Practical Philosophy Northwest
Free* Course Starts Thurs 22nd September 2016 7:15pm to 9:30pm Lytham Methodist Church Hall Park Street Lytham FY8 5LU
Philosophy aims to set you free. Free from pressures and worries, free to grow, free to be more yourself. So it seems fitting that a philosophy course should itself be free. This 10-week introductory course in practical philosophy looks at life and its meaning, the world and its causes. It also considers what holds the individual back. What sets us free? Based on the classic philosophies of east and west, it invites students to see life as a place to test the words of the wise.
As places are limited you will need to enrol on-line at www.practicalphilosophy.co.uk. To enquire further please phone 0800 803 0799 or e-mail practicalphilosophy101@gmail.com *The course is completely free, however there will be a single payment of £5 to cover administration costs. Practical Philosophy North West, a branch of the School of Economic Science Charity Number 313115

Are you sure of your insurance? Is your insurance policy everything it should be? You might think you’re getting a good deal, but how can you be sure? You have a couple of options… Firstly, you could spend hours trawling the internet, dodging all the flashy gimmicks and picking your way through the small print. You’ll emerge, possibly after suffering a headaches or two, with a policy that you think is right (although you might not be sure). You may or may not know whom you are dealing with but would you know how to contact the same person again? Alternatively, you could take an altogether simpler route by speaking to BP Insurance Brokers. A presence on the local high streets for over 50 years, BP Insurance Brokers is a company that combines a modern and refreshingly personal approach to helping customers, with the time-honored principles of service, professionalism and offering great products. Whether face to face in one of the BP Insurance Brokers branches, or over the telephone, the BP Insurance Brokers team takes the sting out of organizing insurance.
12
BP Insurance Brokers independent status allows us to access literally hundreds of insurance products giving us a great chance to find the right policy for you. Many banks and other insurance intermediaries are tied to one insurance provider giving you little choice in the products available. And crucially, if you’re ever unsure of what your policy covers, or need help of any kind you can make a quick call and speak to someone at BP Insurance Brokers who knows their stuff. How many online companies let you do that? St Annes office branch manager Matthew Allen explains:”We’re always looking for useful services we can offer our customers, such as specialist motor policies and competitive commercial insurance cover. As an independent broker, we’re not tied to any particular insurance provider, which means we can search the insurance market to find a policy that provides the right kind of cover but won’t break the bank. In particular, we currently have some very competitive motor premiums for the experienced, mature driver.”
The figures speak for themselves. Call 01253 781007 or pop in to your Up-to 90% of our policies, are local BP Insurance Brokers office renewed each year; meanwhile, for details. up-to half of all quotes, bring new ADVERTISE - Book Online www.link-mag.co.uk 0800 970 7687 or sales@link-mag.co.uk business to BP Insurance Brokers.

Julie Nash Fine Art & Tuition
Anyone can have a go at painting and everyone can get enjoyment from it. It’s the perfect way to relax, make new friends and forget your troubles.
Award Winning Artist & Tutor
Getting started can be daunting and people often worry they won’t be good enough to join a class. I’ll let you into a secret - Everyone feels like that at first. Because of this, all my tuition is very informal but you’ll still learn loads of stuff. Weekend workshops are ideal taster days (all materials and lunch included). Short courses allow skills to develop week on week, and individual tuition is designed around your personal needs and interests. I also run weekly art classes at two lovely venues in Bispham and Lytham. Visit my website for more information about my tuition and view examples of mine and my student’s artwork, or phone me up for a chat. Happy painting: Julie Nash

Home & Garden
Home Owner’s Dilemmas We bought the house and moved in...
