After last year’s successful event, Preston Guild City Games is back with a bang! The popular event, organised by a number of partners across the city, is set to kick off with a golf competition at Ashton and Lea Golf Club on Friday 6 June. On Saturday 7 June, businesses will battle it out in a number of sports including football, rugby, rounders, netball, and athletics at UCLan Sports Arena. The friendly rivalry between staff at UCLan and Preston City Council is getting more intense by the day. Stephen Daley, captain of Preston City Council football team, gave this advice to UCLan ‘As Preston City Council is the current reigning champion of the City Games 5 a-side tournament, we welcome challenges from any company or organisation that think they have the ability and skill to remove us from the winner’s podium in 2014.’ The Games conclude with the North & Western Lancashire Chamber of Commerce Dragon Boat race at Preston Docks on Sunday 8 June. Ceragem massage beds proven to reduce back pain
Ceragem UK, a family-owned business in Preston, Lancashire, provides a range of massage and heat products that bring relief from a variety of ailments. The initial findings of an independent research study carried out by the University of Central Lancashire demonstrates that after just 3 weeks, the beds (CERAGEM Master V3) show a significant improvement in back pain, discomfort and stiffness. The therapeutic qualities of the massage beds have been examined in clinical trials throughout the research study, showing that they use heat and warmth during massage in order to relieve back pain and increase the client’s well-being. Over three weeks, 32 participants with nonspecific back pain underwent three sessions a week using the CERAGEM Master V3 massage bed. Their reactions were collected with specific emphasis on the location(s) of back pain, severity, activity and lifestyle before and after the intervention period. The results were clear;

The Ceragem centre, which has been open since 2008, offers free and unlimited 40 minute sessions on Master V3 everyone. People travel from all over the UK just to use Ceragem. Geoff, Director of Ceragem, said: “We are a business with a big heart. What we are doing here is changing people’s lives, how do you put a price on that? It’s just an amazing place. We simply want people to incorporate this into their daily routine. You really just have to try it and see the benefits.”
Get Your Kicks At Streetwise Soccer
If you are aged between 11-25 years old and love football, come along to the Streetwise Soccer sessions, offered by Preston City Council. This informal football experience is a weekly programme, running until mid-June, ending with a final tournament on Saturday 21 June. Taking part at venues across the city, the sessions last between 1-2 hours each, with no commitment. All the details can be found on the Streetwise Soccer webpage. The page also includes registration documents, which must be completed and taken to your first session. Head of Sport and Leisure at Preston City Council, Jimmy Khan, encourages all young

people to get into sporting activity. He said ‘The Streetwise Soccer programme is one of a number of initiatives the council provides for young people across the city. We aim to be inclusive and these football sessions provide a fun environment. The evenings are getting longer and warmer, and this simple salad is quick to prepare, which means less time in the kitchen and more time in the garden. Pour a glass of red wine, and enjoy!
Serves 4 Level of difficulty: Easy Preparation time: 15 minutes
Rich in vitamins and minerals, this Mediterranean inspired dish makes for a quick and colourful supper. Perfect with warm crusty bread and a glass of wine!
Serves 4 Level of difficulty: Low Preparation time: 60 minutes
1 cucumber 400g broccoli, cut into small florets 1 head of lettuce (or combine two varieties of lettuce) 1 pepper 8 cherry tomatoes 50g pistachios (or try walnuts, sunflower seeds, pine nuts ...) 100g of Iberico ham 6 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp sherry vinegar 1tsp smooth mustard 1 tsp runny honey 1 clove garlic, crushed Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste Cut the cucumber into thin slices using a peeler. Line the inside of four presentation rings with the cucumber slices. Place each on a plate and fill the rings with lettuce right up to the brim. Cook the broccoli in boiling water for up to three minutes until just tender Chop the peppers and tomatoes into small pieces and place on top of the lettuce along with the broccoli florets. Sprinkle the pistachios on top and add a few shavings of Iberico ham. Mix together all the ingredients for the vinaigrette and dress the salad. Then very slowly remove the rings to prevent the salad falling apart. 18
8 red peppers (can also be green or yellow) 8 canned sardines (in oil) Salt and black pepper, to taste For the vinaigrette: 3 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp sherry vinegar 1 small sweet onion, finely diced 1tbsp finely chopped parsley Balsamic glaze to decorate Place the peppers on a baking tray at roast at 220°C for 2030 minutes or until the skin in black. Cover with a clean wet cloth and allow them cool. Once the peppers are cool peel off the skin and remove seeds. Slice the peppers into strips. whisk the olive oil, vinegar, onion, salt, black pepper and parsley. Slice the sardines in half lengthways and remove bones. To serve: arrange the peppers on a place, top with the sardines and then spoon over the dressing. Decorate the plate with balsamic glaze. For this easy recipe, it is important to use high quality ingredients such as virgin olive oil. For an extra special touch use a balsamic glaze to decorate the plate (available in most supermarkets).

PRESTON FLOWER CLUB meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month (except June, August and December) at St Martin’s Hall, Broadway, Fulwood PR2 9TH, at 2pm. We have been operating in Preston for over 20 years (formed in Guild Year 1992) with 5 part time members of staff and volunteers we run a very efficient, low cost, but highly valued service. We help over 400
cases a year - over 800 people including many aged under 25 and dependent children, former homeless, people leaving prison or escaping domestic violence.
