Local RSPCA News Fundraising Events
There is an Easter event and egg hunt on Saturday 4th April, from 1am to 3pm at the RSPCA Animal Centre, Old Toms Lane, Stalmine, FY6 0JR See our new centre and attend one of our animal awareness workshops. Activities include an Egg Hunt, Pie & Peas, Coffee/ Tea Van, Face Painting, Easter Raffle, Paint an egg, Name the cat tombola, Microchipping, Cake stall, Jewellery stall. Fun for all the family and helping to raise money for the animals in our care. On April 19th there is a sponsored Dog walk in Garstang from 10:30am for two hours roughly, starting at the Millenium Mosaic. Ring or email the centre for a sponsor form or for more information. On April 10th there are free micro chipping sessions at D&J Petshop on Bond Street, Blackpool FY4 1BW We are a self supporting, independently registered charity and are here to provide care for animals which have been rescued or collected by the RSPCA Inspectors. These animals have often been mistreated, abused, neglected or abandoned by their owners. We have continuing costs to support the new rehoming centre. The day to day care of these animals and the increasing veterinary bills incurred before they can go to new homes is a huge cost to the branch. We are hoping that your business will kindly consider supporting us by sponsoring a kennel or cat pen. If you join the scheme you will be given a certificate of thanks, your company name and logo will be displayed at the animal centre and you will receive our two annual newsletters. Raven was rescued by one of the RSPCA Inspectors after she was found

as a stray in a poor condition. She is an independent lady who is on the look out for a quiet home without children and where she will be the only pet. She does need an understanding owner who will take the time to build up a bond with her. Raven does like to be stroked and is becoming much more tolerant since she arrived at the centre in December. As we don’t have any history on her, we are unsure of exactly old she is but are estimating her to be 7 to 10 years old. When Raven was found, she had a skin condition which has since improved but an old injury to one of her back legs means she doesn’t walk like your average although she is not in any pain with it. We do believe that she is quite stressed and unhappy in the cattery so think a permanent foster home would be ideal for her. A permanent foster home means that the branch will cover any medical costs and will ensure that booster vaccinations, flea treatment and wormers are also provided. PORSCHEMACAN S DIESEL By Rob Auchterlonie WE start with a special plea – but it’s not one the total git who keyed the Porsche Macan in our care is going to want to hear. Quid pro quo in this instance for this particular lowlife will be a puncture in the outside lane of the M25, at a particularly inconvenient time. Let’s say 8.14am on a Monday morning. It can only be a particularly green eye that prompted the initial deed, but while there’s no excuse for the reaction, you can retrospectively see why. The Macan - or baby Cayenne if you like – is a particularly fine looking Porsche, and while everyone thinks of a Porsche as one of the ultimate sports cars, the marque’s sales breakdown contains a growing number of SUV conquests. It’s called diversification in some camps, pandering to the market in others. Whichever one you choose, it’s been a success. Macan shares its basic architecture with Audi’s Q5, and if you squint to the point of almost closing your eyes you can see similarities. But the Porsche has a trump card in that it has the DNA – and hence the driving prowess – of others in the stable like the legendary 911 and Cayman. The clamshell bonnet, the tidy air intakes

and the four exhaust pipes are subtle hints of what lies beneath and inside the cabin it’s pure Porsche. More buttons than you can take in with a quick glance adorn the centre console, which divides the driver and front passenger. What you do notice instantly is the sheer quality of that cabin, the precise way the switches operate and the way the powered adjustable seat cossets you into a superbly comfortable driving position. It’s the S Diesel under scrutiny here – a car expected to take up the bulk of sales in the UK – and an engine that works away so unobtrusively that you can be forgiven for forgetting it’s a diesel. There’s a smoothness of progress that is very impressive indeed, and while, all is calm and serene inside it’s also easy to lose track of how quickly the speed is building up. Wind, tyre and engine noise are not things your ears pick up because it’s all so well subdued, and even when you’re giving it the beans the major telltale is the speed the needle on the rev counter whips round the scale. So, for something sporting a Porsche badge, it’s remarkably refined. The 3.0 litre V6 turbo diesel has 254bhp on tap and a thumping 580Nm of torque, fed through a seven speed auto box and four wheel drive.

