Run Preston, Run Run Preston the popular annual event which has seen 15,000 runners take part over the last 10 years will take place on Sunday 28 September. Anyone who wants to take part in Run Preston this year can do so as the entries are now open. They simply need to go to www.runpreston.com. To secure a place participants must sign up. The event is now being co-ordinated by Fylde Coast Running who aim to build on the event with support from Preston City Council. Director of Fylde Coast Running, Lewis McAndrew said: ‘It is fantastic for us to be coordinating such an established event. We will be trying to improve the event further, one of the improvements we have made already is allowing runners to sign up on the day to participate. We have lots of experience to bring to Run Preston, we have co-ordinated half marathons and marathons in Blackpool and Fleetwood, the Great North West Marathon for the last 25 years and numerous 10k’s over the years. The evenings are getting longer and warmer, and this simple salad is quick to prepare, which means less time in the kitchen and more time in the garden. Pour a glass of red wine, and enjoy!

Serves 4 Level of difficulty: Easy Preparation time: 15 minutes

Rich in vitamins and minerals, this Mediterranean inspired dish makes for a quick and colourful supper. Perfect with warm crusty bread and a glass of wine!

Serves 4 Level of difficulty: Low Preparation time: 60 minutes

 1 cucumber 400g broccoli, cut into small florets 1 head of lettuce (or combine two varieties of lettuce) 1 pepper 8 cherry tomatoes 50g pistachios (or try walnuts, sunflower seeds, pine nuts ...) 100g of Iberico ham  6 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp sherry vinegar 1tsp smooth mustard 1 tsp runny honey 1 clove garlic, crushed Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste  Cut the cucumber into thin slices using a peeler. Line the inside of four presentation rings with the cucumber slices. Place each on a plate and fill the rings with lettuce right up to the brim. Cook the broccoli in boiling water for up to three minutes until just tender Chop the peppers and tomatoes into small pieces and place on top of the lettuce along with the broccoli florets. Sprinkle the pistachios on top and add a few shavings of Iberico ham. Mix together all the ingredients for the vinaigrette and dress the salad. Then very slowly remove the rings to prevent the salad falling apart. 14

 8 red peppers (can also be green or yellow) 8 canned sardines (in oil) Salt and black pepper, to taste For the vinaigrette: 3 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp sherry vinegar 1 small sweet onion, finely diced 1tbsp finely chopped parsley Balsamic glaze to decorate  Place the peppers on a baking tray at roast at 220°C for 2030 minutes or until the skin in black. Cover with a clean wet cloth and allow them cool. Once the peppers are cool peel off the skin and remove seeds. Slice the peppers into strips. whisk the olive oil, vinegar, onion, salt, black pepper and parsley. Slice the sardines in half lengthways and remove bones. To serve: arrange the peppers on a place, top with the sardines and then spoon over the dressing. Decorate the plate with balsamic glaze. For this easy recipe, it is important to use high quality ingredients such as virgin olive oil. For an extra special touch use a balsamic glaze to decorate the plate (available in most supermarkets).

 Makes 6 (¼ pint/140ml puddings)

 100g butter, plus extra for greasing 75g caster sugar 75g brown sugar 50ml vegetable oil 2 eggs 150g selfraising flour, plus extra for dusting ½tsp chopped dried or fresh lavender 200g sweet potatoes, grated  Grease 6 pudding basins with butter then dust with flour, shaking out any excess. Beat together the butter, sugars and oil. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition.

Fold in the flour and lavender. Add the sweet potatoes and combine. Pour the mixture into the prepared pudding basins. Cover each pudding with aluminium foil and cook in a steamer for about 4045 minutes or until cooked (if using a single large basin the cooking time will increase to about 1hour and fifteen minutes). Remove the puddings from the moulds and serve with a dollop of crème fraîche.

Lavender can be replaced with any other spice that you like. These freeze well, and can be warmed up in a microwave. If you do not have a steamer cover the bottom of a deep roasting tray with kitchen paper, place the puddings on the paper and fill the tray with water half way up the pudding moulds. The Great British Outdoor Music Festival....Indoors

Experience the British music festival experience without the threat of rain or trips to the portaloos of doom as The Ferret kicks off it’s annual indoor turfed music festival Glastonferret this month Real grass on the floor of the venue, wristbands, hats, wellies, barbeques, ice creams, hay bales, scrumpy and above all... some amazing bands!!. Once again Glastonferret returns to The Ferret to bring the classic outdoor festival vibe to Preston for those of an agrophobic nature. The event takes place Friday 4th July / Saturday 5th July / Sunday 6th July, once again moving from the old dates taking place the same weekend as Glastonbury in order to avoid treading on the Family Eavis’ collective toes and stealing their crowd.

Rounding off the whole shebang on Sunday 6th July are FOLKS from Manchester. There’s not much space left in classic rock n roll, that heavily populated area once occupied by the Beatles, Stones and all manner of other bands but somehow Folks have carved out a niche all of their own.

