March Magazine Deadline 12th February 2015

Time for a Fresh Start in 2015, so let me first wish you a Happy New Year – and may it be a great one! We hope it brings success and happiness, and that you carry the experience of the past into a brighter future. We’ve had a great start to the year with our biggest month in business, which means we are helping more businesses than ever before in providing a cost effective solution to reaching the local market. By dedicating our magazines to specific areas we can support local shopping more than any other local media. Two new magazines are soon to be launched, both at 20,000 copies per month: One will be in the Ribble Valley, covering east Preston through to Clitheroe, while we are also producing a new Chorley edition for this growth area, expanding into the surrounding villages. Recent Testimonial just in: “The Link Magazine has continued to be a reliable and solid advertising source whilst providing both good quality print and cost effectiveness on distribution. At one point we had to stop advertising as we were inundated with work! Customer service and the whole process of booking advertising is smooth and flawless.” – LazyLawn Lancashire. Well done to last month’s winner: Joan Andrews for the Where Am I? Competition. £50 is on its way. Once again, have a Great New Year!

GARDENING

Best of the bunch...

3 ways to...

Gaultheria

Use pots in contemporary design

(Winter green)

You may see a lot of these small shrubs in garden centres bearing their colourful red or purple berries at the moment, and they can be easily grown in pots of ericaceous compost or in a garden with lime-free soil in partial shade. Gaultheria is most commonly seen as ground cover under rhododendrons or camellias, but if you want a taller variety you can choose G shallon, which grows to 1.5m, producing dark purple berries. Others, such as G mucronata, are more suitable to add low-growing interest to containers or borders, with their large porcelain-like berries in shades of dark pink, red and white appearing in November.

1

If you want the pot to make an impact, select the pot for its architectural shape rather than plant-holding abilities. Sometimes the pot will provide more of a wow factor without a plant in it.

Male and female flowers are nearly always borne by different varieties, so you need to plant more than one type to be sure you will have berries. Female varieties include ‘Cherry Ripe’ and ‘Lilian’, while male types include ‘Thymifolia’ or ‘Male’.

Good enough to eat...

Horseradish

10

If you’ve loved horseradish with your roast beef this winter, why not try growing your own for an eye-poppingly hot accompaniment?

Buy plants from specialist herb nurseries, or some seed companies offer roots in their autumn catalogues for planting up in late winter or early spring.

Be warned, though, it’s an invasive perennial with deep roots that regrow when they’re broken off and, once established, can be as difficult to get rid of as ground elder.

Make a hole in the soil with a dibber and push a single root into it, thickest end uppermost, leaving the tip at ground level.

Grow it in a bottomless bucket sunk into the ground with its rim about an inch above the surface so that the roots don’t spread up there and to keep clumps in check. Only the root of horseradish (Armoracia rusticana) is used.

Plant three roots about 60cm apart for a good clump. Let the plants grow for two years before harvesting. Dig up one plant in September or October, using the biggest roots for the kitchen and cutting off one of the thinner roots to replant.

2

Buy identical pots for a strong statement - a row of three tall containers, for instance, will look more impressive than a group of pots of different shapes, sizes and colours.

3

If you want a burst of colour in a space, consider using a pot rather than a plant for that purpose.

Things to do this month… n Make sure that tender and half-hardy fuchsias, remaining dormant in their pots, do not become completely dry. Spray any early growth with tepid water in the light to soften the wood, but do this sparingly. n When watering plants (sparingly) in the greenhouse, water them as early in the day as possible, so that surfaces are dry before nightfall. n Order new summerflowering bulbs and tubers from a reputable supplier. Store them in shallow boxes or trays and keep in a dry, frostfree place until ready to plant.

ROLL WITH THE WEATHER, SAYS DIARMUID

Diarmuid offers the following design tips to gardeners who want their garden to look good, whatever the weather:

ou would have thought that when he moved to a new house in Wicklow, known as the Garden of Ireland, Diarmuid Gavin, the enfant terrible of the gardening fraternity, would have wasted no time hauling in the diggers, landscaping materials, amazing plants and architectural altars. Think again. The TV gardening maverick admits that it’s easy to talk about garden design, to lecture on it and write books about it, but he developed a fear of it when it came to his own plot. “I bought a new home, a show house, with a perfectly simple garden - wooden fences, sloped lawn, some scalloped shaped allowing for outdoor living on two beds to the sides and that was levels. Freshly planted wisterias it. But for the life of me, I couldn’t are beginning to climb towards the decide on a good design which sky, wrapped around reclaimed would satisfy the family,” he says. cast iron pillars. The foundation is “I made the terrible mistake of in for a small summer house. ripping out everything that was “I shifted five tonnes of sieved here in the misguided belief that a topsoil in readiness for new raised clean sweep would provide some vegetable beds. Their garden very difficult because of the state enjoys a sunny aspect but, like the of the garden. rest of the country, there is plenty “The ignominy! So, something of rain. n Keep the overall design simple. When you’re making a plan, use a few sweeping lines to lead the eye from the viewing point, which is often the kitchen window, right down to the back of your plot.

