Get your grown-ups
Growing By Hannah Stephenson
G
TV gardening guru David Domoney is calling on all schools to ‘get their grown-ups growing’ as part of a nationwide event organised by the Royal Horticultural Society, to be held across October.
et Your Grown-ups Growing forms part of the RHS’s Campaign for School Gardening, - a national initiative that encourages schools to create gardens, teach the skills of growing and in turn enable their pupils to learn outside the classroom. Each October schools are invited to hold a Grown-ups Growing event so they can involve their local community to help develop the school garden. Grandparents, parents, carers and friends are invited to help. Activities suggested for event organisers include tool swaps, taste tests of produce grown in schools or alternatively locallygrown fruit and veg, a range of gardening classes and even a mini garden show. Schools with gardens can encourage adults within the community to help develop new areas such as a wildlife garden or help construct raised beds. A Get Your Grown-ups Growing event can also see adults passing on their gardening experience to children by helping them sow seeds, plant trees and assist in weeding.
10
For schools without gardens it’s the ideal opportunity to involve adults in the community from the beginning to establish some form of gardening facility in the school. For both types of schools the event can even be used to raise funds through plant sales and raffles. Entering its fifth year, Get Your Grown-ups Growing has developed from a small pilot project based in Yorkshire to a national success. Of the schools that held an event last year, 74% said it had increased their children’s interest in gardening, while more than half reported an increase in adult support and adult interest in gardening. Jacky Chave, RHS strategic schools manager, says: “Having a school garden is a fantastic asset for teachers and pupils as it provides a multitude of learning opportunities, but we know it can take a lot of hard work to maintain. “By involving parents and other local adults, through an event like Get Your Grown-ups Growing, we hope that school gardens will be looked after all year round and enthusiasm for gardening and growing will spread beyond the school gates and into children’s homes.”
The RHS hopes to see 2,000 schools register for this year’s Get Your Grown-ups Growing event. All registered schools will be entered into a free prize draw to win garden tools and materials. Schools which register will receive a free support pack including seeds, event ideas, information templates, stickers and more. Each school can choose any date in October to hold its event and organise activities to suit its requirements.
To register: Schools must sign up to the RHS Campaign for School Gardening via
www.rhs.org.uk/gygg
and click on the ‘Get Your Grown-ups Growing’ button on the home page.

GARDENING
Best of the bunch...
3 ways to...
Delphinium
Be imaginative with climbers...
They are among the most majestic of perennials in the cottage garden, throwing up towering spires in shades of blue, white, cream, lilac and pink varieties in mid-summer. Delphiniums grow best in full sun or where they will receive sun for at least half the day. They like fertile, well-drained soil and won’t survive the winter in waterlogged conditions, so make sure you dig in plenty of garden compost before planting to improve the soil’s ability to hold water without waterlogging. Most delphiniums need staking although some of the Elatum hybrids, such as ‘Mighty Atom’ and ‘Lord Butler’ have spires which will cope well in windy conditions.
Their best companions in a mixed border include dahlias, Japanese anemones and asters, although roses also make a stunning plant partner. Make sure you protect the young plants from slugs in spring. Summer favourites include ‘Faust’, with its strong spikes of deep ultramarine, ‘Loch Leven’, which produces soft mid blue flowers with a white eye, and ‘Cherub’, a dainty pink-mauve variety which grows to between 55-165cm (22-66in) high.

Sweet Potato
Sweet potatoes have become popular in the last decade for their rich, tasty orange flesh which adds colour and texture to many dishes. They are fantastic roasted with other vegetables, or mixed in warming stews when the weather turns cooler. Many mothers boil and puree them when they are weaning their babies because of their high amount of nutrients and sweet flavour. As they are widely grown in tropical countries, they do need a sunny and sheltered spot in rich, sandy soil, dug over with compost and a general fertiliser. They are mainly grown from ‘slips’ in this country and need four
months to mature, so you need to plant tubers in May to enable them to grow to maturity. However, you’ll need to warm your soil first with cloches or black polythene, as the soil needs to be at least 12C (52F) for them to succeed. Plant them 6in (15cm) deep and 12in (30cm) apart with at least two leaf nodes under the soil. Keep them warm by growing them under cloches or through fleece and they’ll need to be well watered regularly. They can then be harvested the same way as potatoes in September.

