THE WOW FACTOR
Isabel and Mark Spencer explain how Robert Pallant Designs gave their new kitchen the wow factor. Photography: TVPAV.com
A
Poulton couple turned to Robert Pallant Designs for a second time to design and fit their new kitchen. When Isabel and Mark Spencer decided to move to a new home in 2010, their first task was to extend the kitchen area, and as smart shoppers they decided to collect quotes from a selection of different companies. “We’d used Robert Pallant before on a previous kitchen and his work was fantastic, but we thought it wise to shop around to see what else was on the market. When it came down to it, Robert’s
design and quote were far superior. Robert was the only designer who took our ideas and developed them using his expertise. The others simply recreated them,” said Isabel. Working with a monochrome colour palette in black and white high gloss with a large island unit, a white Corian worktop and a stunning floating glass-backed breakfast bar in star galaxy granite, the couple’s kitchen creates a real wow factor, making it the highlight of their beautiful home. But as enjoyable as the design process was, it wasn’t without its complications. Isabel explained: “Mark had his heart set on handleless units, but with high gloss black cupboards, I had concerns about finger marks. Robert presented us with a solution in subtle grip-ledge stainless steel handles, which look great and make maintaining the kitchen’s shine a whole lot easier. “We also had an issue with the placement of the extractor fan due to the fact that a skylight meant

The smart extractor fan is by De Dietrich, with the rest of Isabel and Mark’s new appliances being sourced by Robert from Siemens. Robert Pallant also planned the kitchen’s impressive lighting, which complements the room perfectly. On installing the new units and appliances, Isabel said: “The fitting of the kitchen was the easy bit when it came to the extension as a whole. The twins, who actually fitted our old kitchen, did a perfect job and Robert popped in on
invited them back to fit matching entertainment units in a new seating area. “I’d use Robert Pallant Designs again without doubt and I know many people who would say the same,” finished a delighted Isabel.

Keep the Grinch at bay this Christmas! CHRISTMAS TREES DECKED WITH BAUBLES AND LADEN WITH PRESENTS ARE A LOVELY SIGHT, ESPECIALLY FOR BURGLARS, SO IT IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER TO MAKE SURE YOUR HOME IS SECURE AT THIS TIME OF YEAR.
During the whirlwind of Christmas shopping trips, festive activities and frequent visitors home security can slip and, as a consequence, burglaries increase by up to 20% over the winter months. With this in mind, the security experts at Yale have come up with some seasonal advice to stop the Grinch stealing your Christmas.
WHO’S AT THE DOOR? ‘Tis the season to be jolly and with more frequent visits from family and friends, as well as the odd carol singer, Yale recommends you look through your front door ‘spy hole’ and enable the door chain before swinging it open. Only release the chain if you are satisfied that the person at the door is really who they say they are and have identification to prove the purpose of their visit – if you are unsure, keep them out. For the latest in security technology, Yale’s recording digital door viewer has a built in camera so you can take still pictures of anyone who is at the door if you are unsure of their motives..
RAISE THE ALARM As well as visiting loved ones at Christmas more of us are enjoying winter breaks, so it’s important to make sure your home is protected while you’re away. Home alarms act as the perfect ‘security guard’, watching over your property while you’re not there. Alarms act as visual deterrents to potential burglars and are vital for alerting neighbours in the event of a break-in. Yale’s Easy Fit Alarm kits are quick and easy to install, and offer discreet protection for all types of properties, from flats to large family homes. Make sure all doors and windows are fitted with secure locks in line with British standards. External timber

doors should be secured using a mortice lock and/or nightlatch approved to BS3621:2007 and if you have a PVCu or composite door then it is a good idea to upgrade the euro profile cylinder in your multi-point lock to the British Standard TS007 as well (look for the Kitemark on lock packs and on the lock itself). Locks are also available for all types of windows, including wooden, aluminium and PVCu, as well as French doors and patio doors.
To protect yourself, keep your gift receipts in a home safe that’s bolted securely to the floor or wall.

