Six of the best for local loft ladder company

A

ccess4lofts is all about lofts. That’s what they do and with customer service at the heart of the company, they have proven to be one of the great success stories of the region. Quality of service means that, for example, they never subcontract. It also means that the company is fully insured and offers a minimum five year guarantee on all work undertaken. All very important measures to ensure that you, the customer, get the very best installation, service and after care at all times. If you are thinking of opening an otherwise unused space in your home, Access4lofts will have a solution available for you and your budget. Access4lofts was started in 2012 and right from the start the company was fully committed to their customer service. This undertaking has meant that Access4Lofts has received over 1,500 five star customer reviews from past customers. The company is a member of the Lancashire Trading Standards Safe Trader Scheme and has been the recipient of their customer service award for six years running. “We are absolutely over the moon to receive the award for the 6th year in recognition of outstanding customer 2

service. We pride ourselves on providing an excellent service and to receive the award in consecutive years shows our customers value what we do” says Josh Norgate who owns Access4Lofts Blackpool. In short, Access4lofts cares about what they do. No high pressure selling, never letting anyone down, working within customer’s budgets, always turning up on time, finishing a job in the shortest time possible and clearing up afterwards are basic undertakings for the team. If you have a loft and space is getting a little tight at time, Access4lofts might just have the answer for you. Contact them for a chat, you will be surprised at what they can do for you!

Time to relax...

W

alking along the beach in the glorious sunshine, I took a five minute stroll towards the High Street. After crossing the lights, I noticed a newcomer to St Annes. In what used be the Information Centre; and a long time back, a Tram Terminus in the Lytham St. Anne’s line, there is now a delightful Ice Cream Parlour/Cafe, complete with it’s own pretty and very sunny courtyard with seating for 24 as well as another 24 inside. Speaking of the inside, it’s bright and airy providing the most wonderful home-made cakes and cheesecakes, fabulous coffee and the ever popular Walling’s Ice Cream. Their ‘Whippy’ soft Ice Cream is also astonishingly good ! Run by proprietors James and Rod, the small team provides a truly excellent service as well as a friendly little oasis just off the High Street . The Clock House Ice Cream Parlour (open 8AM - 7PM) can be found at 67 St Anne’s Road West, FY8 1SB - just look out for the two kiosks in the shadow of B&M’s in St Annes Square.

Hazel beat arthritis with collagen Sprightly septuagenarian Hazel Hallatt had always enjoyed an active lifestyle, until the onset of osteoarthritis threatened to curtail her walking, swimming, golf and yoga. “The arthritis flared up a decade ago, affecting my hands, knees and back. My mobility was restricted and I was in a lot of pain,” said Hazel, 75. “I feared my days of exercise were over.” Hazel turned to Collagen Plus, a natural collagen supplement and found an immediate and remarkable upturn. “Collagen Plus has turned my life around. I am so active, any discomfort is minimal and my doctor has been amazed by both my mobility levels and how the osteoarthritis is being managed.” • Collagen Plus is a unique 3-in-1 nutritional drink containing collagen, glucosamine and chondroitin to help rebuild and maintain joint cartilage. he LOVEmyBEACH Active Coast campaign was launched at locations across the Fylde coast yesterday to showcase the upcoming programme of sports and activities taking place throughout the summer on our beaches and coastline. The programme launched on 11th June with activities taking place at Fleetwood beach and boating lake, St Annes beach and Blackpool central beach. Walking, beach volleyball, wheelchair accessible cycling, cricket, kayaking and yoga were all showcased on the day, highlighting the variety of beach and coastal activities available for different ages and abilities. In 2012, a range of organisations came together to form the Turning Tides Partnership with a shared vision of reducing pollution in the regions rivers, lakes and sea. At this time, 18 of the regions bathing waters were predicted to fail the stricter EU standards for water quality which were scheduled to take effect from 2015. Through collaborative working, in just four years, the partnership turned the tide on the North West coast. In 2016 and 2017 the partnership celebrated the fact that all 30 bathing water locations passed the stricter EU standards for water quality. The collaborative effort also resulted in Blackpool Council obtaining the Blue Flag award, the international standard for the best beaches in the world, at Blackpool South which it has now held for the past 3 years. As part of the bathing water improvements project Turning Tides partners created LOVEmyBEACH in 2013; a campaign which inspires people to make changes to the way they live in order to drive environmental change. Through region wide campaigns and onthe-ground officers working in the community LOVEmyBEACH has been a great success, engaging thousands of people to take action. With these bathing water improvements (all 8 bathing waters