Y

n Turn your lawn into a welcoming green wide pathway, which almost acts as an arrow, drawing the eye or the visitor on a journey. n Keep the planting simple. Mass plant low-growing shrubs such as dwarf purple berberis for colour or clouds of Pittosporum tobira ‘Nanum’. n If your garden is extremely small, shaded or just damp, give up on a lawn altogether. It’s not going to repay any maintenance and you will spend years and fortunes bemoaning the brown patches and invasion of weeds and moss. Dig it up and replace it with a top quality artificial turf. This can be wonderful, a green carpet which always looks good, can be easily cleaned, allows rainwater and snow to drain away and doesn’t need cutting or feeding. For a top-of-the-range brand, try Easigrass. n Consider what your specimens will look like all year round, not only when covered in foliage or flower. If you’re planting a tree, why not try a multi-stemmed birch? When bare from October to April it still has a lovely sculptural shape. Enhance this through the evening by uplighting through the use of a spotlight at its base. n Pay attention to a few detailed areas. Surprise and delight by framing your front door with a wonderful display of massed colour in pots. For instance, a mass of flowering cyclamen crammed into a ‘long Tom’ terracotta urn looks special and draws attention from less well tended parts of the garden. 11

Greater freedom? More choice? Or Pension time bomb? Auto-enrolment is here.

Millions of workers are currently being automatically enrolled into a workplace pension by their employer and once enrolled not only will they pay into it but so will their employer and the government.

With all the pension reforms announced recently and with the government’s Auto-enrolment scheme in full flow, there is a lot of talk about how people like you are going to be affected when they finally stop working.

Depending on suitability and subject to qualifying Basic state pension Your own pension pension arranged rules, employers can either use their ownAthrough Pension arrangements Appletree scheme, a new Pension scheme to comply with these new laws, or rely on a government scheme - the National Employment Savings Trust (NEST) scheme.

The government estimates about 7 million people are not saving at all for retirement, or simply not saving enough. On top of that, life expectancy is increasing – people will live longer in retirement and the size of their pension fund needs to be greater to fund this.

David Gallagher, Managing Director of Appletree Financial Solutions added, “As local specialists, we speak to people and small businesses every day who find the subject of pensions either too complicated or just plain boring. But without professional financial advice and good planning, business owners could find themselves facing hefty fines from the Pensions Regulator.” It has been called the most radical pension reform in almost a century.

For these reasons, the government may not be able to afford to keep state pensions at their current level in the longer term. Therefore, new legal duties will require employers to ‘automatically enrol’ their eligible jobholders into a qualifying pension scheme and pay contributions towards it. This new workplace pension reform will be ‘staged’ over a six year period depending on the size of the employer. SEE BACK PAGE ADVERT

Festival Fever will grip Prestons Moor Park in Summer

It is with great pleasure that we announce that UK Tribute Festivals, the team responsible for Festwich, an annual festival on St Mary’s Park in Prestwich, have decided that it is time to take the festival further afield. The team intend to host it at Moor Park, in Preston during summer 2015 Festival curator Jools Taylor said; ‘We have been in close discussions and planning with Preston Council for nearly a year and we are extremely excited to be bringing a new Festival to Preston in summer 2015 titled “Rockprest”. Our festivals are unique as they are free to attend, the ticket is free and all the attendees are asked to pay is the actual booking fee through the ticket outlets, which is never more than £2.50. “Rockprest” will be aimed at all ages and there will be something for everybody including two stages of music, thrill rides, kid’s rides, market area plus food and beer tents that cater for all tastes.’ Festwich has seen some of the best in tributes from around the UK and Europe including tributes to Arctic Monkeys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Muse, Metallica and many more. For the Preston event the organisers are promising to deliver two full days, with over 30 acts of some of the greatest tribute acts, as well as up and coming talent. Tim Ross festival director said; ‘Moor Park Preston is an ideal site to host Rockprest as logistically it’s easily accessible, also the interest and requests to bring what 14

we do at Festwich to Preston has been unbelievable.’ Executive member of culture and leisure services, Councillor Veronica Afrin has said, ‘We are excited to welcome this new venture to Preston. “Rockprest” sounds like it will be a great experience for Prestonians of all ages and we’re pleased that UK Tribute Festivals chose us to be their next venue.’ The actual date and line up for Rockprest should be announced around now, with tickets being released early in the new year. Having seen how quickly Festwich tickets go, the organisers predict that Rockprest tickets won’t be around for long. To keep up to speed with festival developments and announcements you can visit the organiser’s facebook page www. facebook.com/rockprest and website www. rockprest.co.uk.