Luxury Chauffeur Driven Vehicle Hire In Lancashire
I
t’s executive travel with a difference. After all, it’s not everyday to you get picked-up and dropped off in a beautiful car,
Company boss Ross Etchells says he considers himself to be a very lucky man indeed: “I love cars, I love driving and I love people. This is my ideal job. I spend my day making clients feel special and putting a smile on their face,” he said. Lancashire Chauffeur Services has two S-Class Mercedes and two top of the range people carriers with privacy glass for that X-Factor style arrival. Ross has driven for celebrities such as Rod Stewart and comedian Jack Dee, captains of industry, legal professionals and important overseas visitors. “Whether it’s a wedding, a prom night, a corporate event, a major sporting occasion at somewhere like Wembley or Silverstone or you simply want to arrive at a top restaurant in style, we will ensure you enjoy your journey and arrive feeling pampered and relaxed,” added Ross. Other clients use Lancashire Chauffeur Services to help celebrate a special anniversary. “One of my customers met his wife at Carnforth Railway Station 45 years ago in a real ‘brief encounter’ moment. He decided to take her back there as a surprise and so I took them in one of our cars. We even took the car onto the station platform for some photographs. The lady was thrilled,” he said. “We drive clients to restaurants such as Northcote, fabulous hotels like the Midland in Manchester and venues such as the NEC in Birmingham.” Why not get a quote for airport transfers? Services for a few hours or an entire weekend. The rates are very competitive and, unlike a taxi service, you don’t face hefty extra charges if your engagement lasts longer than you’d expected.
“The meter isn’t ticking and I’m not sitting there looking at my watch. I just want my clients to relax knowing they are in good hands,” added Ross. Every professional chauffeur knows that high standards are expected of them even on the shortest of journeys. Ross and his team are always dressed in suits. As part of our service we offer airport runs to local airports including Manchester and Liverpool, if your looking for a holiday, Christmas shopping break or simply jetting away for work, let Ross and his team look after you for a safe and professional return journey.

SAVE AS YOU
By Hannah Stephenson
PRESENTS, FOOD, DECORATION, ENTERTAINING - IT ALL ADDS UP. AND WHILE MOST OF US LOVE THE FESTIVITIES OF CHRISTMAS, THE EXTRA COST CAN CAUSE HEADACHES.
moneynet.co.uk advises setting a budget and sticking to it that way you'll have everything you need without the stress of overloaded credit cards once January rolls in. It might sound like a horrible task, but making a budget plan is actually quite easy. Just decide what you're going to buy, make a list and stick to it. Don't be tempted by those goodies on offer, that sale rack you're walking past or the tasty little treats at the checkout. And don't try to keep up with the neighbours, either. You'll only end up spending too much. shopping online, can work wonders for your stress levels, as you'll avoid all the busy, bustling shops and whether or not that musthave toy will actually be in stock or not. It also helps you to avoid temptation so that sale bargain simply can't fall into your basket unless you really want it to!
Ask yourself how big the turkey really needs to be. You just need enough to feed the family and friends around your Christmas table, with a little left over for sandwiches on Boxing Day.
Don't go mad with luxury range Christmas items such as puds. People won't be that bothered if they don't see the wrapper. It's worth keeping an eye out for special offers and stocking up as and when you see the deals. Go shopping with a friend for things like big tins of chocolates. They're often on 'buy one get one free' offers so you can split the cost and share the savings. It's a good idea to buy wine in bulk as well. Lots of supermarkets offer extra discount if you buy six bottles. You can also print off discount food 18
vouchers at www.myvouchercodes. co.uk to save extra money - and don't be afraid to ask anyone joining you for lunch to be in charge of one part of the meal. They'll enjoy feeling like they've helped and you'll save some pennies in the process.
Those with toddlers should explore charity shops for quality second-hand toys in good condition. Clean them up, wrap them in Christmas paper and they'll never notice the difference. Toddlers are often far more interested in the wrapping paper anyway! For older children, splash out on a board game. It'll keep them entertained over the winter and will also occupy the whole family on Christmas Day.
And if that Christmas card list is making you feel guilty, send e-cards instead. It's more eco-friendly and you'll save money on cards and stamps. Or alternatively you could get the kids involved in making some. It's also worth taking advantage of the 'three for two' deals on offer in many shops. Marks & Spencer and Boots have an enormous range suitable for the whole family - you'll be amazed how the savings can add up. Advertise Call 0800 970 7687