Love our beaches on the Fylde coast rated Good or Excellent for water quality in 2017) the Turning Tides board asked; what next? Board members felt that there was an opportunity that this clean and safe space could now be used to help improve resident’s health and wellbeing. With this in mind, Dr Arif Rajpura, Director of Public Health at Blackpool, was invited to join the board. Dr Arif Rajpura shared their vision stating ‘It’s time to change perceptions about the coast. The beach shouldn’t just be seen as a place for visitors; it’s a clean and safe environment where a healthy lifestyle can be enjoyed year round. We want to promote the environmental improvements achieved by the Turning Tides partnership and showcase what activities can be enjoyed here; from a game of cricket on the beach to a simple stroll along the sea wall.’ Bringing together Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre council as well as support from the CCG’s and other leisure partners such as the YMCA, Healthier Fleetwood and Blackpool Football Club Community Trust work began on developing a coastal programme. Councillor Lynne Bowen, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Health and Community Engagement at Wyre

Council was in attendance at the Fleetwood event and added ‘We are incredibly proud of our coast in Wyre and the Active Coast is a great way to showcase the quality of our beaches. Ferry Beach and Marine Beach in Fleetwood have recently received Seaside Awards, as well as Jubilee Beach and Rossall Beach in Cleveleys, distinguishing them as amongst the best beaches in the country. Our beaches are a great place to take part in the range of activities we have to offer and to get active, so make sure you pay a visit and try something new!’ Events and activities for the summer can be found at www. facebook.com/LmBActiveCoast Organisations or individuals who are interested in running activities on the beach are advised to contact the following: For Fylde - Ian Brookes, Sports Officer on ian.brookes@fylde. gov.uk For Blackpool - Email active. blackpool@blackpool.gov.uk For Wyre - Carol Southern, Active Lives and Community Engagement Manager on Carol. LINK-Mag Recipe Prep time: 25 minutes Cook time: 45 minutes

You’ll need: Crunchy Topping 75g caster sugar 75g plain flour 60g unsalted butter Choux Pastry 60g unsalted butter 1 tsp caster sugar 1/4 tsp salt 60ml whole milk 60ml water 40g plain flour 45g strong white bread flour 2-3 large eggs, beaten Filling 400g strawberries 2 sprigs of lemon thyme 2 tbsp. caster sugar 600ml double cream 1 tsp vanilla extract What to do: To make the crunchy topping for the eclairs mix together the sugar and the flour, add the butter and rub together until it starts to form a dough. Use your hand to press together into a uniform dough. Place between two sheets of parchment and roll out until it is about 2mm thick. Place onto a baking tray and freeze until needed. To make the choux pastry place the butter, sugar, salt, milk and water into a medium sized saucepan and bring to a rolling boil. Once at temperature pour in both of the flours and immediately mix together with a wooden spoon, until it forms into a ball of dough and there is a dry 26

Strawberry and Lemon Thyme Eclairs Filled with Vanilla Chantilly with Thyme and fresh strawberries layer on the base of the pan. Tip the pastry into a large bowl and set aside for 5 minutes. Add the eggs a little at a time beating until combined before adding more. Add enough egg until the pastry is thick, glossy and has reached dropping consistency. Place the pastry into a piping bag fitted with a plain round piping tip (roughly 1cm wide). Line two baking trays with parchment paper and draw ten 12cm lines onto the back of the parchment, 6 per sheet. Pipe the choux pastry into eclairs, using the lines as guides. Remove the crunchy topping from the freezer and cut into strips 12cmx1.5cm and place one of top of each eclair (this gives the eclairs a crunchy topping but also helps give a uniform shape, making them look more professional). Bake in the oven at 180c (160c fan) for about 30-35 minutes or until the choux is golden brown. Set aside until cooled. To make the filling hull 300g of the strawberries and cut into small dice.