Then the builders moved in and took over the house, the parking spaces, the lawn, all of our free time, and come to think of it, most of our lives too. First there was the fun of trampling over the old carpets as I squashed massive spiders, disturbed from their hibernation. Never mind spilling the odd coffee, and no need to take off the shoes either. Ripping up carpets felt therapeutic as I dreamt of a plush new replacement to match the lovely butter coloured walls I would soon have. For an entire week my partner came home after a day’s work to spend the evening steaming walls and scraping off the dusty wallpapers, until the machine gave up and we had to make do with a wet mop and a bucket. All in preparation for the main event, dampproofing the walls and treating the floorboards for woodworm. And the wall we were taking down to make the living room bigger. If you have ever removed layers upon layers of wallpaper, especially from plasterboard, then like me, you will never want to have wallpaper in the house, ever. With aching sympathy I watched my partner toss the scraper and walk away from the hated task only to realise there was no armchair to sit on because all the furniture was packed away. With no distraction of TV to watch and no internet because a certain large telecom company could not possibly reconnect a telephone line, let alone broadband in anything shorter than a few months, my partner sat down on an upturned bucket in the middle of an empty room. He looked around the almighty mess and wondered how on earth this building site would ever be a home. The builders worked in synchrony like ants. Work was going on all over the house except the kitchen which served as storage for everything we owned, rendering it completely useless for the one purpose kitchens are usually used for – making meals.
After a week, eating a take-away sitting on a box in the crammed conservatory was no longer an adventure, no matter how we looked at it. The idea once proposed to us that we should buy a cheap caravan to park on the lawn while the builders inhabit every crevice of the house, suddenly seemed like the choice we should have made. I tried to work through the noise of drilling into bricks, ignoring the clouds of dust it created and the blaring radio turned up loud to shout over the mayhem. But instead I ended up learning about the correct ratio for the brick pointing concrete, the benefits of plastic versus metal drainage pipes and why we needed a gravelled trench built around our conservatory. Within two weeks I moved my business HQ into the empty greenhouse and charmingly, the builders would knock on the glass when they came to inform me that they ran out of tea, coffee or paint. I obediently went to get supplies in the vain hope of speeding up their work and soon ended up on first name terms with the man in charge at every builder’s yard in town. As my vocabulary expanded with words like architrave and bull nose skirting boards, I could hold my own in conversations with every tradesman who crossed my path. This, it turned out, was the easy part. I had no idea how hard it would be to choose the style of door handles… How would I know what I wanted when I lived on a building site? That’s why it was a good idea to choose a company with experience in renovating older properties – they knew what I liked better than I did! When the builders finally moved out three weeks later, it felt more like six months, but the pain was over. Stepping over buckets of paint and onto spiders the size of tarantulas quickly became a distant memory. My partner promptly installed his favourite armchair in the middle of our somewhat empty living room, but the walls were butter coloured, the blank canvas I had wanted.

Modern Family
‘Dads’ at the school gates By Danielle Lade
September is upon us again and that means the kids are going back to school. ‘Mums all over the UK sigh with relief as they get a bit of free time back in September’ one newspaper quoted. And while stay at home Mothers still outnumber stay at home Dads by 11 to 1, the number of paternal primary care givers has doubled since 1993, with 2014 National statistic figures quoting 229,000 Dads now taking the lead at home, I spoke to one of them about life as a full time Dad. John is 32 and quit his IT job when his wife gave birth to their first son Jake three years ago. John’s wife Helen had a slightly higher paid job in Design and as a couple they decided that she would return to work and John would take on the ‘traditional’ Mothers role. “The hardest thing is that it’s almost seen like I’m taking Jane’s role, when I walk into the baby and toddler groups, a whole group of women look at me suspiciously. I now know some of them much better but it definitely took them all a long time to not think of me as a strange imposter.” In fact it took nearly a year before John came across another full time Dad living nearby in their home city of Birmingham, together they set up an online Facebook group for other Dad’s and over the last couple of years, their community has grown, 54
“There are a lot of men who have a shared role with their partners, and they have all said that they found it difficult to find Father friendly alternatives to the hundreds of groups set up for women.” A quick Google search will come up with numerous options for a stay at home mum to find fellow comrades/work out partners/coffee break buddies, you name it, there’s a Mum’s group for it. Do a similar Google search for men and the results are much more limited, “The trend is definitely changing,” John says, “and the rewards of spending that quality time with Jake makes up for any nerves at going to a baby group or being the only man at a toddler swimming class.” However, with society evolving to be more accepting, the traditional view of families is being changed to be more encompassing, one of John’s Dad friends was part of a gay couple, and when he made the decision to stay at home, he was often given similar responses, ‘so you’re the ‘Mum’ of the couple.’ An attitude which is slowly but surely changing. “You of course get the odd bit of mockery, but I think anyone who stays at home to look after children full time will know that parenting is very far from weak, and anything but the easy option. I wouldn’t go back and change my decision.” Next year, Jake will be starting school and with a bit of luck a couple of Jakes friends from John’s
ADVERTISE - Book Online www.link-mag.co.uk 0800 970 7687 or sales@link-mag.co.uk
social circle will be in the same class. He is still going to be outnumbered at the school gates but he definitely won’t be alone, “there are more and more of us stay at home Dads, we may talk more about video games and less about shoes but even those clichés are changing, I speak to one of our female friends about the new Halo game coming out on the Xbox whereas the guys sometimes discuss how difficult it is to find a suitable changing bag!”