CHRISTMAS Speak to friends and relatives and agree a limit as to how much you're going to spend on each other and each other's kids. If you have a big family, maybe only buy for the children - adults aren't going to mind when money's tight. You can save even more by making your own presents - and friends and family will love the personal touch. Try knitting a scarf, cook or bake something delicious and tie it up with a beautiful bow, or ask one of the children to paint a masterpiece and have it framed.
Get the kids involved with making the Christmas decorations this year. Dig out glitter and shiny paper from old craft boxes in the toy cupboard or stock up on tinsel, glue and paper chains from Poundland. Try sewing popcorn on to thread for a rustic mantelpiece decoration or scour your local park for pine cones and use them as decorations at the base of candles or in pot pourri - you can even jazz them up with gold or silver spray.
20
Let the little ones help make your own edible decorations, such as gingerbread Santas or star-shaped biscuits decorated with edible silver beads. They'll look fantastically festive and will keep children happy when they're in need of a sweet treat! You may have splashed out on festive outdoor lights - but don't leave them on all night! Just a couple of hours in the evening will do, to get everyone in the mood. Inside, replace regular lights with energy saving ones. LED lights use less energy than conventional Christmas ones.
If you want to go out, head for the nearest green space or beach to blow the cobwebs away on Christmas Day. Your library should list local walks and other events to keep the family amused. Try not to let your heating bill blow the budget: Turn your thermostat down by one degree. It may not sound like much but could cut your heating bills by up to 10 per cent. Keep the curtains closed when you go to bed to keep the heat in and use draught excluders by the front door to keep the cold air out.
Look for budget family days out with English Heritage (englishheritage.org.uk) too, where kids can listen to storytellers or take part in Christmas craft making. Alternatively, if you can't stand the thought of cooking, find a half-price restaurant meal deal from toptable.co.uk and let someone else worry about the washing up!

Cash generator: how to turn £12,000 into £370,000 The volunteers and staff of Fylde Age UK were given top marks when they told councillors of the extra £370,000 they secured for elderly residents in the last year. The organisation receives £12,000 each year from Fylde Council to provide a range of advice and help to elderly Fylde residents. Members met councillors of the Community Focus Scrutiny Committee for a “value for money” check last week – and explained how their advice and benefits checks had put an extra £370,000 in Fylde pockets. Councillors heard how the organisation had handled 879 inquiries on subjects including benefits, housing and property, health and care and conducted 150 benefits checks. The work resulted in 58 people gaining Pension Credit, 367 receiving Attendance Allowance, 13 receiving Council Tax Benefit and 65 receiving Disability Living Allowance.
Councillor Cheryl Little, Fylde Council cabinet member for Social Wellbeing, said: “They have done remarkably well for our investment of just £12,000. “The largest single group of people helped were aged between 75 and 84. These are the people who have worked and paid tax for other people all their lives and now need some help themselves. No-one who needs help should feel they don’t know where to go as Age UK has offices in St Annes and also runs ‘drop-in’ sessions in Kirkham and Freckleton. Helpers will also visit people in their own homes. In helping the elderly we also help ourselves as they will spend a disproportionate amount of their extra £370,000 in the local economy. Often it is money that would just otherwise be kept by Whitehall: it is much better that it is spent on keeping local people employed.” Councillors also heard that the helpers – based at St George’s Road, St Annes - work closely with the Citizens’ Advice Bureau, with the NHS, housing associations, social services and a local solicitor who runs a legal clinic each Tuesday.

Lytham St Annes News
New team arrives at Lytham Hall Simon Thorpe, Project Manager; Marianne Blaauboer, Activity Plan Officer and Alan Hulme, Volunteer & Training Coordinator
A new team has arrived at Lytham Hall to spearhead the multi- million restoration of the Georgian mansion. Heritage Trust for the North West has appointed three key personnel with a wealth of experience and skills to deliver a Heritage Lottery Fund project to develop the Hall and parkland over the next three years. The team is led by Project Manager Simon Thorpe – and he is supported by Volunteer and Training Coordinator Alan Hulme and Activity plan officer Marianne Blaauboer. The team took up their posts this month and are currently familiarising themselves with the 78 acres of parkland and plethora of rooms at the former ancestral home of the Squires of Lytham, the Clifton family. They are also getting to know the volunteers and organisations including the Friends of Lytham Hall, that continue to be so generous in their support. Simon Thorpe has made the move from Cornwall where he lived for 12 years working on heritage regeneration projects in public and voluntary sectors. He originally trained as an archaeologist. He worked latterly at Cornwall Council and was Chairman of Cornwall Buildings Preservation Trust where he led the restoration of the 14th century Grade I Listed Duchy Palace. Dutch born Marianne Blaauboer will be responsible for planning activities and events at the Hall in order to draw in new visitors. Marianne read history in the Netherlands and worked in 30
publishing and cultural heritage before moving to the UK in 2005. She has since worked for English Heritage and the National Trust in Yorkshire. Earlier this year she moved to Lancaster. Taking the role of Volunteer & Training Coordinator is Alan Hulme, who has worked previously at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew and at Edinburgh. His last job saw him managing Grow Blackpool for Groundwork which engaged volunteers, schools & rest homes in growing their own fruit and vegetables. Alan, who is the regular gardening expert on BBC Radio Lancashire, lives in his native town Blackpool where he thoroughly enjoys his garden as well as keeping chickens and bees. Mr Thorpe, said ‘I am delighted to have been given this chance to look after such a wonderful place, and am constantly amazed at the enthusiasm and dedication of the volunteers and supporters to keep Lytham Hall going over so many years. I hope that people will enjoy witnessing and participating in the change over the next three years as we seek to put the Hall onto a sound footing for the future.’ Building work is not expected to start until 2015 but plenty of other work will be underway during 2014 including an archaeological project in the courtyard and continued restoration of the gardens and parkland. There is already a strong programme of events lined up for 2014, and news and updates can be found on Facebook: LythamHall and WW.