Mix together with 1 tbsp. of the sugar and the thyme. Set aside for an hour or so to macerate. Place the cream, vanilla and remaining sugar into a large bowl and whisk until the mixture holds soft peaks Cut the eclairs through the middle and fill the base of each eclair with the strawberries (leaving the juice in the bowl). Place the cream into a piping bag and pipe the cream on top of the strawberries. Hull the remaining strawberries and cut into quarters, pressing into the sides of the cream as decoration. Top with the eclair lids and dust with a little icing sugar. Once filled the eclairs are best served within a couple hours of assembling but the baked eclairs can be prepared a day ahead. Tip: To get perfect eclairs you need to pipe the eclairs very neatly. Any imperfections in the piping can show up in the baked eclairs. Photo credit: berryworld.com

The Big Butterfly Count

T

he public is being asked to take 15 minutes to participate in the count, which runs from July 20 to August 11 (prime time for butterfly activity), to help identify trends in species that will aid us in planning how to protect butterflies from extinction, as well as understanding the effect of climate change on wildlife. Butterflies react very quickly to change in their environment which makes them excellent biodiversity indicators. Butterfly declines are an early warning for other wildlife losses. Almost three-quarters of UK butterfly species have decreased in population during the last decade, while the number of UK’s larger moths has crashed in the past 40 years, according to a recent reports by a group of leading conservation organisations. The Big Butterfly Count takes place from July 20th to August 11th. For details go to www. bigbutterflycount.org. 28

The Butterfly Conservation offers the following tips to attract butterflies to your garden: • Choose sunny, sheltered spots when planting nectar plants, because butterflies like warmth.

• Select different plants to attract a wider variety of species.

• Prolong flowering by deadheading regularly, mulching with organic compost and watering well.

• Don’t use insecticides and pesticides which kill butterflies and many pollinating insects.

• Grow plants which will attract butterflies including

buddleia, Verbena bonariensis, lavender, perennial wallflower, marjoram, phlox, nasturtium, escallonia, cone flower, aster, sweet rocket, lobelia and herbs including chives, thyme and mint.

LINK-Mag Motoring

VOLKSWAGEN POLO SEL by Rob Auchterlonie

B

y replacing the four hooves of a horse with four rubber clad wheels, the world – and all the socio economic groups in it – suddenly had a high degree of freedom, and the impact of the motor car has been nothing short of phenomenal. Motoring snobbery has been with us from day one, but one thing remains constant. We all love our cars, big or small, fast or slow, luxurious or downright utilitarian (for those Trabant lovers out there). Not that there’s anything utilitarian about the latest Volkswagen Polo, a car which is conservatively estimated to have sold over 1.4 million units in the UK since its 1975 debut. 30

If you’ve been around a bit - and I’ll hold my hand up to that - then you’ll remember the Polo being the small entry level model into the burgeoning VW range. Not any more. Well, not small anyway. Today’s Polo is an equivalent size to the Golf as it used to be. Pardon the pun but the Polo’s got a (w)hole lot going for it. It’s grown in to a decent sized family offering, the five door only model sampled here offering decent space for the family man and his brood. There have been times over the years when some cars on offer have

ADVERTISE - Book Online www.link-mag.co.uk 0800 970 7687 or sales@link-mag.co.uk

And as ever Polo majors on the Q word – quality. I always used to look on chrome trimming as a tacky touch and not a very good way to tart up the interior of a car – look at Fords of old for the answer to that one – but nowadays manufacturers like VW have got it down to a fine art.

FASTFACTS:

Volkswagen Polo SEL; list price £19,530; 999cc turbocharged three cylinder direct injection petrol, 115ps, 200Nm; seven speed DSG; top speed 124mph, 0-62mph 9.5secs; fuel – urban 49.6, extra urban 65.7, combined 58.9; CO2 109g/km; will it fit the garage? 4053/1946/1461 (l/w/h).

displayed the pulling power of a primary school tug of war team – and that’s with four cylinders. Not so any more, even when you lop off 25 per cent of the bits that spend their life headbutting thousands of small explosions. Turning petrol into motion is an expensive business these days, so maybe you can see the logic in a three cylinder powerplant like the one here. Fewer moving parts using less fuel yet still able

to ‘do the business’. Volkswagen certainly can, which is why you’ll find such a pocket powerhouse under the bonnet in every marque that the group produces, be it an Audi, SEAT, Skoda or VW. And it’s under the bonnet of the new Polo that we find this one, a zippy little unit that has won praise over various continents and displays a lot of very user-friendly features. Refinement is one, economy another.

