Music Sounds Better With Huw Top Radio One DJ heads to Blackpool this December This December the premier venue for new music in Blackpool will play host to the official authority in all things exciting and vibrant in the UK’s thriving new music scene, as top DJ Huw Stephens heads to The Blue Room to play a selection of amazing music, both new and old. Huw Stephens was born in Cardiff, Wales, the son of the author and literary journalist Meic Stephens. He joined Radio 1 at the age of 17 in 1999 as part of the station’s new regional output and became the youngest ever Radio 1 presenter. In 2005, Stephens gained a national slot when he became one of the replacements for the late John Peel as part of Radio 1’s One Music strand. He went on to present the weekend afternoon show and a two hour new music programme on Thursday evenings, as well as being regular daytime cover. Stephens now presents the 22:00-01:00 show, Monday to Wednesday. Stephens also presents a weekly Radio 1 free podcast. He curates the Introducing Stage, which showcases new unsigned and emerging music at the Reading and Leeds, Glastonbury, One Big Weekend and T in the Park festivals. Huw has been nominated twice for a Bafta Cymru award in the Best On Screen Presenter category for S4C music programme ‘Bandit’. 18
He also regularly presents a twice weekly show on BBC Radio Cymru and presents television programmes for BBC Wales. Huw also has his own festival, the ‘Swn festival’ in Cardiff that happens in venues across the city with local promoters and the best new bands playing. This is a real boost for the recently reopened venuein Blackpool as it continues to give upcoming local acts a platform to perform and hone their skills locally before heading further afield. CAB celebrates Wyre launch with new volunteer appeal Citizens Advice workers this week renewed their appeal for more volunteers as local dignitaries gathered to add their seal of approval to the new CAB office for Wyre.
The office has been operating since late summer but this week, the Mayor and Mayoress, Cllr Ron Shewan and his wife Brenda declared it officially open. Cllr Shewan praised the volunteers who help run it and echoed the organisation’s appeal for even more local people to give some time to support the organisation’s work in the Borough. Just like every other CAB in the UK, it depends heavily on the work of volunteers and, while many have already signed up, more are still needed. Caroline Millington, the Advice Session Supervisor at the new office said: ‘Every volunteer will be given full training so people needn’t worry that they don’t have the experience. All they need is the will to help others and a little spare time that they can give up each week.’ The new office is funded by Wyre Borough Council with premises provided rent-free by Fleetwood Town Council at its Poulton Road offices. It is operated by Lancashire West CAB which, like all others around the country, is an independent registered charity funded mainly by Local Authorities and other bodies. It operates with around 30 paid staff and more than 100 volunteers, serving a population area of nearly 500,000 in Chorley, South Ribble and West Lancashire as well as Wyre. It has already been able to help many local people with outreach work around the borough but Town Council
Chair Terry Rogers said it will now be able to offer much needed help to very many more local residents: ‘The area has some of the most deprived wards in the whole of the North West so it will be a real benefit when there are full-time CAB advisers and volunteers on hand for them to talk to.’ Cllr Pete Murphy, Wyre Council’s Economy Portfolio Holder said: “This permanent CAB office is a great boost to the local residents, giving on-the-spot help and much needed face-to-face advice and no one could doubt how much the people of this area need such a facility. Of course, this is not just for Fleetwood residents but everyone in the borough.’ Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer at the Bureau can call 01772 425912, email volunteer@lw.cabnet.org. uk or call in to the Town Council office at 122, Poulton Road, Fleetwood. Local Volunteer Community Health Champions sought A team of volunteer ‘Community Health Champions’ are being sought by NHS Fylde and Wyre Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).
Continuing from the success of the previous recruitment campaign we are now looking for a second intake of volunteer ‘Community Health Champions’ to work on projects with NHS Fylde and Wyre Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). The CHC’s will act as a direct link between local communities and the CCG, helping to shape future services and improve existing ones. These volunteer roles provide an opportunity for local people to gain new knowledge & skills, but more importantly make a real difference within their community. Community Health Champions have the opportunity to make a substantial impact on the future of health care in Fylde and Wyre. Through sharing their own feedback and the experiences of the wider community, the CHC’s have the opportunity to tell the CCG what is working well and what services need to be improved. 36