from the garden
IF YOU'VE BOUGHT THE CHRISTMAS TREE AND NOW HAVE LITTLE LEFT IN YOUR BUDGET FOR WREATHS, BAUBLES AND OTHER FESTIVE GARLANDS, JUST TAKE A WALK IN THE GARDEN TO FIND SOME TWIGS, SPRIGS AND BERRIES WHICH WILL MAKE PRETTY ADORNMENTS - AND SAVE YOU POUNDS! Ideal material for adding natural beauty to festive scenes indoors include crab apples, hazel, dogwood, berried ivy, holly, silver birch stems, as well as a variety of seedheads and pine cones. Pre-lit man-made Christmas paper trees are all the rage this year, but you can create a similar pretty adornment at a fraction of the cost with half a dozen thick stems of willow or birch, tied together with florist's wire and festive ribbon or raffia and placed in a large indoor trough or pot filled with moist compost and decorative stones as a mulch on the top. Wind a selection of Christmas lights around the branches, which will give any corner a focal point and takes up less room than a regular tree in a smaller space, or will add a festive glow in another room away from your main tree. If you're using Christmas lights, don't add extra water to your pots. Clippings from your Christmas tree can make the base of a fabulous wreath, using a wire frame wrapped in moss, secured by florist's wire. Take the tree clippings and feed them into the frame from their stems, making sure all the sprigs face the same way. Again secure with thin wire, circling it all the way around the frame, and then add holly or other evergreen additions, along with pine cones which you can secure with wire or glue, baubles and
Advertise Call 0800 970 7687
colourful ribbon for a bow at the top or bottom. The colourful stems of dogwood also make an easy indoor or outdoor wreath. Weave the most colourful stems together, wiring the first one to create the frame and then weaving subsequent stems around it. Holly spheres are also easy to make, using a dry oasis ball, strong curling ribbon or raffia and florist's wire. When you are picking your holly, use end pieces, allowing for two to three pairs of leaves and then trim the bottom pair of leaves off so you have an inch of clear stem. Pierce the ribbon with a piece of wire so you can thread the wire and ribbon right through the centre of the oasis ball, knotting the ribbon or making it into a loop at the bottom and securing it further by threading more wire through the loop and into the oasis, to secure the decoration when it is suspended. At the top of the ball, wind the ribbon up to stop it becoming too creased and secure with a paperclip, which you can hold with one hand while inserting foliage with the other. Starting at the top of the sphere, put in pieces of holly around 2.53in long, adding small bits of conifer as you go, working around the ball until it is all covered.
By eye, make sure the foliage is even and fill in any gaps with other evergreens. Thuja 'Rheingold' is a great ornamental golden conifer to stick between the holly sprigs. You can also use ivy with clusters of berries, leaving the last two leaves of the ivy and the berries, which will fill it out and give the sphere a different dimension. Other bits and pieces can also be added including seedheads and cones, which may be better glued on. Tie a bow at the top of the sphere with the remaining ribbon and then suspend it from your hanging basket bracket. Festive natural baubles can be hung off shelves and door handles by making a ball out of chicken wire and then covering it with moss from the garden, secured with florist's wire, and then adding either sprigs of berries or decorative seedheads. If you want a bit of sparkle, add a spray of glitter to the berries or a little fake snow on to the moss. And at the Christmas table, create your own festive place settings with dried fruits or small bundles of cinnamon sticks, gluing small cones to the base so they can stand upright, to take florist card holders. The same natural materials can then be added to your Christmas crackers to match.