Local people are being offered free training in useful career skills and the opportunity to give something back to their community at the same in an initiative launched by Citizens Advice aimed at attracting more volunteers.

Diane Gradwell, Lancashire West Chief Executive, said: ‘This will be a fantastic opportunity for anyone looking to gain new skills at the same time as making a valuable contribution to the community. Whether they are unemployed, in further education, planning to return to work or simply looking for a better job, volunteering with the CAB can be a useful career step as well as immensely rewarding in itself. All we ask is that they have some basic IT skills and preferably see the course through to the end. Very many of our volunteers have gone on to find good career work through their experience with CAB and there’s no reason why anyone else should not do the same.’

New bespoke training courses created by Lancashire West CAB could be the first step on the ladder for people to work in many new careers as well as preparing them to help others with the many issues they face in life, says the organisation. Volunteers will undergo a series of tutorial sessions with licensed CAB trainers plus six months of practical experience working a day a week in one of the Bureau’s local centres. They can train in a number of skills including reception, telephone skills, client assessment and advice. CAB training for Generalist Advisers is equal to a Level 3 qualification in Providing Initial Legal Information and Advice.

Digital Launchpad For Preston - The Guild City On Lancashire Day, Preston took a leap forward into the digital age with a brand new showcase website for the city - www.prestonguildcity.co.uk The website’s clean and simple design features five main categories: Invest; Live & Work; Study; Visit; and What’s On. For the first time all information about Preston is located in one place. The ‘What’s On’ section gives organisations the ability to upload their own events to the calendar and is envisaged will become the main events calendar for the city. The ‘Invest’ sector provides businesses and investors with information on key project areas and opportunities within the city. The ‘Visit’ section highlights attractions and activities - both indoors and outdoors, in and around the city centre. Welcoming the launch of the new website for Preston, Councillor Peter Rankin - Leader of Preston City Council, said: ‘Preston is one of England’s brightest development hotspots and the city has huge potential. This new Guild City website is a great way to showcase everything Preston has to offer – especially to businesses and potential investors. Once again, Professor Ben Casey has given his time for free to work on this project and we are very grateful to him for all his help and expertise. It’s a true partnership with UCLan, Preston BID and the Council all working together for the benefit of Preston.’ Professor Ben Casey added: ‘Preston is a proud city with a great story to tell. We have something for everyone from wonderful people to a fantastic location; from a top class University to a thriving business sector. In the modern, digital world you have to have strong presence online, otherwise you are simply irrelevant. It’s about positioning Preston as a city that is ripe for investment, but also one that has a unique identity with a rich heritage and culture. By designing a strong

16

brand and digital showcase for Preston, we can reach out to potential new businesses, investors, residents, visitors and students to the city. It is a tremendous honour to do this work for my home city and I am thrilled that my ideas have been taken on board so enthusiastically.’ Mark Whittle from Preston Business Improvement District said: ‘Preston is a great place to do business. Preston Sports Awards Hits 10 The Walker Smith Way Preston Sports Awards, in association with Preston Guild Hall Ltd, will recognise 17 winners for their commitment, dedication and sporting achievement in the city. The 10th ceremony is an annual sell-out to award sponsors and short-listed nominees, along with their friends and family who are eagerly awaiting the outcome. Among the successes at the 2014 awards, Preston Grasshoppers won Community Organisation of the Year after a very successful 12 months. The club’s achievements included the development of their new Touch rugby initiative to encourage wider participation. The club provided free summer sessions on Moor Park, which attracted around 60 participants each week. Chair of Preston Sports Forum, Peter Mason, said: ‘The Forum would like to thank the main sponsor Walker Smith Way Legal, Preston Guild Hall Ltd and the seventeen individual award sponsors in making the event the success it is to date. Without their continued support, the volunteers and the clubs in which they serve would not be recognised for their fantastic contribution to community sports provision in Preston. The organisation of the awards is an excellent example of partnership working between public, private and third sectors all coming together for the greater good of sports in the local area.’ Councillor Veronica Afrin, Cabinet member for leisure and culture, added: ‘I always look forward to the Preston Sports Awards in my calendar. It’s such a wonderful event for the city and for those who are nominated. Please take the time to think of a club or an individual who represents the ethos of a hardworking and committed volunteer, and complete your nomination form.’ Nominations are now open and can be accessed via the website www.preston.gov. uk/sportsawards or alternatively, printed copies can be found at your local leisure centres. Preston Sports Awards 2015 takes place on Friday 13 March For information and tickets for the awards, please call Preston Council’s Sport and Health Development team on 01772 906182, or e-mail go2sportandhealth@preston.gov.uk

