30th Annual Fireworks Display The Poulton-Le-Fylde annual Bonfire and Fireworks display returns this November As autumn begins and summer is left behind, one of the consolations is that we can look forward to the traditional festivities to come. Christmas and New Year are ahead of course but before that comes an annual commemoration observed on 5th November. It’s history begins with the events of 5th November 1605, when Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding explosives the plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords. Celebrating the fact that King James I had survived the attempt on his life, people lit bonfires around London, and months later the introduction of the Observance of 5th November Act enforced an annual public day of thanksgiving for the plot’s failure. For the last thirty years Poulton-Le-Flyde Rotary Club has organised a Bonfire and Fireworks Display on Cottam Hall Playing fields. This is now one of the last major events, along with Poulton Gala, for everybody in the community. Over the years the event has grown and families can come along and not only enjoy just the bonfire 36

and fireworks but live music from local bands and a variety of food and drink. The Rotary Club has two purposes in organising this event, firstly it provides a safe environment where people of all ages (and especially children) can enjoy the show, secondly it enables money to be raised for a whole range of charities both locally and further afield. Brian House, for example, has benefitted from the generosity of the people of Poulton and further afield who have attended the event. So on 5th November bring the family along to Cottam Hall and enjoy another Poulton Bonfire. Gates open at 6pm, bonfire lit qt 7pm and fireworks at 7:30. They are now open at the new premises on Old Tom Lane, Stalmine, FY6 0JR. Tuesdays - Sundays 11am - 5pm with a new telephone number 01253 703000. They have 30 cats all in need of new homes and guinea pigs, gerbils, degus though there are still no dogs at the time of going to press. Four particular cats have been there the longest, since they arrived in May. Declan, Jemima, Storm and Melanie. The RSPCA are desperate to get the long stays homed, the only downside is that none of the four can live with other cats. They are only suitable for older children and quieter households too. Declan is 3-6 years, Jemima is 14 years, Storm is 7-9 years and Melanie is 5 years. Another special one is Vanilla who needs a home: Vanilla is a very friendly boy who loves attention. He was removed from a house after being found living in very poor conditions. Due to this, Vanilla has been poorly whilst at the centre so needs a home where he is the only cat . He also needs to be kept indoors. Please don’t let that put you off though, he has since made a good recovery! Vanilla is currently in a foster home as he was getting quite stressed in the cattery. If you think you can offer Vanilla the lovely home he desperately deserves, then please contact the Centre.

Then there is Rufus who is in need of a farm or stables type of home. He is not an indoor cat he is free to adopt due to us wanting him to just find a stables or farm. He was found roaming for food at the old RSPCA site so they brought him with them to find a new home and see that he gets fed properly. He is not suitable around children. He is about 4-6 years old. Views sought on life in Wyre Wyre residents are being urged to share their views on the borough and help shape services in their neighbourhoods. Wyre Council wants to know what people think about everything from rubbish collections and affordable housing to job opportunities and anti-social behaviour, in its biennial survey Life In Wyre. Leader of Wyre Council, Councillor Peter Gibson, said: ‘This is an opportunity to directly influence council services and priorities in your area. We want to hear about what we’re doing well and how we can improve. 84% of residents told us in the last survey that they were satisfied with the area they live in however they also made it clear that more needed to be done about environmental crime including fly-tipping, dog fouling and littering. He continued: ‘Since then, tackling this issue has been a top priority; we’ve introduced online reporting where locations can be mapped and invested in systems that allow incidents to be picked up on mobile devices by officers who can respond immediately. SEATLeon Cupra 280 By Rob Auchterlonie The car that briefly held the record for the fastest front wheel drive lap set round the legendary Nurburgring race track is now available to you, me and anyone else who wants to buy into the Cupra cult. That’s what SEAT unwittingly started when they unleashed their first car to carry that name back in the year 2000 – a car that was then perceived to be an acceptable alternative to the ubiquitous Golf GTI for those on a tighter budget and not driven by badge snobbery. The powerhouse performance of the newcomer is possibly not a great deal of use on the M25 or any big city ring road, I’ll concede, but it’s good to know you’ve got it in your back pocket for when the roads open out and the traffic thins…. A decade and a bit on from that first Cupra and they’ve produced a car that is the embodiment of ‘auto emocion’ – SEAT’s catchphrase. The Golf might be the ‘must

have’ for many petrolheads, but the Leon Cupra has built up no less of a cult following. Built on the same VW Group platform, it’ll out perform the Golf on sheer figures, yet undercut it on price. It’s the fastest and most powerful car the Spanish manufacturer has ever built – but it’s equally at home being used as an everyday family car. And as such it’s available as either a three door SC or five door hatch, displaying a potent mix of Spanish flair and German quality. It did its record-breaking lap in under eight minutes, and it probably wouldn’t take you much longer behind the wheel to be wooed by its abilities. You can either opt for 265PS or 280PS output, and in either guise the response is immediate, the handling sharp and reassuring and interchangeable via the onboard Cupra Driver Profile. That gives you active suspension management using the new DCC Dynamic Chassis Control system. Plenty of options but try the Cupra setting for the assault on the eardrums alone.