GARDENING GARDENING
Ivy
It may be the bane of many gardeners' lives, but ivy comes into its own at Christmas, adding colour and movement to outside pots and weaving in and out of garlands or wreaths as an addition to festive indoor decorations. If you have mature ivy in your garden, you may enjoy rounded heads of matt black berries in winter, prized by flower arrangers, which can be used along with red berries from other shrubs as a great contrast in indoor decorations. Some ivies are extremely hardy, surviving the worst of the winter weather unscathed, including Hedera helix, which will thrive in all soils and situations, producing glossy green leaves, and H. colchica 'Sulphur Heart', which has dark green leaves splashed with yellow and pale green. If you want a hardy variegated ivy, go for H. colchica 'Dentata Variegata', which has light green leaves mottled with grey and edged creamy white. Ivy will grow in almost any soil but does best in alkaline conditions, with moisture at the roots, and is not bothered if it's in sun or shade, although it will always grow from a shady position towards the light.
Parsnips
No Christmas dinner would be complete without parsnips, whether roasted in a Parmesan crust or given a devilishly delicious dowsing of maple syrup to create a stick-to-your-teeth, toffee-flavoured coating. And they are so easy to grow. They thrive in a deeply dug, fertile soil and should ideally follow a previous crop that has been well manured rather than adding compost to the soil when you plant them. If you are choosing a long-rooted variety, make sure your soil is devoid of stones and is not heavily compacted. Otherwise, go for a short-rooted type. Sow the seeds in April directly into the ground in drills 1cm deep and 30cm apart, sowing two seeds at 15cm intervals so you won't need to do much thinning later on. You will need to be patient because seeds are notoriously slow to germinate. Hoe between the rows to stop weeds competing and make sure the ground doesn't dry out in very hot weather. Be warned, though, that heavy watering or persistent rainfall after a drought can lead to the roots splitting. If you want a continuous crop of baby parsnips, you can sow seeds throughout May and June, to harvest in September, but make sure you use proper baby-parsnip seed as normal parsnip seedlings stay very thin until quite late in their life so cannot be eaten early. Leave winter parsnips in the ground until you need them and frost is said to enhance the flavour. However, you can lift them before the ground is hard to work, storing the roots indoors in boxes of sand. Good varieties include 'Gladiator' and 'Albion'.

Ramp up the RED The British Heart Foundation is the nation’s heart charity, dedicated to saving lives. As a charity, we rely on collections, donations and fundraising events to continue with our vital work. February is Heart Month and we are asking everyone to take a stand against the UK’s biggest killer by supporting our Ramp Up The Red campaign. On Friday 7 February 2014 we are asking people across the UK to hold a fundraising event, and simply encourage colleagues, pupils or friends to do something red to raise money for our work. This could be a “Red Party”, Wear Red, Red fancy dress, anything red. We’d love you to be involved visit www.bhf.org.uk/red to order a free pack today! it’s full of fundraising ideas and everything you need to set up your very own “Ramp up the Red” event. If you can’t do it on the 7th Feb then it’s fine to do it on the nearest convenient day.
Sadly coronary heart disease is the UK’s single biggest killer, with 2.3 million people living with heart disease today. It’s only with generous donations of time and money that we can save more lives. Together we can take on the enormous challenge of beating heart disease for good.
For more information or help with your event please contact Barbara Dunn local Fundraising Volunteer Manager 01772 641870 Email. dunnb@bhf.org.uk Last year the BHF invested more than £88m in heart research, the equivalent to £157 a minute.