“The biggest difference between being a stay at home Mum and a stay at home Dad is other people’s opinions of it”
In any family, the most important decision is what’s best for the children and what’s best for the parents. With the cost of living making it harder and harder to live off one wage, some of the more ‘traditional’ ways of bringing up a family is just not possible. And even when money isn’t a sticking point; why shouldn’t a Dad be able to make the decision to bring up their child instead of relying on child care options or assuming it has to be the Mother? It was lovely to talk to John and my daughter Scarlett and Jake happily entertained each other whilst we had a coffee, it was immediately clear that we were both parents who wanted the best
for their child and were enjoying a bit of grown up conversation over a cup of tea. But I’ll let John sum up how he feels about being a stay at home Dad. “The biggest difference between being a stay at home Mum and a stay at home Dad is other people’s opinions of it, and as I know we made the best decision for our family, we don’t have the time to worry what other people are saying. Bringing up children is one of the most rewarding jobs you can have and I wouldn’t change it for the world.” Times are changing and parenting is now a much more modern field of life choice, so if you’re at the school gates and spot a Dad, don’t look at him like he’s a suspicious character or worse, as a ‘Mr Mum’ as the media have used in the past as a moniker. There’s a much better way of depicting a man who looks after his children full time, ‘Dad’.

Which Therapy? If you have ever suffered with back pain or neck stiffness, had an accident that left you in discomfort weeks later, or have perhaps overdone things in the gym, you may have experienced musculoskeletal pain. While many minor ailments resolve themselves given sufficient time and RICE treatment (rest, ice, compression and elevation), others require specialist diagnosis and treatment by a qualified professional. Time is of the essence when treating musculoskeletal problems, but so is choosing the right therapist. We bring you this guide to help you choose from the multitude of therapies available. Musculoskeletal pain affects the muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones. The muscles may feel overworked or pulled and burning or twitching may also be present. Pins and needles can accompany some aches, while general fatigue may be occur, together with disrupted sleep. The lack of sleep due to pain can compound the problem, while referred pain can further complicate diagnosis. Musculoskeletal pain can be caused by acute trauma – from car accidents and falls, sudden jarring of a joint when engaged in sports, dance or martial arts, to fractures, sprains, dislocations, and direct blows to the muscle, for example in contact sports.
Your doctor will conduct a physical examination and may refer you to a specialist or for a scan. Antiinflammatories may be prescribed, and in more severe cases, steroid injections. However, often by the time the patient is finally seen by a specialist or due for a scan, the pain may have subsided or perhaps worsened, causing significant distress. A number of treatments can aid recovery – physiotherapy, acupuncture and chiropractic treatment are among those used, but so are massage, stretching and Pilates.
Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy, or physical therapy, is a science-based profession focused on facilitating recovery and enabling people to remain active and independent for as long as possible. Using movement, exercise, manual therapy, education and advice, physiotherapists help patients to recover from injuries and to manage long-term conditions such as arthritis. Physiotherapists also work with athletes preparing for sporting events and helping with their recovery afterwards.
Occupational therapy
Occupational therapists work with patients of any age and assist them in coping with the effects of physical or psychological illness, disability, However, repetitive movements, overuse, accident or ageing. Care can include physical bad posture, poor biomechanics and rehabilitation, paediatrics, prolonged immobilization can also cause environmental musculoskeletal adaptation, problems care where certain management, muscles but also mental shorten and others health services become too weak and research. – this imbalance Occupational can lead to joint therapy can be offered misalignment and in a variety of settings pain. Incorrect training such as GP practices, technique and returning hospitals and nursing to activity too soon after an homes, schools, commercial injury can also be among the premises and clients’ own causes. homes. Health & Fitness
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is classed as a form of complementary or alternative medicine. It is based on the stimulation of specific points along the skin of the body, usually involving the application of heat, pressure or thin needles. While acupuncture is a key component of traditional Chinese medicine and uses concepts of Chi (energy) and its flow through channels referred to as meridians, many contemporary practitioners successfully use acupuncture without these traditional Chinese concepts.
Acupressure
Massage
Based on the principles of acupuncture, acupressure replaces the use of needles with physical pressure of the hand, elbow, or fingertips, and can also involve traditional small devices to apply pressure on different points on the surface of the body.
Chiropractic
Chiropractic is regulated by the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) and is now classified as a primary health care profession recognised by NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence). The therapy specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and management of conditions involving the joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves, especially those related to the spine.
McTimoney Chiropractic
“The McTimoney method relies on very fast, light movements to adjust the skeletal system to improve joint movement, thus helping to relieve pain,” says Mc Timoney Chiropractor Dr. Bruce Fraser, a member of the Royal College of Chiropractors.
Osteopathy
The General Osteopathic Council (GOsC), which regulates UK osteopaths, defines osteopathy as “a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions”. It works with the structure and function of the body, and is based on the principle that the wellbeing of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues functioning smoothly together. Osteopaths might also treat patients with digestive or respiratory problems, and a number of others that might not seem related to the spine or joints.
Movement Therapy
Also referred to as Dance Movement Psychotherapy (DMP), this creative therapy uses movement and dance to help clients express themselves and create a sense of harmony and well-being. It is suitable for those with and without physical and learning disabilities, children and adults with mental health difficulties and those with dementia. DMP enables all participants to work at a level they feel comfortable.

Gentle types of massage can be very beneficial to those wishing to relax their bodies and minds or recuperate after stressful events, but also for the elderly or those who simply prefer a gentle touch. Often offered in beauty salons, spas and hotels, massage can be referred to as therapeutic, Swedish or holistic massage, and aromatherapy. At the opposite end of the massage spectrum are deep tissue and sports massage – both involve firm touch and work deeper into the soft tissues – muscles, tendons and ligaments. Sports therapy will also offer remedial exercises and advice on training, in addition to massage. All types of massage help improve the circulation of blood and lymph around the body, and reduce tension by stimulating the parasympathetic system. However, the firmer types of treatment, especially trigger points massage, can also break down scar tissue built up in the aftermath of an injury, thus leading to faster recovery.
Pilates, Yoga and Stretching
These forms of exercise are often recommended by therapists and doctors to complement the process of recovery from an injury, or to manage chronic problems such as lower back pain, frozen shoulder, neck stiffness or arthritis. Pilates and Yoga are excellent ways to ease into an exercise regime whether you are a novice exerciser or an elite athlete returning to training following an injury. Both can deliver prompt results in strengthening weak muscle groups and stretching the tight areas, and if you have never done it before, speak to the instructor before booking.
A word on stretching: Different sports require different levels of flexibility and methods of stretching. Whatever you do, never stretch muscles that have not been sufficiently warmed up. Sources: The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy www.csp.org.uk NHS careers www.nhscareers.nhs.uk