1
Use an old garden umbrella, stripped of fabric, for a climbing frame, planting deep violet Clematis ‘Jackmanii Superba’ at its base.
2
Erect tall poles every six feet (1.8m) or so along the garden fence, attaching thick rope between them to form elegant sways. Plant rambling roses, Jasminum officinale, honeysuckle and Clematis montana at the base of poles, guiding them up and along the swags to create swathes of colour.
3
Use climbers to scramble over uninteresting shrubs in the border - clematis will happily climb conifers and other evergreens, creating colour. Use lateflowering viticellas with spring-flowering shrubs and early-flowering alpinas and macropetalas with later-flowering ones. Sweet peas can also be used for scrambling over shrubs.

Aries
(Mar 21st - Apr 20th) Believe it or not you’re going to be most ardent about your working life this month, and getting the job done. Have you been thinking about getting fit? This doesn’t have to drab or dreary, because Uranus in your sign compels you to be inventive and inspired, and so if anyone can make salads look exciting, it’s you.
Taurus
(Apr 21st - May 21st) You’re about as far removed from the steady-eddie textbook Taurus as you can get this month. The sun is in the most playful part of the chart you see, and so as far as you’re concerned, responsibility is a tragedy. Of course you can’t quit the rat race completely, but what you could do is channel this energy into reconnecting with loved ones, and indulge your fun, carefree side.
Gemini
(May 22nd - Jun 21st) Home comforts are a lot more important to you this month, as is driving in the slow lane for a while, so that you can stop and smell the roses. This helps you regroup by catching up on sleep if you’ve been rather frazzled, and strengthen family ties. This is also a nostalgic time for you Gemini, not something we readily associate with your sign, so any such bouts might very well catch you on the hop.
Cancer
(Jun 22nd - Jul 23rd) The Virgo sun re-awakens your interest in all activity that is close to home. Perhaps you chose to overlook some of this because it was either a hot potato or too finicky. What were hot topics have now cooled down enough for you to handle, and with this comes a responsibility that you don’t seem all that bothered about shouldering. This fixer mentality of yours is very attractive to others.
12
Leo
(Jul 24th - Aug 23rd) Money holds more allure for you now, and it’s not just cold, hard cash, but the wider benefits that it can bring you, like comfort and security. Two major Leo considerations. Whether you’re a tomcat on the prowl or simply living it up with your lover or friends, the flipside of this coin involves you pushing the boat out as far as you can. But will finance stretch as far for you?
Virgo
(Aug 24th - Sep 23rd) Stand by for action as they say, and welcome to your strongest month, as you harness the power of the sun in your sign. You’re like a walking, talking solar panel absorbing all the sun’s positive rays and reflecting back this light on all the people you come into contact with. Someone intrigues you, and if they’re your opposite in many ways, perhaps he or she is in your life for a reason.
Libra
(Sep 24th - Oct 23rd) You’ve got to be 100 per cent comfortable with the company you keep this month, so you’ll naturally attract like-minded people into your life. Quiet time at home is also important, but you won’t be able to avoid the pull of the social scene completely, mainly because it won’t be long before the hole left by your absence becomes so big that others start falling into it. Love enters your life with a whisper.
Scorpio
(Oct 24th - Nov 22nd) Applying undue pressure isn’t really ever the trick with you, yet someone just doesn’t appear to be able to comprehend this as the month begins. You’re generally looking for more evolved company, and the type of people who can be easy-going and stimulating at the same time. If you’ve been harbouring a secret ambition, you could possibly move it closer towards materialising before the month is out.
Sagittarius
(Nov 23rd - Dec 21st) You’re the top of the heap this month, the Big Cheese. This is because the sun is beaming down its most powerful rays on you before the rest of the zodiac, and this kind of elevated status gives you a head start on the rest of us. Use this power wisely, because you have tremendous influential sway right now, and you’re also transmitting all the right signals for a potential new love interest.
Capricorn
(Dec 22nd - Jan 20th) Wouldn’t you just love to feel the sun on your back and the sand between your toes? The cosmos allows you plenty of right to roam this month so making travel arrangements looks likely. If you don’t arrange something, the likelihood is that somebody else will. Do you have an up-to-date passport? This is also the time when you’re seen as wise, so expect more bending of your ear than normal.
Aquarius
(Jan 21st - Feb 19th) Extra resilience will be called for should you get any form of knockback or rejection this month, because you’re feeling a lot more sensitive all in all. In fact, and if you listen very carefully, you can hear the sound of eggshells crunching beneath the feet of your loved ones as they pick up on this. The great opportunity this presents for you is the ability to get closer to someone, and not to spread yourself too thinly, as true contentment lies in one soul-union.
Pisces
(Feb 20th - Mar 20th) The sun in your opposite sign reflects well on you, and opens up new perspectives in your life. This helps you to walk a mile or two in somebody else’s shoes, and this is fantastic for reinventing a relationship. If you’re looking for love, then you will attract what you are projecting, so positive thoughts all the way please Pisces. Apply this rule and you’ll land yourself a real catch!