MOTORING Both versions, with either six speed DSG or six speed manual, will hit 62mph (100kph) in under six seconds and there’s the added advantage of a electrically controlled mechanical front differential for a better high speed cornering experience. A soaking wet Mallory Park racetrack for the UK launch of the car last week wasn’t perhaps the best environment in which to explore the Cupra’s capabilities. Or maybe it was, because the lower speeds involved gave just that little bit more time to appreciate the interaction between the bits that make this such an impressive performer. Its 350Nm of torque gives it a lusty spread of power from 1750rpm to 5300rpm – fast and safe overtaking is never an issue here. Yet for everyday use it won’t hit you in the wallet – average consumption is a claimed 42.8 for manual models, and up to 44.1 for DSG equipped variants.

The Co2 figure is commendably low at 149g/ km, a lot less than the last second gen Cupra R pumped out from its 265PS engine. And it’s easy to overlook the fact all this comes from a mere 2.0 litre four cylinder engine – a fact that didn’t go un-noticed by my driving colleague, who remarked it produced the same power as his personal Porsche from about half the size! No question which is the more practical for everyday use though.

MOVEMBER

he ladies have Race for Life supporting Breast Cancer Awareness, and in recent years, November has become the month for the lads to raise money for men’s health. Dubbed ‘Movember,’ the idea is that on October 31st, men shave for the last time for the next 30 days, and grow and groom a moustache in return for sponsorship money. In fact under official Movember rules, each ‘Mo Bro,’ is supposed to use the power of the moustache to create conversations about men’s health and must conduct themselves like a true gentleman. As the popularity of Movember has grown, more and more employers who may normally have a stricter facial hair policy, are supporting the movement, even setting up work teams and or company events in support of the cause such is the increase in participation. Now for some men, growing a moustache is not necessarily easily achievable and likewise for others (my husband included) they spend the entire year with a fabulously groomed moustache, not just in November.

MOVEMBER And for those who already have or cannot grow a moustache, there are several events that go on up and down the country they can get involved in to support Mens Health. These include (but are certainly not limited to) official Movember Gala events; where moustaches are showcased,people dress up, there’s entertainment on hand, as well as competitions, including a ‘Man of Movember’ award. You can buy tickets for these events for £20 each or fundraise £50 each (or £80 for a couple) in return for a ticket. There are events throughout all parts of the UK, including Edinburgh, Cardiff, London and Belfast towards the end of November. But where did such an influential movement start?In Australia in 2003 by just two friends Travis Garone and Luke Slattery, who got 30 other people to join them, in that first year, the logo was designed and rules were set out (rules that are still the same 11 years on), one of the original 30 participants, Adam Gerone registered the company and set up a website with Justin Coghlan running the Queensland campaign the following year, and in 2004 Spain and the UK joined in the event with all costs being covered by the four founders. All donations went to the PCFA (Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia) and it was the single largest cheque they had ever received! They were the first official beneficiary’s of the now unstoppable Movember! The campaign has steadily grown from there and now supports many aspects of mens health with several partnerships and more and more countries now taking part. So much so that since 2003, over four million people have participated, 770 men’s health projects have been funded, 12 countries take part and an incredible £346 million has been raised! Even celebrities get on board, in 2013 Ashton Kutcher, Dynamo, Stephen Fry and Damian Lewis are just a few examples of those who publicly got on board and either grew a moustache or raised money towards the Movember campaign. Not bad for an idea from two guys having a casual chat about recurring trends!

In only the eleven years since its conception, it has changed the face of men’s health and made massive steps towards raising awareness and helping to fund projects to improve the lives of many. Whether it be prostate cancer, testicular cancer or mental health, the companies vision is to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health, and with the obvious growth in popularity of the campaign, not only have they made an enormous difference and definitely achieved their objective, they have surpassed it. So this November, whether you choose to become a Mo Bro or a Mo Sista, or just come across someone raising money for the cause, think about your husband, your father, your son or your brother, consider how invaluable they are to you, and give what you can to a fantastic cause. Remembrance Day

“W

hen you go Home, tell them of us and say, For your Tomorrow, we gave our Today” those famous words written by Gloucestershire born John Maxwell Edmonds in 1916 are quoted every November. And for the next four years, Remembrance Sunday; when we remember military and civilian men and women who gave their lives; will be especially poignant as it is now a century since the First World War. But what does Remembrance Sunday mean to us one hundred years on? As we keep having to add conflicts onto the list of events to remember, are we failing to learn the lessons our ancestors fought so hard to teach us to avoid future conflict? The First World War gave every family a story, every family were affected, and an entire generation were practically wiped out. But in November of 1918, that same generation were finally told they were at peace, parties erupted in the streets, communities were finally able to try and mourn their losses. The world was sure that no conflict of that scale would ever be seen again. The date was 11th November, and it has since remained marked as a day to honour those losses, as well as further losses from further conflicts. In every town up and down the country this November like every other, there will be services of Remembrance, thousands upon thousands will wear their poppies with pride and military medals will be on display.