Polo isn’t really a stand out car on the road thought the latest version does have a bit more going for it as you cast a critical eye over its lines. It now has the obligatory LED headlights as well as a raft of state of the art driver assistance systems and an eight inch infotainment system on which to keep track of it all. If the three cylinder engine doesn’t float your boat, there’s a decent range of others to choose from, but in its defence I will say that a mixed cross country run saw it flash up over 55mpg – its combined figure is given as 58.9, so it’s got the economy side of things licked. Only available in five door set-up, trim levels range from S, SE, beats, SEL, R-Line, GTI and GTI+, with prices starting at £13,855. Add in a few extras and you could be presented with a £22,450 bill for the SEL sampled here. Suspension seems well set up, soft enough to be comfortable but with a firmness that takes out the worst of the ruts in the road. The cabin is a decent enough size, exceptionally well finished with good quality materials and one to be appreciated. It has that typical VW prestige appeal. FOR: it’s a Volkswagen AGAINST: it’s an expensive Volkswagen

ive generations of one family came together to celebrate a very special three digit birthday milestone for a resident at The Hamptons Care Centre in Lytham St Annes. Eda Hughes marked her 100th birthday surrounded by family, friends and the staff team at The Hamptons where she has been a resident for the last five months. Joining Eda for her special day and birthday party were her siblings, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren, plus the many friends she has made while living at The Hamptons. She was also joined by the Mayor, Peter Collins, and his wife Caroline. Born and brought up in West Yorkshire, Eda’s working life started as a housekeeper for a local vicar. At the beginning of World War II, Eda was called up and joined the WRAF in 1940. She also worked in a TB Hospital. The remainder of her working life, she spent as a chef in schools and other places. Eda married Philip Hughes in July 1944. They enjoyed dancing together, especially ballroom dancing, and often travelled to Blackpool to dance in the Tower Ballroom. This is why Eda chose to move to the area, to live with her daughter Denise, when, sadly, Philip passed away in 2008 aged 88 years.

Walking on the beaches

I

n 2018, there should be nothing holding visitors and residents back from ‘getting their feet wet’ on our beaches. Beach and water quality in the region has improved tremendously over the last thirty years resulting in all thirty bathing water locations in the North-West passing the EU water quality standards for the past two years. There are four classifications of bathing water quality; Excellent, Good, Sufficient or Poor. This year in the North West there are 11 ‘excellent’ rated beaches and bathing waters including Blackpool South. This summer eleven beaches across the North West of England will be flying flags that tell the public they are among the best beaches in the country. Ten beaches were awarded the Seaside Award - Keep Britain Tidy’s own award for beaches that meet the very highest standards for cleanliness and facilities. The UK’s bathing water season which runs from May until the 30th September every year; is the period when the Environment Agency monitors the water quality every week. Signs are displayed at each designated bathing water area highlighting the current classification as well as other useful information. The current classifications and results of the samples taken throughout the bathing season are also available on the LOVEmyBEACH website alongside a list of beach facilities and tide times. Throughout summer the ‘LOVEmyBEACH’ campaign is calling for residents to try something new and visit one of the beautiful beaches along the North-West coast. A trip to the seaside is a value for money day out that can span the generations, here are some suggestions on how to get your feet wet: 1. FLY A KITE at St Anne’s 2. BUILD A SANCASTLE at Blackpool 3. TAKE PHOTOS on the dunes between St Annes and Blackpool 4. WALK THE DOG at one of twenty five beaches in the region with minimal dog restrictions As a way to inspire others to make use of the coast, LOVEmyBEACH is encouraging everyone to share photos of them at the beach using the hashtag #getyourfeetwet. Improvements in water quality across the region are a result of the Turning Tides partnership; a selection of organisations including local authorities, the Environment Agency, United Utilities and Natural England, who came together in 2012 with an ambition to reduce pollution in the regions rivers, lakes and seas. Through effective co-ordination of improvement works