Freestyle For Moor Park Skate Park One of the UK’s leading skate park construction companies, Freestyle, has been awarded the contract to build a regional skate park as part of the Moor Park restoration. The £320,000 skate park project is part of a £2.2million scheme to improve Moor Park, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, The Big Lottery, Preston City Council, Lancashire County Council and the University of Central Lancashire. The skate park is a great opportunity for young people to be active and healthy. It has been developed in partnership with Preston Skatepark Projects, a community group representing the skaters of Preston. Cabinet member for community and environment, Councillor Robert Boswell, said: ‘Building the skate park is only the start of the major restoration work to be carried out at Moor Park. The skate park will be centrally located in the park with good public transport links and car parking, providing an attraction for young people and their families from across Lancashire and the North West.’ He continued: ‘The iconic facility will benefit tens of thousands of children, young people and adults of all abilities and ethnic 18

diversities, and provides another visitor attraction to enhance Preston’s offer.’ Bob Frost from Preston Skatepark Projects, added: ‘The skate park has been a 12 year campaign and we, as a user group, are thrilled that our vision will finally be realised. Skateboarding offers those kids that don’t want to play team sports an alternative active lifestyle, when they want to do it, and on their own terms.’ • The skate park construction will be completed before the end of July 2015. • There will be a programme of events and activities linked to the skate park including: taster sessions; skateboard tuition; and demonstrations. • It also offers diversionary activities, helping to reduce crime, vandalism and antisocial behaviour. • More information about the company, Freestyle, can be found on their website http://freestyleskateparks.com/ They are the UK’s oldest and largest skate park design and build company.

Guild Mayor and Stewards – (left-right) Cllr Ken Hudson; Cllr Bill Shannon; Guild Mayor Cllr Carl Crompton; Cllr Jonathan Saksena

The 2012 Illuminated Guild Book Reaches Completion Preston is the only place in Britain which still celebrates a Guild – every 20 years. In 2013 illustrator and calligrapher Robin Utracik of Northern Studios was commissioned to produce the 27th Guild Book as a record of the 2012 Guild Court. Preston is the only place in Britain which still celebrates a Guild – every 20 years. In 2013 illustrator and calligrapher Robin Utracik of Northern Studios was commissioned to produce the 27th Guild Book as a record of the 2012 Guild Court. The ancient right and tradition of holding a Guild was first granted to Preston in its first Royal charter in 1179. The medieval Guild focused around the burgesses or freemen of Preston who had the right to trade in the town. Burgesses were required to attend a Guild Court to ensure their membership and rights were passed down from father to son. Guild Courts were held from the 1300s and the first surviving list of the members of the Guild was made in 1397. These initially took the form of rolls but over time developed into bound books – each reflecting the time they were made. The 2012 book follows the traditional format of the previous books, but takes its inspiration from the 1952 Guild Book and the 2012 Preston Guild. Alongside the lists of councillors and burgesses are illustrations of Preston landmarks, Guild events and a watercolour portrait of the 2012 Guild Mayor, Councillor Carl Crompton.

Current Mayor of Preston, Councillor Nick Pomfret, said: ‘Many of the previous Guild Books are beautiful works of art in their own right, and this record of the 2012 Guild is no exception. Robin has done a fantastic job and I’m sure this will bring back many wonderful memories of what was a brilliant occasion in Preston’s recent history.’ • The 2012 Guild Book will be displayed in the Harris Museum & Art Gallery before taking its place with the 26 other Guild Books stored in Lancashire Archives. • The 2012 Guild Book will be signed by the Guild Mayor, Councillor Carl Crompton, before full Council on Thursday 11 December at 1pm at Preston Town Hall. • The book will also be signed by the 2012 Clerk of the Guild, Lorraine Norris, Chief Executive at Preston City Council. • Illustrator and calligrapher, Robin Utracik, hails from Preston and studied art in and around Lancashire before setting up in business over 30 years ago. • Robin was commission by Lancashire County Council to produce an illuminated address for Her Majesty The Queen commemorating the Diamond Jubilee. He also is a Trustee of the Preston Pals War Memorial Trust and designed the Memorial which is now on show at Preston Railway Station. • The traditional blue binding which features the Guild ‘G’ branding, was completed by bookbinder Peter Doyle.