MOTORING For a tall car it controls its body rolling tendencies well, but you’d expect that with so much wizardry available. Fitted here was the optional PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) with its adaptive dampers which help keep the body on an even keel. Sport mode will put your nearer to the tarmac, while off road raises the suspension by 40mm to avoid any rocks on your path. To the £43,300 basic price here for the S Diesel, Porsche had fitted a further £13,500 worth of options, making an already well equipped car even more of a showcase. And on the wintry days it was in our care the heated seats (£259) proved a real boon, warming up cold stiff bones on the run to work. Not so appreciated – by my regular co-driver - was the lack of a light for the mirror on the passenger sun visor. Personally I can never
see the attraction of trying to apply lippy in a moving car, but each to their own. .. She did have a point. There is however a lot of other useful standard equipment. Buyers who have never had the pleasure of a Porsche before get a half day driving tuition at the Porsche Driving Experience at Silverstone to set them up. SUV really does stand for Sports Utility Vehicle here….

t any one time, you are never more than a couple of clicks away from thousands and thousands of differing opinions on how you HAVE to do or not do your wedding day. So what makes this article different? Well, not a lot really...although I’ll make it clear that the below do’s and don’ts are just my views and by all means if you want to ignore it all and do it your way, that’s the joy of it being YOUR day. But should you want some guidance, digest all of the below taking it all firmly with a pinch of salt!
DONT - get yourself unnecessarily into debt over that
one day. The legal part of your day lasts about ten minutes, can you really justify spending the next few years paying offthe rest of it? Ask yourself if those silky chair covers that are adding an extra £500 to your budget will be memorable enough to be

paying for them still in a year’s time. The look in your partner’s eyes when you say ‘I do’ is a moment you’ll remember forever AND is free. As tempting as it is, try and ensure you keep the day realistically within your means. Married life starting in debt is an added strain you don’t need.
DO - remember that the term ‘perfect day’ should only
apply to the bride and groom, whatever ‘perfect’ may mean to you. If this means an underwater scuba diving wedding, go for it. If this means having a first dance to a heavy metal track, why not? A wedding day is for two people to come together in whatever way they want. To the friends who tell you ‘you can’t do that on a wedding day,’ smile politely and tell them not to do it on theirs! You’ll never please every guest, so just concentrate on making it perfect for you.

£1,000 charity boost from leisure works Scrap metal from Wyre’s new health and fitness centres has been converted into cash for Brian House. More than 12 tonnes of recyclable waste was collected from YMCA Thornton and Poulton during their respective refurbishments. Building contractor ISG wanted this to go to a local good cause and has now presented a cheque for £1,000 to the children’s hospice. Thanks were expressed to FCM Skip Hire who supplied and emptied skips free of charge, as well as weighing in the scrap metal. Similarly, to JMC Building Services who assisted with the construction project and also donated money to the pot. Danny Murray, ISG’s Northern regional managing director, commented: “We’re delighted to make this charitable donation to Brian House, which was achieved through sustainable construction practices
Wyre freezes council tax for fifth year in a row
Wyre residents are set to benefit from a fifth successive council tax freeze Wyre’s budget for the year ahead was approved at a meeting of the Full Council last night and sees council tax remain at the same rate it was back in 2010/11. Councillor Peter Gibson, Leader of Wyre Council, said: ‘I recognise that the council tax bill is one of the biggest commitments residents face, so am delighted that Wyre will again be freezing our share for the fifth year in a row. Our government funding has been halved in recent years but we’ve made £7m worth of savings by finding ways to do more for less and, most importantly, without cutting frontline services. All Wyre Council services are delivered for 49p per day for a band
and great collaboration with our supply chain partners. Minimising the volume of waste sent to landfill is a core focus for our business and is central to our 2020 Sustainability Vision.” ISG has handed over the Thornton building to Wyre Council for finishing touches and testing of the new ramp park, 10-pin bowling alley, 3G pitches and state-of-the art fitness suite. The facilities will be available to the public very shortly. An exciting new spa experience at Poulton is due to open later in the spring. D council tax payer, which represents excellent value for money. While other authorities are increasing their share of the council tax and talking about cutting services, Wyre is focussed on generating income and investment. We’re leasing or selling under-used buildings, reducing the subsidy needed to run leisure centres in the future by improving them now and continuing our excellent track record of bringing in external grant funding.’ Investment of millions is currently underway in Wyre; new sea defences are being built at Rossall, The Mount and Memorial Park in Fleetwood are being restored, the seafront regenerated and state of the art redevelopments are nearing completion at Thornton and Poulton leisure centres, with refurbishment planned at Garstang. Communities will soon be invited to bid for a share of £60,000 as Wyre’s Shaping Your Neighbourhood initiative is extended for a third year. Over £450,000 has already gone towards projects across the borough, enabling people to make a real difference in their neighbourhoods.