including £1 billion of investment by United Utilities, £7 million investment through Catchment Sensitive Farming to reduce dirty water running off farmland and the development of the LOVEmyBEACH campaign, the partnership has been cited by Defra as a model of good practice. Neil Jack, Chair of the Turning Tides partnership and Chief Executive at Blackpool Council said: ‘Our bathing waters are so much cleaner today than they were twenty, ten or even only five years ago. That improvement is down to significant investment and partnership work from the Turning Tides partners and having a clear vision that clean bathing waters contribute to creating family friendly seaside resorts and boosting the North West economy as a whole. Our beaches are being cleaned regularly by hundreds of staff and volunteers throughout the summer and are being sampled regularly by the Environment Agency to check they are safe to swim in. We have some of the best, award-winning, coastlines in Europe but if we are to continue to keep them that way then we need the public’s help. Simple actions like putting your litter in the bin, picking up after your dog and not feeding the birds can help make sure that our beaches continue to stay fantastic.’ When you visit the beach please make sure you follow these simple steps to help the LOVEmyBEACH campaign and improve our beaches for generations to come: 1. Always put rubbish in a bin - if you can’t find one or it’s full, simply take it home. 2. Understand dog restrictions on beaches – dog restrictions are in place in seven beaches across the North West however there are miles of coast where dogs can be walked. Whichever beach you’re on though, always, pick up your dog poo; the tide doesn’t wash away the problem. 3. Think about how you can help from home - flushing wet wipes down the toilet or pouring used kitchen fat down the sink increases the risk of sewage leaking into rivers and the sea. Support for Brian House Children’s Hospice

Alanna Smith, 19 months, meets an owl from Littledovetails and Owls.

F

rom cricketers to cricket eaters, Brian House Children’s Hospice has had some very special visitors as children and staff celebrated Children’s Hospice Week back in May. The national celebration of children’s hospices around the country kicked off in Bispham with style as staff dressed in panto costumes, donated by Blackpoolbased ‘UK Productions’, in an effort to make as many memories as possible for the children and their families. The week was launched with a visit of two well-known friends of the hospice – Lancashire County cricketer Steven Croft and figure skater Dan Whiston, fresh from ITV’s ‘Dancing on Ice’ tour. Children were also treated to a display of small animals and artefacts from Blackpool Zoo, including a Tenrec, a Cockroach and a Snake. Steven, who is supporting Brian House as he celebrates his testimonial year, said ‘It was great to see the children exploring the different animals and items from Blackpool Zoo, and I really enjoyed being part of the experience to make memories for these children. I’m amazed at what goes on at Brian House. It’s not a place of sadness at all, as you might expect, but a place where children can really have fun and do things they would never be able to do otherwise. I have a huge amount of respect and admiration for everyone who makes Brian House what it is.’ Dan, who has long been a supporter of Brian House, said he was impressed at how fearless the children were when it came to touching the animals. He said ‘It’s always an absolute delight to come to Brian House and just be a part of the day. I’ve come to learn that a normal day at Brian House is an extraordinary

day anywhere else, and it’s a total pleasure to have been able to visit for Children’s Hospice Week. I am honoured to be able to support this fantastic and vital facility.’ Throughout the week the children also enjoyed an owl display thanks to ‘Littledovetails and Owls’, and a visit by Sea Life Blackpool. Brian House Clinical Manager Carol Wylde said ‘It has been a wonderful week here at Brian House as we have celebrated Children’s Hospice Week 2018. The week was all about making lasting memories, and I think we’ve done just that. From seeing all our staff dressed as pantomime characters – when some of our children may never get to experience pantomime – to touching exotic creatures even adults would never be able to do. It was lovely to be able to welcome back Steven and Dan, and see them get involved in the activities with the children. I hope we’ve been able to make some memories for them too.’ To find out more about Brian House Children’s Hospice and how you can help them visit hwww. trinityhospice.co.uk/brian-house

