Spring Cooking
Smoked salmon and watercress frittata
Simple and quick yet filling enough to serve for lunch this frittata is loaded with goodness. If you’re not a fan of fish, replace it with some cooked ham or chicken, or for a vegetarian option, try chickpeas or roasted sweet potato. Serves 4 Preparation Time: 10 minutes Cooking Time: 5-10 minutes You’ll need:
1 tbsp olive oil 6 spring onions, finely sliced 150g watercress 150g hot smoked salmon Zest of half a lemon ¼ tsp dried chilli flakes (optional) Salt and pepper to taste Pinch of ground nutmeg 10 large, free-range eggs 1 tbsp crème fraîche 25g feta cheese, thinly sliced (optional) Method Pre-heat the grill. Warm the olive oil in a non-stick frying pan with an oven-proof handle and sauté the spring onions over a gentle heat for a few minutes until soft. Add the watercress and stir, gently, until the watercress begins to wilt. Remove the skin from the hot smoked salmon, and flake it into pieces into the pan. Add the lemon zest and dried chilli, if using. In a bowl, season the eggs generously with salt, black pepper and a pinch of nutmeg, add the crème fraiche and whisk until combined. Pour into the pan and cook over a gentle heat, 22
moving the mixture around with a spatula every now and then, until the bottom of the frittata is set and the top is still wobbly. Scatter over the feta cheese (if using). Pop the frittata under the grill for another 2-3 minutes, to finish cooking the top. Nutritional Info: Fat: 24.5g Saturated Fat: 6.1g Protein: 26g Fibre: 1g Salt: 1g

Caring for your pet
Embarrassing Doggy Behaviour! PDSA gets to the bottom of your dog’s “bum-scooting” Many dog owners have experienced that moment of embarrassment when, sat in your living room with guests or your in-laws, your dog chooses that moment to ‘scoot’ across the floor dragging his bum along the carpet! Many people believe this behaviour is due to worms, and it certainly can be but it could actually be a different but entirely treatable problem – anal sac disease. A dog has two anal sacs positioned below their tail on either side of their bottom. They release a smelly fluid when the dog goes to the toilet, acting as a scent marker. This distinctive scent marks a dog’s territory and identifies your pet to other dogs. Problems can occur if the sacs don’t empty through the ducts (narrow tubes) properly and become impacted, which can lead to infection. This can cause irritation and pain in the bottom area, and many dogs will sit down and drag their bottom along the ground or lick the area excessively to try and alleviate some of the discomfort. Owners may think this means their dog has worms, and although this can sometimes be the case, blocked anal sacs could also be the culprit. If your dog is showing any of these signs they need to be checked out by your vet. With simple impactions the vet can empty the sacs 38
there and then, which often brings about instant relief. However, if the anal sacs are infected they can be very painful and may need further treatment such as antibiotics or antiinflammatories. Occasionally some dogs require sedation or anaesthetic to have infected sacs emptied. If, however, it turns out that worms are the culprits after all, your vet can recommend the best and most effective treatment for your pet. Some dogs seem to be more prone to problems with their anal sacs than others. Causes can include an incorrect diet that doesn’t contain enough fibre, a problem with the dog’s bowels such as an infection, or obesity. Dogs that repeatedly suffer will need to have their anal sacs emptied on a regular basis. Your veterinary practice can do this, or some dog groomers will include it in their service. Increasing the fibre content of your dog’s diet may help to prevent this condition. Ensuring your dog is a healthy size and weight may also help, and can also reduce the risk of other health issues. Annie Dear Annie, There are several possible causes for this change in Bella’s eating habits – it could be a dental problem or another illness making her feel under the weather. It’s important to take her to see your vet to determine the exact cause of what is making her a bit of a fussy eater right now. If Bella gets a clean bill of health, it could be a behavioural problem which you can get help for. Your vet will be able to advise further if that’s the case. My cat keeps sneezing all the time, sometimes 20 times in a row. It seems to have started after I got her microchipped recently, could this be the cause? Julie Dear Julie, It’s good to hear your cat is now microchipped, however, it’s unlikely to be the cause of her sneezing. It is possible that she has a respiratory infection. Cats with respiratory infections may sneeze and can often (but not always) have other symptoms, such as runny eyes or a runny nose. The sneezing could also be due to a different problem, such as having something stuck in her nose, or something in her environment could be irritating her. With so many possibilities to rule out, it’s best to see your vet, who can examine and treat your cat.
I have a ten-month-old parrot called Charlie who has recently started coughing a lot and has a runny nose and eyes. He’s also had diarrhoea; what could be the problem? Lauren Dear Lauren, these can be symptoms of a range of illnesses, including a condition called psittacosis. This disease is caused by a bacterium called Chlamydophila psittaci and can be passed on to people. You should take Charlie to a vet with experience of treating birds as soon as possible so they can examine him and give him any treatment necessary. My dog Toto has suddenly started snoring so loudly I can hear him from upstairs! Why is this and how can I stop him? Kalvinder Dear kalvinder, as this is a recent development you should get Toto checked by your vet. Certain breeds of dog, such as Pugs and Bulldogs, are more likely to snore because of the shape of their heads. Their flat muzzles often cause breathing difficulties when they are awake, as well as asleep. Alternatively, snoring-type noises can begin if there is an alteration to the air flow through the upper airways, which can happen if there is a problem with a structure called the soft palate or a respiratory infection., As there are several possible causes, a vet will need to examine Toto to determine the reason for his snoring.

