Shrubs for
Here are a few suggestions for shrubs which do their thing in spring, and which if you plant them now, should give you a great show this year. So here are a handful of my favourites:
Magnolia stellata The star magnolia is a beautiful shrub with white flowers, which, as its name suggests, are arranged like a star. Not only are the flowers very delicate, but they are also sweetly scented, and open from attractive silky buds. It is relatively slow growing, but will eventually reach a height of 3m and a spread of 4m. It has quite a delicate scent and the narrow, deep green leaves that appear after the flowers are very attractive. It prefers an acid soil, but will live in a neutral one if you plant it in a rich loam and dose it annually with Sequestrene.
Daphne x burkwoodii 'Somerset'
Chaenomeles japonica The Japanese quince is often wrongly called simply 'Japonica'. It is a deciduous, thorny shrub grown for its bright red or redorange flowers and round, yellow fruits. The leaves are mid-green and oval in shape. It makes a fantastic wall shrub or hedge, but if left alone to be a freestanding shrub (it will reach 1m tall by 2m wide), it does become very untidy.
Both this species and its close relative, Chaenomeles speciosa (Flowering quince), which is slightly larger and bears clusters of bright red flowers from late winter until early spring, prefer well drained soil in a full sun location.

This semi-evergreen upright shrub is a relative of the native Mezeron (Daphne mezereum) that is flowering right now, but instead of pink flowers it has white flowers that are fringed with pink. These appear in clusters and are so sweetly scented that on a still day one plant can make a whole garden smell wonderful. The leaves are lance shaped, pale to mid green and, given a position in full sun, the shrub will reach 1.5m tall by 1.5m wide. 17

Preston Improving Dementia Awareness
Preston City Council is aiming to raise awareness of dementia by offering free sessions to the public as part of a campaign led by the Alzheimer’s Society. The ‘Dementia Friends’ campaign aims to increase awareness of dementia and change the way people think, talk and act about dementia. It is part of the Prime Minister’s challenge to help create dementia friendly communities. Councillor Matthew Brown, cabinet member for community engagement and inclusion, said: ‘We are committed to ensure that our services become more responsive to the needs of people affected by dementia. We are training our staff to become ‘dementia friends. As part of this approach we are also committed to providing regular events sessions for the community, which are free and open to everyone. Dementia is something that affects one in three people over the age of 65, so everyone should take the opportunity to learn more about it.’ • Sessions are to be held on the CitizenZone vehicle on Thursday 30th January 2014 at Grimsargh Village Hall Car Park, Preston Road, Grimsargh, PR2 5JS.Time: Session 1: 4.00pm to 5.00pm Session 2: 6.00pm to 7.00pm • 12 places are available for each session. Booking is essential. He achieved one of his ultimate ambitions at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games by winning gold in the 4x100m relay and earlier that year he became World Indoor Champion over 60m. Jason is a Youth Sport Trust Ambassador, regularly attending conferences and camps. He plays an active role in National School Sport Week, visiting schools across the UK to inspire children to take part in sport and has also encouraged youngsters up and down the country to join in the School Games. GIFT (Guild Initiative for Furniture Trust) A local charity which collects unwanted furniture and household items from the general public (free of charge) and distributes them to people in need in the Preston area - (people are referred to us by over 20 local organisations including Preston domestic violence, Social services, housing associations, Barnardos) - people who have been allocated accommodation but have no means of furnishing it. We have been operating in Preston for over 20 years (formed in Guild Year 1992) with 5 part time members of staff and volunteers we run a very efficient, low cost, but highly valued service. We help over 400 cases a year - over 800 people including many aged under 25 and dependent children, former homeless, people leaving prison or escaping domestic violence.