T

he Tourism Society has announced that Blackpool will be the destination for its 2019 Tourism Symposium. The event will take place in the autumn of 2019 on dates to be confirmed at Blackpool’s new Winter Gardens Conference Centre opening in summer next year. The announcement was made on 5th June in Greenwich, London at the end of a successful 2018 Symposium. Long regarded as the UK’s number one seaside resort, Blackpool is ideally placed to host the Tourism Symposium at its new Winter Gardens Conference Centre. The Centre will have two floors of adaptable space to facilitate the main plenary session, exhibition and break out areas. A wide range of hotels will be available for

The Tourism Society’s newly elected Chairman, Kevin Kaley, said ‘I am delighted that Blackpool has kindly offered to host the 2019 Tourism Symposium. There is no doubt that the resort will continue to grow in popularity following its extensive regeneration programme over the past five years. Blackpool is set to welcome several new branded hotels during the next two years and represents an outstanding example of how a destination’s tourism economy can be transformed.’

Caring for your pet

H

oliday time is upon us, and some lucky pets may be joining us on our summer getaways. With this in mind, it’s important to take precautions before you go away. It is a legal requirement for dogs to be microchipped. PDSA also recommend cats are microchipped as it’s the most reliable way of identifying them, and improves the chances of them being returned if lost. PDSA Vet Olivia Anderson-Nathan said: “One of the most heartbreaking scenarios is when an injured animal is brought to us but isn’t microchipped, or the details on the chip aren’t up to date. You know the pet has a loving owner who will be desperate to know where they are, but there’s no way to let them know what has happened. These pets can end up in rescue centres if their owners are never found, which if they have strayed long distances may never happen. A simple microchip avoids all this.” To help pet owners, Olivia has provided some top ‘need-to-knows’ when it comes to microchipping:

• While cats don’t require ID, it’s the

law for dogs to wear a collar with ID tag when outside the home. Legally, the collar or tag needs to show the owner’s name and address but including a phone number can be helpful so you can be contacted easily if someone finds your pet.

• A single microchip will last for your

pet’s lifetime. The chip can sometimes move around a little, which is why vets will scan over a pet’s whole body when checking for one. If the owner moves or a pet is rehomed they don’t need a new chip as the owner can just

Microchipping pets update their details with the microchip database – but it’s very important to remember to do this!

• Getting a microchip

shouldn’t be too sore – they are smaller than a grain of rice. It’s similar to getting any other injection like a vaccination and many pets don’t even notice it happening. It goes under the skin between their shoulder blades. They’re made of non-reactive material so shouldn’t cause any reaction or pain once inserted.

• If your pet is found as a

stray and brought to a vet or rescue centre, they will scan for the chip number then get in touch with the microchip company for the owner’s details so they can

contact you. This is why it’s really important to make sure your details are always kept up-to-date in the database.

• Microchipping costs can vary,

but many councils, charities and veterinary clinics offer discounted or even free microchipping schemes. It’s worth researching what’s on offer in your area to get the best option for you and your pet.

• Microchipped pets stand a much

better chance of being reunited with their owners should they ever go missing. For more information visit www.pdsa.org.uk/microchip

Money matters with Martin Lewis

Don’t believe reports of the death of bank charges reclaiming

B

ank charges don’t need to be fair. That was the sad, and surprising, ruling of the Supreme Court back in 2009, when it overturned the high court on a technicality. The campaign to reclaim unfair bank charges had been raging for five years until then, with over £1 billion paid out by that point. It was the campaign which really kick started my career. With over 6 million downloads of my templates to get money back - I was referred to as the campaign’s “big gob in chief”. Yet reports of the death of bank charge reclaiming are exaggerated. Firstly, its effect has echoed for years. So much so, that these days no UK banks charge those hideous £35 per transaction fees for busting your overdraft limit; that could mean you spend £20 on shopping in five different shops, and find yourself owing £175 in charges. If you couldn’t pay those, charges on charges, meant it’d snowball into thousands. The banking regulator the FCA now requires banks to have a monthly cap on unarranged overdraft fees.