Why THE ROYALS are still relevant today By Veronika Jordan
I
n the 1980s when Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer and Prince Andrew married Sarah Ferguson the ‘scandal’ that followed rocked the stability of the Royal Family to the core. But before I get hate mail from the Diana fans out there this is not about either of these ladies personally but about the situation they found themselves in. Diana was obviously a mismatch for Charles but she suited the royal purpose at the time. The days have long gone where a young prince would be married off to a princess from some other European country purely to cement our relationship with someone we were previously at war with. What followed was that both Charles and Andrew were divorced, the exwives had relationships with unsuitable men and Charles admitted to having been in love with the then-married Camilla Parker-Bowles for decades. Of course this kind of thing has always been present but not in the full media spotlight of today. There are still those who feel Charles should not have married Camilla but I am not amongst them. Is it time therefore for the old-fashioned outdated concept of a Royal Family living off the taxes of hard-working people to go. According to certain left-wing newspapers they are ‘reactionary and anti-democratic’ and millions of people in this country find

them ‘illegitimate and offensive’. Republicans claim that those wanting to get rid of the Monarchy are in fact the unheard majority. Wrong! At the last count it had dropped from around 18% to an all-time low of 13% in May 2012 in the run up to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The Pro-Monarchists, if there is such a word, were around 80% of us. I also believe that our beloved Queen provides a safeguard against government instability. Much admired all over the world and bringing in huge revenue from tourism, she is the one thing in our society that never changes. We can trust her totally. She still travels the world and rarely for her own pleasure. She is above politics or partisanship at a time when politicians and political parties are viewed with suspicion. In fact the Royals work hard for this country, paying their taxes, maintaining our heritage and even trying to be more prudent with their expenditure compared to a number of years ago. Unlike the wedding of Princess Margaret to Antony ArmstrongJones in 1960 when monogrammed banners hung along the Mall at enormous public expense, the wedding of Kate and William was far less extravagant, even using the 1902 State Landau carriage to transport the newlyweds from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace. OK so it wasn’t a ‘cheap do’ but it is expected to lift the tourism industry by approximately £4 billion over 10 years and provide a massive boost to the fashion industry as well.

Also think of it another way. Turn back the clock nineteen years and we would have had smarmy old Tony Blair as our ‘head of state’. The mind boggles; such is the stuff of nightmares. Would Japanese and American tourists flock here to see him and Cherie waving from the top of the Houses of Parliament (if that is even physically possible). I don’t think so. And then Gordon Brown or David Cameron? I think I may have to go and lie down in a darkened room. What’s more the head of state could potentially change every five years which makes it even more ridiculous. Anyway, before I get out the sick bag, let’s go back to the Queen. 2016 marks her 90th birthday. While her actual birthday is on 21 April, Her Majesty’s 90th birthday party will take place in the grounds of Windsor Castle each evening from 12-15 May. ‘It will be a celebration of her life, her love of horses, her dedication to the Commonwealth and international affairs and her deep involvement with the Navy, Army and Air Force. Over 90 minutes, 900 horses and more than 1,500 participants from around the United Kingdom and the world will create a joyful event for the Queen. The 90-year journey will take us from the excitement of the birth, through to World War Two, her marriage, the Coronation and a reign of more than 60 years. The celebration will use horses, actors, bands and dancers to tell the story. This is a once in a lifetime event. There will be a member of the Royal Family in attendance every night and the Queen will attend on the final night. The Sunday night show will be broadcast live by ITV.’ I expect it all sold out in minutes. Republicans will moan. George Galloway and Ken Livingstone will moan. Chas and Millie will be waiting in the wings in case their turn has come at last. But the rest of us will get out the bunting and the trestle tables and have a jolly fine street party. Lots of flag waving, commemorative teapots, cucumber sandwiches, cake, Prosecco and Rule Britannia.
