road and said ‘It feels good to bring a much needed trade back to the town. I used to work for Lytham Timber when they were originally based in Lytham on Duck Road. I then went to join the fire service in 2002 as a retained fire fighter and set up my own joinery business too.’ He went on to say ‘When Kensington Developments started work on Lytham Quays the business was bought out and we moved to Whitehills Business Park in Blackpool near B&Q, we traded for four years but the business closed last year. I saw it as a fantastic opportunity to bring it back to Lytham, I felt it was one of those things missed in the town, I see it as a service for the people of Lytham. Being a retained service member I am on call seven days a
week but this is my main job day to day.’ Stewart, who has 15 years experience as a tradesman and lives with his wife Rosamund and sons Max and Oliver, said ‘The timber business provides an extensive range of timber, sheet materials, iron mongery, hardware, paints, decorating and building materials. It also offers a free delivery service, free cutting service on all wood and sheet material and will take specialised machine work orders.’ The trade store is open from 7:30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday and 10am to 1pm Saturday. More improvements planned for reopened pool Plans are taking shape to give refurbished St Annes Pool a new external look to boost its appeal to visitors and residents. Councillor Sue Fazackerley, Fylde Council cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, said ‘The Arts Council has already given us £12,000 to fund the artists and the community involvement to come up with long-term plans to boost the appeal of the pool. It is a blank sheet of paper at this stage. Schools can get involved, swimmers can get involved: anyone will be welcome to submit their ideas. We’ll ask them to look at the pool’s external walls. Could they be used for murals? We want them to explore opportunities for visual pointers to link the pool to the main road and the avenue entrance.
The pool, which is run by Fylde Coast YMCA on behalf of Fylde Council, reopened in January after a £625,000 refurbishment to changing rooms, the spectator area and café and entrance/reception area. John Cronin, YMCA Executive Director, added ‘The re-development of the entrance, reception and spectator area has lifted the entire feel of the building. It’s already more welcoming and open with clear views of the pool which will inspire people of all ages and abilities to swim more and be more active. This new creative dimension added to the exterior and surrounding landscape will really enhance the visibility and appeal of the centre, capturing the important role it will continue to have in improving the health and wellbeing of the whole community.’

Quarter Millennial Celebrations at Lytham Hall Lytham Hall is celebrating the 250th anniversary since the completion of the Georgian mansion, regarded as one of the finest in Lancashire. Hall chiefs are gearing up to mark the milestone with a busy New Year of activities in the hall and grounds. Work is set to start on the £5.9 million restoration project of the former ancestral home of the Squires of Lytham, the Clifton family. There are plenty of crowd-pulling events in the Hall’s calendar, with many more events to be added!

Project manager Simon Thorpe said ‘We’re celebrating 250 years since the completion of the Georgian Hall and we’re starting the Heritage Lottery Fund project in earnest. Visitors will start seeing a difference in the historic parkland, we’ll be taking a closer look at the archaeology around the courtyard area and we’ll be preparing the Hall for restoration work set to take place in 2015.’

A £2.5m Heritage Fund grant was awarded in 2010 and a further £1m has been raised by local fund-raising and grants, but more more will be needed to cover the cost of internal renovations and the addition of a visitor centre. Hall Activity Plan Officer Marianne Blaauboer added ‘This is the time to participate, in whichever way you choose; by visiting the tearoom as you take the dog (or the family!) for a walk, joining in one of our events, visiting the Hall, regular volunteering or on a project-basis, sponsoring the project: there’s so many ways in which you can make a difference.’