You can still charges now

reclaim

More importantly, while being able to reclaim every charge regardless are long gone, some can still get the money back. The key is that the charges need to have contributed 40

to genuine financial hardship; such as being unable to repay your mortgage, rent, energy, or credit cards, or regularly having payments returned due to a lack of cash. If this has happened to you, then write to the bank explaining your situation, and ask for a refund of all the charges over that period. There’s full step-by-step help (and those template letters) available at

If they do, don’t worry. That’s just part of the dance. Don’t let it put you off. If you think your charges have been unfair and caused you hardship, carry on. The next stage is to simply move on to the free www.financial-ombudsman.org. uk service where you will get an impartial adjudication. To inspire you, here’s another success. Scott emailed: “Initially the bank said I wasn’t due anything, despite being stuck in an overdraft cycle. I then used your info & was offered £576. Thank you.” If you’re not in hardship, it’s very unlikely you’ll get money back. However, if it’s a first time one-off charge, it’s always worth politely asking the bank to remove it. Often (no promises) it’ll wipe it first time.

Cut the cost overdraft www.mse.me/bankcharges. And indeed successes still do drip in, as Holly tweeted me: “@ MartinSLewis thanks to your advice I have just received £923 credit from Nat West of unfair overdraft charges. Very happy!” When you ask, some banks will simply pay out. Unsurprisingly though, most won’t. They may even write you a very formal legally drafted letter which tells you it’s a load of baloney and you aren’t entitled to anything.

of

your

Even without bank charges, overdrafts are often a more expensive way to borrow than credit cards. So for some, debit cards are debt cards too. Of course budgeting to avoid being in your overdraft is the best thing. If it’s too late for that, ensuring your overdraft is a cheap as possible, will help you get rid of it quicker. There are some 0% overdraft bank accounts – which is of course as cheap as it gets. These will require you to pass a (not usually too harsh) credit check to be accepted. My two top picks are:

Martin Lewis

1. First Direct.

www.FirstDirect. com offers most a £250 interestfree overdraft. If you switch you also get a choice of one of a variety of freebies including tech products such as £170 Bose wireless headphones, a £150 Expedia voucher or an online course. And it’s won every customers service poll I’ve ever done. So if you’ve a small overdraft this is ideal for getting rid of it.

2. Nationwide.

The www. Nationwide.co.uk Flex Direct account offers most a one year 0% overdraft, then 50p a day after – so use the interest-free time to clear the debt (if not after the year, if it’s lower but not gone, you could then shift again to First Direct.)

Credit limits with Nationwide can

be a lot larger, though frustratingly there’s no way to find out other than applying. For larger amounts, if you’ve a decent credit score it’s also possible to shift your overdraft to a specialist 0% ‘money transfer’ credit card for up to 36 months 0%, though you’ll pay a fee of up to 4% of the amount transferred. Full details and top picks on that in www.mse.me/moneytransfers.

This is especially true if it’s made your overdraft more expensive, as has happened within the last year for many Halifax, Lloyds and Bank of Scotland customers. It changed its charges making it cheaper for those with small overdrafts and costlier for those with big ones. If that move hurt you and you’re struggling speak to it and make sure you say “I’ve not been treated fairly”.

What to do if you can’t shift your overdraft

If it won’t help you, you could then take it to the financial ombudsman, and ask it to intervene.

If your overdraft is really expensive and you can move it to 0%, speak to your bank and see what it can do for you. You have a right with financial firms to be ‘treated fairly’ and an overdraft with no way out because of its cost, is arguably not fair.

Blackpool from A to Z

E

xplore the resort town of Blackpool in this fully illustrated book the ‘A-Z of Blackpool Places-People-History’ by Allan W. Wood and Chris Bottomley. Blackpool is unique in that it was ‘created’ from sparsely populated farmland and villages for the purpose of visitors having fun and pleasure. The development of the town over the last 170 years or so has led to a diverse modern history, which could be said to reflect in a large part the history of entertainment in the UK. However, whilst the town’s most instantly recognisable attractions are well established, the town continuously seeks to adapt to secure its place as the UK’s number one tourist destination. From its most famous attraction and landmark, the Tower, the home of the world famous Tower Ballroom, to the Matthews final of 1953, local authors Allan Wood and Chris Bottomley take the reader on an alphabetical journey visiting Blackpool’s most interesting places and meeting some of its most famous residents and visitors. Fully illustrated with photographs from the past and present. Available in Paperback, Kindle, Kobo and iBook formats. Visit www.amberley-books.com for further details.