£43,500 Approved for Town Centre Projects Lytham Town Centre, Photo: Craig Sparks
Town centres in Fylde are to benefit from six new projects after spending totalling £43,500 was approved this week.
• St Annes In Bloom, £2,000. Brackets on buildings for attachments such as floral displays, flags, lanterns, etc in the streets off the main Square. Contact: Fiona Boismaison, 724310.
The High Street Innovation Fund cash was given to Fylde by Whitehall late last year and councillors established the Fylde Town Centres Forum to decide how the money should be spent.
• St Annes-on-Sea Town Council, £3,000. Attractive, well-designed information banners in the Square. Similar to the large banners that were attached to lamp-posts in the town at the time of last year’s Open Golf. To be an annual display and to promote events across the borough. Contact: Dave Joy, 788560.
The forum features six members, representing businesses and town councils across Fylde. Its objective is to invite ideas for increasing customer numbers into the borough’s town centres – and then to fund the most appealing projects. Forum members met on Wednesday and approved the following: • Friends of St Annes Art Trail, £1,500. Artwork, wallpaintings and floral displays in conjunction with the town’s In Bloom group. Much work will be in the town centre’s back streets. Contact: Guy Pople, 07944 657888. • Lytham Arts Festival, up to £24,000 (final costings to be agreed). Two years’ work with artists, culminating in two arts festivals to raise the profile of the town and increase visitor numbers. To involve shop displays, performing and visual arts. Contact: Richard Marshall, 728359. • Lytham Flag Festival, £5,000. Organised by Lytham Life Magazine, the project aims to place flags above every shop and, for two weeks, to persuade shopkeepers to promote “made in Britain” goods. Special flag displays for Remembrance Weekend and St George’s Day. Contact: Susan Craddock, 733020. • Totally Local Lytham, £8,000. Initiative to promote local shopping, including a target of persuading each resident to spend an extra £5 per week in local shops, adding a claimed £8.8m to the Lytham economy. Project involves branding and marketing the town. Contact: Natalie Peters, 07776 227746.

Councillor David Eaves, Fylde Council leader, said: ‘All citizens want to see more local money being spent locally and more visitors being attracted here – and these schemes aim to do exactly that. Forum members were hugely impressed at the calibre of the bids and Fylde should be proud that we have entrepreneurs with such foresight. These projects are not just oneoffs – they are part of a strategy we have followed in recent years to regenerate and enhance all Fylde’s town centres. Millions of pounds has been generated primarily from outside bodies and private businesses to give the towns the appeal they already for residents and visitors. We hope that similar interesting bids will emerge from Kirkham in the next round – we don’t want any area to be left out Fylde is fortunate in that most shops remain busy. We want to keep it that way and all these projects will, I believe, increase footfall in our town centres. Shopkeepers work incredibly hard - we all benefit from their efforts and they deserve our support.’ Forum members still have £56,500 of the original £100,000 and will be inviting further bids to revitalise town-centre businesses. Deadline for the next round of bids is Wednesday 27 November. More details at: www.fylde.gov.uk/ hsif/

IS YOUR CONSERVATORY TOO COLD? Dont replace your conservatory roof, just insulate it !
C
osy Conservatory is a Lytham based conservatory insulation specialist that transforms the inside of your conservatory roof, to give it a fully insulated, strong, and smooth plastered ceiling, whilst keeping the original shape of your roof. It does all this without even having to change anything on the outside of your conservatory, so no planning permission is required. After cross-ventilating the ceiling, Cosy Conservatory installs a high performance composite insulation to the inside ceiling of the conservatory, there are multiple layers of reflective and insulating materials to reduce heat-loss by a stunning 90%. No other conservatory insulation solution can deliver anywhere near this figure. Your conservatory will stay warm in the Winter, and prevent the ‘greenhouse effect’ during Summer. You’ll therefore need to use far less energy to keep your conservatory warm, drastically reducing energy costs. After the support framework, cross ventilation, insulation and panelling is installed, the conservatory ceiling will then be plastered to perfection, allowing it to be painted in the colour of your choice. The entire process takes just 1 to 3 days to complete, depending on the size of the conservatory. Your conservatory ceiling will no longer look like a conservatory ceiling, but instead will match perfectly with all the other rooms of your house. And because the entire conservatory will be strengthened and insulated rain noise is reduced by 95%, so you can enjoy that dinner party without worrying whether it’s going to rain.
MAIN: After, ABOVE: Before
KEEP THE HEAT IN AND THE COLD OUT
Amazingly it has all these benefits, whilst at the same time costing less, on average, than ceiling blinds, and a quarter of the cost of plastic tile effect roof, making it the most cost effective solution available.

