October Magazine Deadline 12th September 2014
Back to School for the kids, so now is the time to sort things out around the home. We have plenty of services inside to help you, as well as over 1300 local businesses online. It’s been a Great Summer! Now we are looking forward to all the great things in the Autumn, so if you have any events planned over the next few months, make sure they get listed FREE in LINK-MAG - the Fylde Coast’s most popular free monthly magazine. We’ve had a fantastic August dealing with more new businesses and enquiries, and we’re looking forward to continued growth over the coming months with even more new areas. We are also expanding our Vegan Print business as we offer very competitive ethical print, so look out for offers in next month’s magazine. We’ve supported local companies now for over 5 years by helping to generate over a million pounds of business per year now for local companies. At the same time we have been supporting the community by sponsoring youth teams and projects, as well as providing full and part time employment for over 35 local people. Well done to last month’s winner: Jean Scragg for the Where Am I? Competition. £50 is on its way. Have a great September, and see you next month!

Blackpool Paint Company is the brainchild of time-served Mike Hinds, who founded the company nearly 20 years ago. After spending two decades working for a national paint company, Mike spotted the need for the kind of service and quality of products that both commercial and domestic decorators demanded. He now offers the highest level of service to the most important person in the business – you, the customer. Apart from Mike’s friendly advice and years of experience, you’ll get service with a smile, the very best in paint and decorating products and prices that’ll put a smile on your face and more profit in the job.
16
The company’s reputation is now so high, painters and decorators throughout the whole of the North West now rely on Blackpool Paint Company day in, day out.
Why? because of their commitment to quality products, competitive pricing and first-class service, as well as a real understanding of what you need; the kind of knowledge that can only come from years in the industry. Their no-nonsense advice is detailed and practical, but comes without any obligation to buy, so you can browse the packed shelves in peace and find the products you really need.
Blackpool Paint Company’s customers enjoy a vast range of materials that isn’t just limited to leading-brand paints, but also wallpaper, tools and sundries including fillers, pastes, caulks, putties, silicon sealants and preparation productions – all at low prices. Everything you need, in fact, to make the job a good ‘un! And with over 12,000 colours to choose from in-store, you’ll always find the paint you need, whatever the project you’re planning. You can also bring a sample of your desired colour to the store, and Mike will scan it in using state-of-the-art colour recognition equipment to ensure an accurate match for virtually anything you have in mind.

Who benefits from Counselling? The common misconception is that only people who can’t cope with life or everyday problems, those who are depressed and anxious or have suffered some kind of trauma need to have counselling.
We would all benefit from understanding our feelings and thoughts whether they are causing constant difficulty in our lives or maybe just giving us a bit of a dig every now and again. Sometimes small incidents from our past can become magnified giving an exaggerated or elevated importance to them which causes problems in our daily lives, rationalising the incident as an adult can dispel the fear.
Sometimes it is simply a case of too many situations happening at once and our brain finds it hard to separate them in order to deal with them. It’s like a giant plate of spaghetti all intertwined with seemingly no ends. Counselling can help to unravel the jumble and clarify which needs addressing first and make sense of all the different issues. The answer to the question, who benefits from counselling? ……….. Everyone. If you feel I can help, call me on 07530175111 or Email gailsfirststep@gmail.com.

We all, no matter who we are, have things in our lives that from time to time jump up and give us jolt. Counselling helps us to understand how and why we react to certain situations or actions. For instance if a person shies away from confrontation and is nervous around anger, then understanding where that came from will help them to lose the fear, become more assertive and gain the confidence to deal with situations they would run away from in the past, therefore enhancing their life.