Headlining Friday 4th July will be KEYS of Aberystwyth, having risen from the ashes of the much lauded Murry The Hump – once labelled by Alex James of Blur as ‘the best new band in Britain’, counting Damien Hirst and the late Joe Strummer as fans and notching up several John Peel sessions – Keys are a band whose musical pedigree cannot be argued with.

Other acts set to play over the weekend include Go Around Captain, Gideon Conn, Sky Valley Mistress, Three dimensional tanx, Richard Lomax, The Happy Soul, Bird to Beast, Rook and The Ravens, The Jackpot Golden Boys, I Am Your Autopilot, Bill Orrick, The Jackpot Golden Boys, Firstnamefrank and many more.

The Punks Are Coming to Blackpool Rebellion Festival the original Punk and Alternative Festival returns to Blackpool this August. 4 Days, 6 stages, over 200 bands Acoustic Stage, Punk Art, Cinema, Merchandise - join them to celebrate all things Punk Rock..... Rebellion Festival is the largest INDEPENDENT Punk / Alternative music festival in the world. Over 4 days every August in Blackpool, the very best in Punk gather for the social event of the year. Many treat it as a main holiday and come every year so there is a very familiar feel to the weekend and it’s like one big family - all 4000 of them!

All forms of punk are represented with Anarcho bands playing alongside ‘77 Punks groups on the same bill as Oi bands sharing the same stage as UK82 style bands who are appearing with Street Punk outfits next to the new breed of young punk bands coming through etc etc.....! There is also an acoustic stage and an alternative stage BIZARRE BAZAAR which has comedy, burleque dancing and a variety of other entertainment........Oh yeah, and there is PUNK ROCK BINGO! Thursdays final act are the Dickies an American punk rock band formed in San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles in 1977. The band always had a humorous, comical style that has been called “easy listening punk”, “MOR punk,” and also “bubble-gum punk” Friday ends with Stiff Little Fingers a punk rock band from Belfast, Northern Ireland. They formed in 1977, at the height of the Troubles. They split up after six years and four albums, although they reformed five years later, in 1987. Despite major personnel changes, they are still touring and recording as of 2013. On Saturday Killing Joke end the evening, an English post-punk band formed in October 1978 in Notting Hill, London, England. A key 18

influence on industrial rock, their early music was described by critics as “quasi-metal ... dancing to a tune of doom and gloom”, which gradually evolved over the years, incorporating elements of electronic music, synthpop, gothic rock and alternative rock, though always emphasising Coleman’s “savagely strident vocals”. Finding modest commercial success, Killing Joke have influenced many later bands and artists, such as Nirvana, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, and Soundgarden. The weekend ends Sunday with punk legends NOFX a californian punk rock band from Los Angeles, California. NOFX’s mainstream success was signified by a growing interest in punk rock during the 1990s, but unlike many of their contemporaries, they have never been signed to a major label. NOFX has released twelve studio albums, fifteen extended plays and a number of seven-inch singles. Their latest studio album, Self Entitled, was released on September 11, 2012. The group has sold over 6 million records worldwide, making them one of the most successful independent bands of all time. Lancaster Music Festival 2014 Lancaster’s award-winning FREE Music Festival is famous for reflecting the city of Lancaster’s musical abundance, excellence and diversity and is driven by well over 150 acts performing a wide range of genres at over 30 venues within walking distance across the city as well as venues at Lancaster University.

Now in its 6th year, Lancaster Music Festival is being extended by 2 days to take place from 9th to 13th October 2014. The festival will kick off with a launch party on the Thursday evening!

Virtually all the shows are free. The ales are not free but are super. There will be a Festival Ale courtesy of Thwaites Brewery and brand new for this year an special blend of Festival Coffee, courtesy of Atkinsons Coffee Roasters.

Despite efforts in previous years to try to wrap up LMF on Sunday night we have found that it continues into the week, so we now officially give up and accept this city now has its own unofficial Bank Holiday weekend!

We have been operating in Preston for over 20 years (formed in Guild Year 1992) with 5 part time members of staff and volunteers we run a very efficient, low cost, but highly valued service. We help over 400 cases a year - over 800 people including many aged under 25 and dependent children, former homeless, people leaving prison or escaping domestic violence. An annual fun walk from The Beach Cafe in St.Annes proceeding either south to The Windmill on Lytham Green and back to the Beach cafe via Fairhaven lake OR in a north direction to Blackpool Tower and back to the Beach Cafe where refreshments are available. Car parking is also arranged free of charge for participants at the Beach Cafe car park. It is entitled “WHEEL & WALK” and everyone is welcome - any age - either by wheelchair, mobility scooter, walking, jogging etc. the choice is yours! The distance is approx 10km. Come in fancy dress if you like! (prize for the best!!) There is an entrance fee of £5.00 per person which includes a T-shirt and a bottle of water. Every penny raised by donations, sponsorship entrance fees etc. will be spent on helping local people suffering from this crippling neurological condition.