Ebony was abandoned at the vets by her previous owner, they left her there to have an operation and never collected her. She is a sweet girl who can sometimes be shy so a quieter home would be better. She is thought to be 3- 5 years old, She is a very pretty cat who likes affection but sometimes just wants to lay in the sun and sleep. She is suitable to live with older children but no other animals. She could possibly live with another cat as long as it is a calm one. Marco was transferred to us from another Centre along with his 2 brothers. He is a young Degu. He is very friendly and likes being handled. He had to have his tail amputated but it doesn’t effect him. He loves his wheel and his treats. It is hoped he would be able to live with other degus but it would need to be another male and they would have to make sure they didn’t fight. Degus are £15.00 each to adopt and like to be active so need big cages. The Amazon Wishlist Christmas Tree Appeal, this year RSPCA are doing something extra special by having a Christmas Tree which has cards attached with wishlist items on. These are items from their Amazon wishlist online. You can choose a card from the tree and on it is the item you may wish to purchase for the Centre. You can then replace the card with a picture of your own pet or in memory of a previous pet if you wish. Shoe box appeal, they are appealing for shoe boxes with lots of cats, small animal toys and treats in. People decorate the shoe boxes for Christmas and fill them with toys and anything they think the animals could use at the Centre. There are drop off points all over Blackpool and at the Animal Centre in Stalmine. If people are wanting to know the drop off points they can then call us 01253 703000 to find out the nearest point to drop off for you. They hope to have the dog kennels ready early next year and still have lots of cats and small animals at the moment looking for homes. Wyre wins technology innovation award Wyre Council has fought off international competition to win Technology Innovator of the Year in the KANA Customer Awards 2014 KANA provides customer service technology which is used by the council to manage contact from residents, recording all phone calls, emails, online forms and face-to-face visits and subsequent actions. A judging panel of industry experts was impressed with the council’s website, which allows residents to report issues such as fly tipping and dog fouling online and plot the location on a map. Officers are then able to pick these reports up on mobile devices in the field and respond immediately, and Wyre is one of only a handful of local authorities in the country that maps them all online, showing where incidents are already being dealt with. The council was also praised for increasing the use of online services, shifting customers from expensive face-to-face and telephone channels. Councillor Peter Gibson, Leader of Wyre Council, said: ‘This award demonstrates that we are continually striving to improve services for residents. There are now more ways than ever to contact Wyre and getting in touch via the
Poulton’s newest gym is open for business The wraps have come off the new state-ofthe-art gym at Poulton health and fitness centre
The gym which opened on 27th October is introducing members to the latest innovations in fitness technology. As part of a major redevelopment, Wyre Council and the YMCA have invested heavily in cardio and resistance equipment that personalise workouts, track results and even integrate with individual programmes away from the gym courtesy of a rather nifty mobile app. The centre boasts 49 fitness stations powered by market leader Life Fitness. Integrated TV and internet features are also built into the kit so people can create bespoke entertainment as they train. And for added motivation, the Synrgy functional training system means they can join in live group workouts with YMCA instructors in the gym. A new purpose built fitness studio has also opened, bringing everything under one roof for the first time and hosting a diverse range of classes from energetic spinning, kettlebells and insanity, to the more relaxing Pilates. This is the first phase of the multi-million pound development that will also see a luxurious but affordable

‘Sponsor A Sleeper To Fleetwood’ appeal Poulton and Wyre Railway Society work to restore railway line The Poulton & Wyre Railway are refurbishing the currently out of use railway line from Thornton to the Wyre Way as a tourist attraction and we need your help. As part of the wider project to reopen the entire line from Poulton to Fleetwood, the PWR intend to operate trains over a short section which we believe will lead to a full reinstatement of the railway to the port.

NPL Estates have also very kindly allowed us to store and carry out work to our locomotive on the Hillhouse site for a number of years for which we are very grateful. We have amassed lots of equipment over the last eight years and are now poised to move from being a static exhibit to an operating railway.
The infrastructure is in good condition requiring minimal work only. Much of this has already been carried out and we anticipate passenger trains running as early as 2016. These services would be limited to a couple of days a week through the tourist season and would be aimed primarily at families, walkers and those that would just like to ride on a train.
Our latest appeal “sponsor a sleeper to Fleetwood” will see the track between Thornton and the Cala Gran caravan park (Fleetwood) brought up to a good condition. Most of the track over this section was re-laid in the 1990s, leaving only three short older sections requiring attention. This was intended to be a member’s only appeal however; people from outside our group are keen to support us (including Link Magazine) and have doubled our first months target in two weeks. The Poulton & Wyre Railway Society was formed in 2006 with the aim to reopen the railway for commuters and tourists. Since then we have been looking at various options with Network Rail, Lancashire County Council and Wyre borough council and while there is a desire to reopen the line as part of the national commuter network, it is just not possible at this point in time. The PWR will not however stand in the way of any national scheme to link Fleetwood to the network if funding became available and in fact will ensure that we hand back a fit for purpose operating railway to Network Rail. Our volunteers are currently refurbishing Thornton and Burn Naze stations to an operational standard, 40

Poulton Le Fylde Railway Station, The Green Team
By Jean Preston The Green Team was founded approximately 13 years ago by an idea I had. I noticed that Poulton Railway Station was looking neglected and unloved and I had a discussion with my colleague, Dana Gledhill to see if we could do something about it. I also approached my neighbour John Pickering, who is a railway enthusiast and he took the helm and organised our adoption of the station in conjunction with Northern Rail. The Green Team was born.

We used to get a bit of funding from Northern Rail, but we now raise funds by having the Charity Shop – which we are running in conjunction with Poulton Gala the first week of November.
Our first sponsors were The Plant Place at Thornton who helped us enormously. We had to transport hundreds of bags of topsoil in wheelbarrows to create the long lawn and The Plant Place matched us bag for bag. We are very proud of our lawn which is maintained by Iain Aires (Big Iain); it is the only lawn of its size we have managed to locate anywhere. The Plant Place also supplied us with plants for the beds and the hanging baskets which were kindly supplied by Glasdon Plastics who also provided us with the seat facing the

We have in the region of 20 members and we meet every second Saturday in the month to tidy up the beds. There’s a summer rota where members water and deadhead the plants on a weekly basis.

For information on Great Eccleston Market call 07590 043238 WYRE ARCHAEOLOGY Wyre Archaeology (WAG) offers a rare opportunity for anyone with an interest in the history of the Fylde Coast and North Preston areas to get hands on experience of practical archaeology through our regular programme of excavations and other activities. Our 2013 BIG DIG found evidence of Iron Age, Roman and Early Mediaeval presence in the Thornton area and we’ll be following up these tantalising leads in future digs. In the 2014 season we also plan to investigate the elusive ‘Danes Pad’ and if you have an idea for a dig just get in touch. WAG is open to people of all ages and has previously provided practical experience for students going on to study for degrees in Archaeology. We’re keen to have new digging members but you’d be welcome whatever skill you might be able to bring at whatever level. We’re fully insured and we provide basic training and equipment. We’re affiliated to the Council for British Archaeology and have strong links with local professionals in the field. We meet at Farmer Parr’s in Thornton on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, starting at 7.00pm, to keep everyone informed of activities and there are occasional guest speakers.
