Our Cat is the top Dog Photographer Local dog Photographers scoop Kennel Club’s top prize Cat Race of Cat’s Dog Photography said: ‘Driving to a shoot, I received a phone call to say that I’d won the puppy’s category in The Kennel Club’s Dog Photographer of the Year & I literally squealed with excitement. It is an international competition & received almost 13,000 entries over 7 categories - a record for the company. I have entered every category of the competition for the last two years because entering just seemed acutely appropriate. It involves my two key passions, which also happen to be the core elements of my business - Cat’s Dog Photography. During my previous job as a family portraiture photographer, I found myself enjoying dog photo sessions significantly more than other shoots. There seemed to be an innate connection between the dogs & me, which allows me to capture each dog’s personality. This realisation inspired me to start Cats Dog Photography. The winning photograph was taken during a Cat’s Dog Photography shoot, however the Great Dane puppy Tinkerbell was not my intended subject & just happened to be in the location at the time. I knew as soon as I saw the puppy that I had to photograph her & as my previous clients shoot was coming to an end, I seized the opportunity. When the shot was taken, Tinkerbell had just begun to playfully stalk my Chihuahua Poppy, who accompanies some of our photographers while they are shooting. Cats Dog Photography strives to capture the Individual character behind each dog & the unplanned circumstances behind this shot help to depict that particularly well.

It’s an honour to be recognized by a reputable organization such as The Kennel Club. The prestige of this award has furthered the drive I have for dog photography whilst motivating me to continuously improve in my work. I can’t wait to collect my award in March at Crufts.’ www.catsdogphotography.co.uk www.facebook.com/catsdogphotography

Preston Markets Refurbishment – Phase 1 Preston City Council plan to refurbish the Fish Market (the smaller market canopy) as phase 1 of the market project. The Covered Market (the larger 1875 canopy) will be refurbished as part of phase 2 which will also include the new markets facilities. We expect the Fish Market to be used more intensively whilst work is carried out on the Covered Market to ensure this fantastic listed structure remains fit for purpose long into the future. A provisional timetable indicates works will start in early autumn 2015 with the Fish Market being

closed until later in the year, but all timescales at this stage are approximate. The Council’s Cabinet were set to consider and make a decision on the Fish Market works on 11 March, and if approved will enable an early start on the wider markets project. Cabinet Member for Community and Environment, Councillor Robert Boswell said; ‘We will carefully consider this report in the light of the recommendations that an early start on phase 1 of the project is the best way forward at this time.’

Win tickets to see UB40 announce further UK tour dates for 2015 due to massive demand

Following their sold-out UK tour of 2014, reggae stars UB40 have announced nineteen further dates in May and June. The Brummie legends recently completed the second leg of their ‘Getting Over The Storm’ tour, which has seen UK’s most successful reggae band play over forty UK shows to over 100,000 fans. UB40’s 2015 UK tour dates, which start at Motherwell Concert Hall on Monday 4th and end at Doncaster Racecourse on Saturday 6th June, continues the band’s preference to avoid arena venues in the UK, as founding member and principal songwriter Brian Travers explains: ‘The success of this years tour has confirmed what we already knew, that it’s better to play to 100,000 people across forty intimate venues across the whole of the country rather than playing to the same number of people at six enormous domes in the same cities. It’s a much better experience for both the band and our fans, and we get to play in towns and cities we haven’t visited for many years.’ Fellow UB40 founding member and principal songwriter Jimmy Brown agrees: ‘The atmosphere in the venues on our current tour has been amazing. You can feel it from the stage and it lifts the band to a different level. You rarely get that in an arena. We’re never happier than when we are on stage; we are a working band, it’s what we do.’ The success of the tour is bound to rankle with UB40’s former lead singer Ali Campbell, who has repeatedly attempted to discredit his former bandmates since he walked out on them in 2008. UB40 founding member Robin Campbell said: ‘Ali has been shamelessly attempting to pass himself off as a “reformed UB40” since the start of 2014, which has confused many of our fans, the media and concert promoters all over the world. We’ve had to issue writs against Ali and two other former members. If they want to be UB40 so badly they should never have chosen to leave UB40 in the first place.’

To be in with a chance of winning 2 fantastic tickets, simply answer this question correctly: Where does the band name UB40 come from? Answer

UB40 formed in 1978, before releasing their debut album ‘Signing Off’ in August 1980, considered by many to be one of the greatest reggae albums ever released by a British band. It was the start of a career that has since seen the band have over forty UK Top 40 hit singles and achieve sales of over 100 million records, making UB40 one of the most successful British groups of all time. The band’s latest Top 30 album ‘Getting Over The Storm’ was awarded BBC Radio 2’s ‘Album Of The Week’ accolade and received 5-star reviews from the UK’s music press on its release in September 2013.

Land Swap For Afforable Housing And Community Boost Up to 28 new affordable homes are set to be built in Preston and a valuable community space is to be preserved for future generations, thanks to an innovative partnership between Preston City Council and the Community Gateway Association In an important deal for the city, the Council is swapping six acres of land at St. Paul’s Road, Deepdale for Community Gateway owned land at Truro Place, Fishwick, Preston.

know that Preston has a shortage of affordable homes. So St Paul’s Road, a former council depot site, will see the development of a number of mixed tenure properties - some will be for rent, some for shared ownership and some for outright sale. These will provide much needed affordable homes on a site which will The land at Truro Place is a valued lead to a complete regeneration of the community space, which the Friends area. Background info - Truro Place Welcoming this innovative partnership, Councillor Martyn Rawlinson said: ‘This is a brilliant deal for the City. Preston gets 28 new affordable homes whilst at the same time an important community area is saved for future generations to enjoy. This is what working in partnership is all about - listening to the needs of the local community and acting on them. People need affordable housing. It’s a key issue for Preston so we are delighted to help bring forward this development at St. Paul’s Road. It has been a long term ambition of the council to do this and it’s great to see the very first step is now being taken. In turn, people in Fishwick and St. Matthews will be delighted at the prospect of saving Truro Place. Everybody wins!’ Community Gateway Association Chief Executive, Diane Bellinger, added: ‘We

Community Gateway Association (CGA) owned the land at Truro Place and had originally planned to build new homes on the site. The local community expressed an interest in using the site as community land, and were applying for lottery funding to help them do so. CGA are always keen to support community groups where possible so entered into discussions about transferring the land to Preston City Council so that it could be used by the local community. Truro Place will now be given over to the council for use as a community space, and instead CGA will be building brand new homes in St Paul’s Road, as part of a land swap arrangement. CGA’s Community Empowerment team will continue to support the Friends of Fishwick and St Matthews community group.