Councillor welcomes crime-prevention drive A leading councillor is welcoming plans to involve the community in beating crime. Councillor Cheryl Little, Fylde Council cabinet member for Social Wellbeing, is backing police plans to revitalise the network of volunteer Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators in the run-up to Christmas. The plans, launched at Lowther Pavilion last week, involve giving police contact details to all Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators and sending Christmas cards containing crime-prevention advice to all Neighbourhood Watch members. Each volunteer co-ordinator was invited to last week’s meeting where presentations were made by organisations including the police, trading standards and firefighters. Councillor Little said: ‘We want the Neighbourhood Watches to be a network of active neighbours that can help in preventing crime. If there are burglaries in an area we want everyone to let each other know so they can take extra precautions. Similarly, if there are dodgy doorstep dealers, residents should let each other know. The police can’t do it all themselves – but they can support active citizens and good neighbours.
44
Many thefts and burglaries in Fylde happen as a direct result of people not locking vehicles, sheds, garages and homes, so crime prevention advice can pay dividends. There is a lot that neighbours can do to look out for each other if they know what to watch out for.’ Councillor Little, whose portfolio of responsibilities includes community safety, added that residents should take extra precautions once clocks go back (Sunday 27 October). She said: ‘Evenings will get darker very quickly and people should consider installing timers linked to lights and radios to give the impression they are home. They should also position curtains and blinds to reduce the possibility of opportunists peering into their homes. Christmas is approaching and we don’t want the run-up to be ruined by burglars.’

£6,000 swimming cash continues mayoral tradition Disabled youngsters now have almost £6,000 for swimming after Fylde Sharks organisers met last year’s mayor. The Fylde Sharks mums and dads won support from Councillor Heather Speak, Fylde mayor until May, when they explained how they provide swimming sessions for 48 children in St Annes and Kirkham. Councillor Speak “adopted” the Sharks as beneficiaries of her mayoral fund and invited them to the town hall on Thursday (31 October) where she presented them with a £5,000 cheque to add to the £991 she handed over earlier in the year.
Councillor Heather Speak hands the £5,000 cheque to young Fylde Shark Max Cooper
Councillor Speak said: “The Sharks only started three years ago when parents realised that disabled children had very limited swimming facilities in the area. ‘Much of the tuition is one-to-one which means the parents have to invest a huge amount of time. I know they have a waiting list of children wanting to swim, but the group is short of teachers – some of whom are volunteers and some of whom are paid. I hope this mayoral fund money will help supply the teachers so that more children can benefit from keeping fit and making new friends at the pool.’
Camp, £1,000; and a large amount, yet to be finalised, to buy a number of defibrillators across Fylde. The tradition is being continued by Councillor Linda Nulty, Fylde’s current mayor, who plans a fund-raising coffee morning at 10am at the mayoress’s home – Highfield, Weeton Road, Wesham - and also a Christmas carol concert for some time in December. Councillor Nulty’s adopted charities are: Trinity Hospice; Heartbeat –a charity that rehabilitates heartattack victims; and Fylde HomeStart.
Raising money for charity is a mayoral tradition in Fylde and Councillor Speak raised a total of £18,834 in her year as the borough’s “first citizen”. Other causes to benefit from Councillor Speak’s splendid fund-raising year were: Pinpoint Prostate Cancer, £3,175; the playground equipment appeal launched by the families at Weeton
Could you help the Fylde Sharks children learn to swim? Contact Helen Jenkins for details on 07835 259888.

Lytham St Annes Under 14s remain unbeaten in the league and have progressed into the quarter finals of the Lancs FA Cup. The Under 15 and 16s were both hoping to reach the County Cup quarter finals also but both suffered 4th round defeats. The 15s lost 3-2 at home to Preston side Longsands Lynx after we had led 2-0 at one stage but it was a great game and probably, the best team won on the day.
The weather this autumn has been very favourable which has helped enormously in keeping the club’s pitches at Seafield Rd in excellent condition due mainly to the efforts of voluntary groundsman Lyndon Moore. However, Lyndon is convalescing from recent surgery and will be out of action until the New Year. Our best wishes are conveyed to him for a speedy recovery and we hope that the weather continues to be kind to us in Lyndon’s absence
The Under 16s were away at Langho JFC and it didn’t help our cause to have four boys missing due to injuries and holidays and we were beaten 6-3. Under 15s though are still unbeaten in the league and the Under 16s have only lost just once so far and are current league leaders. The Under 13s have struggled so far due to a shortage of players and in all games played they’ve just had eleven players with no substitutes to call on. The Under 11s are experiencing their first taste of 9-a-side football and seem to be adapting well having only lost twice so far. The Under 12s, after nearly disbanding last season, have recovered well by recruiting new players and are now comfortably placed in mid-table with some excellent performances.