The main difference to Remembrance Sunday to any other date in the calendar is that for that one day, it’s not about whatever political agenda or act of aggression caused the war, it’s not about the propaganda of wartime or egos of world leaders; it’s simply about the people. When young men marched to war all those years ago, they marched for their country but they wouldn’t be considering the advancement of a country’s borders or which leader would gain dominance in Europe; they were thinking of their sweetheart, their son, and/or their elderly relatives. When we learn about our history, we learn things like the date the Archduke Franz Ferdi-

nand was assassinated and why that consequently led to such a monumental loss of life. We hear phrases such as ‘trench warfare,’ and details about the battle of the Somme. What doesn’t need to be taught is the universal human suffering. The guttural loss of having to bury your young son, the heartbreak of learning your parent isn’t coming home, human emotions that don’t need to be written on school blackboards but are an innate part of our emotional makeup. In Summer 2011, the London riots were all over the news, the images of the needless violence were shocking and frightening and there were lessons to be learnt. But the lesser publicised news story was the turn out the next day. The majority of rioters were aged between 18 - 30, the disgraceful generation that our Grandfathers would be ashamed of; but within that same age group, those that turned up the next day with a broom or a bin bag, outnumbered the rioters tenfold. As in every generation, there are always those that will want to disrupt and/or harm, but a much bigger majority want to heal and protect. And that’s what Remembrance Sunday is about, the under celebrated majority. Focusing on the good news when the bad seems to saturate our attention. Millions of lost lives may not seem like good news and certainly isn’t, but knowing that within humanity, we have millions that will always stand up to the few is definitely worth being remembered. Anyone who thinks that Remembrance Sunday glorifies war is missing the point, we’re glorifying the people. Whether you’re rich, poor, British, German or American; we can all be proud of the ancestors, including our future descendants, who will do and did anything they can and could to keep their family safe. These days, we still have wars going on around the world, as everywhere, in the UK we still lose young men and women. We will probably never be able to achieve any semblance of world peace. There will always be individuals with evil residing in them, always be militant groups that try and force their way through and sadly, every generation will probably see needless loss of life. But on 11th November each year, everything else fades into the background as we focus on those brave people who protect us, guard us and ultimately save us. ‘Never have so many owed their lives to so few,’ and this year will be no different and whatever background we’re from, this November we will all be united and we will remember them.

The West Fleetwood Community Computer Clinic, an initiative of Emmanuel Church West, has handled all kinds of technologies in its first six months of operation. Some clients now make it a regular date! Whether it’s a virus riddled Laptop, a Tablet which has lost its programs and music or a phone which won’t connect to the internet, they try to help and it’s all FREE! ‘Not only can we sort out many technical issues, we also re-cycle older, donated, equipment for community use,’ said Dave Carlos who leads the team. ‘We never know what kind of issues will walk through the door but we try to help everyone, sometimes it takes several days to find an answer, but we haven’t had a failure yet! We also offer training for those who need a little help. One client wanted to save videos from YouTube for talks he was giving to community groups.

Others wanted to know how to get their music onto their tablets. We don’t know everything but we usually know where to look to find an answer.’ Hosted at the Rossall Tavern by kind permission of the landlords, Ash and Pam, the Clinic is completely free to everyone. ‘We have been offered payment but we have asked folk to make a donation to a charity instead’ said Dave. ‘We do this to support the local community and as “The church which meets in the Pub”, the Tavern is the ideal location.’ The Clinic meets regularly on Monday nights starting at 7:30pm. For information on Great Eccleston Market call 07590 043238 WYRE ARCHAEOLOGY Wyre Archaeology (WAG) offers a rare opportunity for anyone with an interest in the history of the Fylde Coast and North Preston areas to get hands on experience of practical archaeology through our regular programme of excavations and other activities. Our 2013 BIG DIG found evidence of Iron Age, Roman and Early Mediaeval presence in the Thornton area and we’ll be following up these tantalising leads in future digs. In the 2014 season we also plan to investigate the elusive ‘Danes Pad’ and if you have an idea for a dig just get in touch. WAG is open to people of all ages and has previously provided practical experience for students going on to study for degrees in Archaeology. We’re keen to have new digging members but you’d be welcome whatever skill you might be able to bring at whatever level. We’re fully insured and we provide basic training and equipment. We’re affiliated to the Council for British Archaeology and have strong links with local professionals in the field. We meet at Farmer Parr’s in Thornton on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, starting at 7.00pm, to keep everyone informed of activities and there are occasional guest speakers.