Responding to the record breaking attendance figures of the 2013 Lancaster Music Festival this year’s festival is promoting its own special “Unofficial Bank Holiday” with the mantra “Take Monday Off” to accommodate the nearly 200 acts covering numerous genres performing at over 40 city centre and University venues on the long weekend of Oct. 9-13th, 2014. Lancaster Music Festival has decided to create their own unofficial Bank Holiday. When asked for the thinking behind this idea, festival coordinator Ben Ruth responded ‘people kept asking us why we didn’t put the music festival on a Bank Holiday weekend so we could fit more shows in. Well, last year we warned all those involved in the festival production to take Monday off anyway only to realise a lot of festival goers did the same. That led to the realisation that we could create our own long weekend in Lancaster simply by announcing it. So that’s what we’re doing. Only we’ve thrown in Thursday as well.’ Almost all of the shows are free and all the city venues are within easy walking distance of each other while a regular bus service connects with Lancaster University. It will be a long and packed weekend of around 200 top notch local and global musical talent at over 40 locations with new acts arriving and proven favourites returning to a city which has always welcomed and nurtured live music. Based on the festival successes of the last five years this will be Lancaster’s sixth and biggest music festival so far with new venues including the city’s iconic 1000 year old Castle, the town’s historic squares, late closing bars and clubs and greater involvement of Lancaster University (and a bank that will in fact be open). From folk, jazz, blues, soul, funk, grunge, punk, pop to classical, avant garde and even bicycle powered music on the back of a beer dray we expect everyone to find outstanding music that they will enjoy in a lively and festive atmosphere. Most of the music will be provided by the outstanding talent and variety of acts that perform in the Lancaster district, for example, Get Carter Experience with Madness ex-keyboardist

The festival will also host street theatre, mini ale festivals and plenty of food both in the venues and the market stalls. The event is family friendly during the day and evening with adults being able to enjoy live music through the wee hours with at least one venue open 24 hours and another two licensed to 4am. A few of the events are ticketed and tickets can be obtained after August 31st online from the festival website (www.lancastermusicfestival. com/tickets.php), at Lancaster’s Visitor Information Centre and the venues themselves. The 64 page festival brochures will be produced by @Lancaster Magazine and are available from September 15th for £1 from participating venues and the Lancaster and Morecambe Visitor Information Centres. Preston’s Parks Named Some Of The Best In Britain Keep Britain Tidy announces a record-breaking number of award-winning parks and green spaces for 2014.
Halsam Park Sensory Garden
Six of Preston’s parks, open spaces and nature reserves are some of the very best in the UK – and that’s official! They are among a recordbreaking 1,476 parks and green spaces that will today receive a prestigious Green Flag Award. The awards, handed out by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities. Ashton Park is the most recent winner, awarded their first Green Flag in 2011/12. It’s added to the list of other quality green spaces across Preston:- Avenham Park, Miller Park, Grange Park, Haslam Park and Fishwick local nature reserve at Fishwick Bottoms The Friends of Haslam Park group also received a Green Flag Community Award for their volunteer management of the Sensory Garden and local nature reserve.

Cabinet member for community and environment, Councillor Robert Boswell, said: ‘We are absolutely delighted to receive these Green Flag Awards for Preston’s parks and green spaces from Keep Britain Tidy. They highlight that people in Preston are benefitting from green spaces of the very highest quality. Preston has six parks and open spaces that meet the Green Flag award standard, and is recognition to all the hard work and commitment, not only from council staff, but also volunteers and Friends Groups who help maintain them for our enjoyment.’ Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award scheme manager, Paul Todd, added ‘We are delighted to announce yet another record-breaking year for Green Flag Award parks and green spaces. A Green Flag Award provides national recognition for all the parks managers, staff and volunteers who, through their dedication and hard work, have helped to create these fantastic places for everyone to enjoy. Quality green spaces are a vital resource for communities and that is why it is so significant that we have given out more awards than ever before.’

The isolation unit plays a very crucial part at the animal centre as it keeps new arrivals away from all the current healthy animals that are up for homing. This is in case of any infection which might be brought in by a new arrival and then spread on to healthy animals. People are welcome to contact them to take part or to sponsor one of the staff taking part. For all information email: enquiries@rspcablackpool.org. uk or visit www.rspcablackpool.org.uk