Win tickets to see UB40 announce further UK tour dates for 2015 due to massive demand
Following their sold-out UK tour of 2014, reggae stars UB40 have announced nineteen further dates in May and June. The Brummie legends recently completed the second leg of their ‘Getting Over The Storm’ tour, which has seen UK’s most successful reggae band play over forty UK shows to over 100,000 fans. UB40’s 2015 UK tour dates, which start at Motherwell Concert Hall on Monday 4th and end at Doncaster Racecourse on Saturday 6th June, continues the band’s preference to avoid arena venues in the UK, as founding member and principal songwriter Brian Travers explains: ‘The success of this years tour has confirmed what we already knew, that it’s better to play to 100,000 people across forty intimate venues across the whole of the country rather than playing to the same number of people at six enormous domes in the same cities. It’s a much better experience for both the band and our fans, and we get to play in towns and cities we haven’t visited for many years.’ Fellow UB40 founding member and principal songwriter Jimmy Brown agrees: ‘The atmosphere in the venues on our current tour has been amazing. You can feel it from the stage and it lifts the band to a different level. You rarely get that in an arena. We’re never happier than when we are on stage; we are a working band, it’s what we do.’ The success of the tour is bound to rankle with UB40’s former lead singer Ali Campbell, who has repeatedly attempted to discredit his former bandmates since he walked out on them in 2008. UB40 founding member Robin Campbell said: ‘Ali has been shamelessly attempting to pass himself off as a “reformed UB40” since the start of 2014, which has confused many of our fans, the media and concert promoters all over the world. We’ve had to issue writs against Ali and two other former members. If they want to be UB40 so badly they should never have chosen to leave UB40 in the first place.’

Local Kids Kick Off Big Style at World Book Day By Gemma Jackson
Local kids from Blackpool , Fylde and Wyre were part of a 5000 crowd from Cumbria, Yorkshire, Liverpool and all parts of Lancashire who took part in the flagship World Book Day event at Deepdale Stadium Preston. This mega event was the result of six months collaboration preparation and cogitation between Jake Hope children’s book consultant and Elaine Silverwood from Silver Dell book shop in Kirkham. A premiership line up of authors including Frank Cottrell Boyce, Steve Buckley, Cathy Cassidy,Cressida Cowell, Jonny Duddle and comedian Danny Wallace took to the pitch and held the 5000 spectators spellbound. A hundred schools with pupils from years 4 to 8 , waved and yelled as the various authors took the stage. Jake Hope, a former student of Blackpool Sixth said ‘this is a dream venue and a real boost for the North West to be able to host the biggest World Book Club event. This is the ninth to be staged in this country and the last one will be in Newcastle tomorrow’. Carnegie medal winning author Frank Cottrell Boyce whose latest book ‘The Astounding Broccoli Boy’
showed his natural love of books and charmed the youngsters with his reading about the boy who turned green. Having seven children of his own Frank had an immediate rapport with all 5000.Frank remarked ‘I love these events and this is the biggest ever that I have had to deal with but I cherish every minute and it’s great to see all the kids joining in ‘. Despite being bitterly cold the kids were amazing and very well behaved and the staff at the ground said they wished all the crowds were all as good but reckoned that the 5000 audience had the volume of a full house at Wembley ! The pupils picked up their signed copies of their books and then made their way back to the dozens of waiting coaches. Summing up, Elaine Silverwood from Silverdell Book Shop in Kirkham said ‘this is what it all about and I am glad to have been instrumental in engaging children with books. A truly great day and thanks for coming ….all of you !

His education and accent come from being a boarder at Ripon Grammar School, on his holidays his mother used to take him to all the shows and circuses and from a young age he wanted to be a lion tamer, not appreciating the danger! One of his stints at Bertram Mills Travelling Circus was helping with the elephants which had to get out of the vans when going up any hills. Deciding on an act to travel with he decided on budgerigars as you can easily get a dozen in one box on the back seat of a car. Norman turned the box around let eight brightly coloured budgies out and they performed marvellous tricks, walking up ladders and playing on see saws, pushing small obstacles over, all of us were entranced and appreciative of a very entertaining gentleman who raises money for the Hospice charity. The vote of thanks was given by Sue Cross. The competition of a homemade budgie was won by Bernice Healey 2nd Pat Bick 3rd Maureen Rodger. Just turn up, or contact Simon on 07966 231 211 WYRE ARCHAEOLOGY Wyre Archaeology (WAG) offers a rare opportunity for anyone with an interest in the history of the Fylde Coast and North Preston areas to get hands on experience of practical archaeology through our regular programme of excavations and other activities. Our 2013 BIG DIG found evidence of Iron Age, Roman and Early Mediaeval presence in the Thornton area and we’ll be following up these tantalising leads in future digs. In the 2014 season we also plan to investigate the elusive ‘Danes Pad’ and if you have an idea for a dig just get in touch. WAG is open to people of all ages and has previously provided practical experience for students going on to study for degrees in Archaeology. We’re keen to have new digging members but you’d be welcome whatever skill you might be able to bring at whatever level. We’re fully insured and we provide basic training and equipment. We’re affiliated to the Council for British Archaeology and have strong links with local professionals in the field. We meet at Farmer Parr’s in Thornton on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, starting at 7.00pm, to keep everyone informed of activities and there are occasional guest speakers.