Lytham St Annes News
Tatton Glory For Lytham’s Garden Volunteers
Lytham in Bloom volunteers have brought glory back to their home town with a silver gilt win at the Tatton Flower Show. The volunteers who won Britain in Bloom’s Champion of Champion award last year entered the show for the first time ever this year – and their “Between Tides” display so impressed Royal Horticultural Society judges that they awarded silver-gilt honours. Plans are now afoot to bring the 28 square-yard display back to Lytham where it will be publicly displayed – possibly in Lowther Gardens. The winning scene features an iconic shrimper’s bike and uses yellow flowers to depict sand dunes, blue and white flowers to depict the sea and waves, and green plants to depict Russell Wignall, Lytham’s last shrimper. Jim Leak, Lytham in Bloom chairman, said ‘We’re over the moon to have done so well at the first time we have entered. This is one of the top awards it is possible for gardeners to win and shows the horticultural prowess of our volunteers and of the Fylde Council gardeners who helped us in their spare time. We really never thought we could have done so well when we first started designing the display on my kitchen table back in January. It’s been almost seven months of constant planning and hard work. We would never have done so well without the efforts of Fylde Council staff Mark Wilde and Elizabeth Walton who helped us in their own time. They
28
are real experts and we want to record our thanks to them and the equally dedicated council gardeners who also gave up their weekend to help.’ The Lytham in Bloom volunteers are now waiting to see how well they have done in this year’s North West In Bloom competition. If they do well they hope to re-enter the national Britain in Bloom awards next year. Councillor Sue Fazackerley, Fylde Council cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, said: ‘The volunteers have done a marvellous job for Lytham and Fylde. Visitors love seeing the displays devised by In Bloom groups across Fylde and Lytham’s are a big favourite. So many residents and visitors are commenting upon how beautiful the area looks – and I want to record my gratitude for the frequently self-effacing efforts of Lytham’s gardeners and the council staff who volunteered their time to make such a successful partnership. It’s many years since any Fylde group has entered such a prestigious show as Tatton and this year’s result is the best ever. I urge everyone to take a look at the display when it arrives back in Lytham. They can’t fail to be impressed.’

Get your grown-ups
Growing By Hannah Stephenson
G
TV gardening guru David Domoney is calling on all schools to ‘get their grown-ups growing’ as part of a nationwide event organised by the Royal Horticultural Society, to be held across October.
et Your Grown-ups Growing forms part of the RHS’s Campaign for School Gardening, - a national initiative that encourages schools to create gardens, teach the skills of growing and in turn enable their pupils to learn outside the classroom. Each October schools are invited to hold a Grown-ups Growing event so they can involve their local community to help develop the school garden. Grandparents, parents, carers and friends are invited to help. Activities suggested for event organisers include tool swaps, taste tests of produce grown in schools or alternatively locallygrown fruit and veg, a range of gardening classes and even a mini garden show. Schools with gardens can encourage adults within the community to help develop new areas such as a wildlife garden or help construct raised beds. A Get Your Grown-ups Growing event can also see adults passing on their gardening experience to children by helping them sow seeds, plant trees and assist in weeding.
For schools without gardens it’s the ideal opportunity to involve adults in the community from the beginning to establish some form of gardening facility in the school. For both types of schools the event can even be used to raise funds through plant sales and raffles. Entering its fifth year, Get Your Grown-ups Growing has developed from a small pilot project based in Yorkshire to a national success. Of the schools that held an event last year, 74% said it had increased their children’s interest in gardening, while more than half reported an increase in adult support and adult interest in gardening. Jacky Chave, RHS strategic schools manager, says: “Having a school garden is a fantastic asset for teachers and pupils as it provides a multitude of learning opportunities, but we know it can take a lot of hard work to maintain. “By involving parents and other local adults, through an event like Get Your Grown-ups Growing, we hope that school gardens will be looked after all year round and enthusiasm for gardening and growing will spread beyond the school gates and into children’s homes.”

The RHS hopes to see 2,000 schools register for this year’s Get Your Grown-ups Growing event. All registered schools will be entered into a free prize draw to win garden tools and materials. Schools which register will receive a free support pack including seeds, event ideas, information templates, stickers and more. Each school can choose any date in October to hold its event and organise activities to suit its requirements.
To register: Schools must sign up to the RHS Campaign for School Gardening via

After the summer break the LSA YMCA Football Club is now preparing for the new campaign which commences in early September with all 12 teams now back in pre-season training. Unfortunately, the Under 13s Girls team has had to be disbanded due to a lack of players after a number of the girls have joined Academies. However a new girls team has been formed at Under 11s following weekly trials which attracted enough girls to enter a team into the West Lancs Girls League and the Under 15s Girls have acquired some new recruits which should improve the strength of the squad. The Ormerod Disability squad continues to thrive and will be entering many tournaments during the course of the season. In the Boys section Under 7s, 8s, 9s and 10s teams will be playing non-competitive football whilst league football will be played by the Under 11s, 12, 13s, 15s and 16s. The club will also be fielding an Under 18 team in the Lancashire Sunday League which is based in Preston. At the club’s recent Annual General meeting all members of the Executive Committee offered to

GARDENING
Best of the bunch...
3 ways to...
Delphinium
Be imaginative with climbers...
They are among the most majestic of perennials in the cottage garden, throwing up towering spires in shades of blue, white, cream, lilac and pink varieties in mid-summer. Delphiniums grow best in full sun or where they will receive sun for at least half the day. They like fertile, well-drained soil and won’t survive the winter in waterlogged conditions, so make sure you dig in plenty of garden compost before planting to improve the soil’s ability to hold water without waterlogging. Most delphiniums need staking although some of the Elatum hybrids, such as ‘Mighty Atom’ and ‘Lord Butler’ have spires which will cope well in windy conditions.
Their best companions in a mixed border include dahlias, Japanese anemones and asters, although roses also make a stunning plant partner. Make sure you protect the young plants from slugs in spring. Summer favourites include ‘Faust’, with its strong spikes of deep ultramarine, ‘Loch Leven’, which produces soft mid blue flowers with a white eye, and ‘Cherub’, a dainty pink-mauve variety which grows to between 55-165cm (22-66in) high.
Good enough to eat...
Sweet Potato
Sweet potatoes have become popular in the last decade for their rich, tasty orange flesh which adds colour and texture to many dishes. They are fantastic roasted with other vegetables, or mixed in warming stews when the weather turns cooler. Many mothers boil and puree them when they are weaning their babies because of their high amount of nutrients and sweet flavour. As they are widely grown in tropical countries, they do need a sunny and sheltered spot in rich, sandy soil, dug over with compost and a general fertiliser. They are mainly grown from ‘slips’ in this country and need four
months to mature, so you need to plant tubers in May to enable them to grow to maturity. However, you’ll need to warm your soil first with cloches or black polythene, as the soil needs to be at least 12C (52F) for them to succeed. Plant them 6in (15cm) deep and 12in (30cm) apart with at least two leaf nodes under the soil. Keep them warm by growing them under cloches or through fleece and they’ll need to be well watered regularly. They can then be harvested the same way as potatoes in September.

1
Use an old garden umbrella, stripped of fabric, for a climbing frame, planting deep violet Clematis ‘Jackmanii Superba’ at its base.
2
Erect tall poles every six feet (1.8m) or so along the garden fence, attaching thick rope between them to form elegant sways. Plant rambling roses, Jasminum officinale, honeysuckle and Clematis montana at the base of poles, guiding them up and along the swags to create swathes of colour.
3
Use climbers to scramble over uninteresting shrubs in the border - clematis will happily climb conifers and other evergreens, creating colour. Use lateflowering viticellas with spring-flowering shrubs and early-flowering alpinas and macropetalas with later-flowering ones. Sweet peas can also be used for scrambling over shrubs.

Parties Work Together On Committee Switch
Fylde Council has established a new crossparty working group to develop proposals for next year’s switch from a cabinet system to a committee-based system. Members of the public voted by 57.8% to 42.2% in a referendum in May to replace the current cabinet system with a system of committees. The proposed committees will operate in the following areas: finance; tourism and leisure; operational management; health and housing. Existing committees, such as the Audit Committee, Development Management and Licensing Committee will continue. Committeebased systems were the norm in local government until the late 1990s and early 2000s. Each council, however, ran them differently – and Fylde Council’s new cross-party Governance Working Group must consider the issues before reporting its conclusions in mid-September. Councillor David Eaves, Fylde Council leader, said ‘Councillors of all parties will be represented on the new committees in proportion to how successful they are in winning seats in next

May’s council election. We also have to look at wider matters such as setting the annual budget and how this will operate in the context of a committee system. Other issues, for example, include terms of reference of the new committees and numbers of councillors serving on committees. These are procedural and constitutional matters that have to be worked through. The most important challenge for us is to get a balanced, fair and efficient system in place before its introduction in May 2015 – and one that can be supported by all the parties on the council.’ Councillor Eaves added ‘We would welcome any views from residents and organisations on issues that they feel we should take into account. We will conduct a consultation period in the autumn over a period of around three weeks. This will allow us to consider any feedback prior to making recommendations to the Council in early 2015.’ The members of the group are Councillors Tim Armit, Karen Buckley, David Chedd, John Davies, Charles Duffy, David Eaves, Sue Fazackerley, Howard Henshaw, Liz Oades and John Singleton. The consultation will be predominantly internetbased but will also include correspondence with stakeholder organisations such as parish councils.
